  • Developing a Theory of the Firm for the 21st Century
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - : Academy of Management. - 1930-3807 .- 0363-7425. ; 45:4, s. 711-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Why do firms exist? The answer to this question has puzzled scholars since at least the 1930s. Given that the invisible hand of the market - with its emphasis on competition and prices - can efficiently co-ordinate among literally millions of people, why would it ever make sense to try to coordinate such exchanges through a firm - with its emphasis on bureaucracy, rules and managerial hierarchies? And yet, firms exist, and they can even prosper. As noted by D. H. Robertson (quoted in Coase 1937:388), firms in the economy exist as "islands of conscious power in [an] ocean of unconscious co-operation, like lumps of butter coagulating in a pall of buttermilk".

  • Beyond neopositivists, romantics, and localists: A reflexive approach to interviews in organizational research
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - 0363-7425. ; 28:1, s. 13-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I develop a framework for thinking about the research interview, and I critique dominating neopositivist and romantic views on the interview. I suggest eight metaphors that offer reconceptualizations of the interview, drawing upon recent theoretical trends on language, the subject, and discourse, and develop a reflexive theoretical framework. The article provides new ways of dealing. with interviews, along with implications for fieldwork interaction with subjects, interpretations of empirical material, and research questions possible or suitable to address based on interviews.

  • Constructing mystery: Empirical matters in theory development
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - 0363-7425. ; 32:4, s. 1265-1281
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We outline a research methodology developed around two basic elements: the active discovery and/or creation of mysteries and the subsequent solving of the mysteries. A key element is the reflexive opening up of established theory and vocabulary through a systematic search for deviations from what would be expected. given established wisdom, in empirical contexts. "Data" are seen as an inspiration for critical dialogues between theoretical frameworks and empirical work.

  • Generating research questions through problematization
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - 0363-7425. ; 36:2, s. 247-271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is increasingly recognized that what makes a theory interesting and influential is that it challenges our assumptions in some significant way. However, established ways for arriving at research questions mean spotting or constructing gaps in existing theories rather than challenging their assumptions. We propose problematization as a methodology for identifying and challenging assumptions underlying existing literature and, based on that, formulating research questions that are likely to lead to more influential theories.

  • Opportunities as Artifacts and Entrepreneurship as Design
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - : Academy of Management. - 0363-7425 .- 1930-3807. ; 45:4, s. 825-846
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We combine Herbert Simon’s view of design with the common distinction between reality as discovered or created to develop experimentation and transformation as ideal types of entrepreneurial design. Building on the design tradition’s view of artifacts, we describe how opportunities-as-artifacts iteratively develop at the interface between organized individuals and their environments, where more or less concrete instantiations are used to drive the process forward. By conceptualizing entrepreneurship as artifact-centered design, we provide an alternative to accounts inspired by economic theory, which have proven conceptually problematic and of limited practical use. We conclude by discussing how uncertainty can be defined and managed, the value of design as a conceptual anchor for entrepreneurship studies, opportunities for future research, and how entrepreneurship seen as design naturally bridges theory and practice.

  • Opportunities, Time, and Mechanisms in Entrepreneurship: On the Practical Irrelevance of Propensities
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - : Academy of Management. - 0363-7425 .- 1930-3807. ; 42:4, s. 731-734
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conclude by suggesting that entrepreneurship scholars pay attention to Ramoglou and Tsang’s critique of naïve positivism and their emphasis on mechanisms and causal explanations. However, we see no value in using critical realism as a meta-theoretical crutch to save the realness and independence of entrepreneurial opportunities, and more generally to conceive of entrepreneurial processes and outcomes as caused by complexly interacting and empirically unobservable entities and mechanisms. Instead, we urge scholars to consider explanations that focus on empirically tractable social mechanisms that connect social action and interaction with relevant outcomes in ways that take into account the open-endedness, uncertainty, and transformative character of entrepreneurship.

  • The nature and experience of entrepreneurial passion
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - : Academy of Management. - 0363-7425 .- 1930-3807. ; 34:3, s. 511-532
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Entrepreneurial passion plays an important role in entrepreneurship, but theoretical understanding of what it is and what it does is lacking. We build on fragmented and disparate extant work to conceptualize the nature of entrepreneurial passion associated with salient entrepreneurial role identities. We also theorize the mechanisms of the experience of entrepreneurial passion that provide coherence to goal-directed cognitions and behaviors during the pursuit of entrepreneurial effectiveness.

