  • Encounters between Believers and Non-Believers in a Symbolic Universe: Religious Dialogue and Controversy on the Internet
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - 0809-7291. ; 23:1, s. 71-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article examines aspects of the debate on faith between religious and secular actors on the Internet. Point of departure is taken in the question whether the Internet contributes to a deeper understanding and tolerance between religious and non-religious worldviews, or if it rather reproduces or possibly even intensifies existing conflicts related to religious discourse. The examination is situated in the context of what is conceived as an interplay of secularizing and counter-secularizing forces in the post-industrial, late-modern societies of the West. It is implemented by means of an analysis of the contributions posted on the discussion groups that deal with religion on a popular Swedish website.

  • Leaving a Folk Church : Patterns of Disaffiliation from the Church of Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - Oslo : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 34:1, s. 40-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Why do members leave the Church of Sweden? We address this question by employing longitudinal micro-level data, including socioeconomic variables, rootedness in the local parish and relation to the church, on the entire population of Sweden. We draw from in-depth longitudinal panel data analyses in this article. In line with secularization theory and prior work, higher education and individual income as well as being male are positively associated with disaffiliation. Moreover, moving from local parish and especially being or becoming resident of the capital city of Stockholm are significantly associated with a higher probability of leaving the church. Drawing on the theory of civil religion, we also find support for being baptized and confirmed in the Church of Sweden still being antidotes to disaffiliation.

  • The Organisation of Prayer Rooms in Educational Institutions in Denmark : Moderate Secularism Between Perception and Practice
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 35:2, s. 96-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2017, the Danish parliament discussed prayer rooms at educational institutions in a broadly publicised controversy. The debate followed a series of issues arising from such institutions’ changing demography, resulting in increased Muslim presence. Beneath the public and parliamentary debate in 2017, civil servants in ministries and educational institutions became highly engaged in negotiating what a prayer room is, on what legal grounds it could be established, and how local institutions should deal with it. Based on the data collected by the ministries, this paper provides an overview of the prayer rooms at educational institutions in Denmark and civil servants’ approaches to these rooms. It points out that prayer rooms in Denmark are mainly established and used by Christian youth organisations and not Muslims, in contrast to the general opinion.

  • Views on Human Rights among Christian, Muslim and non-religious youth in Norway and Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - Trondheim : Tapir Akademisk Forlag. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 25:1, s. 67-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the relation between religion and attitudes towards human rights among young people aged 17 to 19. The data material consists of 1660 questionnaires filled out in the classrooms by upper secondary school pupils living in the capital city of Oslo and in the Stockholm/ Uppsala area. We want first to find out if there are closer relations between religion and attitudes towards human rights concerning the private sphere than for attitudes towards human rights concerning the public sphere. By rights related to the private sphere we mean views on abortion and family values and by rights related to the public sphere we mean the right to work, views on social equality, freedom of speech, political interest and environmental protection. The study also looks at differences in this regard between Christians, Muslims and a group of nonreligious. The main result is that while a closer relation can be seen between religion and attitudes concerning the private sphere than attitudes concerning the public sphere, there is no support for the assumption that this relationship is stronger amongst the Muslim sub-group.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 26:2, s. 157-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Care after stillbirths has changed radically within the last twenty years, not least because of research. However, less attention has been given to memorialization in the longer perspective. This is a qualitative study based on a web questionnaire with the aim to uncover memorialization practices on anniversary days. 596 bereaved mothers of stillborn children provided an answer to an open question on how they observed the anniversary. The inductive analysis resulted in six categories of memorialization: (1) internal memorialization; (2) home-based memorialization; (3) traditional grave visits; (4) extended memorialization rituals; (5) alternative activities; and (6) coincidental activities. Different memory triggers – gifts, objects, food, and places – were used to evoke memories, honour the child, and strengthen the bonds with the child and within the family.

