- In this paper we relate bilingual lexicography and contrastive construction grammar via bilingual constructicography, addressing the treatment of constructional and phraseological information in bilingual lexicography. After a discussion of the different notions of equivalence in lexicography and constructicography, we compare two online resources: the Swedish constructicon and the Icelandic-Swedish part of Islex.se. It is shown that although Islex.se contains a wealth of constructional information, this does not readily carry over across languages. A creative user can find correlections between constructions in Icelandic and Swedish, but these connections are indirect and somewhat ad hoc. Explicit links between the two languages mainly concern lemmas. In an online resource, it is clearly possible to also include systematic comparisons of phraseological information, and we argue that making use of constructionist resources such as constructicons would be helpful in this regard.

- In this study, I investigate what a figurative sense is in the Swedish Academy Dictionary (SAOB). The description of figurative senses in the dictionary is analyzed in terms of word classes and the use of specific labels in the definitions, such as bildl. (figurative), is mapped out. From a cognitive semantic perspective, I investigate what the figurative uses of the present cases consist of, in a cognitive sense. What semantic process is at hand (metaphor, metonymy etc.)? And to what extent does a figurative sense imply polysemy? The study is a part of a licentiate project and the aim of this article is to present some preliminary results of that project.

- This paper describes the results of a study of the user-generated web dictionary Folkmun.se. The platform was launched in 2007 and contains (December 2016) about 4 600 headwords (lemmas). We analyse how the content of Folkmun.se has developed over time with particular focus on ten contributor aliases and how they have participated in the development of the dictionary. Our study displays some recurrent pattern in how different aliases work. We observe similarities in what kind of words they contribute with and the manner in which they define words. Many lemmas have in common that they are not described in traditional lexicons. Depending on contributor the articles differ in quality regarding both form and content.

- This article explores possibilities and challenges that electronic media represent in a collection of three dictionaries with Icelandic as a source language and Danish, Norwegian and Swedish as target languages, i.e. the ISLEX dictionaries. This new medium allows dictionary users to conduct searches in many ways, both in lemmas and in equivalents. The dictionaries could therefore be considered as both bi-directional and multi-functional, but it is important to emphasize that they were not developed with this in mind. This article uses this as a point of reference to discuss whether ISLEX should be categorized as a mono-, bi- or multi-lingual dictionary.

- In modern linguistics, the distinction between grammatical and lexical description has usually been sharp. As a consequence of the concentration on the grammar model in linguistic theory, the role of the lexicon has tended to become implicit, not to say undeveloped or trivial. In this paper, we give a survey of the evolution of the Swedish lexicographical tradition. Four distinct lexicographic lines of development are distinguished: the Latin, the patriotic, the bilingual, and the monolingual type of lexicography. A brief sketch of the early lexico¬graphers’ view on grammar and lexicon is given and, in particular, the effort by Abraham Sahlstedt to combine the two perspectives in a dictionary and a grammar. It has now become obvious that his approach was an isolated occurrence. The dichotomy between the grammatical and the lexical description can cause interesting linguistic problems to be completely overlooked. One such problem is dis¬cussed in the paper, viz. the possibility of deleting prepositions in Swedish. It is suggested that the mono¬lingual description would gain by a strengthened and explicit lexical and semantic dimension in grammar and vice versa. Further¬more, an explicit, contrastive perspective on grammatical and semantic features in the object languages would improve modern bilingual lexicography.

- The source language-target language dicotomy is not valid in the electronic dictionary, where information units in the target language are just as accessible as units in the source language. In this article, the consequences of multiple access in bilingual lexicography and its implications for dictionary typology are discussed. Focus lies on the representation of the target language vocabulary – more precisely on the coverage of the Swedish target language in the online Icelandic–Swedish Islex dictionary. The equivalent lacunas observed are partly due to discrepancies in the lexical structure of the languages involved, partly to the outdated role played by Swedish as target language in the dictionary.

