  • Using The Experience Sampling Method in Gerontological Social Work
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gerontological Social Work. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 30:3/4, s. 183-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines some advantages and drawbacks of using Experience Sampling Method(ESM)for the study of gerontological social work and other related fields of social and health services. ESM typically requires participants to respond to signals from electronic pagers at randomly determined intervals. In response to these, participants are expected to fill out a short self-report about their activities, as well as of their thoughts and feelings of these activities. ESM is, compared to conventional methods of obserevation (when people know that they are being studied and may behave differently from normal), a rather unobtrosive method, and ESM-data does not, unlike conventional survey-data, rely on retrospective information.

  • Direct and Indirect Support for Carers : patterns of Support for Informal Caregivers to Elderly People in Sweden
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 38:4, s. 67-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines what support services are offered to informal caregivers and whether the support is aimed directly or indirectly at the caters. Data were collected by means of two mail questionnaires in a Swedish county. The first questionnaire was aimed at each municipality in the region. The second questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 284 voluntary organizations in the region. Only the municipalities proved to have relief services, day care centers and two forms of payment for carers. The voluntary organizations' support for carers was focused on support groups and training as well as services for elderly care recipients. The results indicated that the support services for carers were both direct and indirect and that the municipalities and the voluntary organizations largely offer different kinds of support.

  • A long life with a particular signature : life course and ageing for people with disabilities
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - : Routledge. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 55:2, s. 95-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What does it mean to live a long life and grow old with disabilities? Or to be an aging parent and still be a caregiver to a disabled adult child? These are questions discussed in this article, the aim of which is to show how a life course perspective adds insight to the lived experience of disability and ageing of adults with disabilities. It is argued that the time concept is fundamental to the understanding of the lives of disabled people. Results are presented which challenge established knowledge regarding disability policies, autonomy, body, biographical disruption and prerequisites of active aging.

  • Is it racism? Skepticism and resistance towards ethnic minority care workers among older care recipients
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 49:4, s. 79-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study investigates the occurrence and character of skepticism and resistance towards ethnic minority care workers among older care recipients in a municipality in Sweden. Twelve representatives of caregiver organizations were interviewed about their experience of this phenomenon. Three additional interviews were conducted with ethnic minority care workers. Representatives described the problem as rare and mostly occurring as language difficulties or as a temporary problem characterized as a fear of the unknown among some care recipients. They tended to apply a pragmatic or pathologizing approach when talking about causes of and solutions to the problem. These approaches enabled care providers to comply with "potential racism" without challenging an official ideology of anti-racism. In contrast, staff of foreign descent described the problem as more frequent and severe, particularly for short-term employees who experience many first-time encounters with care recipients. © by The Haworth Press, Inc. • Caring while living apart
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 49:4, s. 3-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, researchers have paid increasing attention to the issue of care in the new types of family and partner relationships. The aim of this study is to examine expectations and attitudes concerning care among elderly people in LAT (Living Apart Together)- relationships in Sweden, that is, people who have a long-term intimate relationship, but who do not share a common home. Questionnaires were completed by 116 elderly people in LAT-relationships. Partners are ranked as the main providers of care, especially by men, but there is considerable variation in the answers. This seems to be principally related to the degree of flexibility in this type of relationship. Some individuals see a LAT-relationship as a marriage-like relationship, while others see it primarily as a type of relationship that guarantees them the possibility of maintaining their own independent way of life.

  • Older Adults' Experiences of How Participating in a Senior Summer Camp Has Affected Their Lives : A Phenomenographic Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - Philadelphia, PA, United States : Routledge. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 66:3, s. 321-338
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several municipalities in Sweden organize senior summer camps where older adults can meet and where loneliness and social isolation can be mitigated. Few studies, however, examine how the older adults themselves describe the experience in retrospect and how it might have influenced their daily lives after the stay. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how older adults who participated in a senior summer camp experience the impact the stay has had on their lives. The study has a descriptive qualitative design that uses a phenomenographic approach to explore the variations in the older adults' conceptions of how their participation at the senior summer camp may have affected them. Nineteen older adults aged between 66 and 94 years were interviewed. Three descriptive categories emerge: "Mitigating loneliness," 'Developing as a person' and 'Gaining inspiration.' The study shows that the older adults experience that the stay at the summer camp has had lasting effects on their quality of life. The sense of community at the camp helped them break the experience of loneliness, they improved their self-confidence and gained a positive attitude to life, that it is worth living and that there is much left to experience, regardless of their age.

  • “You Never Get Used to Loneliness” : Older Adults’ Experiences of Loneliness When Applying for Going on a Senior Summer Camp
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gerontological Social Work. - : Routledge. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 62:8, s. 892-911
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was explore why the informants were feeling lonely and considered themselves to be in need of attending a senior summer camp, and how the informants were experiencing loneliness before they went to the senior summer camp. Interviews was made with nineteen older adult people (15 women and 4 men). A phenomenological inspired approach was used for the analysis of the interviews. Eight themes resulted: Hard to make new friends, Other circumstances making it hard to be social, Feel very lonely even if they lead rich social lives, Loss of loved ones, Do not want to do things alone, Friends make a difference, Do not feel lonely but need a change and Loneliness occurs at certain times. Through this analysis, we have gain insights to better understand loneliness as a multifaceted phenomenon that is asso-ciated with both personal circumstances and social situations. Many of the informants experienced being very lonely, even if they lead rich social lives. The experience of loneliness was connected to not having anyone they can turn to in confidence or to share experiences with and the need to belong to something or the need of a change in everyday life.

