  • Efficient collaboration between main and sub-suppliers
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 49:1, s. 25-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many sub-suppliers are interested in closer integration with main suppliers for product development. However, main suppliers have much work that needs to be coordinated, and close integration with suppliers is used only when it is required, and when additional value is created through integration. The main objective of this paper, is therefore, to discuss different supplier roles and increase the understanding of how suppliers can be integrated with the main supplier. The result is based on a case study with one main supplier and nine of its sub-suppliers, where the main supplier develops, assembles, and delivers a complete, complex product to the customer, and the sub-suppliers develop and manufacture sub-systems for the main supplier. The results give new insights into what the sub-suppliers could do in order to improve integration with the main supplier.

  • Analysis of the congruence between manufacturing strategy and production system in SMME
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 49:1, s. 91-106
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A production system must reflect a company's manufacturing strategy and the chosen competitive priorities. Tools to assess the congruence between the manufacturing strategy and the production system can hence support the companies' competitive position. In this paper, the usability of an analysis model suggested by Miltenburg [How to Formulate and Implement a Winning Plan, Productivity Press, Portland, OR, 1995], aiming at mapping manufacturing strategy and production system, is investigated. The usefulness of the analysis model is investigated in terms of how easy it is to use and in terms of the obtained results. The investigation is performed by means of empirical studies in two medium sized manufacturing companies. The result is that the model seems to be useful in the sense that, if knowledge about the underlying principles in the analysis model is at hand, it is possible to investigate the congruence between a manufacturing strategy and a production system. It is, however, believed that the analysis model needs some further development to be considered an easy to use tool, e.g. for a SMME production manager. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a development of the US Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) based on life-cycle concept of the Generalized Enterprise Reference Architecture and Methodology (GERAM) framework/ISO 15704:2000 requirements. Previous research has identified areas of concern within DoDAF by analyzing and evaluating DoDAF against GERAM and potentially assisting in its future development. This paper aims to extend existing architecture description process and artifacts within DoDAF that match the scope of the GERAM life-cycle phases. For this development we use life-cycle aspect of three well-known reference architectures (including PERA, CIMOSA, and GRAI-GIM) that were the basis in formation of GERAM.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 65:8, s. 1126-1135

    • The field of fault detection and diagnosis has been the subject of considerable interest in industry. Fault detection may increase the availability of products, thereby improving their quality. Fault detection and diagnosis methods can be classified in three categories: data-driven, analytically based, and knowledge-based methods. In this work, we investigated the ability and the performance of applying two fault detection methods to query data streams produced from hydraulic drive systems. A knowledge-based method was compared to a data-driven method. A fault detection system based on a data stream management system (DSMS) was developed in order to test and compare the two methods using data from real hydraulic drive systems. The knowledge-based method was based on causal models (fault trees), and principal component analysis (PCA) was used to build the data-driven model. The performance of the methods in terms of accuracy and speed, was examined using normal and physically simulated fault data. The results show that both methods generate queries fast enough to query the data streams online, with a similar level of fault detection accuracy. The industrial applications of both methods include monitoring of individual industrial mechanical systems as well as fleets of such systems. One can conclude that both methods may be used to increase industrial system availability.

  • Correlation-based feature extraction from computer-aided design, case study on curtain airbags design
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many high-level technical products are associated with changing requirements, drastic design changes, lack of design information, and uncertainties in input variables which makes their design process iterative and simulation-driven. Regression models have been proven to be useful tools during design, altering the resource-intensive finite element simulation models. However, building regression models from computer-aided design (CAD) parameters is associated with challenges such as dealing with too many parameters and their low or coupled impact on studied outputs which ultimately requires a large training dataset. As a solution, extraction of hidden features from CAD is presented on the application of volume simulation of curtain airbags concerning geometric changes in design loops. After creating a prototype that covers all aspects of a real curtain airbag, its CAD parameters have been analyzed to find out the correlation between design parameters and volume as output. Next, using the design of the experiment latin hypercube sampling method, 100 design samples are generated and the corresponding volume for each design sample was assessed. It was shown that selected CAD parameters are not highly correlated with the volume which consequently lowers the accuracy of prediction models. Various geometric entities, such as the medial axis, are used to extract several hidden features (referred to as sleeping parameters). The correlation of the new features and their performance and precision through two regression analyses are studied. The result shows that choosing sleeping parameters as input reduces dimensionality and the need to use advanced regression algorithms, allowing designers to have more accurate predictions (in this case approximately 95%) with a reasonable number of samples. Furthermore, it was concluded that using sleeping parameters in regression-based tools creates real-time prediction ability in the early development stage of the design process which could contribute to lower development lead time by eliminating design iterations.

