    • escarpment edge, deep gorges and distinct knickzones in river profiles characterize the landscape on the Western Escarpment of the Andes between ~5°S and ~18°S (northern Peru to northern Chile). The Western Escarpment straddles strong north-south and east-west precipitation gradients, which we exploit in order to determine how climate affects denudation rates in three river basins spanning an otherwise relatively uniform geologic and geomorphologic setting. The Western Escarpment reflects an ongoing transient response to major tectonic perturbation in the Late Miocene when surface uplift created a steep ramp separating drainage systems above the growing escarpment from those below. Upstream of this ramp, and now forming the uplifted Meseta/Altiplano (~3000 m a.s.l.), streams remain graded to the Late Miocene base level constituted by a series of Tertiary volcanic-volcanoclastic rocks, Streams below the ramp have responded to the Late Miocene surface uplift by incising deeply into fractured Mesozoic rocks via a series of steep, headward retreating knickzones that grade to the present-day base level defined by the Pacific Ocean. We find that the Tertiary units function as cap-rocks, which aid in the parallel retreat of the sharp escarpment edge and upper knickzone tips. Upstream of these knickzones, on the Meseta/Altiplano, 10Be-derived catchment denudation rates of the Rio Piura (5°S), Rio Pisco (13°S) and Rio Lluta (18°S) average ~10 mm ky–1 irrespective of precipitation rates; whereas, downstream of the escarpment edge, denudation rates range from 10 mm ky-1 to 250 mm ky-1 and correlate positively with precipitation rates, but show no significant correlation with hillslope angles or channel steepness. These relationships are explained by the presence of the cap-rock and climate-driven fluvial incision that steepens hillslopes to near-threshold conditions. In addition, valley width and the extent of dissection both appear to increase with increasing precipitation to the north, consistent with climate-forcing of landscape morphology in the deeply incised terrain beneath the escarpment edge.Since escarpment retreat and the precipitation pattern were established at least in the Miocene, we speculate that the present-day distribution of morphology and denudation rates has probably remained largely unchanged during the past several millions of years as the knickzones have propagated headward into the plateau.

    • The etymology and historic usage of such terms as anabranch', anastamose' and braided' within river science are reviewed. Despite several decades of modern research to define river channel typologies inclusive of single channels and multiple channel networks, typologies remain ill-conditioned and consequently ill-defined. Conventionally employed quantitative planform characteristics of river networks possibly cannot be used alone to define channel types, yet the planform remains a central part of all modern classification schemes, supplemented by sedimentological and other qualitative channel characteristics. Planform characteristics largely have been defined using non-standardized metrics describing individual network components, such as link lengths, braiding intensity and bifurcation angles, which often fail to separate visually-different networks of channels. We find that existing typologies remain pragmatically utilitarian rather than fundamentally physics-based and too often fail to discriminate between two distinctive and important processes integral to new channel initiation and flow-splitting: (i) in-channel bar accretion, and (ii) channel avulsion and floodplain excision. It is suggested that, first, if channel planform is to remain central to river typologies, then more rigorous quantitative approaches to the analysis of extended integral channel networks at extended reach scales (rather than network components) are required to correctly determine whether visually-different' channel patterns can be discriminated consistently; and, second, if such visually-different styles do in fact differ in their governing processes of formation and maintenance. A significant question is why do so many seemingly equilibrium network geometries possess a large number of anabranches in excess of predictions from theoretical considerations? The key research frontier with respect to initiating and maintaining multichannel networks remains the understanding and discrimination of accretionary-bar flow splitting versus avulsive processes. Existing and new knowledge on flow splitting processes needs to be better integrated into channel typologies.

    • This paper presents detailed geomorphological and sedimentological investigations of small recessional moraines at Fjallsjökull, an active temperate outlet of Öræfajökull, southeast Iceland. The moraines are characterised by striking sawtooth or hairpin planforms, which are locally superimposed, giving rise to a complex spatial pattern. We recognise two distinct populations of moraines, namely a group of relatively prominent moraine ridges (mean height ~1.2 m) and a group of comparatively low‐relief moraines (mean height ~0.4 m). These two groups often occur in sets/systems, comprising one pronounced outer ridge and several inset smaller moraines. Using a representative subsample of the moraines, we establish that they form by either (i) submarginal deformation and squeezing of subglacial till or (ii) pushing of extruded tills. Locally, proglacial (glaciofluvial) sediments are also incorporated within the moraines during pushing. For the first time, to our knowledge, we demonstrate categorically that these moraines formed sub‐annually using repeat uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery. We present a conceptual model for sub‐annual moraine formation at Fjallsjökull that proposes the sawtooth moraine sequence comprises (i) sets of small squeeze moraines formed during melt‐driven squeeze events and (ii) larger push moraines formed during winter re‐advances. We suggest the development of this process‐form regime is linked to a combination of elevated temperatures, high surface meltwater fluxes to the bed, and emerging basal topography (a depositional overdeepening). These factors result in highly saturated subglacial sediments and high porewater pressures, which induces submarginal deformation and ice‐marginal squeezing during the melt season. Strong glacier recession during the summer, driven by elevated temperatures, allows several squeeze moraines to be emplaced. This process‐form regime may be characteristic of active temperate glaciers receding into overdeepenings during phases of elevated temperatures, especially where their englacial drainage systems allow efficient transfer of surface meltwater to the glacier bed near the snout margin.

    • A three-dimensional flow model that uses the RNG k-epsilon turbulence model and a non-equilibrium wall function was applied to the River Klaralven in the southwest part of Sweden. The objectives were to study the nature of the flow in the river bifurcation and to investigate the short-term sediment transport patterns in the river. The effectiveness of three-dimensional flow models depends upon: (1) how well the river geometry and it surface roughness are modelled; and (2) the choice of the closure model. Improvements were obtained by modelling the river in two parts: the entire river reach, and a selected part. Composite Manning coefficients were used to account for roughness properties. The method requires a calibration process that ensures the water surface profiles match the field data. The k-epsilon model under-predicted both the extent of flow separation zones and the number of secondary flow regions having a spiral motion, in comparison with the RNG k-epsilon model. The 3-D model could predict with good accuracy both the general and secondary flow fields in the river. The results agreed well with the 3-D velocity measurements using an acoustic Doppler current profiler. A conceptual model was developed that accounts for the development of secondary flows in a river bifurcation having two bends. The main flow feature in the river cross-sections was the existence of multiple counter-rotating spiral motions. The number of spiral motions increased as the river bends were approached. The river bends also caused vorticity intensification and increased the vertical velocities. The application of the 3-D flow model was extended by solving the sediment continuity equation. The sediment transport patterns were related to the secondary flow fields in the river. The sediment transport patterns at the river bifurcations are characterized by the growth of a sandbank.