  • Supervision as Pedagogy and Support in the Swedish Eldercare : A Developmental Project
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gerontological Social Work. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 47:3-4, s. 83-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number of elderly people is gradually increasing, and with it the number of persons receiving some kind of care in their everyday lives. However, researchers and the mass media recurrently report great difficulties for many caregivers in their work situations. This article considers process-oriented supervision as a pedagogic method for training and support of nurse aids and managers in Swedish eldercare. With reference to a developmental project, the author discusses the clash between the supervisor's process-oriented manner and the staffs' problem-oriented attitudes. This shows that supervision in this form may not necessarily be an effective way of reforming care. Instead the caregivers point out organisational changes and better leadership as more adequate methods.

  • The Health of Older Family Caregivers - A 6-Year Follow-up
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Gerontological Social Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1540-4048 .- 0163-4372. ; 64:2, s. 190-207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is unclear whether caregiving has an impact on the physical, mental and functional health of older caregivers. This study aimed to describe physical, mental and functional health in relation to family caregiving in old age (60+) over a six-year period. The study comprised 2,294 randomly selected individuals (60-96 years) from the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care, who answered the question on whether they were caregivers and who were followed up six years later. The prevalence of family caregivers was 13.1% and the incidence was 12.4%. Four tracks (T) were identified; T1) Family caregiver both at baseline and follow-up (n = 74), T2) Family caregiver at baseline but not at follow-up (n = 226), T3) non-caregiver at baseline but family caregiver at follow-up (n = 218), T4) non-caregiver both at baseline and follow-up (1,776). Only non-caregivers (T4) reported a decline in mental health, p < .036. Worries about health increased significantly in T2 and T4. The prevalence of caregivers was 13.1% with a high turnover. There are differences between family caregivers and non-caregivers in deterioration in physical and mental health as well as physical function over a six-year period.

  • “They just don’t have a clue” : Transgender aging and implications for social work
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - : Routledge. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 57:2-4, s. 386-406
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores transgender aging, drawing from life story interviews with transgender adults aged 62–78. The analysis focuses on 3 themes: intersections of age and gender during the life course, lack of knowledge of transgender issues, and how previous experiences of accessing care and social services matter in later life. It illustrates how older transgendered adults carry physical and mental scars from previously encountered transphobia, which affect various aspects of later life. Implications for social work are discussed and client-centered care, with a biographical approach, is suggested to better meet the needs of transgendered older adults.

  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 57:6-7, s. 531-555
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To help family caregivers (FCs), social workers need to understand the complexity of FC's experiences and challenges. For this systematic review, several relevant, multidisciplinary electronic databases were searched. Of 1,643 titles identified, 108 articles met the inclusion criteria and are included in this review. Various experiences, symptoms, and burden related to caregiving responsibilities are described and discussed. The understanding evolving from this study about the FC's own health risk, caregiver burden, and experiences over time can enhance a social worker's awareness of an FC's challenging situation and the potential impact this has on the FC's ability to provide care to the patient.

  • Social Work Response to Elder Abuse in Uganda : Voices from Practitioners
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - : Routledge. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 65:4, s. 361-381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social workers across the globe are at the forefront of tackling elder abuse, as they are committed to social justice, human rights, and respect for human diversity. However, research on social workers' response to elder abuse in Sub-Saharan Africa remains scarce. This qualitative study assessed how social workers in Uganda have responded to elder abuse. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 21 social workers. The findings suggest that social work in Uganda has not asserted itself in the fight against elder abuse. The few social work interventions aimed at reducing the risk of elder abuse are mostly anti-poverty undertakings. Social workers mainly discussed the drivers of elder abuse, correlating them with their interventions, and challenges such as the absence of a specific law for older people, ignorance of older people's rights, and the underreporting of elder abuse. This study found that advocacy is needed for specific laws that protect the rights of older people, along with public awareness campaigns and the establishment of a research center for aging and later life.

  • Care managers' expected and experienced hindrances and preconditions when eHomecare is implemented: A Qualitative Focus Group Study.
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, information and communication technology has been introduced into home care services for older people, i.e., eHomecare. In this study, we explore social workers’ (care managers, [CM]) expected orexperienced hindrances and preconditions affecting their role and missionin eHomecare implementation. Four focus group interviews were conducted with participants from four municipalities in central Sweden during thespring of 2015. One focus group consisted of CMs with experiences of eHomecare and the other three groups of CMs without eHomecare experience. The study found that several hindrances may occur when eHomecare is implemented as part of home care, which in turn affect CMs´mission. CMs need a society that is well-informed in general aboute Homecare and requires relevant stakeholders to participate in the implementation process. CMs need an organization that is clear about their mission and a work situation that gives them the right circumstances for professionally managing eHomecare. It is also understood that older people must be given the right circumstances to adopt the technology, thus facilitating the CMs’ mission. Knowledge and time are assumed to be preconditions for CMs when managing eHomecare.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - : Routledge. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 58:6, s. 613-636
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In assessment meetings concerning care services for people with dementia, Swedish case managers face a dilemma. On the one hand, according to the law, the right to self-determination of every adult citizen must be respected, but on the other hand cognitive disabilities make it difficult to fulfill obligations of being a full-fledged citizen. In this article, we examine 15 assessment meetings to identify discursive strategies used by case managers to handle this dilemma. We also examine how these affect the participation of persons with dementia, and indicate implications of our study for social work practice and research.
