  • Rotational Bands in the Semi-magic Nucleus 57Ni
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 37:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two rotational bands have been identified and characterized in the proton-magic N = Z + 1 nucleus Ni-57. These bands complete the systematics of well-and superdeformed rotational bands in the light nickel isotopes starting from doubly magic Ni-56 to Ni-60. High-spin states in Ni-57 have been produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction Si-28(S-32, 2p1n)Ni-57 and studied with the gamma-ray detection array GAMMASPHERE operated in conjunction with detectors for evaporated light charged particles and neutrons. The features of the rotational bands in Ni-57 are compared to those of neighbouring isotopes and interpreted by means of configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The two observed high-spin bands are considered signature partners and assigned to configurations with one 1g(9/2) proton and one 1g(9/2) neutron, resulting in an unambiguous understanding of the energetically favoured signature alpha = -1/2 band but a somewhat less satisfactory description of the signature alpha = +1/2 band.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 41:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • LICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is studying the physics of strongly interacting matter, and in particular the properties of the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP), using proton–proton, proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions at the CERN LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The ALICE Collaboration is preparing a major upgrade of the experimental apparatus, planned for installation in the second long LHC shutdown in the years 2018–2019. A key element of the ALICE upgrade is the construction of a new, ultra-light, high-resolution Inner Tracking System (ITS) based on monolithic CMOS pixel detectors. The primary focus of the ITS upgrade is on improving the performance for detection of heavy-flavour hadrons, and of thermal photons and low-mass di-electrons emitted by the QGP. With respect to the current detector, the new Inner Tracking System will significantly enhance the determination of the distance of closest approach to the primary vertex, the tracking efficiency at low transverse momenta, and the read-out rate capabilities. This will be obtained by seven concentric detector layers based on a 50 μm thick CMOS pixel sensor with a pixel pitch of about 30×30 μm2. This document, submitted to the LHCC (LHC experiments Committee) in September 2013, presents the design goals, a summary of the R&D activities, with focus on the technical implementation of the main detector components, and the projected detector and physics performance.

The ALICE Collaboration is preparing a major upgrade of the experimental apparatus, planned for installation in the second long LHC shutdown in the years 2018–2019. These plans are presented in the ALICE Upgrade Letter of Intent, submitted to the LHCC (LHC experiments Committee) in September 2012. In order to fully exploit the physics reach of the LHC in this field, high-precision measurements of the heavy-flavour production, quarkonia, direct real and virtual photons, and jets are necessary. This will be achieved by an increase of the LHC Pb–Pb instant luminosity up to 6×1027 cm−2s−1 and running the ALICE detector with the continuous readout at the 50 kHz event rate. The physics performance accessible with the upgraded detector, together with the main detector modifications, are presented.

  • Mass effect and coherence in medium-induced QCD radiation off a q(q)over-bar antenna
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 38:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The medium-induced one-gluon radiation spectrum off a massive quark-antiquark (q (q) over bar) antenna traversing a colored QCD medium is calculated in this contribution. The gluon spectrum off the antenna computed at first order in the opacity expansion is collinear finite but infrared divergent, which is different from the result obtained from an independent emitter which is both infrared and collinear finite. The interference between emitters dominates the soft gluon radiation when the antenna opening angle is small and the emitted gluon is soft, whereas the antenna behaves like a superposition of independent emitters when the opening angle is large and the radiated gluon is hard. As a phenomenological consequence, we investigate the energy lost by the projectiles due to the radiation. In general, the size of the mass effects is similar in both cases.