  • Religious liberty in democracy: Between individual tolerance and democratic inclusion
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 29, s. 18-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How can the concept of religious liberty be interpreted and understood in Swedish public discourse? Possible interpretations of religious liberty within a democratic frame are investigated through an interview study of prominent Swedish leaders in the religious and secular (although not political) arenas in 2010–2012. The results indicate wide differences in the interpretation of religious liberty. The keys to discrete interpretations of religious liberty in democracy are whether religion as such is perceived as an individual characteristic or a collective representation, and the valuation of religion as a social phenomenon. The interpretation of religious liberty is thus not defined by the view on individual agency: respect for free agency is ingrained. Against this backdrop, religious liberty in a democracy may be interpreted both as the state’s guarantee of minimal tolerance for personal choices and as a right to state-supported inclusion of collectively espoused religious beliefs that add particular value to democracy.

  • Intersections between Biopolitics and Religion : Cases of Politicisation of Religion in Finland and Norway
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 32:1, s. 40-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article comparatively studies intersections between biopolitics and religion in Finnish and Norwegian parliamentary debates on assisted reproductive technologies and biotechnology. In both countries, references to religion have been prevalent in policy processes and parliamentary debates on these issues, with Christian Democrats actively promoting bioethics. The article analyses references to religion and the role of national churches and Christian Democratic parties. It also discusses under what conditions religious positions influence political decisions and how these cases bring nuance to theories of politicisation of religion. Legal sources and parliamentary proceedings of plenary sessions are analysed through critical discourse analysis. The article suggests that reproductive politics has contributed to politicisation of religion in the Finnish and Norwegian parliaments, identifying blurred boundaries between public and private spheres and a discursive framework of values debates.

  • Religious Complexity in Nordic Public Spheres
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : AKADEMIKA AS, AKADEMIKA FORLAG. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 32:1, s. 71-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article studies empirically the complexity of religion in the public sphere by systematically comparing the five Nordic countries. Sociologists debate if current trends in the West point to secularization or a return of religion (deprivatization, desecularization, or post-secularity). By drawing on the social science complexity reference, this article offers a critique of current scholarship and introduces the concept of religious complexity. The empirical study asks how religion is regulated, debated, and negotiated in the state, the polity, the media, and civil society in the Nordic countries since the 1980s. It is based on multiple sources of data. The analysis shows several religious trends at different levels: A growing secularization at the individual level, and the deprivatization of religion in politics, the media, and civil society. The conclusion outlines the religious complexity in the Nordic countries and discusses possible explanations that link the different and seemingly inconsistent trends.

  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - Oslo : Akademika forlag. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 27:1, s. 59-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to construct a typology of the visual style of Christian spaces in the online vir-tual world of Second Life (SL). Virtual worlds offer diverse new possibilities for architecturalstyle, unrestricted by gravity, weather or scarcity of materials. These new regions also operatelargely beyond the control and indeed awareness of established religious authorities, so they canalso offer users new opportunities to reconsider the social structure of their communities. Thisresearch project aims to survey religious responses to these new potential freedoms. Research todate on religion in SL has focused on small samples of spaces or activity, but we found 114Christian spaces. An overwhelming number of the locations we visited featured a Christianchurch building. 81 of 114 included a church building that reproduced a recognizable offlinearchitectural style, and only 9 included a church with an entirely different style. Only 15 Chris-tian locations had buildings that cannot be characterised as churches.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 21:1, s. 91-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possibilities for Church of Sweden vicars to manage their parishes in change were explored in 2000. The results indicated that vicars had a low capacity for initiating and implementing organizational change. The aim of this investigation is to assess whether vicars have a managerial style that differ from other groups of civil servants. Using tested instruments, 240 Swedish vicars (response rate 64%), 300 school principals (66%) and 64 social insurance officers (95%) were asked about their leadership style, decision-making style, motivation profile and perceived operational demands. The vicars stand out as a special group of managers with a strong relationshiporientation. Headmasters and social officers are similar to each other in behaviour. The results are explained by that pastoral work is founded on relations, the pastoral training of the vicars and the «weight of history». A contributory cause may be that many priests are perceived as having a «helping approach» to leadership.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - Oslo : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 30:02, s. 136-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study concerns the Danish public service broadcaster DR’s television satire and comedy show Det slører stadig [Still Veiled] (2013) and its influence on public discussions and controversies concerning religion. Whereas news media’s coverage of Islam is often criticized for having a negative bias and thereby serving to escalate conflict, the cultural programming of public service broadcasters may provide different representations and enable more diverse discussions. In this study we consider how and to what extent Still Veiled gave rise to discussion and controversy concerning religion in both the general public sphere and in smaller cultural publics constituted through various social network media. The analysis shows that several, very different framings of religion appear in these debates. These debates furthermore involve a significant proportion of minority voices. The analysis suggests that a cultural public sphere may work as a corrective to the political public sphere dominated by news media.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 32:2, s. 106-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the 21st century, the Church of Sweden has lost its dominant position with regard to the ritualization of birth, marriage, and death. Above all, civil ceremonies have become more common. These are very free in form and content, but ritual actors often make them similar to church rituals. This article aims to investigate how practices used in ritualization in religious organizations are transferred to and given meaning in a civil context. In the study, 12 narrators talked about experiences of name-giving ceremonies, civil weddings, and civil funerals that they had designed and experienced. The results show that ritual actors’ social, religious, and cultural contexts have an impact on how ritual transfer is undertaken and given meaning. Civil ceremonies can connect to, as well as express resistance toward, religious organizations, religious traditions, and beliefs.

