  • Understanding the development of emerging complex intelligent systems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : ELSEVIER. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the intricate emergence of complex and increasingly intelligent systems (CoIS) in the wake of new possibilities created by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, building on an analysis of the emergence of CoIS using perspectives of development and change. The findings, based on rich qualitative data collected through key informant interviews with reflective practitioners from aviation, automotive and naval system domains, indicate that firms facing the emergence of CoIS, need to build capabilities allowing several logics to co-exist in a newly evolving hybrid CoIS management logic.

  • Can innovation be measured? A framework of how measurement of innovation engages attention in firms
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering and Technology Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 48, s. 64-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many firms manage the innovation process by using metrics. Yet, whether measurement supports or hinders innovation continues to be a topic of debate. To shed new light on this debate, this paper presents a conceptual framework of how measurement engages attention in firms. We draw on attention based theory and conceptualize innovation measurement as an attention-focusing device. We identify two ideal types of measurement practices. i) Directional Measurement: which is based on few and unidirectional metrics and encourages exploitative innovation efforts. ii) Conversational Measurement: which is based on multiple and ambiguous metrics and encourages exploration. We extend theory building in the technology and accounting literatures by theo- rizing the role of metrics and measurement for attention and by discussing the implications of such attentional engagement for innovation performance. In so doing, we engage closely with the managerial task of managing innovation while simplifying its conditions, thereby providing ac- tionable advice.

  • Exploring the relationship between flagship platform projects and intrapreneurial self-renewal activities : Managing intrapreneurial equivocality
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 38, s. 37-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the relationship between flagship projects and intrapreneurial self-renewal activities in an explorative, in-depth case study of the concept phase in a multi-project setting. Five renewal processes (design management, project control, system engineering, time management, and decision making) stood out in the study; each of which had an impact on organizational performance. These five processes were of an equivocal character and should be seen as entrepreneurial because they influenced organizational performance. In line with previous literature, it is proposed that, in general, any type of business project would infuse intrapreneurial activities; however, flagship projects in particular increase the level of intrapreneurial equivocality and infuse parallel and collective development of intrapreneurial activities because such projects call for significant organizational self-renewal. Our particular contribution is that we define and introduce the concept of intrapreneurial equivocality.

  • A tentative framework for analyzing integration in collaborative manufacturing network settings : A case study
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 22:1-2, s. 141-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is important for small and medium-sized corporations to collaborate in networks in order to develop capacity, capability, and competence to perform product development and become suppliers of complete systems. The purpose of this case study is to identify barriers and to develop an analytical framework of inter-organizational collaboration in network settings. In this paper we present a tentative four-dimensional framework in terms of surface of integration, scope of integration, time horizon of integration, and intensity of integration. This framework can be used to analyze how network settings are developed, in terms of structural design of the network, the design of the workflow in collaborative settings, and the aspects of handling the psychological and social boundaries between people. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. • Exploring uncertainties in collaborative product development: Managing customer-supplier collaborations
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering and Technology Management - JET-M. - : Elsevier BV. - 1608-4799 .- 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 53:July–September, s. 49-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper explores technological, commercial and organizational uncertainties of collaborative product development by customers and suppliers. The empirical data consist of an in-depth single case study of a collaborative product development project. The findings provide a deep insight into the dynamic character of different uncertainties in collaborative product development. The study shows the complexity of managing uncertainties as well as the importance of having not only well-functioning external collaboration but also internal cross-functional collaboration. The findings imply how uncertainties are interrelated and how one type of uncertainty influences other uncertainties, which affects how both customers and suppliers manage the relationship.

  • Supplier involvement in product development : Challenges and mitigating mechanisms from a supplier perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores challenges that suppliers experience when being involved in customers’ product development projects, and how these challenges can be mitigated. It presents a framework of supplier involvement in product development involving four dimensions: People-Process-Tools/Technology-Interaction. The framework consists of 24 challenges and associated mitigating mechanisms. The article concludes that suppliers must be aware of the challenges to ensure that proper internal capabilities are in place within their organizations. It also argues that customers should be aware of the challenges to provide best possible prerequisites for suppliers to ensure successful project outcomes.