    • In this paper we report on observations of glacial landscapes at the head of geomorphologically interpreted palaeo-ice streams, i.e. palaeo-ice-stream onsets. Our work is based on the results of systematic palaeoglaciological mapping of the portion of north-eastern Canada formerly covered by the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Four different cases are considered and analysed in detail: one is the Dubawnt Lake Ice Stream and the others are smaller (<70 km long) palaeo-ice streams. We found that in this region onset zones are generally characterized by a heterogeneous landform record and are more easily recognized when landscapes typical of partially frozen beds are present. Based on publicly available topographical and geological data as well as theoretical developments, we discuss the conditions and controls on the location of these onset zones and their potential stability. Except for the Dubawnt Lake Ice Stream, we found that, although topography and geology are important conditioning factors, the geomorphological imprint of palaeo-ice-stream onsets cannot be explained without invoking the role of the basal thermal boundary between cold- and warm-based ice. Finally, we observed that, except for the Dubawnt Lake Ice Stream, the onset zones of large ice streams are rarely preserved, and we suggest two possible explanations for this. We conclude that although the same qualitative processes are present under the majority of ice streams, conditions for the preservation of the onset zones are more likely to be met in the case of relatively small ice streams because these are more rapidly deglaciated.

    • The role of spawning salmonids in altering river bed morphology and sediment transport is significant, yet poorly understood. This is due, in large part, to limitations in monitoring the redd‐building process in a continuous and spatially extended way. A complementary approach may be provided through the use of a small seismic sensor network analysing the ground motion signals generated by the agitation of sediment during the redd‐building process. We successfully tested the viability of this approach by detecting and locating artificially generated redd signals in a reach of the Mashel River, Washington State, USA. We then utilize records of 17 seismic stations, in which we automatically detected seismic events that were subsequently manually checked, yielding a catalogue of 45 potential redd‐building events. Such redd‐building events typically lasted between 1 and 20 min and consisted of a series of clusters of 50–100 short energetic pulses in the 20–60 Hz frequency range. The majority (>90%) of these redd‐building events occurred within 11 days, predominantly during the early morning and late afternoon. The seismically derived locations of the signals were in agreement with independently mapped redds. Improved network geometry and installation conditions are required for more efficient detection, robust location and improved energetic insights into redd‐building processes in larger reaches. The passive and continuous nature of the seismic approach in detecting redds and describing fish behaviour provides a novel tool for fish biologists and fisheries managers, but also for fluvial geomorphologists, interested in quantifying the amount of sediment mobilized by this ecosystem engineer. When complemented with classic approaches, it could allow for a more holistic picture of the kinetics and temporal patterns (at scales from seconds to multiple seasons) of a key phase of salmonid life cycles.

    • Quantifying glacial erosion contributes to our understanding of landscape evolution and topographic relief production in high altitude and high latitude areas. Combining in situ Be-10 and Al-26 analysis of bedrock, boulder, and river sand samples, geomorphological mapping, and field investigations, we examine glacial erosion patterns of former ice caps in the Shaluli Shan of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. The general landform pattern shows a zonal pattern of landscape modification produced by ice caps of up to 4000 km(2) during pre-LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) glaciations, while the dating results and landforms on the plateau surface imply that the LGM ice cap further modified the scoured terrain into different zones. Modeled glacial erosion depth of 0-0.38 m per 100 ka bedrock sample located close to the western margin of the LGM ice cap, indicates limited erosion prior to LGM and Late Glacial moraine deposition. A strong erosion zone exists proximal to the LGM ice cap marginal zone, indicated by modeled glacial erosion depth >2.23 m per 100 ka from bedrock samples. Modeled glacial erosion depths of 0-1.77 m per 100 ka from samples collected along the edge of a central upland, confirm the presence of a zone of intermediate erosion in-between the central upland and the strong erosion zone. Significant nuclide inheritance in river sand samples from basins on the scoured plateau surface also indicate restricted glacial erosion during the last glaciation. Our study, for the first time, shows clear evidence for preservation of glacial landforms formed during previous glaciations under non-erosive ice on the Tibetan Plateau. As patterns of glacial erosion intensity are largely driven by the basal thermal regime, our results confirm earlier inferences from geomorphology for a concentric basal thermal pattern for the Haizishan ice cap during the LGM.

    • Using field observations and geochemical and digital terrain analyses, we describe the structure and thickness of the regolith across a climosequence on the island of Hawaii to gain insight into the relative roles of precipitation and the near-surface hydrologic structure in determining weathering patterns. In the wet portion of the climosequence, where the long-term water balance is positive, the regolith thickness reaches an observed maximum of similar to 40m and appears limited by the geomorphic base-level of the landscape. However, even within this thick regolith, distinct units of varying weathering intensity occur; the vertical ordering of which largely reflects differences in the initial permeability structure of the basalt flows rather than a systematic decrease in weathering intensity downwards from the ground surface. In the dry portion of the climosequence, where the long-term water balance is negative, the regolith thickness is confined to similar to 1m, is highly dependent on the inferred permeability structure of the basalt flows, and is independent of geomorphic base-level. Weathering intensity also varies according to permeability structure and decreases in this thin regolith with distance beneath the ground surface. The abrupt change in regolith depth and character that coincides with the transition from net-positive to net-negative long-term water balance implies that small changes in precipitation rates around a neutral water balance result in large changes in the distribution and depth of weathering. Together our observations indicate that the distribution and depth of weathering in basalts (and probably other lithologies) might be best understood by considering how precipitation interacts with the complicated near-surface permeability structure over regolith-forming timescales to weather rock in the vadose zone.

    • The Okavango wetland in northern Botswana is one of the world's largest inland deltas. The delta is a dynamic environment with shifting channel routes, causing growth and decay of flanking wetlands, and giving birth to islands. Primary island nuclei are formed by fluvial processes and bioengineering, and subsequently grow into secondary larger islands of irregular shape by clastic and chemical sedimentation, and later by coalescence. This article presents classifications and quantitative estimations of channels, wetlands and islands of the Okavango Delta. Islands were classified dependent on composition, pattern of composition, shape and juxtaposition. 90 per cent of all islands in the entire wetland were identified, with a classification accuracy of 60 to 85 per cent. Smaller islands of the nucleus types dominate the upper parts of the delta, whereas larger secondary islands are more common in the distal part, a reflection of the age of the islands. Islands in the entry valley of the delta, the Panhandle, are larger in the top end - the primary region of recent elastic sedimentation. The overall size distribution of islands in the delta, however, shows no clumps, indicating that island growth is a uniform process over time and space. The total area flooded at least every decade is approximately 14 000 km(2), of which 9000 km(2) is classified as actual wetland. Channel meandering decreases from the Panhandle to the distal part of the delta, with the abandoned Thaoge channel as an exception. Occurrence of fluvially formed islands in the distal delta indicates that the water flow and area of inundation must once have been much larger.

