  • Your purpose or mine? : Perspectives on data in innovation ecosystems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 91:3-4, s. 219-238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovation in ecosystems becomes increasingly attractive for incumbents as the technical complexity increases and complementarities play an increasingly important role for global competition. Digital platforms are becoming one of the primary means to that end, where incumbents can gain scale effects and reap the benefits of the creative crowd while maintaining ownership of the core product. But a lion’s share of these platforms hinges on the accessibility of data, and the view of the value of this data differs among actors in the system. This paper accounts for a case study of two type actors in an innovation ecosystem: the core actor (OEM) and the peripheral actor (third party service provider). From interviews with representatives of these actors, we find that their perspectives on the data and its usefulness outside its intended context differ. We label the perspectives purposive and multi-contextual; we formulate their descriptions and outline managerial implications. We argue that these differing perspectives are at the crux of establishing innovation capabilities in ecosystems based on digital platforms.

  • Is technology neutral for MSEs? Interdependencies, information transparency and power imbalances in e-commerce ecosystems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 91:3-4, s. 190-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the evident upsurge of e-commerce (EC) over the past decades, the peak of online demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the huge involvement of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in the online businesses to survive, the extant literature has neglected to analyse how MSEs orchestrate their resources between internal and external investments. Past studies, also in the case of SMEs, have tended to adopt a more firm-centric perspective focusing on the organisational conditions that determine firms’ performance after the usage of EC, failing to explore the inter-organisational relations between MSEs and other actors in their ecosystem. Indeed, as MSEs may suffer from liability of smallness and lack of resources, they may rely more than other actors on the nexus of relations that emerge within the digital ecosystem generated through the usage of EC platforms. By relying on 37 interviews with owners or managers of MSEs operating in the food and beverage industry, we investigate the dynamics of resource distribution between MSEs and the other actors in the EC ecosystem. We identified the changes in interdependencies, the information asymmetries, and the power imbalances related to the interplay between MSEs and other actors within the EC ecosystem.

  • Exploiting supplier innovativeness through knowledge integration
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 61:3-4, s. 237-253
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Firms are increasingly involving and relying on networks of suppliers and other external partners in their innovation processes. A successful exploitation of suppliers' technology and competencies is however challenging, not least in situations characterised by technological uncertainty. The main purpose of this study is to analyse how supplier innovativeness may be leveraged through internal knowledge integration capabilities in involving suppliers. The analysis is based on a survey of firms in Europe and North America. The study shows that innovative suppliers do contribute to a firm's innovation performance in terms of time–to–market and level of innovation in products/services. The main result is that an internal knowledge integration capability in terms of proficiency in supplier management and cross–functional decision making boosts innovation performance, in particular when technological uncertainty is high.

  • Outsourcing manufacturing and its effect on engineering firm performance
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 44:3-4, s. 373-390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the proclaimed advantages and popularity of outsourcing, there are few and contradictory studies of the effects. The main purpose of this paper is to analyse how outsourcing manufacturing relates to performance and innovation at the plant level. A second purpose is to analyse how this outcome relates to investments in manufacturing capability. This paper is based on the results of a large-scale survey of outsourcing and manufacturing practices among a representative sample of Swedish engineering firms. The results show mainly no significant effects from outsourcing manufacturing on plant operating performance or innovation capability. This paper, however, reveals that the firms' investments in technological and organisational capabilities explain the improvements of performance at the plant level to a significantly higher extent than outsourcing does. This paper concludes with a suggestion to further analyse the potential of combined outsourcing and manufacturing strategies.

  • A New Perspective on the Innovators Dilemma Exploring the role of Entrepreneurial Incentives
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 75:1-4, s. 142-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Why do entrant firms sometimes gain the upper hand under conditions of discontinuous technological change? Previous research on this topic has either looked at the role of established competencies and/or firm incentives to invest in a new technology. In this paper we explore an alternative explanation. Drawing upon evidence from the ongoing transition from CCTV to digital, IP based video surveillance, we argue that entrant firms may be more prone to act entrepreneurially, i.e. more inclined to proactively create or transform markets and build ecosystems. As new technologies frequently require altered behaviour among customers and stakeholders, this capability is sometimes critical in order to succeed in a technological transition. Our contribution therefore lies in pointing out that not only may incentives to allocate R&D resources differ among entrants and incumbents, firms might also have different incentives to engage in entrepreneurial activities of creating or transforming markets.

