  • Domesticating pathogenies, evaluating change : The Eurozone crisis as a ‘hot moment’ in Greek television fiction
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - London : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 40:7, s. 957-972
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates how the Eurozone crisis is thematically negotiated in a popular Greek television comedy. Inspired by the increasing interest in the ideological role of news media during the Eurozone crisis of the late 2000s, it turns the spotlight on the sphere of entertainment in an attempt to address the importance of fictional mediations and meaning-making processes. To that end, it proposes an understanding of television fiction as an accommodator and shaper of ‘hot moments’, instigating processes of self-assessment and evaluation of change. More specifically, the study examines the ways in which the family comedy Piso sto Spiti (MEGA Channel, 2011–2013) provides culturally based understandings of the Eurozone crisis by depicting it as associated with inherent flaws of the modern Greek and by assessing the possibility of change through a juxtaposition with national ‘others’. At the same time, it identifies ways that ideology leaks from television fiction in its interaction with other media discourses simultaneously circulating within a society.

  • Archives of/as resistance : On the justice potential of eyewitness image records documenting the Syrian conflict
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 46:4, s. 671-687
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What are the new possibilities of enacting justice through the vast archives of digital eyewitness images and self-representations produced since 2011 by the grassroots Syrian opposition movement amidst both a nascent revolution and a war entailing gross human rights violations? Based on in-depth interviews with 15 anti-regime Syrian video activists, my article considers how the image makers themselves narrate the role and meaning of these archival records in efforts to reckon with Syria's tormented past and build a more just future. I thus seek to recognize the ongoing agency of the Syrian media activists who struggled, by centering them and their wishes in the current debate about the role that this new type of activist-fueled human rights records can play in helping to build roads to justice and healing in Syria.

  • Disinformation and strategic frames : Introducing the concept of a strategic epistemology towards media
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Efforts to raise awareness about foreign disinformation might accidentally increase distrust towards legitimate media. We argue that state discourse on disinformation is comparable to strategic framing in journalists’ coverage of political events, and that it might imbue audiences with cynicism. Furthermore, in contrast to an experimental paradigm that depicts disinformation audiences as passive, we suggest that news consumers actively appropriate and produce content themselves. Conceptualising media content as ‘strategic’ rather than sincere might influence audiences to share and produce media content strategically. This Machiavellian tendency leads to similar effects on bias as motivated reasoning. Most accounts of motivated reasoning assume that limits of psychological processing are the reasons for biased judgements of what is true and fake, however, we argue that biases can also be due to culturally acquired second-order beliefs about knowledge. To explain this, we build on ideas about ‘folk epistemology’ and propose the term ‘strategic epistemology towards media’. Resistance-building efforts against disinformation risk promoting such a strategic epistemology towards media and this can have harmful effects on democratic dialogue. To avoid this, educational interventions should be premised on social epistemology rather than experimental psychology.

  • Influencers as ideological intermediaries : promotional politics and authenticity labour in influencer collaborations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 45:3, s. 528-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Though politics and promotion have never been completely separate, the convergence between the two spheres is increasingly prominent in today's digital culture. To broaden our understanding of such promotional politics in social media, this paper examines commercial collaborations between four Swedish influencers and two private companies that offer services enabled by specific neoliberal reforms during recent decades, and how they strive to present these services in a way that attracts an affluent but socially conscious middle-class. It argues that the political potential of influencers might not always be as spokespersons for a cause or party, but rather as ‘ideological intermediaries’ who promote a lifestyle to be inspired by, and aspire to. The analysis identifies the discourses that influencers draw on to achieve the promotional and ideological outcomes of commercial collaborations, as well as the authenticity labour that they perform in the texts. Further, the paper analyses how notions of authenticity also impact audiences' interpretation and politicization of the collaborations, in the comment sections to the sponsored blogposts

  • Studying the Nordic Resistance Movement : three urgent questions for researchers of contemporary neo-Nazis and their media practices
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 41:6, s. 878-888
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This commentary provides critical reflections on a number of challenges related to research methodology and ethics when studying organized racism in online environments. Based on ongoing fieldwork of the Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR) in Sweden, I ask three critical questions about researching the neo-Nazi organization and organized racism more generally: (1) How do we produce valid knowledge of these ‘closed’ groups in their ‘open’ online spaces? What are the limitations of our research on hidden social life when we only have access to what they want us to know? (2) Why and for whom are we producing research on these groups? Or, put another way, what ethical considerations and problems related to intent and research agendas arise in studies of neo-Nazism and other forms of organized racism? (3) What is the emotional labour involved in studying these groups for the researcher and how might it be used in a productive manner?