    • This paper explores the geomorphological context and impact of the widely-occurring, linear emergent macrophyte, Sparganium erectum. Forty-seven sites across Britain were selected for field investigation, spanning the range of environmental conditions within which Sparganium erectum had been found to be present in previous analyses of national data sets. A combination of descriptive graphs and statistics, principal components analysis, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to explore the large multivariate data set collected at the 47 sites. The analyses showed that Sparganium erectum is present in significant quantities in relatively narrow and shallow (< 18m wide and<0.9m deep to the limit of terrestrial vegetation), low gradient (maximum 0.004) channels of varying bed sediment calibre (cobble to silt). Within these environments, S. erectum stands (features) were associated with fine sediment retention, aggradation and submerged landform construction, leading to bench development and so, potentially, to adjustments in channel form and position. Sediment retention and landform construction within S. erectum features was most strongly apparent within reaches with a relatively high S. erectum cover and the presence of large area S. erectum features. It was also associated more weakly with S. erectum features that were comprised of relatively higher densities of plants with relatively smaller inter-plant spacing and fewer leaves. The sediment retained in S. erectum features and associated bench and bank toe deposits showed larger numbers and species of viable seeds, indicating the potential for colonization and growth of other species on S. erectum features once they aggrade above the low flow water level and are no longer a suitable habitat for S. erectum.

    • The last decade of geophysical seafloor mapping in the Arctic Ocean from nuclear submarines and icebreakers reveals a wide variety of glaciogenic geomorphic features at water depths reaching 1000 in. These findings provide new and intriguing insights into the Quaternary glacial history of the Northern Hemisphere. Here we integrate multi- and single beam bathymetric data, chirp sonar profiles and sidescan images from the Chukchi Borderland and Lomonosov Ridge to perform a comparative morphological seafloor study. This investigation aims to elucidate the nature and provenance of ice masses that impacted the Arctic Ocean sea floor during the Quaternary. Mapped glaciogenic bedforms include iceberg keel scours, most abundant at water depths shallower than similar to 350-400 m, flutes and megascale glacial lineations extending as deep as similar to 1000 m below the present sea level, small drumlin-like features and morainic ridges and grounding-zone wedges. The combination of these features indicates that very large glacial ice masses extended into the central Arctic Ocean from surrounding North American and Eurasian ice sheets several times during the Quaternary. Ice shelves occupied large parts of the Arctic Ocean during glacial maxima and ice rises were formed over the Chukchi Borderland and portions of the Lomonosov Ridge. More geophysical and sediment core data combined with modeling experiments are needed to reconstruct the timing and patterns of these events.

  • Using a GIS filtering approach to replicate patterns of glacial erosion

    • In order to extend our knowledge of glacial relief production in mountainous areas new methods are required for landscape reconstructions on a temporal resolution of a glacial cycle and a spatial resolution that includes the most important terrain components. A generic data set and a 50 m resolution digital elevation model over a study area in northern Sweden and Norway (the present day landscape data set) were employed to portray spatial patterns of erosion by reconstructing the landscape over successive cycles of glacial erosion. A maximum-value geographic information system (GIS) filtering technique using variable neighbourhoods was applied such that existing highpoints in the landscape were used as erosional anchor points for the reconstruction of past landscape topography. An inherent assumption, therefore, is that the highest surfaces have experienced insignificant down-wearing over the Quaternary. Over multiple reconstruction cycles, proceeding backwards in time, the highest summits increase in area, valleys become shallower, and the valley pattern becomes increasingly simplified as large valleys become in-filled from the sides. The sum of these changes reduces relief. The pattern of glacial erosion, which is to 60% correlated to slope angle and to 70% correlated to relative relief, is characterized by (i) an abrupt erosional boundary below preserved summit areas, (ii) enhanced erosion in narrow valleys, (iii) restricted erosion of smooth areas, independently of elevation, (iv) eradication of small-scale irregularities, (v) restricted erosion on isolated hills in low-relief terrain, and (vi) a valley widening independent of valley directions. The method outlined in this paper shows how basic GIS filtering techniques can mimic some of the observed patterns of glacial erosion and thereby help deduce the key controls on the processes that govern large-scale landscape evolution beneath ice sheets.

    • The usefulness of large-scale, low-relief, high-level landscapes as markers of uplift events has become a subject of disagreement among geomorphologists. We argue that the formation of low-relief surfaces over areas of large extent and cutting across bedrock of different age and resistance must have been guided by distinct base levels. In the absence of other options the most likely base level is sea level. We have analysed West Greenland landscapes in a recent study by combining the cooling history from apatite fission-track analysis (AFTA) data with the denudation history from landscape analysis and the stratigraphic record. An important difference between our approach and that of classical geomorphology is that we now have the ability to document when thick sections of rocks have been deposited and then removed. The present-day high-level plateau in West Greenland is the remnant of a planation surface that was formed by denudation that lasted 1 km of cover was removed after maximum burial at the Eocene–Oligocene transition. Here we present additional AFTA data to show that the planation surface is the end-product of Cenozoic denudation even in basement areas and argue that Phanerozoic sediments – most likely of Cretaceous–Palaeogene age – must have been present prior to denudation. The planation surface was offset by reactivated faults and uplifted to present-day altitudes of up to 2 km. The uplift occurred in two late Neogene phases that caused incision of valleys below the planation surface and their subsequent uplift. We therefore find that the elevated and deeply dissected plateau is evidence of episodic post-rift uplift that took place millions of years after cessation of sea-floor spreading west of Greenland. We suggest that other margins with similar morphology may also be characterized by episodic post-rift uplift unrelated to the processes of rifting and continental separation, rather than being permanently uplifted since the time of rifting, as is commonly assumed.