  • Motivations of academics to interact with industry : The case of nanoscience
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 68:3-4, s. 159-175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With a special focus on the field of nanotechnology, this paper investigates motivations of academic scientists to interact with industry. The study is based on a survey of 181 nanoscientists from various disciplines and universities in Turkey. We identified three main motivations for interacting with industry: 1) to increase resources for academic research; 2) to learn from firms; 3) to commercialise research results. We found that in nanotechnology, commercialisation of research outcomes is an important motivation. In general, the importance of motivations differs according to the forms of engagement. Consulting is motivated by commercialisation while research-based interactions are driven by aims to commercialise or to learn from firms. Finding new financial resources for academic research is a strong impetus for informal interactions.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 76:1-2, s. 81-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we examine the role of firms' absorptive capacity in industry-university collaboration and, in particular, whether absorptive capacity moderates the effects of university collaboration on firms' innovativeness. Having defined absorptive capacity as the recognition, assimilation and application of valuable external knowledge for commercial purposes, we formulated three hypotheses pertaining to firm innovativeness and tested them in an original survey comprising a representative multi-industry sample of 1,532 Swedish firms. The results suggest that benefiting from university cooperation is conditional upon the firm's level of absorptive capacity. At low levels of absorptive capacity, engaging with universities does not translate into any noticeable increase in innovative output. In contrast, medium to high levels of absorptive capacity is where a firm benefit most from collaborating with a university. We also show that these effects are more pronounced for firms operating in sectors characterised by lower levels of technology and knowledge intensity.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 37:3-4, s. 272-289
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports findings from the Swedish part of the 2nd International Continuous Improvement Survey. Based on Bessant's evolutionary model of continuous improvement behaviour, the continuous improvement capability level of the Swedish engineering industry is estimated. The data analysis shows that there is a need for progression towards higher continuous improvement capability levels. Therefore, the specific abilities to develop in order to support such a move forward are clarified. In addition to being an illustration of manufacturing practices in Sweden from a continuous improvement perspective, this article contributes to the field of Operations Management by being the first attempt to replicate the work of Bessant via a large-scale survey study. The model is found valid and it shows that development of continuous improvement abilities contribute to the enhancement of plant performance.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 50:1, s. 1-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a widespread acceptance that organising by projects is on the increase. In previous research on the management of projects, the majority of studies have adopted project-centric approaches, downplaying organisation- or company-wide matters even in firms whose performance largely depends on the combined success of multiple projects. In this paper, we focus on the problem of management control and specifically the control modes and control mechanisms used by management in project-intensive Randamp;D units. On the basis of a multiple case study of four Randamp;D units, we suggest a typology of four different kinds of multi-project situations. The typology is based on two dimensions, dependency between projects and project uncertainty. The typology is used to explain differences in management control modes and mechanisms between the firms in our study.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 72:4, s. 273-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The open innovation paradigm has created opportunities for the emergence of new actors to provide support for open innovation. It is acknowledged that knowledge creation is pivotal to innovation, but this has yet to be discussed in the context of open innovation intermediation. This paper based on a longitudinal study of SAFER, a traffic and vehicle safety research centre in Sweden, explores the role of an actor whose objective is to support joint knowledge creation in open innovation. Theoretical models of knowledge creation are used in the analysis and the identified activities go beyond intermediation, and include peer collaboration and mobilisation of a collective strategic body. These activities are fundamental to an open innovation arena - here introduced as a new type of actor. The paper challenges the established focal firm perspective in open innovation and introduces the open innovation arena to underline knowledge creation among peers.