  • Lessons learned : Review of LCAs for ICT products and services
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 65:2, s. 211-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Application of information and communication technology (ICT) is often expected to result in decreased environmental impacts. Several studies have, however, also addressed the possibilities of negative impacts. It is therefore important to assess environmental impacts of ICT products and services. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool for assessing the potential impacts of a product or service over the whole life-cycle, i.e. from raw material acquisition to waste management via production and use phases. The aim of this paper is to review LCA studies of ICT products and services, including a few Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) studies. Many of the studies have considered consumer products, such as computers and TVs. Other consumer products, such as game consoles and TV peripherals, as well as business products, e.g. related to networks, are however more rarely assessed. Manufacturing and use phase have the highest impact in the life cycle. Use phase seems to be the predominant in energy consumption and global warming for some ICT products but for others, especially energy efficient, low weight products, manufacturing may dominate. Rapid technological development is stressed by several authors as a source of variability of results, impacting the production processes and suppliers as well as the content and energy performance of the actual devices. In the future, conducting LCA on ICT, the research community needs to consider the limitations found in the studies conducted so far. It encompasses, among others, the need to address a broad spectrum of environmental impacts, including human and ecotoxicological impacts; modeling actual e-waste management, covering informal management when relevant; and considering user behavior in a realistic way, accounting for rebound and other indirect effects.

  • Designing solutions with the product-service systems digital twin : What is now and what is next?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital Twins (DT) are of particular interest in the domain of Product-Service Systems (PSS), to predict hardware availability, to inform about the needed features of new solutions, and to forecast the expected performances of new configurations in operation. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the extent to which ‘twins’ are applied today across the PSS life cycle, and to spotlight the ability of DT-related case studies to capture a full value perspective vs. simply attempting to represent hardware and services in the digital realm. By means of a systematic literature review combined with a mapping study, the paper reveals how only a minimal part of the existing literature is able to demonstrate how real-time physical-to-virtual and virtual-to-physical connections can be used to improve the design of servitized solutions. The analysis shows how contributions in the topic are mostly proposing frameworks and methods, as opposed to models and tools, as well as how ‘evaluation’, ‘validation’ tasks are largely neglected. As a result, the paper proposes a specialized definition of the PSS DT, together with a set of research questions that need to be answered to empower the engineering teams with relevant DT for PSS design.

  • PLM paradigm : how to lead BPR within product development field
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 60:7, s. 476-484
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design and implementation of a PLM solution in a cross-company environment is a complex and labour intensive operation, which is often coupled with a Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) project to better deploy technologies as well as methodologies and to target the system implementation on the real company needs. Enterprise Modelling (EM) languages are typically used to collect and share process knowledge among the BPR participants. Plenty of techniques are actually available at this scope and it is not always easy to understand how to select and use them in the different steps of re-engineering. The main purpose of this paper is to perform a qualitative analysis of three well known EM languages (IDEF, UML and ARIS) and to propose a new methodology, based on their integrated use, supporting BPR efforts in the Product Development domain.

  • ICSSIM — A framework for building industrial control systems security testbeds
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the advent of the smart industry, Industrial Control Systems (ICS) moved from isolated environments to connected platforms to meet Industry 4.0 targets. The inherent connectivity in these services exposes such systems to increased cybersecurity risks. To protect ICSs against cyberattacks, intrusion detection systems (IDS) empowered by machine learning are used to detect abnormal behavior of the systems. Operational ICSs are not safe environments to research IDSs due to the possibility of catastrophic risks. Therefore, realistic ICS testbeds enable researchers to analyze and validate their IDSs in a controlled environment. Although various ICS testbeds have been developed, researchers’ access to a low-cost, extendable, and customizable testbed that can accurately simulate ICSs and suits security research is still an important issue. In this paper, we present ICSSIM, a framework for building customized virtual ICS security testbeds in which various cyber threats and network attacks can be effectively and efficiently investigated. This framework contains base classes to simulate control system components and communications. Simulated components are deployable on actual hardware such as Raspberry Pis, containerized environments like Docker, and simulation environments such as GNS-3. ICSSIM also offers physical process modeling using software and hardware in the loop simulation. This framework reduces the time for developing ICS components and aims to produce extendable, versatile, reproducible, low-cost, and comprehensive ICS testbeds with realistic details and high fidelity. We demonstrate ICSSIM by creating a testbed and validating its functionality by showing how different cyberattacks can be applied. © 2023 The Authors

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Strip rolling is a typical manufacturing process, in which conventional control approaches are widely applied. Development of the control algorithms requires a mathematical expression of the process by means of the first principles or empirical models. However, it is difficult to upgrade the conventional control approaches in response to the ever-changing requirements and environmental conditions because domain knowledge of control engineering, mechanical engineering, and material science is required. Reinforcement learning is a machine learning method that can make the agent learn from interacting with the environment, thus avoiding the need for the above mentioned mathematical expression. This paper proposes a novel approach that combines ensemble learning with reinforcement learning methods for strip rolling control. Based on the proximal policy optimization (PPO), a multi-actor PPO is proposed. Each randomly initialized actor interacts with the environment in parallel, but only the experience from the actor that obtains the highest reward is used for updating the actors. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional control methods and the state-of-the-art reinforcement learning methods in terms of process capability and smoothness.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to facilitate deterministic behavior; industrial real-time communication stacks need another design than non-real-time communication stacks typically found in e.g., Internet of Things and Cloud solutions. We propose a flexible stack design that enable code reuse between testbeds and simulators, as well as how stack layers are driven and prioritized. The design can be generalized and used for non-real-time bare-metal solutions like battery powered Internet of Things. Our approach aims at extending the use of simulation during development of industrial systems in order to find logical errors and wrong assumptions earlier in the development. Conducted and evaluated experiments show that the proposed solutions are able to extend the use of simulation during development of real-time communication software. This is achieved by reusing the same code on an industrial testbed and in a discrete event simulator. In addition, the experiments show that the stack design is generalizable and enable reuse with other non-real-time embedded systems. The contribution consists of a set of building blocks for real-time systems that enable control over the system timing when executing on a simulation host while reusing the source code from an industrial testbed. Overall, this will improve the engineering situation, with respect to code reuse, flexibility and debugging. © 2023 The Author(s)