    • River channels, riparian and floodplain forms and dynamics are all influenced strongly by biological processes. However, the influence of macroinvertebrates on entrainment and transport of river sediments remains poorly understood. We use an energy-based approach to explore the capacity of benthic animals to move surficial, gravel-bed particles in field and laboratory settings and use the results to assess the relative significance of biological and physical benthic processes. Our results showed that in 11 British gravel-bed rivers, the maximum energy content (i.e., calorific content) of macroinvertebrate communities generally matched the flow energy associated with median discharges and, at multiple sites, exceeded that of the 10-year return interval flood. A series of laboratory experiments used to estimate the minimum energy expended by signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) when performing geomorphic work established that crayfish move gravel particles at energy levels below that expected of the flow, complicating direct comparisons of the capacity for macroinvertebrates and fluvial flows to influence bed mobility. Our findings suggest that the influence of macroinvertebrate communities in either promoting or suppressing, the mobilisation of the bed may be large compared to equivalent values of fluvial energy. Based on these findings, we conclude that in the gravel-bed rivers studied, the macroinvertebrate community's potential to perform geomorphic work matches or exceeds the stream power during most of the year. Although our study examined biological and fluvial energy systems separately, it is important to recognise that in nature, these systems are highly interactive. It follows that utilising the energy framework presented in this paper could lead to rapid advances in both fluvial biogeomorphology and river management and restoration.

    • Kuannersuit Glacier, a valley glacier on Disko Island in west Greenland, experienced a major surge from 1995 to 1998 where the glacier advanced 10.5 km and produced a similar to 65 m thick stacked sequence of debris-rich basal ice and meteoric glacier ice. The aim of this study is to describe the tectonic evolution of large englacial thrusts and the processes of basal ice formation using a multiproxy approach including structural glaciology, stable isotope composition (delta O-18 and delta D), sedimentology and ground-penetrating radar. We argue that the major debris layers that can be traced in the terminal zone represent englacial thrusts that were formed early during the surge. Thrust overthrow was at least 200-300 m and this lead to a 30 m thick repetition of basal ice at the ice margin. It is assumed that the englacial thrusting was initiated at the transition between warm ice from the interior and the cold snout. The basal debris-rich ice was mainly formed after the thrusting phase. Two sub-facies of stratified basal ice have been identified; a lower massive ice facies (S-M) composed of frozen diamict enriched with heavy stable isotopes overlain by laminated ice facies (S-L) consisting of millimetre thick lamina of alternating debris-poor and debris-rich ice. We interpret the stratified basal ice as a continuum formed mainly by freeze-on processes and localized regelation. First laminated basal ice is formed and as meltwater is depleted more sediment is entrained and finally the glacier freezes to the base and massive diamict is frozen-on. The increased ability to entrain sediments may partly be associated with higher basal freezing rates enhanced by loss of frictional heat from cessation of fast flow and conductive cooling through a thin heavily crevassed ice during the final phase of the glacier surge. The dispersed basal ice facies (D) was mainly formed by secondary processes where fine-grained sediment is mobilized in the vein system of ice. Our results have important implications for understanding the significance of basal ice formation and englacial thrusting beneath fast-flowing glaciers and it provides new information about the development of landforms during a glacier surge.     • Boulders are globally widespread and influence processes across many landscapes including hillslopes, coasts, rivers and extra-terrestrial settings. Boulders are described as particles, sufficiently large, that they have a disproportionate effect on the surrounding landscape. Moving beyond this conceptual definition, however, requires a somewhat arbitrary decision of how to define a minimum boulder size. The implications of boulder definition on study findings are rarely considered. We investigate the suitability of five boulder definitions, two based on fixed sizes: (1) 0.26 m and (2) 1 m, and three definitions which vary based on system characteristics: (3) grain mobility, (4) grain protrusion and (5) surface grain size distribution (> 84th percentile, D84). We consider the impact of definition on calculated boulder metrics, and, for the >1m and >D84 definitions, their association with channel and catchment characteristics across 20 boulder-bed streams in northern Sweden. We also surveyed river managers responsible for restoring these rivers, to gain a practitioner insight on boulder size definition. We found that boulder definition matters; for metrics relating to the number or density of boulders, the >D84 and >1m size definitions were negatively correlated. Surveys indicated the importance of communicating boulder definition. We conclude that, whilst the best choice of boulder size definition will vary based on the questions of interest and techniques employed, evaluating the implications of the chosen boulder size definition and communicating the reasoning behind boulder definition choice is crucial.

  • The zoogeomorphology of case-building caddisfly : Quantifying sediment use

    • Caddisfly (Trichoptera) larvae are an abundant and widespread aquatic insect group characterized by the construction of silk structures, including nets and cases. Case-building caddisfly have the potential to modify the sorting and mobility of sand and fine gravel via: (1) case construction, resulting in altered sediment properties; (2) transporting sediment incorporated into cases over the river bed; and (3) changing the structure of river beds via burrowing activity. To investigate these mechanisms, it is necessary to understand the mass, size distribution and spatial variability of sediment use by case-building caddisfly larvae. We quantified the mineral sediment used by individuals and communities of case-building caddisfly in 27 samples, from three sites on a gravel-bed stream. The mass and size distribution of sediment in individual cases varied between taxa (mass = 0.001-0.83 g, D-50 = 0.17-4 mm). The mean mass of sediment used by the caddisfly community was 38 g m(-2) and varied locally. Sediment use was predominantly coarse sand (D-50 = 1 mm). 64% of sediment use was attributable to Agapetus fuscipes (Glossosomatidae). Due to within-species variability in case mass, the abundance of most taxa, including A. fuscipes, was only weakly associated with the mass of sediment used by this species, at the river scale. Whilst the caddisfly community used a small percentage of the total sediment available (average 2.99% of the 1-1.4 mm size fraction), A. fuscipes used more fine sediment in their cases at sites where it was more available. Despite variability in local habitat, all sites supported diverse case-building caddisfly communities utilizing mineral sediment. Consequently, geomorphological effects of case-building caddisfly are potentially widespread. The results provide novel insights into the specific grain sizes and quantities of fine sediment used by caddisfly larvae, which represents an important step towards understanding their zoogeomorphic activities.