  • 1993
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 7:4/5, s. 302 - 313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The most socio-technically advanced assembly system designs inventible requires reformed/reconfigured information systems dealing with product data (which in turn defines the product architecture and product variation). In fact, no any such (real-life) plant or assembly system would work as anticipated otherwise. And this publication is to some extent describing some selected aspects of this (very) dilemma (changing information systems are usually not something considered than designing assembly systems) (thus are totally new plants – and in turn totally new information systems – most often the real practical change to create something unorthodox) (however, which scientist will gain such opportunities, this is really rare, i.e. the projection of the Volvo Uddevalla plant was thus an exception and the trust given by the industry – by Volvo Uddevalla project organisation – was appreciated by some of the authors).

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 91:3-4, s. 162-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to examine the implications of knowledge collaboration in open innovation and the role of digital technology therein. The paper draws on a survey of manufacturing firms from Italy, Sweden, France and Spain. The results show that knowledge collaboration with external partners has a significant effect on innovation novelty but not on innovation efficiency. In addition, the results show that digital technology moderates the relationship between knowledge collaboration and innovation efficiency but not the relationship between knowledge collaboration and innovation novelty. Overall, this study contributes to the growing discussion about the benefits of adopting digital technologies in open innovation processes by investigating whether and under which conditions knowledge collaboration is beneficial.

  • Multinational technology and intellectual property management - Is there global convergence and/or specialisation?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 64:2-4, s. 117-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper gives various indications of market and technology diversification as well as of global market and technology convergence (rather than specialization) in the context of managerial, legal and economic convergence. The results show that different countries focus on a wider but increasingly similar set of markets for R&D outputs in form of patents, which implies increasing intra-national market diversification and inter-national market convergence. The results also show that different countries focus on a wider but increasingly similar set of technologies that are patented, which implies increasing intra-national technology diversification and inter-national technology convergence. In addition, intellectual property (IP) legal convergence takes place as newly industrialized countries (NICs) have strengthened their IP regimes in compliance with TRIPS and subsequently do so in the context of their indigenous innovation policies. Asian NICs have significantly increased their international patenting and supply of patented inventions. Altogether, this puts new demands across countries on multinational technology and innovation management skills, and in particular multinational IP management skills.

  • Energy systems in transition: perspectives for the diffusion of small-scale wood pellet heating technology
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 29:3/4, s. 327-347
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In response to environmental and supply security concerns associated with fossil fuels, promising small-scale wood heating systems with sizable market potentials have started to penetrate the residential heating market in Europe and elsewhere. Despite significant technological progress that led to cost reduction, increased levels of convenience, improved reliability and reduced environmental impact, the widespread diffusion of such systems will nonetheless take many years or even decades. Framework and market conditions, and especially drivers and barriers and the overall merits of such systems in comparison to alternative solutions, need to be properly understood by policy-makers and entrepreneurs for the successful promotion of these technologies. In this article we cover three important aspects related to small-scale wood pellet heating systems. First, we summarise recent technological, socio-economic and institutional trends. Second, results from a comparative analysis of the direct and indirect external costs and benefits of these technologies versus other heating technologies are reported. Third, the usefulness of various diffusion modelling approaches used in economics is discussed in the light of the technology scrutinised and existing data constraints.