    • Digitalization refers to enabling, improving, and transforming operations, functions, models, processes, or activities by leveraging digital technologies. Furthermore, digitalization is considered one of the most powerful drivers of innovation with the potential to trigger the next wave of innovation. Today, the importance of digitalization is well-understood in Swedish government agencies and industry. Although there are several initiatives working to actively drive change, one question is key: What is the next step? Data analytics is a promising way to turn information into outcomes, enhance decision-making, make data-driven discoveries, minimize risk, and unearth valuable insights that would otherwise remain hidden. This paper presents survey results on data analytics adoption and usage within Swedish industry, to highlight post-digitalization industry needs. To this end, a questionnaire was designed and distributed. Answers from more than 100 respondents from the manufacturing, technology, engineering, telecommunications, and automotive industries in Sweden were collected and analyzed. The assessment results show that Swedish industry has a high resources readiness score. This suggests that the necessary tools, and human resources are in place. Moreover, its cultural readiness level, which focuses on the acceptance of data-driven decision-making, scores between high and very high. At the same time, the information systems readiness level is in between medium and high, except in the telecommunication domain. However, the organizational readiness level is between medium and low, which shows that the organizations are not structured to enable the adaptation of data analytics and the business impacts of data analytics are not in place yet. These findings suggest that the industry should use the advantages of the current cultural, information systems, and resources readiness capabilities and concentrate efforts on exploring the business impacts of data analytics, ensuring the support from executive managers, and implementing data analytics protocols to improve organizational readiness. Moreover, the industry should consider structural changes in organizations, in addition to systematically initiating proper planning, timing, budgeting, and setting of clear key performance indicators/metrics in order to ameliorate the organizational readiness of data analytics.

    • Information technology (IT) could be an important tool for reaching efficiency and effectiveness within maintenance, provided that correct and relevant IT is applied. In this paper, a conceptual model for identifying maintenance management IT requirements is developed, with its practical application in a process for the IT requirements identification for maintenance management. The process is exemplified in two real-world cases. This paper suggests that the factors of goals, purpose and use should be considered on organisational and individual level in order to identify the IT demands. Correct level of IT applied, i.e. IT consisting of correct functionality required for planning, conducting and following up maintenance activities according to the state of maintenance and the strategy adapted, will contribute to successful maintenance management. Moreover, this paper promotes the use of a structured procedure for the identification of IT requirements for maintenance management.

    • The industrial domain is increasingly depending on the rapid technological advances, and to utilize it, new competencies will need to be acquired by the employees in order to strive towards innovation and business success. In this new context, under also the prism of globalization, the rules of competition are redefined, and competent labor is the deciding factor. Especially in fast-paced knowledge-based economies, there is greater dependence on knowledge, information and high employee competency levels, which also play a key role in innovation. It is therefore in the interest of both corporations and individual employees to not only retain existing knowledge, but continuously enhance it, by expanding it and utilizing it more efficiently. Competent people are the key to future success and offer organizations their only sustainable competitive advantage. Among the plethora of available tools to enhance employee competencies, massive open online courses (MOOCs) are an emerging phenomenon. They have taken the world by storm and recently they also started penetrating the corporate environments. This work focuses exactly on this white-spot area i.e., the relationship of MOOC-empowered employee competencies and innovation. A model is proposed, empirical data is collected via a survey, and is statistically analyzed. Initial results indicate a positive contribution of MOOC related factors such as culture, knowledge, communication, technology, and cost to innovation in modern enterprises. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prolonging garment longevity is a well-recognized key strategy to reduce the overall environmental impact in the textile and clothing sector. In this context, change or degradation in esthetic or visual appeal of a garment with usage is an important factor that largely influence its longevity. Therefore, to engineer the garments for a required lifetime or prolong longevity, there is a need for predictive systems that can forecast the trajectory of visual degradation based on material/structural parameters or use conditions that can guide the practitioners for an optimal design. This paper develops a deep learning based predictive system for washing-induced visual change or degradation of selected garment areas. The study follows a systematic experimental design to generate and capture visual degradation in garment and equivalent fabric samples through 70 cycles in a controlled environment following guideline from relevant washing standards. Further, the generated data is utilized to train conditional Generative Adversarial Network-based deep learning model that learns the degradation pattern and links it to washing cycles and other seam properties. In addition, the predicted results are compared with experimental data using Frechet Inception Distance, to ascertain that the system prediction are visually similar to the experimental data and the prediction quality improves with training process.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) concept combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI), a key enabling technology, opens up new opportunities for improved quality management and advanced problem-solving. However, there is a lack of applied research in industrial plants that would allow for the widespread deployment of this framework. Thus, the purpose of this article was to apply AI in an industrial application in order to develop application insights and identify the necessary prerequisites for achieving ZDM. A case study was done at a Swedish manufacturing plant to evaluate the implementation of a defect-detection strategy on products prone to misclassification and on an imbalanced data set with very few defects. A semi-supervised learning approach was used to learn which vibration properties differentiate confirmed defects from approved products. This method enabled the calculation of a defect similarity ratio that was used to predict how similar newly manufactured products are to defective products. This study identified four prerequisites and four insights critical for the development of an AI solution supporting ZDM. The key finding demonstrates how well traditional and innovative quality methods complement one another. The results highlight the importance of starting data science projects quickly to ensure data quality and allow a ZDM detection strategy to build knowledge to allow for the development of more proactive strategies, such as the prediction and prevention of defects.