  • Faraway, so close! : Proximity and distance in ethnography online
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 36:6, s. 862-877
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues for a revised importance of distance, besides the much emphasized closeness, in the debate on and use of ethnographic methods in online environments. When returning to the founding fathers of ethnographic methods, distance is often put forward as a core aspect of ethnographic methods, something widely forgotten, or even rejected, in the current debate in the field. Space has been restructured by digital media technologies, and the spatial and temporal proximity of digital  media cultures present new challenges for research methodologies. Based on the author’s own experiences of ethnographic fieldwork in digital cultures, and with Henri Lefebvre’s theory of everyday life as a rhythm as vantage point, it is here argued that  distance, dialectically interlinked with closeness and proximity, should be given further attention in current research and debate on ethnographic methods used online.

  • Inside, outside, and beyond media logic : journalistic creativity in climate reporting
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 33:3, s. 449-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to accomplish more multi-dimensional analyses of media logic one needs to study how journalists grapple with news issues in their expanding development, such as the revolutionary development of the climate issue in the news. The present analysis is based on interviews with 14 Swedish environmental journalists from various news media, who have been part of editorial concentrations on climate news. The results consist of three ways of conceptualizing the climate issue among the journalists: as inside, outside, and beyond media logic. These conceptualizations give rise to three conflicting types of journalistic creativity, more precisely, the ability to effectively insert the climate issue ‘into’ media logic; the ability to go as far ‘outside’ media logic as possible while remaining credible by arraying the climate issue in ‘scientific language’; and finally, the ability to think beyond the media-logic ‘box’ and do something about it (to change journalism).

  • Audience-metric continuity? Approaching the meaning of measurement in the digital everyday
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 42:7-8, s. 1193-1209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues for an expansion of existing studies on the meaning of metrics in digital environments by evaluating a methodology tested in a pilot study to analyse audience responses to metrics of social media profiles. The pilot study used the software tool Facebook Demetricator by artist Ben Grosser in combination with follow-up interviews. In line with Grosser’s intentions, the software indeed provoked reflection among the users. In this article, we reflect on three kinds of disorientations that users expressed, linked to temporality, sociality and value. Relating these to the history of audience measurement in mass media, we argue that there is merit in using this methodology for further analysis of continuities in audience responses to metrics, in order to better understand the ways in which metrics work to create the ‘audience commodity’.

    • Should regional context overshadow theoretical contributions of a doctoral dissertation or an international journal article? In this essay, we argue that expendable region-centricism diminishes the contributions of Majority World Countries to the media and communication discipline. We propose that 'de-contextualized' studies - which accentuate the theoretical, conceptual, or methodological import of research - could complement current efforts to decentre knowledge.

  • Policy failure or moral scandal? Political accountability, journalism and new public management
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 35:8, s. 960-976
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Political accountability is fundamental in a democratic society. Societal changes such as the marketization of the public sector have, however, made accountability issues complex and negotiable. The question of who is to be held to account for policy failures is increasingly a subject of struggle within the media. The aim of this article is to examine how journalism does “accountability work” in a political setting marked by new public management. The empirical study focuses on an example of intensive news coverage of the mistreatment of elderly people in private health care, in Sweden, 2011. A corpus of 156 news items is analyzed. The analysis focuses on the use of accountability interviews, and how journalism constructs boundaries of political accountability by framing social problems. In general, the study shows that the political accountability work carried out was weak and restricted, the problems were constructed as a moral scandal instead of a policy failure.

  • Technoscientific promotion and biofuel policy : How the press and search engines stage the biofuel controversy
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 35:4, s. 454-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What are the conditions for the public understanding of biofuels and how do the media shape these conditions under the influence of a new production of knowledge? This article investigates how the biofuel controversy plays out in the Swedish press and Google search engine results and analyses winners and losers in the tight attention economy of contemporary media. It describes different visibility strategies biofuel stakeholders employ in both media arenas, and identifies a form of technoscientific promotion that hybrid actors use to succeed in the day-to-day struggle for media attention. To conclude, it raises broader societal questions of the contemporary blurring of knowledge boundaries and the emergence of new information hierarchies and their biases. By understanding how contemporary media shape controversies, we can address the democratic potential of both mass media and science.