  • The front end in non-assembled product development : a multiple case study of mineral- and metal firms
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 29:4, s. 468-488
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conceptualize the front end in non-assembled product development to be iterative and experiment-based, consisting of three sub-phases: informal start-up, formal idea-study, and formal pre-study. Although some key activities are shared with the front end activities in assembled product development, literature reviews, anticipating requirements of customers’ production processes, analysis of raw materials, anticipation of scale-up problems, and tests in bench-, pilot plant-, and full scale production represent unique activities. In addition, product concepts were frequently developed in parallel, requiring specification of physical, chemical and structural properties. These findings have implications for increasing the success and quality of front end efforts

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 22:3, s. 226-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collaborative manufacturing networks are becoming popular. Today, the scale of these networks can be enormous, and include a complex myriad of partners from numerous companies and organizations spanning several countries and even continents. This paper explores how these partners successfully coordinate projects through an investigation of one such “collaborative manufacturing mega-network” or CMMN in the commercial aerospace industry. The case is analyzed with the aid of the literary state-of-the-art, and a number of organizational, structural, and cultural issues are discussed including mass customization. Finally, some of the most important factors for the successful CMMN are presented.

  • Navigating uncharted waters : Designing business models for virtual and augmented reality companies in the medical industry
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New technologies are at the heart of industry transformation. Virtual and augmented reality companies provide fundamentally new ways of communication, treatment, education, and specialist training within the medical industry. However, business models for new ventures that target the medical industry have received scant attention within academic research. Using a multiple case study approach, we analyze how virtual and augmented reality firms create value for their customers in the medical industry. In all, we have studied eight companies that offer different types of solutions for their target segments. The results of the analysis are four design elements consisting of twelve positions and three design themes that define the similarities and differences between the business models for the companies. We contribute to existing research within the field by analyzing business models of the investigated companies using a design approach, classifying the virtual and augmented reality companies, and analyzing the role of new technology in the development of the medical industry.

  • The quest for combined generativity and criticality in digital-physical complex systems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transformation from physical systems into digital-physical systems puts new engineering and technology management challenges at the foreground. This paper explores how industrial firms engaged in such systems simultaneously can address the seemingly disjunct properties of criticality and generativity in platform-based systems including the connected (inter)-organizational processes and related strategic choices. The in-depth embedded single case study of avionics, the electronics on aircraft, underline the importance of (1) considering organizational and technology aspects together, (2) the long-term gradual transition towards digitalization, and (3) openness in innovation including temporality and cross-industry aspects. Digital innovation appears as a double-edged sword as it enables mastering an increasingly complex system, facilitating its safe operation and maintenance, but at the same time requires new approaches to manage increased complexity during the development and evolution of systems.

  • Aligning manufacturing strategy and levels of automation : A case study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719 .- 1608-4799. ; 27:3/4, s. 148-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research has shown that alignment between manufacturing strategy and decisions regarding automation are often of an ad hoc nature, i.e. the support for automation decisions is poor. Support tools to find an appropriate level of automation are thus needed in order to achieve more efficient and robust production systems. The methodology presented in this paper contains five sub-processes where the chosen level of automation is aligned with the manufacturing strategy. Together they form an automation strategy, which secures a desired direction of the firm and also supports robustness and reliability of the manufacturing system due to the holistic approach chosen.

  • Managing competence acquisition and financial performance : An empirical study of how small firms use competence acquisition strategies
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 30:4, s. 327-349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Past research has neglected how small firms manage competence acquisition. Based on transaction cost literature, this article identifies competence acquisition management strategies and their implications for performance. We explore this issue using survey data from 842 small, knowledge-intensive firms. The results outline four aspects of competence acquisition management: (1) competence absorbers, (2) social acquirers, (3) market acquirers, and (4) nonacquirers. Furthermore, we hypothesized and found that market acquirers score higher in terms of financial performance than firms following the other strategies. The market acquirer strategy proved particularly effective under conditions of high dynamism.

