    • Radiative lifetimes were determined for two short-lived states in neutral nitrogen. Following photodissociation and two-photon excitation employing the same UV source, excitation to higher states was performed with a distributed feedback dye laser (DFDL). The lifetimes were found to be tau(2p2 4d4D7/2) = 17(3) ns and tau(2p2 5s4P5/2) = 22(3) ns.

    • We have measured radiative lifetimes for selenium and tellurium resonance levels by using short pulse laser excitation in differentially heated resonance cells. We obtained tau(3S1 Se I) = 2.9(5) ns and tau(3S1 Te I) = 3.1(5) ns, which together with branching ratio values given by Ubelis and Berzinsh yield the absorption oscillator strength f(abs)(Se I, 196.0 nm) = 0.074(16) and f(abs)(Te I, 214.3 nm) = 0.098(17).

  • Time-resolved Spectroscopic Studies of the 7p 2p States of Neutral Silver Following Vuv Excitation

    • The radiative lifetimes of the 7 p2P3/2, 1/2 states of silver and the hyperfine structure of the 7 p2P3/2 state have been measured using pulsed laser excitation and direct observation of the induced fluorescence light decay. In order to excite this doublet, VUV radiation at 185 nm was applied, as generated by frequency tripling and anti-Stokes Raman shifting of the output of a Nd: YAG laser pumped dye laser. The lifetimes were found to be tau = 255(20) ns and tau = 285(25) ns for the J = 3/2 state and J = 1/2 state, respectively. The hyperfine structure of the 7 p2P3/2 state was measured by the quantum beat method. The magnetic dipole interaction constant for the Ag-107 isotope was found to be a = - 4.5(2) MHZ.

    • Lifetimes for the3S1,3P0, 1, 2 and3D1, 2, 3 states in the 3s23p5p configuration of silicon have been determined using stepwise dye laser excitation and time resolved detection. A comparison is made with theoretical values, calculated using multi-configuration Hartree-Fock wavefunctions. Laser-evaporation was used to produce free silicon atoms by focusing a Nd: YAG laser on a rotating silicon target.

    • Two different techniques, Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy on a hollow-cathode discharge and fluorescence spectroscopy on a collimated atomic beam produced from a hollow-cathode discharge, have been used for high-resolution laser-spectroscopy measurements on the 3d10 4p and 5p states in neutral Copper. The relative merits of the two techniques are discussed.

    • Cross sections for electron energy transfer from the initial rotational state J' of the two lowest vibrational levels upsilon' = 0 and upsilon' = 1 of excited dimers Na2(A) to potassium atoms as described by Na2(A1Sigma(u)+, upsilon'J') + K(4S) --> Na2 (X1Sigma(g)+, upsilon''J'')+K(4P)+DeltaE have been examined by laser-induced fluorescence. A strong increase of the cross section by as much as an order of magnitude has been observed for those dimer upsilon'J'-levels for which the dipole transitions are close to resonance of the 4S-4P transitions in the atom (DeltaE < 4 cm-1). The absolute cross sections for energy transfer have been calculated by the Rabitz approximation of first-order perturbation theory. In the case of closest energy resonance (DeltaE = 0.9 cm-1) the cross section is Q = 7.8 x 10(-13) cm2.

    • In the recently introduced high-contrast transmission version of saturated absorption laser spectroscopy, narrow signals are obtained from dense atomic samples subject to strong pumping. A study of possible systematic shifts of the signals in this domain of rather extreme experimental conditions was performed in order to assess the validity of spectroscopic data obtained with this technique. Certain signal components were found to be slightly shifted while others were not. Further, a theoretical study of the behaviour of overlapping signals in the high-contrast regime is presented. In particular, the question of whether structures buried under the natural linewidth could be resolved is addressed.

    • The np P Rydberg sequence of neutral Ytterbium is strongly perturbed. These perturbations were monitored by measuring the g(J) factors and lifetimes of 19 states, including both singlets and triplets as well as states from the perturbing configurations. A pulsed laser setup was used. The g(J) factors were obtained from a Zeeman quantum-beat experiment and the lifetimes by direct observation of the decay of the fluorescence light.

    • We have performed lifetime measurements in the sequences of2S1/2 and2D3/2 states for the alkali-like 4d10 ns,nd configurations of neutral silver. Selective stepwise excitations from the 4d10 5s2S1/2 ground state were performed using two pulsed dye lasers. Optical transients were recorded and evaluated with regard to the decay time. The lifetime results are compared with those of a theoretical study in which a model potential has been used to describe the polarisation of the 4d shell.

    • The radiative lifetimes of the states in the (n=5-8) 3snp P-1(1) sequence of neutral magnesium were investigated using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence. Excitation from the 3s2 S-1(0), ground state was performed using VUV radiation, which was produced by resonant sum-difference frequency mixing in a krypton gas cell. We find tau(n=5): 54(3) ns, tau(n=6): 140(10) ns, tau(n=7): 290(20) ns, tau(n=8): 475(40) ns. These results were found to be in fair agreement with a Multi Configuration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) calculation.

    • The natural radiative lifetime of the 3s 4p 1P1 level of neutral magnesium was measured by pulsed level-crossing spectroscopy at the short excitation wavelength of 202.6 nm. We obtained tau = 13.4(5) ns for this state, strongly deviating from a previous beam-foil result, but in good agreement with a multi-configuration Hartree-Fock calculation. A discussion of the applicability of the pulsed Hanle effect method is given.

    • In the EUV spectrum of foil-excited 24 MeV Ni ions the decays of the 3 s 3 p3 and 3 s2 3 p 3 d levels to the 3 s2 3 p2 levels of the ground configuration have been observed. For most of the levels decay curves have been obtained. The lifetime results compare well with predictions from semi-empirically scaled HXR calculations. Some problems with cascade repopulations will be discussed.

    • The intercombination transition 3s21S0 -3s3p3P1 0 in Ni16+ and Cu17+ has been studied by beam-foil spectroscopic methods. Decay curve analysis yields lifetime values of (12.0±1.0)ns and (8.8±0.6)ns for Ni and Cu in agreement with various predictions.

    • Time resolved laser spectroscopy in the VUV spectral region is applied to investigate the (n=5-8) 3d(10) 4snp P-1(1) series of neutral zinc. The natural lifetimes of this series were measured by time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence. We find tau(n=5)=11.7(9) ns, tau(n=6)=80(8) ns, tau(n=7)=179(20) ns and tau(n=8)=356 (35) ns. These results are compared with a theoretical calculation.

    • The Lande g(J) factors in the 6snd(1,3)D(2) sequences as well as states from the perturbing configurations of neutral Ytterbium have been measured by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Strong singlet-triplet mixing effects were observed. The g(J) factors were measured using the Zeeman quantum-beat technique following step-wise laser excitation. The experiment provided new data for checking the Multi-channel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT) used in energy-level and lifetime analysis.

    • Measurements of natural radiative lifetimes in atomic tellurium in the 5 p(3)7p configuration are reported. Two-step laser excitation was applied on tellurium vapour in a cell that was differentially heated and pumped through a capillary. The decay of the fluorescence signal was recorded at different vapour pressures. The following four radiative lifetime values were obtained: 7p P-5(1): 128(11) ns, 7p P-5(2): 99(8) ns, 7p P-3(1): 82(10) ns and 7p P-3(2): 124(8) ns.