  • Who is Baptized? A Study of Socioeconomic, Regional and Gender Differences in Child Baptism in the Church of Sweden, 2005 and 2015
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 33:2, s. 72-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In less than 15 years, child baptism has gone from being a mainstream tradition to a minority practice. This decline is a result of both high unaffiliation, especially with the Church of Sweden, and a more diversified religious society due to migration. Using microdata from parents of children born in 2005 and 2015, we were able to discern that differences in the practice of child baptism in the Church of Sweden are positively associated with the parents' relation to the church, residence in rural areas, and income. Our LPM analysis shows that the probability of a child being baptized are mainly determined by the parents' relation to the church when controlling for all the other variables. The most influential factors are the mother's affiliation and an urban lifestyle. Parents' marital status and socioeconomic circumstances have a strong effect on the decision to baptize a child, therefore affecting who becomes a future member of the church.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 32:2, s. 148-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the orientations to religion found in a study of young Swedes aged 16-24, as well as the association between their orientation to religion and reported contact surface with religion. Drawing on the concept of religious complexity, the exploratory analysis approaches youth and religion in Sweden in light of three simultaneous developments that characterize contemporary Sweden: religious decline, religious diversity, and subjective approaches to religion. Based on survey data from 2014 (n=1019), the findings from a K Means cluster analysis point to four main orientations to religion amongst youth in Sweden: “Unconcerned,” “Believers,” “Belongers” and “Neutrals,” characterized by diverging patterns of self-identification, religious affinity, estimated importance of faith, and religious traditions. Further analysis explored associations between orientations to religion and contact surface with religion in everyday life. By distinguishing between different forms of non-religious positions and expressions of affinity to religion, the study contributes to new insights on religion in Sweden.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : SCANDINAVIAN UNIV PRESS-UNIVERSITETSFORLAGET AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 33:2, s. 87-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study is to examine possible changes in the politicisation of religion in Scandinavia over time in records from parliamentary debates in Denmark, Norway and Sweden 1988-1989, 1998-1999, 2008-2009 and 2018-2019. The study shows that religion and especially Islam continue to be highly politicised in Denmark and Sweden, with the right-wing populist parties as a driving force. However, changes in the party systems may have contributed to changes in the politicisation of religion. In the Danish parliament, the right-wing populist Danish People's Party has faced growing competition when religion has been politicised through increasing problematisation, which may have contributed to the party's major loss of voters in the 2019 election. In contrast, religion has been politicised to a lesser degree in the Norwegian parliament, possibly due to the fact that the right-wing populist Progress Party was part of the government at the time and therefore was expected to take on a higher degree of compromises.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 26:2, s. 121-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, I will analyse how Nordic political parties refer to religion in party platforms from the late 1980s until 2008 in light of increased religious diversity and changed relations between church and state in the Nordic countries. Four questions are asked: (1) Does the number of issue-areas related to religion increase or decrease over time in the party platforms? (2) Does the connection between religion and other political issues, such as national identity, foreign policy, and human rights, change during this period? (3) How do the political parties view the positions of the majority churches and do they change over time? (4) What differences can be observed between the political parties in their approach to religion? The data consist of 136 party platforms from all the five Nordic countries in 1988, 1998, and 2008. The analysis shows that issues-areas related to religion increase in Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Sweden, but decrease slightly in Norway. Religion is often mentioned in connection to religious diversity and globalization. The position of the majority churches in party platforms is fairly strong over time, although to decreasing degree, particularly in Sweden and Norway. Finally, the traditional religious cleavage (Lipset and Rokkan 1967) is still evident in Nordic politics, although the right-wing populist parties complicates this picture as they tend to use religion to defend national values against consequences of religious diversity.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : Scandinavian University Press / Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 31:2, s. 118-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the advocacy activities of the Church of Sweden. The historical co-optation of the Church by the state, a Lutheran theological heritage, and a trend from “voice to service” within Swedish civil society might discourage stronger political activism by the Church. The following research questions are answered: How does the extent of the advocacy activities of the Church of Sweden, understood as trying to influence politicians and officials and as achieving changes, differ from that of other civil society organizations (CSOs)? What factors explain differences in advocacy activities between the Church of Sweden and the other types of CSOs? How do the types of issues raised by the Church of Sweden through its influence differ from those of other CSOs? The article draws on a large sample (N = 1,150) from a national survey targeting Swedish civil society organizations. It compares the Church of Sweden with other organizations representing diffuse interests (i.e., religious congregations and solidarity organizations) and organizations representing specific interests (i.e., pensioners’ organizations). The analysis shows that the historical position of the Church has granted its organizations strength in terms of resources that make them more active in advocacy than comparable organizations representing diffuse interests. The Church of Sweden of the new millennium hence seems to be able to engage more in politics because of, rather than in spite of, its institutional role.