  • The viscosity to entropy ratio from PHENIX data on single electron production
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX experiment has measured electrons from the decay of hadrons carrying heavy flavor (charm or bottom quarks) in p + p and Au + Au collisions at at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The strong damping of heavy-flavor motion through the medium is reflected in a substantial suppression at high pT and a large azimuthal anisotropy v2 of such electrons in Au + Au collisions at RHIC. By requiring a simultaneous description of the nuclear modification factor RAA(pT) and the azimuthal anisotropy v2(pT) in transport models, the viscosity to entropy density ratio of the medium can be estimated as η/s (1.3–2)(1/4π), which is close to the conjectured lower quantum bound and, therefore, near a perfect fluid.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 38:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at the LHC may exhibit collective phenomena such as elliptic flow. We study this issue using DIPSY, a brand-new Monte Carlo event generator which features almost-NLO BFKL dynamics and describes the transverse shape of the proton including all fluctuations. We predict the eccentricity of the collision as a function of the multiplicity and estimate the magnitude of elliptic flow. We suggest that flow can be signaled by a sign change in the four-particle azimuthal correlation.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 37:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A quarter of a century's concerted international work in halo physics has resulted in an extended nuclear paradigm encompassing the limits of existence of cold nuclei and also structures beyond-continuum structures of open (nuclear) quantum systems. Realistic working models, based on cluster constituents, have sprung out of the very nature of halo phenomena, in particular from the three-body Borromean property of two-neutron halos, the lack of low-lying binary breakup channels. This has provided transparency and possibility for insight into new quantum behaviour, also in continua beyond driplines-a focus of this status assessment. Breakup spectra and progressively exclusive correlation cross sections can be computed and show, where relevant data exist, not only that general agreement is encouraging but also that some exclusive observables exhibit significant disagreement that has to be clarified. Progress in studies of two-proton emitters has provided another pathway beyond driplines, where again few-body theory appears promising.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 40:5, s. 055105-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study low-lying states of even carbon isotopes in the range A = 10-20 within the large-scale no-core shell model. Using several accurate nucleon-nucleon (NN) as well as NN plus three-nucleon (NNN) interactions, we calculate excitation energies of the lowest 2(+) state, the electromagnetic B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) transition rates, and the 2(1)(+) quadrupole moments as well as selected electromagnetic transitions among other states. Recent experimental campaigns to measure 2(+)-state lifetimes indicate an interesting evolution of nuclear structure that pose a challenge to reproduce theoretically from first principles. Our calculations do not include any effective charges or other fitting parameters. However, calculated results extrapolated to infinite model spaces are also presented. The model-dependence of those results is discussed. Overall, we find good agreement with the experimentally observed trends, although our extrapolated B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) value for C-16 is lower compared to the most recent measurements. Relative transition strengths from higher excited states are investigated and the influence of NNN forces is discussed. In particular for 16C we find a remarkable sensitivity of the transition rates from higher excited states to the details of the nuclear interactions.

  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - 0954-3899. ; 21:2, s. 193-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The level scheme of 157Er has been extended from a spin region where the nucleus behaves as a prolate rotor to a region where the spin is produced by the alignment of all or most of the available valence nucleons along the symmetry axis of a weakly deformed oblate shape. The level scheme was established at high spin using up to four-fold gamma -ray coincidences detected in the Eurogam spectrometer following the reaction 114Cd( 48Ca,5n)157Er at a bombarding energy of 210 MeV. Particularly favoured states have been established at IK=69/2+, 81/2+, 71/2+, 77/2-, 87-/2 and 89-/2. Specific single-particle configurations are assigned to these special states by comparison with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. These states are related to structures observed in the neighbouring nuclei 158Er and 157Ho. These data provide the spectrum of single-particle states for the lowest lying valence orbitals above the 146Gd closed core.

  • Diffractive ρ production at small x in future electron-ion colliders
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 43:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The future electron-ion (eA) collider is expected to probe the high energy regime of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD), with the exclusive vector meson production cross section being one of the most promising observables. In this paper we complement previous studies of exclusive processes presenting a comprehensive analysis of diffractive ρ production at small x. We compute the coherent and incoherent cross sections taking into account non-linear QCD dynamical effects and considering different models for the dipole-proton scattering amplitude and vector meson wave function. The dependence of these cross sections on the energy, photon virtuality, nuclear mass number and squared momentum transfer is analysed in detail. Moreover, we compare the non-linear predictions with those obtained in the linear regime. Finally, we also estimate the exclusive photon, and φ production and compare with the results obtained for ρ production. Our results demonstrate that the analysis of diffractive ρ production in future electron-ion colliders will be important in understanding the non-linear QCD dynamics.