  • An evolutionary perspective on convergence : inducing a stage model of inter-industry innovation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 49:1-3, s. 220-249
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Throughout the past decade, the phenomenon of technological convergence has increasingly gained managerial attention. In particular, the phenomenon can be regarded as a special form of technological change, where the coming-together of previously distinct knowledge bases gives rise to the creation of new applications and business models. Since the resulting creative destruction may exceed previously established industry boundaries, as a consequence, convergence does not only promise the creation of new value, but may imply significant disruptions to established industries. Driven by a managerial need for understanding convergence from an innovation management perspective, as well as by contradictive perceptions in previous research, this paper introduces an evolutionary perspective on the phenomenon. The study is based on an inductive and embedded multiple-case approach, involving 26 firms in the information and communications industry sectors. Four different stages of a convergence process are identified, described and formalised: (1) knowledge convergence, (2) technological convergence, (3) applicational convergence and (4) industrial convergence.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 45:3-4, s. 244-266
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A changing industrial and technological environment implies a need for a diligent acquisition of dynamic capabilities. While tackling exogenous discontinuities is imperative for success, the problem often lies in the firms' internal processes, where existing core competences might deteriorate to core rigidities. The presented contribution is two-fold: first, a conceptual framework for assessing knowledge-related rigidities along the innovation process is introduced, which is derived from the stage-gate model for new product development. The innovation process is evaluated within cases of four industry firms, with emphasis on identifying problem areas, core rigidities and resulting challenges along the entire way from idea to market launch. Secondly, the challenges are clustered, providing a basis for deriving optimisation approaches, as well as summarised and compared across the cases. In all phases of the innovation process, the benchmark with other firms seems to ease the process of creating awareness on rigidities and to provide a basis for managerial improvement.

  • Applying lean in product development - enabler or inhibitor of creativity?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 68:1-2, s. 49-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lean has become increasingly popular as a process management approach outside its original application in manufacturing, and it is frequently used as a means to increase efficiency in research and development (R&D) processes. Previous research suggests that lean can be used to increase R&D efficiency, but there is disagreement on whether or not this comes at the expense of creativity. In this article, the effects of lean product development on creativity are studied by means of case studies in the R&D departments of five companies. The empirical observations highlighted a number of important aspects when applying lean in product development. The data suggested that a primary focus of lean in product development was flow, rather than waste reduction, and that significant focus was given to the reduction of disturbances. Another finding was the need for a long-term perspective in R&D to safeguard creativity and that the reduction of slack time following the implementation of lean clearly limited the opportunities to undertake unsanctioned innovation projects, often referred to as 'skunk work'. Finally, the importance of management support and employee training to aid the implementation of lean was emphasised.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : INDERSCIENCE ENTERPRISES LTD. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 48:2, s. 140-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers the implications of the growing trend for Engineer-To-Order (ETO) companies to engage in projects that involve not just the design and manufacture of capital plant and equipment, but also responsibility for downstream aspects of the project such as operations, maintenance and service delivery. These types of long-term, service-focused projects introduce an added dimension of complexity to the project that stems from a proliferation of stakeholders and multiple customers within the project. Drawing on three detailed case studies of projects with a long-term, service focus, this paper explores the problems facing ETO companies and their project managers in terms of identifying who the critical customer is at any particular stage of the project and highlights some implications for the management of the design and innovation process in such ETO projects.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 93:3-4, s. 194-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the automotive domain, as an example of cyber-physical systems, continuous software deployment is actively explored to deliver increasingly capable features to existing fleets of vehicles. The distributed nature of software coupled with tight hardware integration and potentially tremendous variability between vehicles make ensuring compatibility of updated software a significant challenge - both technically and managerially. While the automotive industry commonly forms larger multi-brand organisations to utilise economies of scale, processes for continuous deployment contradictory assumes a single organisation with full control. This paper sets out to shed light on challenges of adopting continuous deployment in the context of such a multi-brand cyber-physical systems organisation. Following a case study, the paper describes a tension between the managerial perspective concerned with platform strategies, and the engineering perspective responsible for developing products from those platforms. The paper highlights software dependencies as a barrier to continuous innovation of cyber-physical systems in multi-brand organisations.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 80:1-2, s. 36-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines managerial attention alteration in an integrated product-service development project. A case study was conducted to shed light on the issue of developing integrated offerings in a product-oriented organisation. It is shown that attention given to product-related aspects will suppress service-related aspects. Since structures and channels benefit a product-orientation, service-related issues that use the same channels tend to be undermined. It is suggested that attention to both aspects would be enabled by a focus on the overall integrated offering rather than on the individual components competing for attention. However, an integrated project faces challenges in maintaining such a focus due to organisational structures that separate product- and service-related issues into separate channels.