  • LAD-Net : A lightweight welding defect surface non-destructive detection algorithm based on the attention mechanism
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 161
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrasound welding technology is widely applied in the field of industrial manufacturing. In complex working conditions, various factors such as welding parameters, equipment conditions and operational techniques contribute to the formation of diverse and unpredictable line defects during the welding process. These defects exhibit characteristics such as varied shapes, random positions, and diverse types. Consequently, traditional defect surface detection methods face challenges in achieving efficient and accurate non-destructive testing. To achieve real-time detection of ultrasound welding defects efficiently, we have developed a lightweight network called the Lightweight Attention Detection Network (LAD-Net) based on an attention mechanism. Firstly, this work proposes a Deformable Convolution Feature Extraction Module (DCFE-Module) aimed at addressing the challenge of extracting features from welding defects characterized by variable shapes, random positions, and complex defect types. Additionally, to prevent the loss of critical defect features and enhance the network's capability for feature extraction and integration, this study designs a Lightweight Step Attention Mechanism Module (LSAM-Module) based on the proposed Step Attention Mechanism Convolution (SAM-Conv). Finally, by integrating the Efficient Multi-scale Attention (EMA) module and the Explicit Visual Center (EVC) module into the network, we address the issue of imbalance between global and local information processing, and promote the integration of key defect features. Qualitative and quantitative experimental results conducted on both ultrasound welding defect data and the publicly available NEU-DET dataset demonstrate that the proposed LAD-Net method achieves high performance. On our custom dataset, the F1 score and mAP@0.5 reached 0.954 and 94.2%, respectively. Furthermore, the method exhibits superior detection performance on the public dataset. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the era of Industry 4.0 and digitalization, planning solutions need to co-exist with each other and be able to manage higher complexity and with a higher performance. As the concept smart production planning and control is a part of industry 4.0, it is highly relevant to study and is in this paper explored on the four elements of smart PPC (real-time data management, dynamic production planning and re-planning, autonomous production control, and continuous learning). This paper provides a framework for linking the four elements of smart PPC with data quality issues in state-of-the-art production planning and control environments. Maintaining a high standard of data quality in the business processes aids the organization to stay competitive in its market. Hence, our assumption is that a high level of data quality is needed in production planning and control for a high-performance outcome. The empirical part of our study results in a bar-chart of seven data quality problems and their occurrences together with their causes in PPC. According to the empirical data results, inaccurate data entries is the most common data quality problem related to PPC. The causes of the inaccurate data entries can be linked to human resources and organizational control. Future research should strengthen the validity of the proposed linkages between data quality problems and elements of smart PPC and implications on strategic, tactical, and operational planning levels.

  • Integrating Cross-sectional Imaging based Reverse Engineering with Rapid Prototyping

  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 57:2, s. 131-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an integrated system of cross-sectional imaging based reverse engineering (RE) and rapid prototyping (RP) for reproducing complex objects. The system consists of four modules: cross-sectional image measurement, 3D reconstruction, stereo lithography (STL) file generation, and RP slice file generation. During cross-sectional image measurement, the object to be measured is encased within resin and then milled, layer-by-layer, using an NC milling machine. After each layer is machined, a CCD camera is used to capture the newly exposed cross-sectional image of the object. The contours of the cross-sectional image are further extracted through image processing and segmentation. A collection of the contour data is acquired by the cross-sectional image measurement module. While a 3D CAD model can be reconstructed by the 3D reconstruction module from the contour data, its STL file and RP slice file are generated directly from the contour data. The algorithm for STL file generation from cross-sectional contours consists of three major steps: (1) preprocessing of cross-section images for data reduction, (2) Delaunay triangulation of contours in the first and last layers and (3) triangulation of contours between adjacent layers. This integrated system and the processing algorithms are further validated through four examples. Crown Copyright © 2005 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 58:4, s. 295-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • oday, feature-based process planning has been popular in academia and industry with its ability to rigorously integrate design and manufacturing. To date, research on feature sequencing is mainly focused on using expert systems or knowledge-based systems, geometric based approaches, unsupervised-leaming or artificial neural network, and genetic algorithms. The approach presented in this paper, however, is a hybrid one using both knowledge-based rules and geometric reasoning rules. In addition to feature sequencing rules formulation, our research contributions consist of: (1) determining machining precedence constraints by a set of defined knowledge-based rules, (2) grouping machining features into setups based on tool approaching directions, and (3) sequencing features within each setup through geometric reasoning. The sequence of materials (features) to be removed depends on two types of interactions: adjacent interaction and volumetric interaction. A set of rules for geometric reasoning is therefore developed to generate feature sequence. The developed approach has been implemented as the Sequence Generator module in a Distributed Process Planning system and is validated through a case study.