- This article covers some of the findings of a pilot study of what we perceive to be a tendency towards a codification of the contemporary urban vernacular in written Swedish. In Sweden, the urban vernacular has traditionally been described as a youth language, and, as such, studied as a part of an (ephemeral) youth culture. However, both internationally and in Sweden there are claims to treat the urban vernacular as an urban dialect or ethnolect. This article contains a brief presentation of some the materials of this pilot study, as well as an account of three lexical items and how they are described in (mostly user-generated) lexicographical resources.

- The article presents the results of a log file analysis of the searches in Lexin Svenska ord, a free Swedish monolingual Internet dictionary. It focuses on the non-successful searches, called not-founds. The results show, firstly, that a considerable amount of the not-founds are correct spelled Swedish words, but they are not included in the lemma selection of the dictionary. Users also often search for two (or more) word expressions. Secondly, the dictionary’s programmed response in the case of not-founds gives far too many suggestions for it to be user-friendly; sometimes the user is given as many as forty suggestions on words that he or she could have been searching for. Thirdly, users tend to repeat their searches in order to obtain a successful search, for example they try another spelling. It is shown that log files can be a helpful tool in lexicographers work improving electronic as well as paperback dictionaries.

- Våren 2009 utkommer Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien (före detta Nationalencyklopedins ordbok, NEO, 1995–1996). Ett av de områden som genomgått en stor och välbehövlig revidering är idiomen (inkl. andra fastare ordförbindelser) (jfr Sköldberg 2006). Urvalet av idiom har setts över och deras placering har strukturerats om. Dessutom har huvudparten av idiomen försetts med språkprov. Dessa har excerperats från olika textkorpusar såsom redaktionens egna konkordanser, allmänt tillgängliga pressmaterial och via sökningar på Google. Språkprov har som funktion att bidra med information om semantiska, syntagmatiska, konnotationella och encyklopediska egenskaper hos ord (Malmgren 1994:109). Detsamma torde gälla för idiom. I föredraget diskuteras arbetet med excerperingen av exempel till idiomen i Svensk ordbok, de principer vi har arbetet efter och de problem som uppstått under arbetets gång. Det har t.ex. varit svårt att finna bra språkprov till idiom som har få belägg (jfr Kjellmer 1996) eller som tillhör fackspråklig terminologi. I de flesta fall har korpusexemplen redigerats och vi har tagit hänsyn till faktorer såsom längd, sanningshalt, förekomst av egennamn m.m. (jfr Lorentzen 2001:205). Längre språkprov är dock svåra att undvika i de fall idiomen är långa i sig eller då innebörden av dem inte framgår utan en klargörande kontext. Uppgiften har varit att utifrån dessa förutsättningar få de redigerade korpusexemplen att behålla sin naturlighet och autentiska karaktär.

- In my dissertation the method to describe semantic change used in the Swedish Academy dictionary (SAOB) is compared with cognitive semantic models of such a change. The work of SAOB is theoretically unbound in terms of overarching semantic theories, and the methods of describing word meaning and semantic change in the dictionary are rather developed for pragmatic reasons (such as consistency and economy etc.). The first volume of SAOB was published in 1898 and the latest in 2012. A lot has happened during this time within lexicographic theory as well as in general linguistics. To SAOB editors today the view of language and linguistics is to a large extent unlike the one the editors had in the late nineteenth century. Despite this fact the principles behind structuring and representing semantic information in the dictionary seem to have a lot in common with the theory based discussion in contemporary literature in the cognitive field. My starting point is to analyze the structure of articles in SAOB, in particular the use of specific labels used in the definitions, such as bildl. (figurative), utvidgdad anv. (extended use) etc. My aim is to evaluate the pragmatic SAOB model and to investigate to what extent it can be interpreted to represent the way humans structure and categorize language and linguistic meaning. In this presentation I will demonstrate examples of how the SAOB method can be transferred to and interpreted through models derived from cognitive semantics.

