  • Real-valued syntactic word vectors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of experimental and theoretical artificial intelligence (Print). - 0952-813X .- 1362-3079. ; 32:4, s. 557-579
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce a word embedding method that generates a set of real-valued word vectors from a distributional semantic space. The semantic space is built with a set of context units (words) which are selected by an entropy-based feature selection approach with respect to the certainty involved in their contextual environments. We show that the most predictive context of a target word is its preceding word. An adaptive transformation function is also introduced that reshapes the data distribution to make it suitable for dimensionality reduction techniques. The final low-dimensional word vectors are formed by the singular vectors of a matrix of transformed data. We show that the resulting word vectors are as good as other sets of word vectors generated with popular word embedding methods.

  • Floridi's informational structural realist basis for info-computational modelling of cognizing agents
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of experimental and theoretical artificial intelligence (Print). - 0952-813X .- 1362-3079. ; 27:1, s. 13-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Informational structural realism, ISR (Floridi, 2008a), describes the reality as a complex informational structure for an epistemic agent interacting with the universe by the exchange of data as constraining affordances. In conjunction with naturalist computationalism - the view that the dynamics of the nature can be understood as computation - Floridi's ISR presents a basis for the construction of the unified framework of info-computationalism. In this framework, the fundamental mechanism of all natural computation is morphological computation, expressed as a process of information self-organisation, with information structure understood in the sense of Floridi's ISR. Recently, in robotics, morphological computing has been used for decentralised embodied control of robots. In this article, we describe how appropriate body morphology saves information-processing (computation) resources as well as enables learning through self-structuring of information in an epistemic, cognizing agent.

  • A case-based approach to dialogue systems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of experimental and theoretical artificial intelligence (Print). - : Taylor & Francis. - 0952-813X .- 1362-3079. ; 22:1, s. 23-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe an approach to integrate dialogue management, machine-learning and action planning in a system for dialogue between a human and a robot. Case-based techniques are used because they permit life-long learning from experience and demand little prior knowledge and few static hand-written structures. This approach has been developed through the work on an experimental dialogue system, called CEDERIC, that is connected to an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A single case base and case-based reasoning engine is used both for understanding and for planning actions by the UAV. Dialogue experiments both with experienced and novice users, where the users have solved tasks by dialogue with this system, showed very adequate success rates.

  • A robot sets a table : a case for hybrid reasoning with different types of knowledge
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of experimental and theoretical artificial intelligence (Print). - : Taylor & Francis. - 0952-813X .- 1362-3079. ; 28:5, s. 801-821
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An important contribution of AI to Robotics is the model-centred approach, whereby competent robot behaviour stems from automated reasoning in models of the world which can be changed to suit different environments, physical capabilities and tasks. However models need to capture diverse (and often application-dependent) aspects of the robot's environment and capabilities. They must also have good computational properties, as robots need to reason while they act in response to perceived context. In this article, we investigate the use of a meta-CSP-based technique to interleave reasoning in diverse knowledge types. We reify the approach through a robotic waiter case study, for which a particular selection of spatial, temporal, resource and action KR formalisms is made. Using this case study, we discuss general principles pertaining to the selection of appropriate KR formalisms and jointly reasoning about them. The resulting integration is evaluated both formally and experimentally on real and simulated robotic platforms.

  • Perceptrons with polynomial post-processing
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of experimental and theoretical artificial intelligence (Print). - 0952-813X .- 1362-3079. ; 12, s. 57-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce tensor product neural networks, composed of a layer of univariate neurons followed by a net of polynomial post-processing. We look at the general approximation properties of these networks observing in particular their relationship to the Stone-Weierstrass theorem for uniform function algebras. The implementation of the post-processing as a two-layer network, with logarithmic and exponential neurons leads to potentially important `generalized ’ product networks, which however require a complex approximation theory of Mu$ntz-Szasz-Ehrenpreis type. A back-propagation algorithm for product networks is presented and used in three computational experiments. In particular, approximation by a sigmoid product network is compared to that of a single layer radial basis network, and a multiple layer sigmoid network. An additional experiment is conducted, based on an operational system, to further demonstrate the versatility of the architecture.