  • Automatic definition of engineer archetypes : A text mining approach
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the rapid and continuous advancements in technology, as well as the constantly evolving competences required in the field of engineering, there is a critical need for the harmonization and unification of engineering professional figures or archetypes. The current limitations in tymely defining and updating engineers' archetypes are attributed to the absence of a structured and automated approach for processing educational and occupational data sources that evolve over time. This study aims to enhance the definition of professional figures in engineering by automating archetype definitions through text mining and adopting a more objective and structured methodology based on topic modeling. This will expand the use of archetypes as a common language, bridging the gap between educational and occupational frameworks by providing a unified and up-to-date engineering professional figure tailored to a specific period, specialization type, and level. We validate the automatically defined industrial engineer archetype against our previously manually defined profile.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last decade, a shift toward Sustainable Development (SD) in engineering has started in the educational and occupational framework. Therefore, the need to rethink the professional figures of an engineer has become a necessity. Unfortunately, neither a formal methodology to define a standard engineer archetype nor procedural methods to evaluate such archetypes' contribution to SD are investigated. This paper bridges the first gap by proposing a general methodology to define specific engineer archetypes as technical competences from educational -Semi Structured Intended Learning Outcomes (SS-ILOs) -and occupational -European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) -frameworks. The second gap is addressed by a procedural method based on indirect mapping of the identified archetypes onto United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs). Since Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is the working environment of future engineers and has a promising potential to achive SDGs, I4.0 technologies influences on SDGs are used as a bridge to evaluate sustainability of the defined enigineer archetypes. Finally, we provide the application of our proposed methodology to the Industrial engineering case study. The results show that significant limitations toward sustainability remain open challenges. However, the intrinsic nature of the industrial engineer is confined to some specific goals, and a characteristic signature on sustainability emerged.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of IoT has propelled the traditionally known Product-Service System (PSS) to be characterized by smarter technologies, enabling them to collect and process data from the operational stage and facilitate communication between the customer and the provider. Commonly referred to as Smart Product-Service Systems (Smart PSS), these systems promise to create value at a personal level by collecting and effectively utilizing the operational data. However, one of the fundamental challenges is the lack of awareness as to what kind of data can be collected from the operational stage and what can be achieved from this data. This paper systematically reviews scientific literature to underline the kind of data being collected from the operational stage, the purposes being achieved from that data, and how they lead to value creation. The systematic review of 60 representative studies enabled the definition of the operational scenario that comprises 4 dimensions of data and 10 classes of data within these dimensions to generically identify what kind of data is being collected. The intend presented by various authors led to the generalization of 5 themes that target different purposes of collecting data. Further, the papers were classified with regards to functional or non-functional requirements to see how data in different approaches are leveraged for value creation. Finally, the discussion highlights the current gaps in the literature and raises several opportunities for future contributions.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collecting and utilizing product life-cycle data is both difficult and expensive for products that move between different industrial settings at various points of the product life-cycle. Product-centric approaches that present effective solutions in tightly integrated environments have been problematic to deploy across multiple industries and over longer timespans. Addressing deployment costs, incentives, and governance, this paper explores a blockchain-based approach for the deployment of product-centric information systems. Through explorative design science and systematic combining, the deployment of a permissionless blockchain system for collecting product life-cycle data is conceptualized, demonstrated, and evaluated by experts. The purpose of the blockchain-based solution is to manage product data interactions, to maintain an accurate single state of product information, and to provide an economic incentive structure for the provision and the deployment of the solution. The evaluation by knowledgeable researchers and practitioners identifies the aspects limiting blockchain-based deployment of solutions in the current industrial landscape. Combining theory and practice, the paper lays the foundation for a blockchain-based approach to product information management, placing design priority on inter-industrial and self-sustained deployment.

  • Incorporating process and data heterogeneity in enterprise architecture : Extended AMA4EA in an international manufacturing company
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The heterogeneity of production processes is a serious problem faced by international manufacturing companies. The transformation towards Industry 4.0 and the adoption of Internet-of-Things (IoT) have produced huge amounts of heterogeneous data. The production processes and data from sites across the world cannot be shared and compared at the enterprise level. Therefore, companies cannot improve their production processes and the current state-of-the-art of enterprise architecture (EA) cannot address this heterogeneity problem. To mitigate and address this heterogeneity problem, we extend the automated modelling with abstraction for EA (AMA4EA). We demonstrate the extension using the processes and data of an international manufacturing company in Denmark. The results show that the extended AMA4EA addresses the process heterogeneity problem by automatically creating EA models that relate and compare production processes from different sites. In addition, the extended AMA4EA extracts value from heterogeneous data and visualizes them in EA models. The extended AMA4EA exhibits a novel method in EA to incorporate process and data heterogeneity. This is a significant advance to EA research because it supports EA in modelling the different realities of companies. In addition, the extended AMA4EA demonstrates how production managers can jointly analyse production processes from different sites. As a result, managers can identify potential opportunities for improvement across production sites. Through EA models, they can access data and documentation stored on different enterprise systems. These contributions pave the foundation for understanding and improving the performance of heterogeneous production processes for international manufacturing companies.