Since structures and channels benefit a product-orientation, service-related issues that use the same channels tend to be undermined. It is suggested that attention to both aspects would be enabled by a focus on the overall integrated offering rather than on the individual components competing for attention. However, an integrated project faces challenges in maintaining such a focus due to organisational structures that separate product-and service-related issues into separate channels.

    • This paper summarizes some of the literature on the links between foreign direct investment (FDI) and the transfer and diffusion of technology. It is argued that the positive effects of FDI postulated in much of the recent debate are not automatic, that the effects of FDI will vary depending on the host country's characteristics and policies, and that there is a role for economic policy in maximizing the potential benefits of FDI.

    • This paper explores the role of the two dimensions of ambidextrous strategic management (exploration and exploitation) on technology-oriented ventures' innovation and company level performance. Based on a representative sample of German venture capital backed technology start-ups from various innovative industries, we are able to provide support for the oft-stated assumption that the ambidexterity strategy positively influences performance. Results indicate that both explorative and exploitative activity add to the overall success of innovation projects, which consequently influence overall firm performance positively. Moreover, our data suggest that for technology-oriented ventures, the timing of the second innovation project after start-up, i.e., the point in time when ventures become potentially ambidextrous, plays a decisive role

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 31:3-4, s. 334-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is in the field of new technology-based firms and the role of Science Parks. The assessing of academic knowledge and expertise by businesses located on site is a key principle of Science Parks. Science Parks provide an important resource network for new technology-based firms (NTBFs). The independent new technology-based Science Park firms are analysed regarding their origin. The research proposition is empirically tested on the basis of 134 new technology-based firms in Sweden, NTBFs (University spin-offs; USOs) from the academy (74 firms) and NTBFs (Corporate spin-offs; CSOs) from the private sector (60 firms). These two categories of firms are assumed to need and acquire different types of resourses due to their different background. The importance of Science Parks for the decision to start the firm: 66.7 percent (USOs) and 52.9 percent (CSOs). They would never have been established without the Science Park. The two groups tended to exhibit differences between advice from managers in the parks (USOs). The study indicates that there is a direct relationship between Science Park importance for attracting external capital and financing issues (USOs). There is also some evidence that professional businesses benefit from a Science Park location. The general levels of advice (Advice related to park: Banking institutions and Chamber of Commerce) by those CSOs located on a Science Park was considerably high.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  This study examines which factors motivate small enterprises to realise product innovations and how these factors affect their innovation processes. In a multiple embedded case study of three small enterprises, 11 different innovation processes, both realised and unrealised, were discovered and analysed. Strategy, competition, profit, growth, source of innovation idea, innovation process size and novelty were not found to explain the motivation to innovate, but ten interdependent motivating factors did, of which four externally oriented factors were found conclusive for innovation to occur. The factors found, dealing with resource scarcity, technology and market uncertainty and risk, and cash flow, highly affected how the innovation processes were carried out. The findings further show that the need to maintain steady cash flow seems to be the overall motive for product innovation in small enterprises.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 42:1-2, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today's business environment poses a significant challenge to many firms, namely to continuously innovate, combining operational excellence with both steady-state and discontinuous innovation. At a closer look, it can also be seen that a number of leading firms today seem to be able to handle the resulting situation quite well, revealing good operational and innovation performance over time. At the same time, the bulk of management theory still approaches this problem with a trade-off perspective, implying that these aspects of business are analysed separately, and that efficiency and innovation have to be regarded as mutually excluding things to strive for - suggesting that firms can be good in one of the two abilities but not in both simultaneously. This points to a gap in existing research that scholars need to fill. Building on management literature about paradoxes and dualities, and using some examples from practice, this contribution stresses the 'practicability' of the duality perspective for Continuous Innovation research and practice.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 44:3-4, s. 324-337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A common approach in continuous improvement programmes in manufacturing firms is that the bulk of the improvement activities is performed by small groups of shop-floor operators. The performance of these groups consequently is of great importance for the overall success of continuous improvement initiatives. Earlier research has among other things pointed out the importance of motivation, communication and leadership support for the work of these groups. However, there is still a lack of empirical studies of these factors in terms of their relative impact on performance and their inter-relationships. This paper addresses these issues based on an investigation of small improvement groups at three SKF factories in Sweden. Based on a combination of participatory studies, interviews and a survey to the leaders of the improvement groups, it was found that a key problem for improvement activities is motivation and teamwork, and that what characterises high-performing groups is their information-sharing and communication behaviours. This study also showed that other important factors to consider for this type of improvement work are goal-setting and feedback, as well as management support, both in terms of direct leadership in the improvement groups and in terms of support from other management levels, leading to a number of managerial implications.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 71:3-4, s. 212-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Routines allow organisations to perform basic functional activities and to continuously adapt through innovation. To understand how the search for new knowledge occurs, this paper explores how knowledge is integrated in search routines for innovation, and how search routines differ between contexts. Becker's (2005) general model, based on the notions of antecedents and routine characteristics, is adapted to develop a framework for analysing search routines for innovation. The framework is then applied in two case studies of healthcare clinics employing iterative and sequential modes of healthcare, respectively. The cases illustrate how the context affects the form of the search routine. The study demonstrates the viability of empirically investigating routines using a coherent framework, to understand how contextual factors affect routines at the operational level.