  • Patient-initiated breath-holds in MRI : an alternative for reducing respiratory artifacts and improving image quality
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Clinical imaging. - : Elsevier. - 0899-7071 .- 1873-4499. ; 39:4, s. 619-622
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To investigate MRI image quality using two different breath-hold techniques.Materials and methods: Thirty patients remitted for MRI, 2D-dual gradient echo acquisition of the liver conducted two separate breath-hold acquisitions in randomized order, operator-instructed and patient-initiated. The images were reviewed by two radiologists. Results: There were no significant differences in image quality between the two breath-hold techniques either in overall image quality or respiratory motion artifacts. This assessment was equal and concordant for both radiologists. Conclusion: In terms of image quality, the patient self-initiated breath-hold was shown to be an equal alternative to conventional breath-hold imaging.

  • Deep learning takes the pain out of back breaking work-Automatic vertebral segmentation and attenuation measurement for osteoporosis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Clinical Imaging. - : Elsevier BV. - 0899-7071. ; 81, s. 54-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Osteoporosis is an underdiagnosed and undertreated disease worldwide. Recent studies have highlighted the use of simple vertebral trabecular attenuation values for opportunistic osteoporosis screening. Meanwhile, machine learning has been used to accurately segment large parts of the human skeleton. Purpose: To evaluate a fully automated deep learning-based method for lumbar vertebral segmentation and measurement of vertebral volumetric trabecular attenuation values. Material and methods: A deep learning-based method for automated segmentation of bones was retrospectively applied to non-contrast CT scans of 1008 patients (mean age 57 years, 472 female, 536 male). Each vertebral segmentation was automatically reduced by 7 mm in all directions in order to avoid cortical bone. The mean and median volumetric attenuation values from Th12 to L4 were obtained and plotted against patient age and sex. L1 values were further analyzed to facilitate comparison with previous studies. Results: The mean L1 attenuation values decreased linearly with age by -2.2 HU per year (age > 30, 95% CI: -2.4, -2.0, R2 = 0.3544). The mean L1 attenuation value of the entire population cohort was 140 HU +/- 54. Conclusions: With results closely matching those of previous studies, we believe that our fully automated deep learning-based method can be used to obtain lumbar volumetric trabecular attenuation values which can be used for opportunistic screening of osteoporosis in patients undergoing CT scans for other reasons.

  • STRUCTURE OF UVRABC EXCINUCLEASE UV-DAMAGED DNA COMPLEXES STUDIED BY FLOW LINEAR DICHROISM - DNA CURVED BY UVRB AND UVRC
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: FEBS Letters. - : Wiley. - 1873-3468 .- 0014-5793. ; 314:1, s. 10-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interaction between UvrABC excinuclease from Escherichia coli and ultraviolet light- (UV) damaged DNA was studied by flow linear dichroism. The dichroism signal from DNA was drastically decreased in intensity upon incubation with UvrA and UvrB or whole enzyme in the presence of effector ATP. The change was specific for UV-damaged DNA, and a concluded suppressed DNA orientation suggests the wrapping of DNA around the protein. The incubation with the UvrC subunit alone also somewhat reduces the signal, however, in this case the change was smaller and not specific for UV-damaged DNA. The structural modification of DNA, promoted by the (UvrA2-UvrB) complex, probably facilitates or stabilizes the interaction of the UvrC subunit with DNA for the excision.

  • Direct capture of plasmid DNA from non-clarified bacterial lysate using polycation-grafted monoliths
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biotechnology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-4863 .- 0168-1656. ; 123:3, s. 343-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Monolith columns from macroporous polyacrylamide gel were grafted with polycations, poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (polyDMAEMA), (2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl)-trimethyl ammonium chloride (polyMETA) and partially quaternized polyDMAEMA prepared via treating polyDMAEMA-grafted columns with propylbromide. The polymer grafting degrees varied between 34 and 110%. The polycation-grafted monolithic columns are able to capture plasmid DNA directly from alkaline lysate of Escherichia coli cells. Due to the large pore size in macroporous monoliths the particulate material present in nonclarified feeds did not block the columns. The captured plasmid DNA was eluted with I M NaCl as particulate-free preparation with significantly reduced content of protein and RNA as compared to the applied lysate. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. • Stability and variability in the realism of confidence judgments over time, content domain, and gender
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Personality and Individual Differences. - : Pergamon. - 1873-3549 .- 0191-8869. ; 34:4, s. 559-574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the influence on the realism of confidence judgments of four different factors, the individual, the knowledge domain (crystallized and fluid intelligence), gender and cognitive style (Need-for-Cognition, NfC). Seventy-nine high-school students answered questions on word knowledge (WORD) and logical/spatial ability (DTK), both tests were administered on three occasions with two weeks between each trial. After each test question, each individual gave a confidence rating of his or her answer. The results showed some, but not perfect, individual stability. Furthermore, within-subject differences were found between domains (WORD/DTK); the participants showed better calibration and less overconfidence for the WORD-test as compared to the DTK-test. No stable gender differences were found for any of the two tests. Finally, the results show that having high NfC is not associated with better realism in confidence judgments. These results suggest that the realism of confidence judgments is, at least on the distal level, influenced by many different factors.