  • Change of shell structure and magnetic moments of odd-N deformed nuclei towards the neutron drip line
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 37:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Examples of the change of neutron shell structure in both weakly bound and resonant neutron one-particle levels in nuclei towards the neutron drip line are exhibited. It is shown that the shell-structure change due to the weak binding may lead to the deformation of those nuclei with the neutron numbers N approximate to 8, 20, 28 and 40, which are known to be magic numbers in stable nuclei. Nuclei in the 'island of inversion' are most easily and in a simple manner understood in terms of deformation. As an example of spectroscopic properties other than single-particle energies, magnetic moments of some weakly bound possibly deformed odd-N nuclei with neutron numbers close to those traditional magic numbers are given, which are calculated using the wavefunction of the last odd particle in deformed Woods-Saxon potentials.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 32:8, s. 1105-1119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A simplified model of the Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov (HFB) equation with surface-type or volume-type pairing is solved in coordinate space with the correct asymptotic boundary conditions. By using the resulting HFB wavefunctions, the low-energy quadrupole (L = 2) response function is studied for the system with weakly bound s and d neutrons. As the binding energy of the neutrons becomes small or approaches zero, the discrete solutions of the HFB equation disappear. Then, without any further correlation ( for example, random phase approximation ( RPA) correlation), the threshold quadrupole response becomes broader and moves toward very low excitation energies, while the total strength increases very rapidly. The important role of the continuum character of the upper component u(lj) (r) of the HFB s(1/2) wavefunction in the increasing strength is pointed out. The large and broad quadrupole response with a very low peak energy is expected for neutron drip line nuclei with N approximate to 56 and Z approximate to 28, of which both the neutron 2d(5/2) and 3s(1/2) orbits may be weakly bound in the Hartree-Fock (HF) potential.

The v4 of all these identified particles have been found to scale with the number of constituent quarks and all these particles have a similar v4/v22 ratio which is close to 0.9. The scaling behavior of v2 is studied at high pT and a deviation from the universal scaling is observed for transverse kinetic energy (KET/nq) higher than 1 GeV.

    • We present azimuthal anisotropy measurements in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at and 200 GeV. Comparison between reaction plane and cumulant v2 measurements in Au+Au collisions at GeV shows that non-flow contributions, originating mainly from jets, influence the extracted v2 for pT 3.5 GeV/c. Number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling of v2, when studied as a function of transverse kinetic energy KET, is seen to hold for Au+Au collisions at and 200 GeV and for Cu+Cu collisions at GeV for KET 1 GeV. Differential hexadecupole flow v4 seems to exhibit scaling with integral v2 for centrality ≤40% as has been observed for differential v2.

In particular we report on recent results using the CCFM evolution implemented in the SMALLX and CASCADE program concerning the importance of the so-called consistency constraint, and compare with the linked dipole chain model implemented in the LDC program. We point out some potential problems with the resolved virtual photon approach to small-x final states. Special attention is drawn to the comparison with measured visible cross sections. The visible measured cross sections at HERA are compared to the hadron level Monte Carlo generator CASCADE.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 41:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in the Rh-99 nucleus were populated using the fusion-evaporation reaction As-75(Si-28,2p2n) at E-lab = 120 MeV and the de-excitations were investigated through in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic techniques using the INGA spectrometer consisting of 18 clover detectors. The observed band structures are discussed in the framework of tilted axis cranking shell-model calculations. Level structures at low energies are identified as resulting from the rotational bands based on the pi p(1/2) and pi g(9/2) configurations. The Delta I = 1 coupled bands are observed at higher excitation energies and have been interpreted as based on the pi g(9/2) circle times nu g(7/2) circle times nu d(5/2), pi p(1/2) circle times nu h(11/2) circle times nu d(5/2) and pi g(9/2) circle times nu h(11/2) circle times nu g(7/2) configurations. Calculations based on cranked Nilsson- Strutinsky (CNS) formalism have been performed to interpret the favoured states with I-pi = (41/2(-), 43/2(-)) and (51/2(-), 53/2(-)) as maximal spin aligned states built on the valence space nu(d(5/2)g(7/2))(15/2)(3), (17/2)(h(11/2))(11/2)(1) configuration combined with the fully-aligned pi(g(9/2))(25/2)(5) configuration and the pi(g(9/2))(15/2)(5) configuration with one anti-aligned g(9/2) proton, respectively.