    • River management is founded on predictable self-organisation between river form and catchment controls in alluvial rivers. However, a substantial proportion of rivers are not fully alluvial. In previously glaciated landscapes, boulder-rich glacial till influences river channel form and process. Increasing interest in nature- and process-based river restoration requires knowledge of pre-disturbance natural processes, which does not exist for semi- and non-alluvial rivers in Fennoscandia. We aimed to determine the role of Pleistocene glaciation and subsequent deglaciation versus Holocene fluvial processes in controlling channel form of boulder-bed rivers in Fennoscandia. We quantified morphological characteristics of northern Swedish boulder-bed rivers, in which channel morphology was minimally impacted by humans, and used the degree of alluvial signatures to infer fluvial and legacy glacial controls. We conducted surveys of reach-scale channel geometry, boulder and wood distributions and catchment characteristics for 20 reference reaches (drainage area: 11–114 km2). Reaches ranged in slope from 1% to 8% and were extremely diverse in channel geometry. Rivers showed little self-organisation at the reach scale; no association exists between channel width and channel slope or bed sediment size. Boulders were rarely clustered into bedforms (e.g., step-pools) typical of boulder-bed mountain rivers. Drainage area was positively correlated with channel capacity but not channel width, slope or sediment size. Channel boulder density was best predicted by surveys of terrestrial boulders. Consequently, channel geometry, boulder size and the distribution of boulders were primarily controlled by legacy glacial conditioning rather than current fluvial processes, with some alluvial adjustment of smaller particles within the boulder template. Therefore, restoration of semi-alluvial rivers should take into account local sediment and geomorphic conditions rather than use management principles built for fully alluvial rivers.

    • The Siljan region hosts Europe´s largest impact structure. The high-relief landscape, with a central granite dome bordered by lake basins, contains an array of glacial and shore-level landforms. We investigated its deglaciation history by mapping and analysing landforms on high resolution LiDAR-based Digital Surface Models coupled with well-dated sediment successions from peat and lake sediment cores. The granite dome and bordering areas are characterized by streamlined terrain and ribbed moraine with a streamlined overprint. These suggest an ice-flow direction from NNW with wet-based thermal conditions prior to deglaciation. During its retreat, the ice sheet was split into thinner plateau ice and thicker basin ice. Sets of low-gradient glaciofluvial erosion channels suggest intense ice-lateral meltwater drainage across gradually ice-freed slopes, while 'down-the-slope' erosion channels and eskers show meltwater drainage from stagnated plateau ice. Thick basin ice receded with a subaqueous margin across the deep Siljan–Orsasjön Basin c. 10,700–10,500 cal. BP. During ice recession the ingression of the Baltic Ancylus Lake led to diachronous formation of highest shoreline marks, from c. 207 m in the south to c. 220 m a.s.l. in the north. Differential uplift resulted in shallowing of the water body, which led to the isolation of the Siljan–Orsasjön Basin from the Baltic Basin at c. 9800 cal. BP. The post-isolation water body – the ‘Ancient Lake Siljan' – was drained through the ancient Åkerö Channel with a water level at 168–169 m a.s.l. during c. 1000 years. A later rerouting of the outlet to the present course was initiated at c. 8800 cal. BP, which led to a lake-level lowering of 6–7 m to today’s level of Lake Siljan (c. 162 m a.s.l.). This study shows the strength of an integrated methodological approach for deciphering the evolution of a complex landscape, combining highly resolved geomorphological analysis with well-dated sediment successions.

    • Here we present a novel application of landscape smoothing with time to generate a detailed chronology of a large and complex dune field. K'gari (Fraser Island) and the Cooloola Sand Mass (CSM) dune fields host thousands of emplaced (relict) and active onlapping parabolic dunes that span 800 000 years in age. While the dune fields have a dating framework, their sheer size (~1930 km2) makes high-resolution dating of the entire system infeasible. Leveraging newly acquired (n = 8) and previously published (n = 20) optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages from K'gari and the CSM, we estimate the age of Holocene dunes by building a surface roughness (σC)–age relationship model. In this study, we define σC as the standard deviation of topographic curvature for a dune area and we demonstrate an exponential relationship (r2 = 0.942, RMSE = 0.892 ka) between σC and timing of dune emplacement on the CSM. This relationship is validated using ages from K'gari. We calculate σC utilizing a 5 m digital elevation model and apply our model to predict the ages of 726 individually delineated Holocene dunes. The timing of dune emplacement events is assessed by plotting cumulative probability density functions derived from both measured and predicted dune ages. We demonstrate that both dune fields had four major phases of dune emplacement, peaking at <0.5, ~1.5, ~4, and ~8.5 ka. We observe that our predicted dune ages did not create or remove major events when compared to the OSL-dated sequence, but instead reinforced these patterns. Our study highlights that σC–age modelling can be an easily applied relative or absolute dating tool for dune fields globally. This systematic approach can fill in chronological gaps using only high-resolution elevation data (3–20 m resolution) and a limited set of dune ages.

    • Subglacial conditions strongly influence the flow of ice-sheets, in part due to the availability of melt water. Contemporary ice sheets are retreating and are affected by increased melting as climate warms. The south Swedish uplands (SSU) were deglaciated during the relatively warm BOlling-AllerOd interval, and by studying the glacial landforms there it is possible to increase the understanding of the subglacial environment during this period of warming. Across the study area, vast tracts of hummocks have long been recognized. However, recent mapping shows a pattern of elongated zones of hummocks radially oriented, hereafter referred to as hummock corridors'. Morphometric parameters were measured on the hummock corridors using a 2m horizontal resolution digital elevation model. Corridor width varies between 0.2 and 4.9km and their length between 1.5 and 11.8km. A majority of hummock corridors are incised in drumlinised till surfaces. The pattern of hummock corridors shows a clear relation to the overall ice-flow. Further, hummock corridors do not follow topographic gradients, and in at least one place an esker overlies hummocks on the corridor floor. The lateral spacing of hummock corridors and corridor morphology are similar to tunnel valleys, eskers and glaciofluvial corridors reported elsewhere. Such relationships support a subglacial genesis of the corridors in the SSU by water driven by the subglacial hydraulic gradient and that hummock corridors are forms that can be identified as tunnel valleys and glaciofluvial corridors (GFC). Ages were assigned to hummock-corridor cross-sections from a deglacial reconstruction of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet. By comparing the frequency of corridors per age interval with climate variations from a Greenland ice core, we hypothesize that an increase in the number of corridors is related to the BOlling-AllerOd warming, indicating a higher rate of delivery of surface melt water to the bed at this time.     • Processes controlling sediment yield vary over a range of timescales, although most process-based observations are extremely short. Lake sediments, however, can be used to extend the observational timescale and are particularly useful when annually laminated (varved) sediment is present. The sediment record at Kassjön (N. Sweden) consists of ∼6400 varves, each 0·5–1 mm thick. Image analysis was used to determine grey-scale variation and varve thickness from which annual minerogenic accumulation rate (MinAR) (mg cm−2 year−1) was inferred for the period 4486 BC – AD 1900. MinAR varies on annual to centennial scales and mainly reflects channel bank erosion by the inflow streams. The mineral input reflects the intensity of the spring run-off, which is dependent on the amount of snow accumulated during the winter, and hence MinAR is a long-term record of variability in past winter climate; other factors will be a variable response to catchment uplift, vegetation succession and pedogenesis. A major shift from low to high MinAR occurred ∼250 BC, and peaks occurred around AD 250, 600, 1000, 1350 and 1650. Wavelet power spectrum analysis (confirmed by Fourier analyses) indicated significantly different periodicities throughout the period 4000 BC – AD 1700, including 275 years for the period 4000 BC – 2900 BC, 567 years for the period 2901 BC – 1201 BC, and 350 and 725 years for the period 1200 BC – AD 1700. The long-term, centennial scale variability (∼350 years) may reflect solar forcing (cf the 385-year peak in tree-ring calibrated 14C activity) but interestingly, there is no obvious link to high frequency forcing, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation. The high resolution component of the record highlights the relevance of varved lake sediment records for understanding erosion dynamics in undisturbed forested catchments and their link to long-term climate dynamics and future climate change.