  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - Oslo : Fagbokforlaget. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 21:1, s. 43-59

    • This article proposes that a sociology of friendship may be used to explain the state of the evangelical church under postmodern conditions. Earlier studies on friendship have been coupled with a number of qualitative interviews made with members of three local congregations in Sweden. The findings include that a variety of friendships are developed and maintained in church. These, however, need to be coupled with other friendships in order to make church life meaningful. The most important parameter in this effort is that of sameness and diversity.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the possibilities of using digital methods to study religion and religious change in contemporary societies. It argues that despite considerable developments in which analogue data has been converted into digital forms and new digital methods have been developed, these are rarely used in sociology of religion. The article illustrates how new digital methods can complement more traditional qualitative methods and deepen such findings. Using examples from two PhD theses, the article analyses how so-called distant and close reading can be combined in studies. The cases illustrate key points regarding improving validity, representativity and how larger religious changing processes can be studied through large text material. The article concludes by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of using new digital methods and highlighting new possibilities for future studies in the sociology of religion.

  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Religion and Society. - : Universitetsforlaget AS. - 0809-7291 .- 1890-7008. ; 35:2, s. 83-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we utilize theories on nominal Christianity and stickiness to analyze 30 qualitative interviews collected in Denmark as part of an international research project investigating nonbelief. We analyze the data with the aim of answering the following tripartite research question: how do the participants conceptualize Danish culture and values? How do they speak about Folkekirken (the Danish Folk Church) when discussing Danish culture? And to what degree do they draw parallels between cultural Christianity and Danishness? In our analysis we highlight two main themes. First, we present how the participants perceive Folkekirken as a facilitator of culture and tradition rather than of religion; and second, we analyze the participantsʼ notions of national identity and cultural Christianity and find that their perceptions of Danish values are linked to their conceptions of cultural Christianity. We conclude that analysis of nonreligion in Denmark must take the role of Folkekirken and the particularity of Danish culture into account to acquire sufficient depth and accuracy.

    • Evangelicalism’s role in shaping democracy and the modern welfare state of Sweden has been emphasized in scholarly literature, but few studies have analyzed ongoing developments within this movement. This article explores intersections of political thought and Evangelical Christianity in Sweden, focusing on the revivalist newspaper Världen idag. Through a thematic analysis of 379 editorials from 2022, the study introduces the concept of Evangelical Supremacy, a political-ideological development of Evangelicalism that emphasizes a) Christian unity in political outlook, b) a revivalism that extends from the individual to the nation, and c) an alternative elitism that calls for the replacement of the elites of society with persons of Christian values. By combining qualitative thematic analysis with corpus linguistic techniques, this research discloses how a prominent Swedish Christian revivalist actor frequently employs concepts associated with the political ideology of radical nationalism.