  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - London : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 34:4, s. 472-487
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main purpose of this article is to draw attention to a long-standing history of exhibiting disasters to distant audiences. In particular, the article explores the transregional imaginaries and cross-temporal connections that emerge from the history of what may be labelled the disaster display or disaster show. This refers to a particular genre of multimedia re-enactments of extreme events that developed in the context of temporary exhibitions and popular amusements in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Disaster displays typically involved visual representations, sound effects, fireworks, lectures and theatrical performances, and invited their audiences to experience a diversity of extreme events, for example distant wars, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, fire fighting and floods. In offering a blend of special effects and the thrills of authenticity, disaster shows copied and competed with, and sometimes incorporated, some of the traits of a variety of attractions in turn-of-the-century popular visual culture, such as serialized wax displays, moving panoramas and early film. The article especially investigates some of these intermedialities but it also discusses how the displays engaged and positioned the audience.

  • Three tasks for mediatization research : contributions to an open agenda
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 38:7, s. 1090-1108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on the interdisciplinary experience of a Swedish research committee, this article discusses critical conceptual issues raised by the current debate on mediatization - a concept that holds great potential to constitute a space for synthesized understandings of media-related social transformations. In contrast to other, more metaphorical constructions, mediatization can be studied empirically in systematic ways through various sub-processes that together provide a complex picture of how culture and everyday life evolve in times of media saturation. The first part of this article argues that mediatization researchers have sometimes formulated too grand claims as to mediatization's status as a unitary approach, a meta-theory or a paradigm. Such claims have led to problematic confusions around the concept and should be abandoned in favour of a more open agenda. In line with such a call for openness, the second part of the article introduces historicity, specificity and measurability as three transdisciplinary and transparadigmatic tasks for the contemporary mediatization research agenda.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 38:3, s. 365-380
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyses the meaning-making discourse on Twitter in the 6 days following the 2011 Norway attacks. The attacks in Oslo and on the island of Utøya resulted in 77 deaths, of which 69 were youths on Utøya, where a summer camp arranged by the Norwegian Social Democratic youth organisation Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF) was being held. The main discursive themes in the material were found to be focused on the Norwegian nation, expressions of solidarity, the meaning and outcomes of the attacks, as well as details of the attacks themselves. These themes were of changing importance over the 6 days following the attacks, as discussions concerning the Norwegian nation and the attacks themselves dropped rapidly in favour of negotiating the explanations behind the attacks. Twitter was shown to be useful for providing backchannel discourse negotiations that were separate from the mass media discourse concerning the attacks.

  • Metaphors of free labor : A typology of unpaid work in the media sector
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 38:7, s. 963-978
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last decade, free labor has emerged as a key analytical tool for understanding new or semi-new forms of labor in the contemporary digital economy. This article critiques and develops this concept, with specific reference to work in the media industries, by presenting a historically grounded typology of free labor that also highlights some of the analytical problems with the current use of the concept. Our typology presents seven metaphors of free labor based on historical instances of roles people have taken on when performing unpaid labor: those of The Slave, The Carer, The Apprentice, The Prospector, The Hobbyist, The Volunteer, and The Patsy. A key conclusion is that free labor is performed by different actors at either end of increasingly complex and temporally stretched out value chains. This necessitates a more fine-grained and historicized use of the concept of free labor.

  • The criminal trial as a live event: Exploring how and why live blogs change the professional practices of judges, defence lawyers and prosecutors
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Media, Culture and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 1460-3675 .- 0163-4437. ; 43:8, s. 1480-1496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Live blogging from legal trials has become one of the most accessible ways in which the public can gain direct insight into legal proceedings, particularly in countries where television cameras are denied entry into the courtroom. Whilst live blogging constitutes an important way of ensuring the transparency and openness of legal processes and documents – a principle known as open justice and a key component of many democratic societies – the risks stemming from opening up the courts not only to more immediate and detailed scrutiny, but also to a larger, virtual audience are lesser known. A deeper understanding of how a legal trial’s transformation into a live event due to live blogs has impacted on the legal sphere is therefore needed. The aims of this article are thus twofold: to show how live blogs are changing legal professionals’ work practices and to discuss what it is about live blogs that leads to these changes in professional practices. The analysis draws on qualitative interviews with legal professionals in Sweden and Denmark and finds that live blogs increase reflection in professional performances stemming from an awareness of performing to a virtual audience. Surveillance thus leads to performance adjustment. Live blogs also lead to changes in professionals practices and transform the audience/participant boundary into a fluid one most notably regarding the Danish respondents in comparison to those in Sweden. The article also suggests a hierarchy of liveness with live blogs considered to be less intrusive than televised trials.