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 60:3-4, s. 157-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whereas there is a wealth of contributions on the topic of continuous innovation (CI) in firms, there is still a clear need for works addressing how the existing knowledge on combining various types of innovation with operational excellence and strategic flexibility in a fruitful manner. Any attempt to generate actionable knowledge about CI that at the same time lives up to the traditional academic requirements of rigor and relevance poses significant challenges to researchers, calling for a more comprehensive and multi-faceted methodological approach, attending to multiple evaluation criteria and possible revisions of research roles and processes. This paper aims to recommend how to produce CI actionable knowledge and to take the first steps in progressing from this form of knowledge to a universal theory of CI. In doing so, the paper calls for a 'continuous innovation' in the way CI research is accomplished, and aims at proposing some key building blocks and evaluation criteria of a basic framework able to overcome the pre-paradigmatic stage in which CI research seems to be stuck. Moreover, it presents four papers from the International CINet Conference held in 2007 Goteborg (SE) and one from the 2010 Zurich.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 24:5-6, s. 498-513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is ideas that act as initiators of new product development projects. In the literature, ideas for the development of new products are found to originate from different sources both external and internal to an organisation. For example, formalised product development processes use customer surveys and technology development in order to find ideas for new products while integration with a lot of other idea sources is less evident. Some organisations have identified this weakness and created arenas where ideas can be discussed and exchanged between individuals. One example of an arena is idea management systems, which are formal ways of capturing, examining, nurturing, storing and developing ideas created in an organisation. In this paper, the role of idea management systems in three multinational Swedish organisations is studied. The findings suggest that idea management systems can be used to introduce and strengthen the innovation capability of an organisation.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 56:2-4, s. 256-271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Product platforms are applied in order to increase the stability of the product architecture and to reap benefits of scale and scope. However, many firms face a dynamic environment with quickly changing market demands. In such an environment, firms may have to continuously renew and improve their product platforms to achieve desired flexibility. The modifications comprise two types of innovations, component as well as architectural innovations. Combining these types to simultaneously achieve stability and strategic flexibility demands continuous innovation capability. This paper provides a viable approach to coordinate architectural and component innovations. The paper is based on a case study of an international truck manufacturer. Two major issues, decision-making and the management of knowledge, stand out as important for realising continuous innovation and improvement of product platforms. Moreover, product platform management needs to consider modularity and its related economies of substitution.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 61:3/4, s. 309-323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores and explains the emergence of commercial blogging. Studying the contents of 18 of Sweden's top fashion blogs, our findings suggest that bloggers create value by generating improved transaction efficiencies. Fashion bloggers have high credibility and thus facilitate the flow of consumer information and choice. The blogs present a combination of private and commercial content, thereby creating a customer intimacy that differentiates them from more traditional market channels. The value of these relationships is appropriated partly through advertisements and partly from other sources of revenue, such as the creation of brands and online stores. Bloggers have become powerful intermediaries who often have a better contact with end consumers than fashion firms. This paper therefore suggests that management of the blogosphere is an emerging source of competitive advantage for fashion firms.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 57:4, s. 266-288
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses Toyota's, Honda's and Nissan's efforts in battery, hybrid, and fuel cell electric vehicles (BEVs, HEVs and FCVs). Its aim is to increase understanding of the process constituting a paradigmatic shift in technology. In particular, the paper aims to elucidate how automakers managed their early moves. Based on interviews, patent data and previous literature, key aspects relating to the automakers successful early moves into vehicle electrification (as seen in 2010) are outlined. Toyota's (and Honda's) aim of in-house knowledge development in the new technologies is among the aspects emphasised as distinctive compared to other world automakers. Furthermore, spill-over in terms of branding and sales and a deliberate development of the corporate culture are proposed as potential new first-mover objectives and consequences. Finally, this paper argues that Toyota, Honda and Nissan are capable of not only incremental but also more-than-incremental innovations, as illustrated by their position in the electrification race.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 56:2-4, s. 225-240
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development and installation of new process equipment in production plants typically requires strong collaboration among a process firm and various equipment suppliers. While incentives to collaborate often are strong, close collaboration also poses significant problems, throughout the lifecycle of process equipment. The purpose of this article is to explore the problems and opportunities faced by process firms and their equipment suppliers throughout the lifecycle stages of collaborative development projects. This paper combines literature on open innovation, collaborative development and buyer-supplier relationships. Empirically, we draw on a large number of interviews in a dual case study of two process firms. Our results show that strong collaboration is neither positive nor negative in general. Rather, opportunities, problems, and collaboration intensity are strongly contingent on the specific stage in the lifecycle of process equipment. Our findings underscore the managerial and theoretical importance of a lifecycle perspective on the development of process equipment, since significant overlaps and interconnections exist across different stages.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 56:2-4, s. 109-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature on disruptive technologies has previously stated that those innovations often emerge in low-end segments or in new markets and as the performance improves it eventually displaces the old technology. This article aims to explain how and why a technology may prosper in high-end or mainstream markets despite its initially lower performance and does so through three in-depth case studies. The findings suggest that those technologies may compensate the inferior performance by simplifying and removing work for customers. For instance, digital imaging emerged in high-end segments since these customers were willing to trade-off the initially lower image quality in order to remove the usage of film. Based upon these results, the paper concludes that the literature on disruptive technologies needs to maintain a more nuanced view of value and how it is created and distributed inside the customer's organisation.