    • In order to develop a well-balanced product, it is necessary to consider not only the customers, but also all the other stakeholders throughout the product's life cycle. A holistic view is needed in order to manage all criteria, considering as many perspectives and interests as possible. This paper presents a model that provides a common understanding for stakeholders involved, together with the requirements, functions and sub-systems of the product being developed. The model supports the decision-making process, and supports the designer to balance the interests of different stakeholders and the related functions. This results in a product developed according to all known demands from various stakeholders. This, in turn, will enhance the possibility of success in the market. The model has been applied in an industrial case study.

  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapidly evolving needs of shippers, rising competition, advancement in digital technologies and a quest to increase cost and operational efficiencies are all driving the digital transformation of maritime logistics. However, in contrast to other industries such as media, telecom, banking, retail and even other traffic modes, the often family-controlled and network-centric liner shipping industry has historically been conservative in adopting innovations; hence, it is still far behind in embracing digitalization. Based on semi-structured interviews with senior executives of liner shipping companies, this study explores the current digital maturity levels, the opportunities provided by digitalization and the underlying challenges that hinder its implementation in the liner shipping segment within the larger maritime logistics industry and identifies the essential leading strategies of digitalization in this segment. The digital maturity categories applied to liner shipping provide an opportunity for practitioners in this industry to evaluate their business functions’ digital maturity levels. Furthermore, based on interview data, digital transformation for the maritime logistics industry is defined, as well as 9 major barriers and 19 different pathways to digital transformation are identified. Understanding the key challenges and success factors in the industry is a key to approaching digitalization problems and developing a healthy digital transformation process. © 2022 The Authors

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 68, s. 27-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scheduling is a fundamental activity in modern shop floors. It is also known to be a highly complex problem which has motivated several sub-formulations and the subsequent models. Traditional approaches, typically enumerative or heuristic, struggle to contain the computation complexity and often present solutions for restricted cases that feature unrealistic assumptions in respect to the system size, flow of products and the system logistics/behaviour. The multiagent-based architecture presented in this paper is aligned with a set of emerging architectures that seek to explore more heterarchical decision and control models to circumvent the limitations of the traditional approaches. The main distinguishing factor of the proposed architecture is that it directly addresses (re)routing/local scheduling of products in plug and produce systems. It does not make any assumptions on the alignment of the orders and, instead, it dynamically handles the potential rescheduling of the orders already on the system based on the available resources, and their state, in a time efficient way. The architecture was tested under a simulation environment, that is geometrically accurate and that supports plug and produce in runtime, to characterize its performance under dynamic conditions.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the advent of the Internet and the progressive development and consolidation of a wide range of web standards and technologies as well as the advances in distributed artificial intelligence (DAI), namely the multi agent system concept, new opportunities have emerged for conceiving, modelling and enhancing shop floor's performance and response.Modern IT-supported production paradigms denote a common concept where the shop floor is a lively entity composed by interacting intelligent modules whose individual and collective function adapts and evolves ensuring the fitness and adequacy of the organization, owning the system, in tackling profitable but volatile business opportunities. The self-organizing and peer to peer nature of these systems renders a collective behaviour and dynamics that are fundamentally new. Conventional diagnostic methods and tools have not been designed targeting the envisioned systems therefore lack the required support. In this paper the emerging IT-based production paradigms are surveyed as well as the existing diagnostic methods whose adequacy is analysed. The resulting requirements and characteristics are exposed to stress the need for rethinking current diagnostic practices in future automation systems.

    • This work presents a cognitive analytics platform for anomaly detection which is capable to handle, analyze and exploit resourcefully machine data from a shop-floor of factory, so as to support the emerging and growing needs of manufacturing industry. The introduced system contributes to industrial digitization and creation of smart factories by providing a generic platform which is a complete solution supporting standards-based factory connectivity, data management, various AI models training and comparisons, live predictions and real-time visualizations. The proposed system is built on a micro-service architecture, in order to be extendable and adaptive over time, and contains three core modules, the Data Acquisition, the Knowledge Management and the Predictive maintenance, which contribute to machine failure prediction and activate predictive maintenance procedures, to efficient production schemes and decision making, to monitor anomalies and handle unforeseen conditions, to predict future behaviours on time series etc. The proposed platform utilizes continuous re-training mechanisms enabling a self learning approach for the delivery of AI solutions, usable also for various production data, guaranteeing the quality of results without continuous monitoring and human-resources allocation for AI models’ retraining. This cognitive platform is supported by machine learning techniques and deep learning architectures in order to achieve the desired performance in the management of factory processes and needs. All the information generated by the proposed platform is provided to the end user through a user interface that utilizes advanced visualization techniques.