    • Proglacial lakes are effective sediment traps but their impact on the reliability of downstream sediment records to reconstruct glacier variability remains unclear. Here, we investigate the sedimentary signature of the recent recession of Steffen Glacier (Chilean Patagonia, 47 degrees S) in downstream fjord sediments, with a focus on identifying the trapping (decreased downstream sediment yield) and filtering (removal of coarse particles) effectiveness of a growing intermediate proglacial lake. Four sediment cores were collected along a 14 km longitudinal transect in Steffen Fjord and the sediment physical and chemical properties were compared with aerial imagery at high temporal resolution. The caesium-137 (Cs-137) chronology of the most distal core and sediment trap data suggest that sediment accumulation in the fjord remained relatively stable through time, despite the accelerating glacier recession and the growth of Steffen proglacial lake. This is in contrast with many studies that indicate a decrease in sediment yield during proglacial lake expansion. It implies that the increase in sediment export due to accelerating meltwater production may be balanced by the sediment trapping effect of the growing proglacial lake. The fjord sediments show a slight fining upward accompanied by a marked decrease in flood-induced grain-size peaks, most likely due to the increasing filtering and dampening effect of the expanding proglacial lake. Our findings show that the filtering effect of the proglacial lake reached a threshold in 1985, when the lake attained an area of 2.02 km(2). The additional 5 km of glacier recession during the following 32 years did not have any significant impact on downstream sedimentation. This study confirms that proglacial lakes act as sediment traps but it indicates that (1) the trapping effect can be outpaced by accelerating glacier recession and (2) the filtering effect becomes stable once the lake attains a certain critical size.

    • In geomorphology, connectivity has emerged as a framework for understanding the transfer of water and sediment through landscapes. Over the past decade, sessions on (dis)connectivity at the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), and more recently, three mini-conferences in 2020 and 2021 called ‘Connectivity Conversations’, organized by the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) working group on ‘Connectivity in Geomorphology’, have created a space for the exchange of ideas relating to (dis)connectivity in geomorphology and related disciplines. The result of these initiatives has been a collection of research articles related to a special issue (SI) entitled ‘(Dis)connectivity in hydro-geomorphic systems – emerging concepts and their applications’. In this article, we provide a synthesis that embraces the SI contributions related to the application of the connectivity concept in different environments and geomorphic process domains, spatial and temporal scales, types and spatial dimensions of connectivity and the role of human impacts and associated river and catchment management aspects.

    • Geomorphological processes are an integral part of ecosystem functioning and ecosystem functioning affects geomorphological processes. Increasingly widespread acknowledgement of this simple idea is manifest in a vigorous research community engaged with questions that address the two-way interaction between biota and geomorphology, at a range of scales and in a variety of terrestrial and aquatic environments. Geomorphological disturbances are a core element of biogeomorphological interest, and although the disciplines of geomorphology and ecology have each developed languages and theories that help to explore, model and understand disturbance events, little attempt has been made to draw together these approaches. Following a brief review of these issues, we introduce thirteen papers that investigate the interactions and feedbacks between geomorphological disturbance regimes and ecosystem functions. These papers reveal the singularity of wildfire impacts, the importance of landsliding for carbon budgeting and of vegetation accumulation for landsliding, the zoogeomorphic role of iconic and Cinderella animals in fluvial geomorphology, biophysical interactions in aeolian, fluvial and torrential environments and the utility of living ecosystems as archives of geomorphic events. Most of these papers were first presented in a conference session at the European Geoscience Union General Assembly in 2010 and several others are from recent volumes of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms.

    • Seven sites within the mountain region of Abisko, northern Sweden, were selected for measurement of solifluction movement rates and correlation with the local environmental factors. Grids with sizes from 20 m x 30 m to 50 m x 100 m included both solifluction landforms and adjacent ground. Positions of movement markers and the terrain were recorded and the grid areas were digitally reconstructed. This allowed topography, vegetation and soil texture (fraction of fine material) surfaces to be interpolated and used together with data on soil moisture in statistical analyses. Significant correlations differ from site to site indicating that environmental factors have varying importance and inter-relations depending on the local setting. Geomorphic work was also assessed within the grids. The results indicate measurable geomorphic work where no landforms are present. These areas may make larger contributions to sediment displacement than where solifluction landforms exist. Solifluction is an important denudational agent in the region and has its greatest impact on landscape development in the western part of the region.

    • A new method is presented to assess decadal solifluction lobe movement and volumetric changes at the catchmentscale. The method is based on photogrammetrical analysis of orthorectified repeat aerial photography in a geographic informationsystem (GIS). High resolution aerial photographs from two valleys in northern Sweden, Kärkevagge and Låktatjåkka valleys,are used to quantify changes of the lobe fronts, as an indication of solifluction rates over a period of 41 years. Two methods areexplored, the flow direction method and the front line method, in order to quantify the movement rates. Results show thatthe maximum combined root mean square error (RMSE) and resolution error amount to c. 1·7 m; no clear preference of onemeasurement method over the other was found. Application potential of the method is promising but reliability depends on themovement rates of the landforms and sufficient time span between the images. In the pilot study the measured yearly movementover the period 1959–2000 ranges from not-detectable to 63 mm/yr. Not-detectable means that movement cannot be detectedwithin the resolution used in the study. Lobe advance rates are similar to measured surface movement rates and volumetricsediment flux by solifluction is found to be considerably lower than a previous estimate by Rapp (1960). Implications for lobeadvance models are discussed. Photogrammetrical analysis is recommended as an important tool for detecting decadalsolifluction movement at the catchment scale.