  • Engineering characteristics of autonomous agent architectures
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of experimental and theoretical artificial intelligence (Print). - 0952-813X .- 1362-3079. ; 12:2, s. 191-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the science of building agents and agent based applications improves, agents are gradually making the transition from research laboratory prototypes to industrial applications. In an industrial setting pragmatic engineering issues related to the development and maintenance of agents come to the fore. In this paper a list of important engineering characteristics of agent architectures is presented. The list has the dual aims of providing evaluation criteria for agent users and design issues for agent architecture designers. Evaluation of an architecture with respect to the presented characteristics will allow industrial project managers to better assess the trade offs between architectures. Designing architectures that better fulfill the characteristics should lead to more industrially relevant architectures and successful agent applications. This list is designed to start discussion and raise awareness of industrial issues. It is hoped that over time good metrics and an evaluation methodology evolve which provide a robust framework for evaluating agent architectures with respect to industrial concerns.

  • A bootstrapping method for development of Treebank
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of experimental and theoretical artificial intelligence (Print). - 0952-813X .- 1362-3079. ; 29:1, s. 19-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using statistical approaches beside the traditional methods of natural language processing could significantly improve both the quality and performance of several natural language processing (NLP) tasks. The effective usage of these approaches is subject to the availability of the informative, accurate and detailed corpora on which the learners are trained. This article introduces a bootstrapping method for developing annotated corpora based on a complex and rich linguistically motivated elementary structure called supertag. To this end, a hybrid method for supertagging is proposed that combines both of the generative and discriminative methods of supertagging. The method was applied on a subset of Wall Street Journal (WSJ) in order to annotate its sentences with a set of linguistically motivated elementary structures of the English XTAG grammar that is using a lexicalised tree-adjoining grammar formalism. The empirical results confirm that the bootstrapping method provides a satisfactory way for annotating the English sentences with the mentioned structures. The experiments show that the method could automatically annotate about 20% of WSJ with the accuracy of F-measure about 80% of which is particularly 12% higher than the F-measure of the XTAG Treebank automatically generated from the approach proposed by Basirat and Faili [(2013). Bridge the gap between statistical and hand-crafted grammars. Computer Speech and Language, 27, 1085-1104].

  • Analogy as a search procedure : a dimensional view
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Artificial Intelligence. - 0952-813X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we outline a comprehensive approach to composed analogies based on the theory of conceptual spaces. Our algorithmic model understands analogy as a search procedure and builds upon the idea that analogical similarity depends on a conceptual phenomena called ‘dimensional salience.’ We distinguish between category-based, property-based, event-based, and part-whole analogies, and propose computationally-oriented methods for explicating them in terms of conceptual spaces. In this paper, we outline a comprehensive approach to composed analogies based on the theory of conceptual spaces. • Two groups of phenylalanine biosynthetic operon leader peptides genes : a high level of apparently incidental frameshifting in decoding Escherichia coli pheL
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nucleic Acids Research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0305-1048 .- 1362-4962. ; 39:8, s. 3079-3092
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The bacterial pheL gene encodes the leader peptide for the phenylalanine biosynthetic operon. Translation of pheL mRNA controls transcription attenuation and, consequently, expression of the downstream pheA gene. Fifty-three unique pheL genes have been identified in sequenced genomes of the gamma subdivision. There are two groups of pheL genes, both of which are short and contain a run(s) of phenylalanine codons at an internal position. One group is somewhat diverse and features different termination and 5’-flanking codons. The other group, mostly restricted to Enterobacteria and including Escherichia coli pheL, has a conserved nucleotide sequence that ends with UUC_CCC_UGA. When these three codons in E. coli pheL mRNA are in the ribosomal E-, P- and A-sites, there is an unusually high level, 15%, of +1 ribosomal frameshifting due to features of the nascent peptide sequence that include the penultimate phenylalanine. This level increases to 60% with a natural, heterologous, nascent peptide stimulator. Nevertheless, studies with different tRNA(Pro) mutants in Salmonella enterica suggest that frameshifting at the end of pheL does not influence expression of the downstream pheA. This finding of incidental, rather than utilized, frameshifting is cautionary for other studies of programmed frameshifting.
