  • GARCH estimation and discrete stock prices: an application to low-priced Australian stocks
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - 0165-1765. ; 81:2, s. 215-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The GARCH model is misspecified if applied to returns calculated from discrete prices. We propose a modification of the above model for handling such cases. We find large differences between the standard and the extended model estimates, although the results sometimes are obscured by large standard errors.

  • Power and bias of likelihood based inference in the cointegration model under fractional cointegration
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier. - 0165-1765. ; 65:2, s. 143-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper investigates how fractional cointegration affects the common maximum likelihood cointegration procedure. It is shown that the likelihood ratio test of no cointegration has considerable power against fractional alternatives. In contrast to the case of a cointegrated system, the usual maximum likelihood estimator gives severely biased estimates of the long-run relation under fractional cointegration. This suggests that the standard likelihood approach should be used with caution and that a test to separate fractionally cointegrated series from series that are cointegrated of an integer order should be executed prior to estimation.

  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 52:1, s. 75-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish marginal tax scale is too complex to be known in detail by individuals. This paper indicates that perceived tax scales can be estimated jointly with a labor supply equation. The differences between the true and estimated tax scales are found to be small.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neglected heterogeneity implies bias for estimators in, e.g., the Weibull duration model. In a Monte Carlo experiment the proper maximum likelihood estimator is better than a new least squares estimator. The likelihood estimator neglecting heterogeneity is inferior.

  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier B.V. - 1873-7374 .- 0165-1765. ; 56:2, s. 177-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compare hypothetical and real payments in a Vickrey auction. The use of hypothetical payments overestimates the real willingness to pay. The results cast doubt on the validity of hypothetical willingness to pay questions for the typical respondent.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 66:3, s. 249-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate that panel unit root tests can have high power when a small fraction of the series is stationary and may lack power when a large fraction is stationary. The acceptance or rejection of the null is thus not sufficient evidence to conclude that all series have a unit root or that all are stationary.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Suppose that gifts are private information, only known to donor and donee, while bequests are public. Also suppose that parents care about the reputation that their bequest behavior will give them and that reputation deteriorates with the difference in amounts inherited. Then the optimal choice of altruistic parents is compensatory gifts and equal bequests. This is also what data show.

  • On the effectiveness of foreign exchange reserves during the 2021-22 US monetary tightening cycle
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines whether the size of foreign exchange (FX) reserves explains cross-country differences in foreign currency depreciation realized over the 2021-22 Federal Reserve monetary policy tightening that led to a sharp appreciation of the US dollar. Across a broad sample of countries, we document that an additional 10 percentage points of FX reserves/GDP held ex-ante were associated with 1.5 to 2 percent less exchange rate depreciation against the US dollar and this buffer effect was larger among less financially developed economies. Effects were more pronounced for large-reserve countries that sold reserves to intervene than for large-reserve countries that did not intervene, supporting the presence of both balance sheet and intervention channels. Higher ex-ante policy rates were also associated with less depreciation especially among financially open economies. An analysis of daily currency movements following the June 2021 FOMC meeting corroborates the main results. These findings suggest that FX reserves may promote monetary policy independence in the presence of global spillovers.

    • We present a polynomial time method for identifying the maximal set in excess demand at a given payoff vector. This set can be used in "large" partnership formation problems to identify the minimum element in the set of individually rational payoff vectors at which there is no overdemanded set of agents. This minimum element corresponds to the minimum Walrasian equilibrium price vector in a special case of the partnership formation problem.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ECONOMICS LETTERS. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the risks associated with climate change intensify, understanding its impacts on human capital development is crucial. In this paper, we analyze the causal effects of temperature on the academic performance of students in Mexico, a middle-income country facing significant climate risks and socioeconomic challenges. Using panel data on over 5.5 million students, our results show that a 1 degrees C increase in annual average temperature leads to a 0.07 and 0.08 standard deviation decrease in Spanish and math test scores, respectively. Moreover, a one standard deviation (0.93 degrees C) increase in the long-term municipal temperature average is associated with 0.04 and 0.03 standard deviation declines in those scores. The effects are context-dependent - students in historically colder municipalities actually benefit from hotter temperatures, likely due to improved learning conditions in underinsulated schools and homes. However, the detrimental impacts appear consistent across urban, rural, and socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, underscoring the vulnerability of marginalized populations to the academic consequences of climate change. Overall, our findings highlight the urgency of addressing the educational dimensions of the global climate crisis through targeted interventions and adaptive policies, particularly in lowand middle-income countries.

  • Prisons, recidivism and the age–crime profile
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765. ; 152:March 2017, s. 46-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a descriptive analysis of the economic and non-economic channels that led to a U-shaped trend in the average age of male convicts in 19th century London using detailed data from the Old Bailey central criminal court. In addition to discussing industrialization and changing attitudes towards juveniles as potential mechanisms underlying the initial decrease and subsequent increase in criminal age, we put forth a new explanation of the latter. Did the abolition of capital punishment and penal transportation, which led to the rise of the modern day prison system and the emergence of recidivism, lead to a mechanical increase in the average age of criminals?

  • Predictable non-linearities in US inflation
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765. ; 93:3, s. 323-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper compares the out-of-sample inflation forecasting performance of two non-linear models; a neural network and a Markov switching autoregressive (MS-AR) model. We find that predictable non-linearities in inflation are best accounted for by the MS-AR model.

  • Testing slope homogeneity in large panels with serial correlation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765. ; 121:3, s. 374-378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pesaran and Yamagata (Pesaran, M.H., Yamagata, T., Testing slope homogeneity in large panels, Journal of Econometrics 142, 50–93, 2008) propose a test for slope homogeneity in large panels, which has become very popular in the literature. However, the test cannot deal with the practically relevant case of heteroskedastic and/serially correlated errors. The present note proposes a generalized test that accommodates both features.