    • Diversified but complimentary approaches analysing complex systems of innovation promise a more general framework of relevant theory that can explain similarities and differences of national innovation systems (NIS) among countries. We characterize this approach as a breakthrough for overcoming the restrictions of the prevailing Linear Approach and System Approach. The combination of these two approaches facilitates cross-country and cross-time comparisons of different systems of innovations. The new approach also contributes to understanding fine-tuning links between the national innovation system and the corporate innovation system.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 0267-5730 .- 1741-5276. ; 71:3-4, s. 232-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on the tense appropriability-openness relationship, defined by some as paradox. Based on an international survey of 415 manufacturing firms, we investigate how the use of different kinds of intellectual property protection mechanisms (IPPMs) affects interfirm R&D collaboration while considering partner location in the analysis as well. Our results show that the use of formal, semi-formal or informal IPPMs has different effects on openness in terms of partner variety and depth of collaboration with academic partners, value chain partners and competitors. Moreover, when considering location we uncover previously hidden appropriability-openness liaisons showing that semi-formal or informal IPPMs are mainly valid in relation to national partners, whereas formal appropriability explains international collaborations. One implication of the study is that to better understand the appropriability-openness relationship it is imperative to differentiate between national and international settings. We further suggest that the potential paradox delineating this relationship has a geographical dimension.