  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study assesses the effect of some extended Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) capabilities (Collaboration, Analytics, Web-portals, Add-ons) and ERP use on ERP value. The research conducted, followed a mixed-methods approach using an exploratory study (Delphi) and the resource-based view of the firm to understand the ERP capabilities and develop three competing models surrounding these capabilities, ERP use, and ERP value, and then a confirmatory study using a large-scale survey of firms in Germany, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, to test these models. Results suggest that the moderation model best explains the relationships, while the additive model highlights the direct effects of both ERP capabilities and ERP use on ERP value in an interesting way. Results highlight that the role of ERP use is more critical when moderating ERP capabilities and ERP value, as well as when additive to ERP capabilities, than when mediating between ERP capabilities and ERP value. The practical value of the study lies in the fact that this investigation provides new knowledge on how some extended ERP capabilities may positively influence value from investment, and together with ERP use, provide business value.

    • Successful product development requires the consideration of multiple engineering disciplines and the quantification of tradeoffs among conflicting objectives from the very early design phases. The single-largest challenge to do so is the lack of detailed design information. A possible remedy of this issue is knowledge-based engineering. This paper presents a knowledge-based master model approach that enables the management of concurrent design and analysis models within different engineering disciplines in relation to the same governing product definition. The approach is exemplified on an early phase structural design of a turbo-fan jet engine. The model allows geometric-, structural mechanics- and rotor-dynamic- models to be concurrently integrated into a multi-disciplinary design and optimization loop. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An effective error handling mechanism plays an important role to ensure the reliability and robustness of the application of controller area network (CAN) in controlling dynamic systems. This paper addresses a new online error handling approach or named per-sample-error-counting (PSeC) technique that tends to replace native error handling protocol in controller area network (CAN). The mechanism is designed to manage transmission errors of both sensor and control data in networked control system (NCS) used in controlling dynamic system such that the stability of the feedback system is preserved. A new parameter denoted as maximum allowable number of error burst (MAEB) is introduced in which MAEB is selected based on available bandwidth of the CAN network. MAEB serves as the maximum number of attempt of re-transmission of erroneous data per sample which allows the maximum transmission period to be known and guaranteed for time-critical control system. The efficacy of the proposed method is verified by applying the algorithm on the fourth order inverted pendulum system simulated on Matlab/Truetime simulator and the performance is benchmarked with the existing CAN error management protocol. The simulation run under various systems conditions demonstrate that the proposed method results in superior system performance in handling data transmission error as well as meeting control system requirement. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

  • 2018

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a new concept in which a digital twin derived from a digital product description will automatically perform assembly planning and orchestrate the production resources in a manufacturing cell. Thus the manufacturing cell has generic services with minimal assumptions about what kind of product will be assembled, while the digital product description is designed collaboratively between the designer at an OEM and automated services at potential manufacturers. This has several advantages. Firstly, the resulting versatile manufacturing facility can handle a broad variety of products with minimal or no reconfiguration effort, so it can cost-effectively offer its services to a large number of OEMs. Secondly, a solution is presented to the problem of performing concurrent product design and assembly planning over the organizational boundary. Thirdly, the product design at the OEM is not constrained to the capabilities of specific manufacturing facilities. The concept is presented in general terms in UML and an implementation is provided in a 3D simulation environment using Automation Markup Language for digital product descriptions. Finally, two case studies are presented and applications in a real industrial context are discussed

    • The utility of multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) in the process industry can be further improved by applying knowledge-based systems (KBS) principles. First, the extensive volumes of process data generated in a production process can be pre-assessed by the KBS according to set rules. Second, the KBS can make a selection between various MSPC model alternatives. Third, the KBS may support the plant operators when evaluating the MSPC output results. This is shown in this preliminary study where a KBS was applied to an existing MSPC application on a paperboard machine. It is suggested that these experiences may also successfully be applied with other continuous processes in the manufacturing industry. © 2005 Published by Elsevier B.V.

  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 65:2, s. 306-313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to provide a research outlook on the concept of decentralized freight intelligence, i.e. autonomous freight making localized routing decisions. A review of research literature on decentralized intelligence in freight transport serves as the foundation of the analysis. The analysis reveals a scarcity of scientific evidence to suggest a successful introduction of decentralized freight intelligence. Among numerous conceptual findings, the analysis reveals a dearth of research on the clear and present challenges of introducing and adopting decentralized freight concepts in contemporary multi organizational open freight systems. For practitioners this paper provides useful input on future ICT development in the transport field. In particular, due to the lack of guidance on adoption of decentralized freight, a focus on non-networked benefits of information technology is to be recommended. Given the large number of projects, papers and various initiatives related to decentralized freight intelligence, this paper, to the authors' best knowledge, provides a novel technology adoption perspective on decentralized freight intelligence research.