    • River gravel mobility is an important control on river behaviour, morphology, and ecosystem processes. Gravel stability is dependent on abiotic flow and sediment properties, alongside less widely acknowledged biotic processes. The quagga mussel (Dreissena bugensis), a highly invasive bivalve, frequently occurs at high population densities in rivers and lakes. Quagga mussels attach to benthic sediments using byssal threads, which might affect sediment stability and thereby broader river geomorphology. We aimed to (1) characterize controls of quagga mussel sediment attachment by conducting a field survey in an invaded river, (2) investigate resultant changes in the critical shear stress needed to entrain fluvial bed materials via an ex situ flume experiment, for measured average (135 m−2) and potential future (270 m−2) mussel densities, and (3) model how this may affect sediment transport rates. From field surveys, mean quagga mussel density was 122 m−2, attaching to an average of 591 g m−2 of mineral bed sediments. Across the survey reach, mussels attached to all grain sizes available, with attachment driven by grain availability, rather than active selection of particular grain sizes. In the ex situ flume experiment, densities of 135 mussels m−2 did not significantly increase the critical shear stress of fluvial bed materials, but a density of 270 mussels m−2 significantly increased critical shear stress by 40%. Estimates of the proportion of time these critical stresses are exceeded at the field site indicated high densities of quagga mussels may reduce the occurrence of a geomorphically active flood event from Q30 to Q2. These results present feasible invasion scenarios, as quagga mussels frequently reach benthic densities orders of magnitude greater than observed here. This study indicates that substantial alterations to bedload sediment transport may occur following quagga mussel invasion. Future geomorphic modelling should include biology to better understand rates and processes of landscape development.

    • Holocene rockwall retreat rates quantify integral values of rock slope erosion and talus cone evolution. Here we investigate Holocene rockwall retreat of exposed arctic sandstone cliffs in Longyeardalen, central Svalbard and apply laboratory-calibrated electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) to determine talus sediment thickness. Temperatureresistivity functions of two sandstone samples are measured in the laboratory and compared with borehole temperatures from the talus slope. The resistivity of the higher and lower-porosity sandstone at relevant borehole permafrost temperatures defines a threshold range that accounts for the lithological variability of the dominant bedrock and debris material. This helps to estimate the depth of the transition from higher resistivities of ice-rich debris to lower resistivities of frozen bedrock in the six ERT transects. The depth of the debrisbedrock transition in ERT profiles is confirmed by a pronounced apparent resistivity gradient in the raw data plotted versus depth of investigation. High-resolution LiDAR-scanning and ERT subsurface information were collated in a GIS to interpolate the bedrock surface and to calculate the sediment volume of the talus cones. The resulting volumes were referenced to source areas to calculate rockwall retreat rates. The rock mass strength was estimated for the source areas. The integral rockwall retreat rates range from 0.33 to 1.96 mm yr(1), and are among the highest rockwall retreat rates measured in arctic environments, presumably modulated by harsh environmental forcing on a porous sandstone rock cliff with a comparatively low rock mass strength. Here, we show the potential of laboratory-calibrated ERT to provide accurate estimates of rockwall retreat rates even in ice-rich permafrost talus slopes.

  • Age, formation and significance of loess deposits in central Sweden

    • Loess deposits are common in the mid-latitudes and are excellent records of past climate, landscape change and dust. However, loess deposits are seldom reported from Fennoscandia. Here we investigate two former glaciofluvial areas in central Sweden, Brattforsheden and Bonäsheden, where post-glacial loess and sand dune activity have been documented previously. Based on detailed mapping, grain size, scanning electron microscopy and optically stimulated luminescence dating analyses, we confirm the presence of loess deposits at the sites and extend the known area of loess coverage. Our results suggest that loess deposits are more common than previously thought in Sweden. The results also demonstrate that basal parts of the loess are often mixed with underlying sediment, which may be a common feature of thin loess deposits close to former ice margins. Quartz luminescence is well suited for dating these deposits, but ages from the mixed basal loess layers are older than expected, while ages from undisturbed loess extend to c. 5 ka. The loess ages contrast with the timing of main dune activity in these areas, which is dominantly in the 1–3 kyr post-deglaciation (c. 10.9–10.5 cal kyr BP). We suggest that either sediment mixing during soil formation is responsible for the mid-Holocene loess ages, or that the loess deposits record periodic landscape destabilization into the mid-Holocene. Furthermore, there is a clear topographic control on aeolian sedimentary facies, with loess mantling high ground and dunes restricted to valleys. Loess deposits are also primarily found to the south and southwest of source areas, implying transport from the north and east. This pattern contrasts with evidence for NW winds inferred from associated sand dunes. At present, the reasons for this mismatch are unclear, although one possible explanation is that silts deposited at higher elevations were affected by Ekman flow deflection of NW surface winds.

    • In this paper a modelling approach is presented to predict local scour under time varying flow conditions. The approach is validated using experimental data of unsteady scour at bed sills. The model is based on a number of hypotheses concerning the characteristics of the flow hydrograph, the temporal evolution of the scour and the geometry of the scour hole. A key assumption is that, at any time, the scour depth evolves at the same rate as in an equivalent steady flow. The assumption is supported by existing evidence of geometrical affinity and similarity of scour holes formed under different steady hydraulic conditions. Experimental data are presented that show the scour hole development downstream of bed sills due to flood hydrographs follow a predictable pattern. Numerical simulations are performed with the same input parameters used in the experimental tests but with no post-simulation calibration. Comparison between the experimental and model results indicates good correspondence, especially in the rising limb of the flow hydrograph. This suggests that the underlying assumptions used in the modelling approach are appropriate. In principle, the approach is general and can be applied to a wide range of environments (e.g. bed sills, step-pool systems) in which scouring at rapid bed elevation changes caused by time varying flows occurs, provided appropriate scaling information is available, and the scour response to steady flow conditions can be estimated.