  • Uncertainty in collaborative NPD: effects on the selection of technology and supplier
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 31:1, s. 103-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To gain competitive advantage, firms involve suppliers in New Product Development (NPD).  However, uncertainty affects selection of suppliers and associated technologies, and selection outcomes in terms of commitment to one supplier or maintaining flexibility. We report on a case study of collaborative NPD with the aim to develop an energy storage unit. The case involved selection of both technology and supplier, where both were changed during the NPD. Drawing upon Hall et al. (2011), we analyze technological, organizational and commercial uncertainties. We demonstrate how technological, commercial and organizational uncertainties cause firms to seek flexibility rather than commitment to one supplier.

  • Linking long-term capacity management for manufacturing and service operations
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 29:1, s. 22-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For firms that combine manufacturing and service operations in onesystem, the task of managing capacity is not straightforward. New goods and services may not have the same set of competitive priorities, and the models and concepts available in the literature for service operations differ from those for manufacturing operations. We address this problem and review the concepts and modelsfor capacity management in the long term in both streams of literature, i.e. manufacturing and services, to develop a unified framework for manufacturing and service operations. The framework creates transparency between new goods manufacturing and service operations, since the same long-term capacity management structure is used for both product types, as well as between capacity strategy and planning strategy, since new goods and services are treated simultaneously. In the framework, the concepts of chase and level strategies are redefined for service operations to allow for integration with manufacturing operations. A case study demonstrates the usefulness of the integrated approach for long-term capacity management.

  • How a learning orientation affects drivers of innovativeness and performance in service delivery
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 30:2, s. 169-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relying on organizational innovativeness for long-term growth and profitability can be difficult, time consuming, and expensive. In the context of service delivery of 395 strategic business units (SBU) in Israel's healthcare industry, this paper examines the role of a learning-orientation as a moderator in an integrative model of organizational innovativeness. We find moderation of the impacts of risk-taking, creativity, competitor benchmarking orientation, and environmental opportunities on innovativeness. Moreover, we find the influence on performance pronounced for high learning-oriented SBUs. The paper shows that learning orientation should be considered for understanding effective innovativeness work for competitive service delivery.

  • A bibliographic analysis of 20 years of research on innovation and new product development in technology and innovation management (TIM) journals
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this perspectives article, we analyze 20 years of research on the topics of "innovation man-agement" and "new product development" in the technology and innovation management (TIM) domain. More specifically, we investigate the questions related to three issues: (i) Performance: Which authors, institutions, countries, journals, and papers have been most productive (number of papers) and most influential (number of citations)? (ii) Networks: What are the links between authors, between countries, between institutions, between journals and co-citation? (iii) Attention: What has been the shift in research attention (i.e., stated keywords) over time? To do this, we use the VOSViewer bibliographic method to assess the domain's performance and its changes in research attention and present maps of the knowledge structure and networks. Our study adds to and improves upon previous bibliometric reviews in terms of extensivity (i.e., data from 7,612 papers), scope, and accuracy. In addition to the descriptive evaluations of the domain, we also suggest several implications from these results. For performance, we highlight a weak link be-tween productive authors and influential authors, which could be explained by productive au-thors being part of extensive co-authorship networks, being selective and publishing less but in the highest quality journals, and working in countries with institutions that pioneer research on the topic (and conversely, less influential authors working in countries with an incentive structure that rewards quantity but not quality). Our network results help explain that collaborations are linked to research productivity rather than influential research. Further, our network results reveal collaborations based on country linkages that might create research echo chambers in which research attention is augmented or reinforced by a geographical network. From our results on research attention, we discuss how the dominant keywords are restricted to TIM topics and highly influenced by seminal papers and authors outside the TIM domain. Thus, the field is predominantly inward-looking, drawing from other cognate business and management fields, and hardly drawing from other academic fields. These findings elucidate and extend the concerns other innovation management scholars have raised, noting that the lack of varied and cooperative authorship within the TIM domain has led to stale, repeated methods and metrics in TIM papers, potentially reducing the field's future influence. We conclude by outlining some adverse impli-cations of our paper. We explain how its evaluations could further produce confirmation biases author and institution standing and motivate publication strategies and incentives that exacerbate research misconduct.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 39, s. 13-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Process development is key to competitiveness in process industries. However, budget overruns frequently plague process development projects which span organizational boundaries to involve both buyers and suppliers. We identify uncertainty and equivocality as key antecedents causing such negative effects, and investigate the reduction and performance implications of these two variables. An empirical survey of 52 joint process development projects show that project teams reduce uncertainty through early end-user involvement, whereas equivocality can be reduced by joint problem-solving activities among buyers and suppliers.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 26:3, s. 148-166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Strategic SME networks have received significant policy attention, yet a review of the current literature reveals limited attention to the factors that contribute to network innovation. This study examines the influence of the number of member firms (network size), the extent to which a network is based on firm incentives (bottom-up formation), and the extent of development of the governance structure (size of administrative function) on a network's innovative performance. Latent growth modeling with longitudinal data from 53 networks reveals that larger networks and bottom-up formed networks achieve greater innovative performance, and that the administrative function partially mediates these effects.