  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 63:8, s. 835-843
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The investigation of sustainable enterprise interoperability requires an explicit position of what constitutes the enterprise. In particular, human aspects like agency, sense-making, interpretation, common understanding, etc., must be taken into account. To this end, the purpose of this contribution is to make an inquiry into interoperability from the perspective of the Activity Domain Theory (ADT). In this theory, the enterprise is considered as a constellation of activity domains. The activity domain is characterized by the activity modalities - objectivation, contextualization, spatialization, temporalization stabilization, transition - which represent human, innate predispositions for coordinating actions. Interoperability is focused to one particular modality: the transition between activity domains. An example from the telecom industry is used to illustrate the approach. Implications for various aspects of interoperability are discussed. In conclusion, it is argued that the ADT is an alternative framework for advancing the understanding of sustainable interoperability between enterprises and enterprise systems.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interoperability, defined as the satisfaction of a communication need between two or more actors, is a sought after quality for enterprises in today's competitive environment. For a decision maker, understanding the effects of a changing market place and understanding how to adapt to the new environment is essential. Sustainable interoperability is an approach where such dynamic environments are considered, including how to adapt to the new environments. This paper presents a modeling language for describing architectures from an interoperability perspective and a formalism for inferring the degree of interoperability from the architecture models, thus supporting sustainable interoperability. The interoperability language is expressed as a Unified Modeling Language, UML, class diagram specifying classes, attributes, and relationships relevant for interoperability modeling. The class diagram is also augmented with a set of statements in the Object Constraint Language, OCL, supporting automated interoperability prediction.

  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 64:8, s. 881-886
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The 2013 Special Issue of Computers in Industry Journal describes papers on 'Interoperability and Future Internet for Next-Generation Enterprises' from the 3rd International IFIP Working Conference on Enterprise Interoperability. The first article, 'Towards a business model reference for interoperability services' by Otto, Ebner, Baghi, and Bittmann, addresses the lack of business models for enterprise interoperability. The next article, 'Structural elements of coordination mechanisms in collaborative planning process and their assessment through maturity models' by Cuenca, Boza, and Alemany, considers the maturity assessment of a specific kind of business-level enterprise interoperability, namely collaborative planning processes. An article by Coutinho, Cretan, and Jardim-Goncalves, titled 'Sustainable Interoperability on Space Mission Feasibility Studies,' proposes a framework for achieving sustainable interoperability covering both businesspeople aspects and technology aspects.

  • Utilising more of the loading space in intermodal line trains – measures and decision support
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 64:2, s. 146-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of this article is to identify, characterise and qualitatively evaluate the existing measures for increasing the utilisation of loading space in intermodal road-rail freight line trains. Normally, these trains operate like intercity passenger trains, because they make short unit load transhipment stops along rail corridors in order to travel comparatively small and short flows. The measures for loading space utilisation include adapting the train’s capacity, changing the departure times, altering the train routes and sending trucks to different terminals as well as replacing rail transport with trucks. Some of the measures require improved information sharing, and executives can strengthen the effect of the measures by adding decision support systems and price incentives to transport buyers.

  • Effects of combining product-centric control and direct digital manufacturing: The case of preparing customized hose assembly kits
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Computers in Industry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-3615. ; 82, s. 82-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The case study presents the effects of combining product-centric control and direct digital manufacturing (DDM) in the preparation of customized assembly kits. The theoretical contribution of the paper is in describing a combinatorial innovation in operations and production management: how to use productcentriccontrol to make DDM highly efficient when there are many generic and partly generic production resources. Evidence is found of many beneficial outcomes such as waste reduction, simplified planning, and improved customer responsiveness for the case of preparing customized assembly kits for hydraulichoses.

  • A similarity-assisted multi-fidelity approach to conceptual design space exploration
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computers in Industry. - 0166-3615. ; 151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In conceptual design studies engineers typically utilize data-based surrogate models to enable rapid evaluation of design objectives that otherwise would be too computationally expensive and time-consuming to simulate. Due to the computationally expensive simulations, the data-based surrogate models are often trained using small sample sizes, resulting in low-fidelity models which can produce results that are not trustworthy. To mitigate this issue, a similarity-assisted design space exploration method is proposed. The similarity is measured between design points that have been evaluated through lower-fidelity data-based surrogate models and design points that have been evaluated using higher-fidelity physics-based simulations. This similarity information can then be used by design engineers to better understand the trustworthiness of the data produced by the low-fidelity surrogate models. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that such a similarity measurement can be used as an indicator of the trustworthiness of the lower-fidelity model predictions. Moreover, a second similarity metric is proposed for measuring the similarity of new designs to legacy designs, thus highlighting the potential to reuse knowledge, analysis models, and data. The proposed method is demonstrated by means of an aero-engine structural component conceptual design study. An open-source software tool developed to assist in data visualization is also presented.

  • The role of the customer order decoupling point in production and supply chain management
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Computers in Industry. - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615. ; 61:9, s. 863-868
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to compete successfully, operations in any type of firm need to be strategically aligned to the market requirements. This concerns both manufacturing and supply chain operations. The customer order decoupling point (CODP) is getting increasing attention as an important input to the design of manufacturing operations as well as supply chains. This paper investigates the impact of the position and role of the CODP on issues of concern for production and supply chain management. The focus is on the design and strategic planning aspects of the supply chain, and the design of manufacturing planning and control systems. The paper proposes a dual design approach for production and supply chain planning systems; one type of system for operations upstream the CODP and another type of system for downstream operations in order to fully support the characteristics and objectives of each respective part of the supply chain.