  • Luigi Pareyson’s Estetica : Teoria della formatività and Its Implications for Organization Studies
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - : Academy of Management. - 0363-7425 .- 1930-3807. ; 42:4, s. 745-755
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we illustrate some principal features of Pareyson’s philosophical aesthetics and their relevance within aesthetic organizational research and the study of social practice in organization. In his main work on aesthetics, Estetica: Teoria della formatività, written during the Fifties, the Italian philosopher proposes a personalistic existentialist hermeneutics and stresses the concreteness of the person in the social interaction with the concreteness of the Other and of the materiality of the world created and formed. Aesthetic philosophy as ‘formativeness’ focuses on flesh, incarnation, materiality of the interpreted world, doing while inventing how to do, and the practice of doing philosophy. In the essay, we underline the relationship between ‘formativeness’ and the valorization of aesthetics in the study of organizational practice that has led to the appreciation of the corporeality of personal knowledge in the process of knowing in practice. We argue that, if we want to appreciate Pareyson’s contribution to organization and management studies, we can see management as art, production processes as artistry, a work well done as a work of art, and of course art in itself. Our conclusion is that, while ‘philosophy’ constituted the link between Pareyson’s Formatività and the aesthetic discourse on organizational life, ‘practice’ constituted the link among ‘formativeness’, organizational aesthetics research and practice-based studies. Keywords aesthetic philosophy; formativeness; organizational aesthetics; Luigi Pareyson; Practice-based Studies

  • Cognitive Frames in Corporate Sustainability: Managerial Sensemaking with Paradoxical and Business Case Frames
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - : Academy of Management. - 0363-7425 .- 1930-3807. ; 39:4, s. 463-487
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Corporate sustainability confronts managers with tensions between complex economic, environmental, and social issues. Drawing on the literature on managerial cognition, corporate sustainability, and strategic paradoxes, we develop a cognitive framing perspective on corporate sustainability. We propose two cognitive frames—a business case frame and a paradoxical frame—and explore how differences between them in cognitive content and structure influence the three stages of the sensemaking process—that is, managerial scanning, interpreting, and responding with regard to sustainability issues. We explain how the two frames lead to differences in the breadth and depth of scanning, differences in issue interpretations in terms of sense of control and issue valence, and different types of responses that managers consider with regard to sustainability issues. By considering alternative cognitive frames, our argument contributes to a better understanding of managerial decision making regarding ambiguous sustainability issues, and it develops the underlying cognitive determinants of the stance that managers adopt on sustainability issues. This argument offers a cognitive explanation for why managers rarely push for radical change when faced with complex and ambiguous issues, such as sustainability, that are characterized by conflicting yet interrelated aspects.

  • Toward the Emergence of Entrepreneurial Opportunities : Organizing Early-phase New-venture Creation Support Systems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - : Academy of Management. - 0363-7425 .- 1930-3807. ; 47:1, s. 162-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Support systems for early venturing efforts need to be harmonious with the emergent nature of those efforts. With current literature treating the conceptions of new ventures as exogenous, there has been limited focus on the transition of venturing efforts from nebulous, open-ended, and accidental toward becoming scalable, focused, and deliberate. We develop a dynamic model for organizing support systems for the early phases of new-venture creation, where scattered ideas evolve into venture concepts as tokens, frames, and premises for further action. By viewing venturing efforts and opportunities as emergent and drawing on the literature on complexity and organizational space, we propose openness, self-selection, visibility, and connectivity as the defining characteristics for organizing support systems. In contrast to literature's predominant focus on a predictive, linear approach, we expand the theoretical scope of support systems to include organizing that is more attuned to the uncertain and nonlinear nature of new venture creation that they support. Our work has broader implications for organizing uncertain early-phase development processes.

  • The Impact of Organization Development
  • 1978
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - 0363-7425 .- 1930-3807. ; 3:2, s. 249-266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little systematic evidence exists on overall effects of Organization Development (OD). Thirty-five empirical studies assessing the impact of OD activities provide the basis for analysis. A typology, derived from research variables reported in the literature, is used to investigate both overall impact of OD and the differential impact of unique classes of interventions.

  • ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND MANAGEMENT: THE AUTOMATION-AUGMENTATION PARADOX
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - : Academy of Management. - 1930-3807 .- 0363-7425. ; 46:1, s. 192-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Taking three recent business books on artificial intelligence (AI) as a starting point, we explore the automation and augmentation concepts in the management domain. Whereas automation implies that machines take over a human task, augmentation means that humans collaborate closely with machines to perform a task. Taking a normative stance, the three books advise organizations to prioritize augmentation, which they relate to superior performance. Using a more comprehensive paradox theory perspective, we argue that, in the management domain, augmentation cannot be neatly separated from automation. These dual AI applications are interdependent across time and space, creating a paradoxical tension. Overemphasizing either augmentation or automation fuels reinforcing cycles with negative organizational and societal outcomes. However, if organizations adopt a broader perspective comprising both automation and augmentation, they could deal with the tension and achieve complementarities that benefit business and society. Drawing on our insights, we conclude that management scholars need to be involved in research on the use of AI in organizations. We also argue that a substantial change is required in how AI research is currently conducted in order to develop meaningful theory and to provide practice with sound advice.

  • Entrepreneuring as emancipation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Review. - 0363-7425 .- 1930-3807. ; 34:3, s. 477-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We define "entrepreneuring" as efforts to bring about new economic, social, institutional, and cultural environments through the actions of an individual or group of individuals. Thus, we view entrepreneuring as an emancipatory process with broad change potential. This view foregrounds three aspects of entrepreneuring that merit closer attention in future research-seeking autonomy, authoring, and making declarations. We highlight the novel directions for entrepreneurship research suggested by our emancipatory perspective and relate it to the special topic forum articles.