  • Bridging gaps : ten crosscurrents in media studies
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - London : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 30:1, s. 895-905
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Once upon a time, it was popular to declare war between opposing camps in media studies. The struggle between “critical theory” and “mass communications” or later between “cultural studies” and “political economy” in UK and US media research was one such example. In other parts of the world, those polarities were much less dominant, and today many old gaps seem to have been bridged. Several old and new issues are still contested and need to be worked through, but I do not think that this should be done in terms of gaps and divides. When a field is divided by deep clefts, a productive strategy is often to seek third positions from where to mediate the two and see how they offer models of understanding that may enrich and supplement each other, if dialectically reinterpreted from a less reductive standpoint. Today, even that may be an outdated mode of reasoning, since one may argue that there is not any longer two firm and distinct camps in media studies, but rather a dynamically interweaving set of currents that sometimes reinforce, sometimes contradict each other.I will here outline five pair of trends that have been particularly influential and inspiring during the last decades, and that are particularly relevant to the future directions of media research. None of them is a real turn, implying any total change in all of media studies. Instead, they form double streams that may run in parallel, feed into each other, or become crosscurrents whose intersections create tensions and contradictions. Each pair is in some sense paradoxical and contradictory, pointing out key ambivalences and contradictions in the present situation. This is therefore an alternative to thinking in terms of gaps or borders. As for gaps, I do not believe there is anymore one dominant dichotomy that divides the field. It is more relevant to talk of borders and not least of hybrid borderlands, but these pairs are too complexly intertwined to even make such a term useful. Each current has been contested and is deeply ambiguous, and any precise dating is difficult since they have developed in steps that differ between countries.[i]My point here is threefold. A first goal is to lift up ten trends that, though contestable, all deserve to be taken seriously as impulses to renew and revitalize media studies. Secondly, I will argue that great surplus insights for media studies are to be won by reading them in relation to each other, acknowledging their intersections instead of isolating them from each other. While each current may be familiar, they are rarely sufficiently juxtaposed, though there are important interrelations between these media studies discourses. Taken together, it becomes clear how much they mutually constitute each other and offer a richer understanding of the challenges that lie ahead, by posing challenging questions concerning the scope and definition of media and media studies. Third, this dialogic exercise indicates that the usual divides are increasingly less relevant in the new media landscape and intellectual scene, both being characterized by fluidity and hybridization.[i] These currents were first outlined in a brief presentation at the interdisciplinary workshop on ‘Bridging Methodology Gaps, Building Institutional Bridges’, organized by the European Science Foundation (ESF) at the University of London, UK, 10-12 December 2007.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Media, Culture & Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 44:3, s. 532-548
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent discussion on mediatisation prompts questions about how it arises and how social spheres are marked by it. In this article, we use business as an example of a social sphere to show that the production of normativity by and through the media is a central aspect of mediatisation. The empirical case of the article is the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Six specific techniques were used by the media to construct the case as an instance of corporate misbehaviour that met public recognition. The techniques are instrumental in forming the predicament of a modern mediatised business sphere, it is argued.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relations between the media and their corporate sources have become increasingly routinized and organized. In contrast to traditional perspectives on news making this article introduces an embeddedness perspective on business journalism and reports on the findings from a study of the way the major Swedish corporations and financial analysts contribute to and participate in the production of business news. Through a qualitative analysis of two cases we show that such production is organized and carried out in a stream of continuous and well-coordinated activities and structured interaction settings – that is, in a system of recursive mediation. Our analysis further illustrates how this system is maintained through the technological, relational and situational embeddedness of the activities and settings. Through our studies we show how news production has developed outside the journalistic domain. One implication of our findings is that the possibility of individual actors influencing the content of the news is likely to be limited. Instead, it is the actors’ ability to join the organizational and technological settings in which news material is generated that gives them the opportunity to actively participate in news production.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the literature on changes in political journalism, it is often claimed that journalists and media pundits have become more prominent in the media's political news coverage. At the same time, politicians allegedly receive less attention and are more often depicted either positively or negatively instead of neutrally. It has also been claimed that those commenting on politicians' actions in the news are predominantly conservative. Based on data from a content analysis of thousands of news stories from all five Danish national elections since 1994, this study investigates whether the assumed changes have indeed taken place. Among other things, the results show that journalists and media pundits today appear more often on camera and that media pundits more often than not are right-rather than left-wing. However, these and other trends are not unidirectional, suggesting more complex patterns than is often assumed.