    • Coastal aeolian sediment transport is influenced by supply-limiting factors caused by sediment sorting by grain size. Sorting processes can lead to coarsening of the bed surface and influence the formation of aeolian ripples. However, the influence sorting processes and bedforms might have on the magnitude of the transport is not fully understood. This study explores sorting processes and their influence on the magnitude and mode of aeolian transport by using sediment tracers. Sand was painted in different colors according to particle size and placed on a supratidal beach in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. Several experiments were conducted with varying wind speeds. Surface sampling and cameras tracked the sand color movement on the bed surface, and wind velocity was measured. The tracer experiments showed that ripples developed in moderate wind conditions. Once the ripples had formed, the supply of finer tracer grains in the downwind direction decreased over time, while the supply of coarser grains remained constant. A linear relationship between ripple migration speed and wind speed was found. For higher wind speeds, no ripples or differences in transport of grain size fractions were observed. Instead, alternating phases of erosion and deposition of the bed surface were observed, which could not be related to local variations in wind velocity. Based on these results and literature, a conceptual model was developed for an active bed surface layer with two transport regimes corresponding to moderate (I) and high (II) wind speeds. The conceptual model is intended to guide the selection of aeolian sediment transport models as a function of wind speed, bed characteristics, and upwind sediment supply. For Regime I, transport could be modeled using a linear relationship between sediment transport and wind speed and for Regime II using a third power relationship in combination with a process-based model accounting for supply limitations.

    • Ice sheet interiors are conventionally regarded as non-erosive. Yet subglacial conditions may be transformed during deglaciation by the arrival of large volumes of meltwater at the ice sheet bed. The development of a dynamic meltwater drainage system and the onset of basal sliding have potential to increase erosion rates in bedrock and sediment. Here, we examine the impact of late deglacial thawing on the Rogen plateau, located near the former ice divide of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet. We provide new maps of glacial and glacifluvial landforms which we combine with existing data on Quaternary sediments and landforms. Cross-cutting and overlapping relations allow for an event sequence to be established of the deglaciation period. In the Early Holocene (< 11 ka), an ice lobe onset zone developed at the Rogen plateau. In places where meltwater reached the bed and where pressures rose to overpressure, it caused fracture dilation in horizontally bedded sandstones and rock brecciation. The onset of sliding and application of drag resulted in the mobilization of bedrock sheets. The establishment of meltwater corridors led to fluidization of sediments at the bed, dissection and modification of ribbed moraines and formation of murtoos and hummock corridors. During final stagnation of the ice sheet, meltwater drained through channels forming axial eskers. Bedrock erosion during deglaciation reached depths up to 4 m, and in conjunction with some recycling of till, generated  ~317 km2 of boulder cover. The average erosion depths by removal and reworking of sediment are ~0.9–1.1 m across areas below 900 m elevation. This study shows that when the cold-based interiors of ice sheets become briefly activated by large subglacial meltwater delivery late in deglaciation, there can be significant reworking and erosion of rock and sediment.

    • In sandy beach systems, the aeolian sediment transport can be governed by the vertical structure of the sediment layers at the bed surface. Here, data collected with a newly developed sand scraper is presented to determine high-resolution vertical grain size variability and how it is affected by marine and aeolian processes. Sediment samples at up to 2 mm vertical resolution down to 50 mm depth were collected at three beaches: Waldport (Oregon, USA), Noordwijk (the Netherlands) and Duck (North Carolina, USA). The results revealed that the grain size in individual layers can differ considerably from the median grain size of the total sample. The most distinct temporal variability occurred due to marine processes that resulted in significant morphological changes in the intertidal zone. The marine processes during high water resulted both in fining and coarsening of the surface sediment. Especially near the upper limit of wave runup, the formation of a veneer of coarse sediment was observed. Although the expected coarsening of the near-surface grain size during aeolian transport events was observed at times, the opposite trend also occurred. The latter could be explained by the formation and propagation of aeolian bedforms within the intertidal zone locally resulting in sediment fining at the bed surface. The presented data lays the basis for future sediment sampling strategies and sediment transport models that investigate the feedbacks between marine and aeolian transport, and the vertical variability of the grain size distribution.

    • Grain size assessments are necessary for understanding the various geomorphological, hydrological and ecological processes that occur within rivers. Recent research has shown that the application of Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry to imagery from uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) shows promise for rapidly characterising grain sizes along rivers in comparison to traditional field-based methods. Here, we evaluated the applicability of different methods for estimating grain sizes in gravel bars along a study reach in the Olentangy River in Columbus, Ohio. We collected imagery of these gravel bars with a UAV and processed those images with SfM photogrammetry software to produce three-dimensional point clouds and orthomosaics. Our evaluation compared statistical models calibrated on topographic roughness, which was computed from the point clouds, and to those based on image texture, which was computed from the orthomosaics. Our results showed that statistical models calibrated on image texture were more accurate than those based on topographic roughness. This might be because of site-specific patterns of grain size, shape and imbrication. Such patterns would have complicated the detection of topographic signatures associated with individual grains. Our work illustrates that UAV-SfM approaches show potential to be used as an accessible method for characterising surface grain sizes along rivers at higher spatial and temporal resolutions than those provided by traditional methods.

    • Bonäsheden, Sweden's largest continuous dune field, situated in the county of Dalarna, central Sweden, has been investigated using LiDAR (light detection and ranging) remote sensing, ground penetrating radar as well as by field observations and luminescence dating. The use of LiDAR in conjunction with geographic information system (GIS) software proved to be efficient in mapping the inactive dune field and classifying the dune morphology, especially when slope raster images were used. The dunes have formed mostly by winds from the northwest (NW) and are of a transverse type. Still other dune types, such as parabolic dunes, and transverse dunes with a deviating orientation are present. Also, there seems to be different generations of dunes, suggesting a complex palaeowind environment with a change from predominantly north-westerly winds to more westerly winds. Luminescence dating finally allows us to have an absolute chronology of the development of the Bonäsheden dune field, revealing formation of the dune field closely following the de-glaciation of this part of Sweden (c. 10.5ka). The well preserved transverse shape of the majority of the dunes suggests rapid stabilization by vegetation, although sand drift still seems to have been active on a noticeable scale for at least 1500years and also, occasionally and patchy, as coversand deposition during the Late Holocene. A simple model is proposed for the dune field development of Bonäsheden based on our findings. This model is a useful addition since the majority of present day dune field models focus on the formation of parabolic dunes or large unvegetated dune fields. Our results suggest that most models cannot adequately simulate the formation of such small dune fields as that of Bonäsheden, with apparently rapidly fixated transverse dunes in a previously glaciated, now vegetated area.

    • Granite landforms in Sierra Nevada, California, and the southern part of Sweden were used to test whether a Schmidt hammer can be used to distinguish surfaces of different age and origin. Based on 3260 readings, statistically significant differences were obtained from surfaces formed and/or affected by different geomorphological processes. Aeolian, fluvial or glacially polished surfaces yield higher values than surfaces exposed to surface weathering, which are distinguishable from surfaces at a weathering front caused by deep weathering.