    • This study highlights how smaller firms gain advantages through exchange strategies in alliances. Based on a sample of 141 firms involved in multipartner alliances governed by cooperative exchange norms, our findings support the hypothesis that smaller firms are more likely than larger firms to comply with cooperative exchange norms. This finding is especially valid for firms in manufacturing industries and can positively influence new product development. This study is a starting point for additional research investigating how, when, and why firms can benefit from engaging in multipartner alliances, even if they are a relatively small player.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering and Technology Management - JET-M. - : Elsevier BV. - 1608-4799 .- 0923-4748. ; 65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on an in-depth case study of an automotive manufacturer sourcing parts for high technology projects, this study investigates the intentions and structure of socialization within and between firms during the supplier selection process in technologically uncertain sourcing situations. Here, we aim to answer the question of how socialization can hedge against the high levels of uncertainty for manufacturers selecting suppliers of high technology resources. The case represents a major automotive manufacturer in Northern Europe, and is based on 38 semi-structured interviews with representatives of the different functions involved in the sourcing for the new development projects. Our data suggest that internal and external socialization during the supplier selection process can improve internal alignment and problem solving, and external familiarity towards the sourcing task. In this context, socialization took place on functional, cross-functional, and (inter)corporate levels, with higher functional autonomy during the assessment, and higher cross-functional integration during negotiations and decision making, adding to the debate on whether functions should be integrated or separated.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering and Technology Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748. ; 54, s. 56-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Standards on product information can facilitate the diffusion of innovations. This paper explores the standards related to the ventilation products with improved acoustic performance and the stakeholders involved. We introduce a new approach to classification and identification of the functions of standards in supporting such innovations. Moreover, our analysis of stakeholders indicates that the companies providing building modeling software have a pivotal role to play regarding the exchange of product information and the diffusion of innovative products. This is due to a market-mediated interdependence among ventilation product manufacturers, software companies, and engineering services firms that can create network effects.

    • The stage gatemodel has been proposed for application to uncertain technology development. Reports on industrial experience fromsuch implementations are quite limited, however. This led us to explore in six companies what adaptations have been made to facilitate the model’s usefulness for technology development and the companies’experiences from their practical application of themodel. Our results indicate that aspects proven important for the operational success, or failure, of the model include the level of adaptation to the characteristics of technology development and a more flexible use than that normally found in product development.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Energy Conversion and Management. - : Elsevier. - 0196-8904 .- 1879-2227. ; 163, s. 278-291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The operating strategy can affect the optimal solution and performance of a polygeneration energy system. In this study, the effect of operating strategies: following thermal load; following electric load; and modified baseload on the optimal solution of a polygeneration system for a residential building complex in the northern part of Italy is investigated. For the optimal solutions, a comparative analysis is carried out considering the techno-economic and environmental performance of the system. The result elaborates on how the benefits achieved in a polygeneration system are influenced by the choice of operating strategy. In the building complex, implementation of the operating strategies shows considerable energetic, economic and environmental benefits compared to conventional separate heat and power generation. The ranges of annualized total cost reduction of 17–19%, carbon dioxide emission reduction of 35–43% and fuel consumption reduction of 30–38% are achieved for the various operating strategies. However, each of the operating strategies has its own advantages and drawbacks which emphasizes the importance of post-processing of the results in order to make the right choice. For example, the following thermal load shows the advantage of a higher carbon dioxide emission reduction. On the other hand, one drawback is its lower self-sustainability in terms of electric power compared to the other strategies.