    • What does media welfare mean from a normative perspective? The notion of media welfare and “the media welfare state” has mainly been used descriptively, to depict the particular way in which the media are organized in the Nordic welfare states. In this article, we explore media welfare from a normative perspective. Our intention is to open up a discussion about the normative and political implications of the notion of media welfare and to bring the concept into the contemporary discussion on normative perspectives regarding the media.

    • Critical Internet and media scholarship has primarily focused on contributing to theoretical debates within the field of media and communications but few empirical studies have applied this theoretical approach. This article uses data on older active ICT users’ understandings of digitisation. It draws inspiration from Boltanski’s pragmatist sociology of critique and the notion that people’s own take on their situation are fruitful sources of information in the quest for emancipation. It employs the notions of ideology, power and inclusion – which are central to critical scholarship – to make sense of older active ICT users’ understandings of digitisation. In doing so, it explores the fruitfulness of the critical lens for studies of ICT users while bringing attention to older active ICT users’ critical capacities.

We, further, suggest that datafied welfare can be fruitfully studied with the capabilities approach to better understand how ideas and values of data welfare intersect with and may allow for the ‘good’ life and human flourishing. The main aim is to highlight the deep-seated changes of the welfare state that emerge with the delegation of care and control tasks to algorithmic systems and the automation based on datafication practices. Welfare provision is undergoing major shifts that imply fundamentally rethinking the role of technology that supports and enhances welfare with the help of data.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Protest movements have successfully adopted media technologies to promote their causes and mobilize large numbers of supporters. Especially social media that are considered as low-cost and time-saving alternatives have played particularly important roles in recent mobilizations. There is, however, a growing concern about the contradictions between long-term organizing for progressive, social change, on one hand, and the media technologies employed, on the other. Hartmut Rosa has argued that the current culture of accelerated capitalism is characterized by a growing desynchronization between political practices (slow politics) and the economic system (fast capitalism). This article traces the increasing social acceleration related to (media) technologies employed by protest activists and asks whether there is an increasing desynchronization with their political practices discernible. Furthermore, the article investigates strategies of resistance to overcome the growing gap between ‘machine time’ and political time. Empirically, the article builds on archival material and in-depth interviews documenting the media practices of the unemployed workers’ movement (1930s), the tenants’ movement (1970s) and the Occupy Wall Street Movement (2011/2012) and argues for the need to re-politicize media infrastructures as means of communication in order to tackle democratic problems that emerge from the divergent temporalities.

  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 42:7-8, s. 1277-1292
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Incarcerated individuals have long contributed to crucial societal infrastructures. Frombeing leased work force building the railway in the United States to constructing canalsystems in Sweden, prisoners’ labor has been widespread as an important part ofvalue production. Part of the labor conducted by incarcerated people is related tothe production, repair, and maintenance of media devices and media infrastructuresconstituting what we call prison media work. In this article, we trace the changinglogics of prison media work historically since the inception of the modern prison at theturn of the 20th century. Based on archival material, interviews, and field observations,we outline a shift from physical manual labor toward the work of being tracked thatis constitutive of surveillance capitalism in- and outside of the prison. We argue thatprison media work holds an ambiguous position combining elements of exploitationand rehabilitation, but most importantly it is a dystopian magnifying glass of media workunder surveillance capitalism.

  • Alt-right and authoritarian memetic alliances: global mediations of hate within the rising Farsi manosphere on Iranian social media
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 45:3, s. 487-510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the rising Farsi ‘manosphere’ of Iran and the case of online misogynistic, anti-feminist and anti-queer mobilisations across social media platforms and messaging applications. It focuses on memes and memetic figures that are circulated on Iranian social media and proposes the term ‘memetic alliances’ to convey complicated and unforeseen mutations of today’s internet meme culture and online hate culture. Moreover, it unpacks the increasing convergences of seemingly conflicting online and political contexts. Drawing on digital ethnographic fieldwork on selected platforms as well as visual and conceptual analyses of memes, the article theorises that online figurations of hate have memeto-(micro)political qualities that allow for their propagation across numerous contexts. Furthermore, the case of Iran’s emergent Farsi manosphere is arguably not a totalitarian exception unique to the Middle East but is reconfiguring and standing in alliance with the global rise of the right and its online culture wars.