  • PHENIX measurements of 3D emission source function in Au-Au collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A state-of-the-art 3D source imaging technique is used to extract the 3D two-pion source function in central and mid-central Au+Au collisions at GeV. The source function indicates a previously unresolved non-Gaussian tail in the directions of the pion pair transverse momentum (out) and along the beam (long). Model comparisons give robust estimates for several characteristics of the emission source, including its transverse size, mean proper breakup time τ and emission duration Δτ. These estimates point to significant relative emission times which could result from a crossover phase transition.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultra-fast time-delayed techniques have been recently applied in a number of studies where exotic nuclei were identified using advanced selection techniques. These include large Compton-suppressed Ge arrays, in-flight separators or recoil separators. Some of the new results are discussed in this presentation. Besides the results for Mg-32 and Pd-96, they include the first determination of the half-life of the 8(+) state in Ge-80, T-1/2 = 2.95(6) ns, and significantly more precise results for Mn-51 (3680 keV level) and V-48 (421 keV level), T-1/2 = 1760(40) ps and T-1/2.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With a centre-of-mass energy of 5.5 TeV per nucleon, Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC are expected to provide a copious yield of heavy quarks. In this paper, an overview of the ALICE perspectives for heavy flavour physics will be presented. The ALICE experiment will detect quarkonia both in the e+e− and in the μ+μ− decay channels. Open heavy flavoured hadrons will be studied in the semileptonic decay channels at both central and forward rapidities. In addition, exclusive reconstruction of selected hadronic decay modes of charmed hadrons will be possible in the central rapidity region (|η| < 0.9).

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comparison of two-particle correlations in heavy-ion collisions with measurements in proton collisions shows strong modification of the correlation shape and particle yields. Two new structures are created; both extended in Δη, one centered at Δ = 0 ('ridge') and the other occurring at Δ π ± 1.1 ('shoulder'). In these proceedings, we describe the measurements of these structures that show consistency with a scenario of parton–medium interaction and response. We discuss a new analysis with improved resolution in selections on the angle of trigger particles relative to the reaction plane. New measurements of the centrality and pT dependences of the structures raise the possibility that the same production mechanism may give rise to both phenomena.

  • Onset of color decoherence for soft gluon radiation in a medium
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 38:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on recent studies of the phenomenon of color decoherence in jets in QCD media. The effect is most clearly observed in the radiation pattern of a quark-antiquark antenna, created in the same quantum state, traversing a dense color deconfined plasma. Multiple scattering with the medium color charges gradually destroys the coherence of the antenna. In the limit of opaque media, this ultimately leads to independent radiation off the antenna constituents. Accordingly, radiation off the total charge vanishes implying a memory loss effect induced by the medium.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured and ω meson production in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions for GeV at mid-rapidity. Systematic measurements of light vector mesons for several decay channels provide information about properties of the strongly interacting matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We present transverse momentum spectra and nuclear modification factors for and ω mesons. Transverse momentum spectra are compared among different decay channels to discuss yield modification which results from mass modification in the hot medium. We compare the nuclear modification factors of various mesons and discuss differences of their suppression patterns.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This biennial Review summarizes much of particle physics. Using data from previous editions, plus 2158 new measurements from 551 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We also summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as Higgs bosons, heavy neutrinos, and supersymmetric particles. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as the Standard Model, particle detectors, probability, and statistics. Among the 108 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised including those on neutrino mass, mixing, and oscillations, QCD, top quark, CKM quark-mixing matrix, V-ud & V-us, V-cb & V-ub, fragmentation functions, particle detectors for accelerator and non-accelerator physics, magnetic monopoles, cosmological parameters, and big bang cosmology. A booklet is available containing the Summary Tables and abbreviated versions of some of the other sections of this full Review. All tables, listings, and reviews (and errata) are also available on the Particle Data Group website: http://pdg.1b1.gov.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 35:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Direct photons are a powerful probe to study the property of quark–gluon plasma (QGP) in high energy heavy-ion collisions. In non-central collisions, the anisotropy of the collision region produces the different pressure gradients and particle density that results in different anisotropy of particle emission, depending on the production processes of photons. Therefore, an azimuthal anisotropy parameter v2 is a powerful tool to explore the source of direct photons. We report on the latest direct photon analysis of the nuclear modification factor in and 62.4 GeV Au + Au collisions, and v2 at high pT in 200 GeV Au + Au collisions at RHIC-PHENIX (Run4). We also present the analysis status, using a larger statistics and better reaction plane information from a new detector available from RHIC Run7 data.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The J/ψ is considered to be among the most important probes for the deconfined quark–gluon plasma (QGP) created by relativistic heavy-ion collisions. While the J/ψ is thought to dissociate in the QGP by Debye color screening, there are competing effects from cold nuclear matter (CNM), feed-downs from excited charmonia (χc and ψ') and bottom quarks, and regeneration from uncorrelated charm quarks. Measurements that can provide information to disentangle these effects are presented in this paper.