- The study presented in this article attempts to investigate the semantic preferences of three Swedish adjectives when used as attributes to express ’a high degree’ of a noun head word: hård (Eng. hard or severe), kraftig (Eng. powerful) and stark (Eng. strong). In some semantic contexts the three adjectives seem practically interchangeable, while in other contexts only one of them sounds “correct”. For example, ‘a high degree’ of the word vind (Eng. wind or breeze) can be expressed by any of the adjectives hård, kraftig or stark, but ‘a high degree’ of the word känsla (Eng. feeling) is normally expressed only by the adjective stark. Through corpus searches and through organizing the head nouns into semantic fields I try to establish the semantic contexts in which the adjectives hård, kraftig and stark can be used to express ‘a high degree’ of a noun. The objective is to disclose semantic patterns that language users are more or less unaware of. The present investigation constitutes a pilot study of a larger research project on the use of intensifying Swedish adjectives.

- I detta arbete undersöks beskrivningen av kollokationer i Svenska Akademiens ordbok (SAOB) (1893-). Jag funderar bl.a. kring vilka principer man har på SAOB vad gäller urval. Hur mycket bör tas med i en allmänspråklig historisk ordbok? Jag tittar också på hur kollokationer presenteras. Är presentationssättet konsekvent? Får läsaren information om vilken typ av ordförbindelse det handlar om? Finns det fasta regler vad gäller lemmaplacering? Jag berör också det faktum att man genom artiklarna i SAOB också får information om hur kollokationer har förändrats över tid. Som undersökningsmaterial har jag bl.a. använt en exempelsamling bestående av 28 kollokationer sammanställd av Sven-Göran Malmgren. I sin artikel Collocations in Swedish Dictionaries and Dictionary Research (2008) har Malmgren undersökt hur de utvalda kollokationerna beskrivs i tre olika ordböcker, nämligen Svenskt språkbruk, Nationalencyklopedins ordbok (NEO) och Norstedts engelsk-svenska ordbok. Malmgrens undersökning gör det alltså möjligt för mig att se hur väl SAOB täcker in de 28 kollokationerna i jämförelse med en konstruktionsordbok, en allmänordbok och en tvåspråkig ordbok.

- In this article I discuss problems related to the compilation of dictionaries for understudied languages that do not have a generally accepted written form. This task is in most cases undertaken by linguists with the purpose of describing and analyzing alanguage or by missionaries whose ultimate goal is to translate the Bible or other holy scriptures. As a case study, the structure of two different versions of a dictionary for Kammu, a minority language in Northern Laos, is described. One dictionary is primarily intended for linguists and other researchers, and the other one for the speakers of the language.

- A Swedish dialect dictionary ready to start. The project Swedish Dialect Dictionary has beenin progress at the Institute for Dialectology, Onomastics and Folklore Research in Uppsala since2003. People interested in dialects constitute the target group and the dictionary will be publishedin book form. A timescale of ten years and a limit of 1200 pages are some preliminary constraints.The collections of dialect words at the Institute are considered a sufficient basis in spite of aslightly uneven geographical distribution. Selection criteria are discussed, among others, that thedialect words should be drawn from at least ten independent sources or derive from three provinces.Besides the usual items of information on pronunciation, meaning etc., the microstructureof the dictionary entries contains the geographical distribution of the occurrences. The need forincreased resources if the project is to be completed within the time stated is emphasised.

- In a linguistic description there is normally a more or less conspicious lack of balance between the space a phenomenon requires to be fully described and its frequence in actual language usage, here called a lack of iconicity. The article investigates to what degree some Danish and Swedish dictionaries are iconical in this sense, i.e. whether the space of a word in the dictionary corresponds with its actual frequence. As expected, iconicity is rather meager, the most frequent words being treated much shorter than there actual frequence would suggest and the less frequent ones the other way around, though the more comprehensive the dictionary the more iconical it normally is regarding the first category. Further, frequent nouns and adjectives can be shown to exhibit a more iconical description than frequent verbs, and compounds and derivations treated together with their base words often exhibit a (shorter and thus) more iconical description than those treated as their own entries (often iconically much too extensive). Iconicity is of course not the overall ideal state of good dictionary entries: frequent form words are often best treated rather generalized (and thus rather shortly), some less frequent words can only be described accurately if described rather extensively. Yet, it is argued that iconicity should not be dismissed alltogether but to be considered as one factor (among many other ones) when deciding upon how much space a word is worth in a dictionary.