  • How gaming became sexist : a study of UK gaming magazines 1981-1995
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 39:4, s. 453-468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Computer gaming was not born sexist but was codified as an exclusively male practice as it peeled itself away from the rest of the burgeoning computer culture in the mid-1980s. This article traces the development of gaming's gender bias through a discourse analysis of gaming magazines published in the United Kingdom between 1981 and 1995. In their early years (1981-1985), these publications present a milieu that was reflective on gender issues and concerned to include female participants. However, from 1987, the rhetorical framing of computer games, gaming and gamer performance was increasingly gender-exclusive and focused on the re-enforcement of stereotypically masculine values, albeit that much of this discourse had a humorous and ironic inflection. The article presents this as the gender-biased articulation of gaming discourse. Instead of viewing the gendering of computer games as something they inherited from previous kinds of games and activities, the article argues that the political economy of the gaming industry in the second half of the 1980s created specific conditions under which games and gaming were coded as exclusively masculine.

  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - London, United Kingdom : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 32:3, s. 429-450
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Journalists engaged in dialogues between themselves on air have become a common feature on the news. The main purpose of this study is to identify the various ways that these ‘intraprofessional dialogues’ are used and performed on the news with a specific focus on examples from television. Besides identifying the different uses of intraprofessional dialogues, an extend ed example of a studio talk between a presenter and a political correspondent serves to problematise the distinction between the discourse of news presentation and report on the one hand, and the discourse in these kinds of intraprofessional talks on the other hand, made by Montgomery (2007, 2008). The qualitative data is drawn from a corpus of codings of news and current affairs programming from Great Britain and Sweden totalling approximately 150 hours including radio and television, commercial and public service channels. The quantitative findings that accompany the qualitative analysis show that journalists-as interviewees in news and current affairs broadcasts are even more common than politicians-as-interviewees. This raises interesting questions about the execution of political accountability in contemporary news journalism.

  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 35:5, s. 620-639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New technologies offer new interactional possibilities for news journalism, but they also pose a challenge to broadcasters who are accustomed to the practices of ‘old’ television news. The web is one such arena where broadcasters are in the process of mastering a sense of sociability (Scannell 1996, 2010) and ‘communicative ease’ (cf. Hutchby, 2006) in relation to audiences. They struggle to find ways to engage audiences in the roles of both viewers and users in line with the technological affordances of the web. Rather little attention has yet been paid to how the general sociability of broadcasting is influenced by the development of digital media. This study presents a case of how broadcasters orient to their audience(s) in a so-called live news co-production on the web. The main point is to highlight both possibilities and dilemmas in the management of audience-oriented activities on a new technological platform with its different conditions for production and reception. We argue that broadcasters interested in producing web news both need to adhere to the professional principles and standards of ordinary broadcasting, and at the same time show that they are competent enough to also produce unpolished, layman-like material normally associated with unprofessionality.

  • The design and scripting of 'unscripted' talk : liveness versus control in a TV broadcast interview
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - London : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 31:2, s. 271-288
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By combining ethnographic methods with textual analysis, this article sets out to answer the question how a scripted event on live television is infused with a sense of ‘liveness’ in order to balance the requirements of control and spontaneity in a broadcast interview. The management of this seemingly paradoxical desire is, in this analysis, linked to the ways in which professionals work at maintaining the identity of public service while competing on a commercial media market. In relation to this general inquiry, the script’s status in the production of a broadcast interview will also be analyzed, an area which is somewhat of a blind spot in media research. In doing so, the conventional division between scripted and unscripted broadcast talk (Scannell 2003) is called into question.

  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - London, United Kingdom : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 38:7, s. 1015-1033
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides an updated analysis relating to John B. Thompson’s argument about political visibility and fragility. It does so in light of recent years’ development of communication technologies and the proliferation of nonbroadcasting media organizations producing TV. Instances of a new mediated encounter for politicians is analyzed in detail – the live web interview – produced and streamed by two Swedish tabloids during election campaigning 2014. It is argued that the live web interview is not yet a recognizable ‘communicative activity type’ with an obvious set of norms, rules, and routines. This fact makes politicians more intensely exposed to moments of mediated fragility which may be difficult to control. The most crucial condition that changes how politicians are able to manage their visibility is the constantly rolling ‘non-exclusive’ live camera which does not give the politician any room for error. The tabloids do not seem to mind ‘things going a bit wrong’ while airing; rather, interactional flaws are argued to be part and parcel of the overall web TV performance.