    • Correlations between two high-pT hadrons provide information on how partons lose energy as they travel through the dense plasma formed at RHIC. To vary the path length partons travel, we measure the back-to-back jets in the AA collision of centrality and reaction-plane dependence, in addition to '2+1' particle correlations, and compare with p+p results.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899. ; 28:10, s. 2617-2625
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nucleus Se-70 was studied using the Ca-40(Ca-40, 2alpha2p) reaction at a beam energy of 185 MeV. Gamma rays were measured with the EUROBALL III spectrometer. The known positive-parity bands have been extended and one new band of positive parity and two of negative parity have been identified. These bands are interpreted in terms of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky approach. Calculations suggest that the two negative-parity bands, which have the same signature, are both based on a configuration with two protons and three neutrons lifted from the fp shell to the g(9/2) orbital, but at different nuclear shapes. This represents a shape coexistence at high spin.

    • The ALICE experiment will start recording data in 2008. The capabilities of the ALICE experiment for measuring anisotropic flow have been investigated using simulations. The results are discussed both for elliptic flow in a wide rapidity region using different detector sub-systems and for directed flow using the zero degree calorimeter. Feasibility of measuring any anisotropic emission of J/ψ is also presented.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the first three years of the physics program at the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) a picture was established in which the suppression of hadrons at high transverse momenta (pT) in central Au+Au collisions is explained by energy loss of quark and gluon jets in a medium of high color-charge density. Measurements of single-particle spectra for a smaller nucleus (Cu), for different center-of-mass energies and with higher statistics were performed in the subsequent years and are used to test predictions and assumptions of jet quenching models in more detail. The measurements presented here are consistent with a parton energy loss scenario so that these models can be used to relate the observed suppression to properties of the created medium.

  • Beyond band termination in Er-157 and the search for wobbling excitations in strongly deformed Hf-174
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 31:10, s. 1735-1740
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin terminating bands in heavy nuclei were first identified in nuclei around Er-158(90). While examples of special terminating states have been identified in a number of erbium isotopes, almost nothing is known about the states lying beyond band termination. In the present work the high-spin structure of Er-157 has been studied using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The subject of triaxial superdeformation and 'wobbling' modes in Lu nuclei has rightly attracted a great deal of attention. Very recently, four strongly or superdeformed (SD) sequences have been observed in Hf-174 and ultimate cranker calculations predict, such structures may have significant triaxial deformation. We have performed two experiments in an attempt to verify the possible triaxial nature of these bands. A lifetime measurement was performed to confirm the large (and similar) deformation of the bands. In addition, a high-statistics, thin-target experiment was run to search for linking transitions between the SD bands and possible wobbling modes.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899. ; 28:6, s. 1415-1431
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in the neutron-deficient isotope Cd-104 were populated using the Cr-50(Ni-58,4p)Cd-104 reaction at a beam energy of 250 MeV The level scheme has been extended using triple gamma-ray coincidences to a spin of 29h and an excitation energy of 18.2 MeV. Several collective structures involving the excitation of h(11/2) neutrons have been observed to spins approaching 30h. The high-spin structure has been compared to the results of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.