  • Reawakenings to the improbable : Offerings of the limit situation for media theory in a disorderly world
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The global pandemic threw the world in all its asymmetries and diversities into a limit situation without known coordinates. This article suggests that in its aftermath there is actually a call and an opportunity for more than rethinking existing keywords in the field. It argues that the crisis was “improbable” in the meaning of the word offered by Amitav Ghosh who traces a common sense forged by probabilistic science, that expelled the unthinkable from the modern imaginary. Tracking down this regime of certainty, the essay offers a discussion on the place or displacement of the disorderly, the uncertain, and the disruptive in media theory. It submits that reawakening to the improbable, in light of Karl Jaspers’ philosophical anthropology of the limit situation, offers a fruitful conceptual avenue ahead. Apart from introducing the concept of the (digital) limit situation, the article offers a conversation between existential media studies, critical disability studies, feminist STS, and the environmental humanities, by also inviting an extended family of unruly concepts, including dismediation and deferral. It concludes that limit situations can be transformative also for media theory, if we dare to seize them, by means of existential modes of transversal listening to ghostly pasts never fulfilled.

  • Distinctions in the media welfare state : audience fragmentation in post-egalitarian Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 40:5, s. 639-655
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture in order to shed new light on the ongoing fragmentation of media audiences and users. We use a multiple correspondence analysis on national survey data (n = 1604) collected in Sweden in 2015–2016 to (1) create a statistical representation of the contemporary Swedish class structure and proceed to (2) analyze the distribution of a broad range of media practices and media preferences in that space. Results show that social groups reproduce their social status by monopolizing distinct media repertoires. We are able to show that class matters for how people orient themselves in an increasingly high-choice media environment – even in a so-called media welfare state. Following the results of our media-sociological approach, we introduce the concept of audience islands which promotes a non-media-centric understanding of the fragmentation of society and media audiences.

  • Media practice and class-making : The anticipation of stigma and the cultural middle-class habitus
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 46:1, s. 21-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationship between media practices and social inequality has been studied within a range of sub-disciplines in media and communication studies and cultural sociology. In various, more or less direct, ways these studies point to the fact that habitus – the socially formed class specific relations to the social world – generates certain tastes, lifestyles, practices and preferences. When social groups form relatively distinct media practices, and distance themselves from the practices of other groups, they reproduce their social position, and 'make' their class. By analysing in-depth interviews with members of an emerging cultural middle-class, this study shows how class-making also manifests in the ways in which people expect that others would 'look down' on their media practices. By anticipating stigma from imagined others, the cultural middle-class stays in line with class-specific lifestyles and media practices, thus cementing their distinct character in the social space.

  • The establishing of subject positions in Swedish news media discourses during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the global media since 2020. To a large extent, it isvia the news media that the public has learned about the risks, levels of danger, governmentalregulations and mandatory actions. This article highlights the subject positions constructedby the Swedish news media from January 2020 to February 2021 in reports about thepandemic. The result shows that citizens can be active-passive or solitary solidarity, thesepositions appeal to individual accountability, thus potentially shaping and fostering citizensin line with the Swedish government’s wider response to the pandemic. The news media’simages are of self-regulated citizens who govern and discipline themselves and othersaccording to the current discourses, all of which simultaneously evoke fear, togethernessand hope. The ideological dilemmas for citizens are whether to be active-passive or, ifnecessary, switch to the solitary solidarity subject position.

  • Domestication outside of the domestic : shaping technology and child in an educational moral economy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 43:3, s. 480-496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the usability of domestication theory in an educational setting integrating a wide variety of information and communication technologies (ICTs). More specifically, the article analyses domestication of digital media in the Swedish leisure-time centre (LTC), an institution in which children receive education and care before and after compulsory school. The study draws on qualitative in-depth interviews with 21 teachers as well as observations of LTCs. The article reveals what it means to have limited agency as an educator when ICTs are appropriated, and further illustrates the contradictory fact that mobile phones are objectified as stationary technologies. It also shows how both devices and content are incorporated in ways that are perceived suitable to the LTCs’ educational moral economy. An especially interesting finding is the extent to which domestication theory sheds light on power relations when applied outside of the domestic sphere.
