  • Video Feedback Intervention With Children: A Systematic review
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Research on Social Work Practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 28:6, s. 682-695
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Present a systematic analysis of the outcome research concerning video feedback (VF) programs. Method: Twenty- nine studies published between 1990 and 2014 were examined. They focused on children 0–12 years old and had at least one control group. Results: VF programs were similar in design, with interventions focusing on parental and child behavior, parental sensitivity and attachment. In 41% of the measurements, the program effects were moderate or large in favor of the intervention groups, particularly regarding maternal sensitivity and children’s behavior. Components of the VF programs were also examined. Two general problems emerged: lack of transparency/specificity of many programs with respect to the components, and het- erogeneity among instruments used for measurement. Conclusions: Future research should focus on articulating intervention components and a standardized approach to measurement. This would facilitate comparisons of approaches and increase the possibility of implementing VF programs with fidelity in different professional settings.

  • Interventions in Foster Family Care: A Systematic Review
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 30:1, s. 3-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Foster family care is associated with adverse short- and long-term consequences for the child. A systematic review was conducted on interventions for foster children and foster careers. Method: A comprehensive search process was used to find eligible interventions evaluated in randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental studies. The quality of studies was assessed with GRADE, and effects were synthesized using meta-analytic methods. Results: In all, 28 publications of 18 interventions, including 5,357 children, were identified. Only three specific interventions had sufficient confidence of evidence. No study had examined tools for foster parent selection nor had evaluated preservice programs related to outcomes. Discussion: These analyses provide new insights and hope into the field of systematic interventions in foster care. The overall results indicate that it is possible to improve eight outcomes but cannot point out which programs are superior. Ethically, social care organizations should systematically collect knowledge about effects and side effects.

  • Effectiveness of Sweden's Contact Family/Person Program for older children
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 25:2, s. 190-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To estimate the impacts of Sweden’s Contact Family/Person Program (CFPP) for older children on participants’ long-term outcomes related to mental health problems, illicit drug use, public welfare receipt, placement in out-of-home care, educational achievement, and offending. Method: We analyzed longitudinal register data on more than 1,000,000 individuals born between 1973 and 1984, including 6,386 individuals who entered CFPP at 10–13 years of age, with a follow-up until 2008. The program impact was estimated by means of propensity score matching. Results: Outcomes for those who had received the intervention were not better than that for matched peers who did not receive the intervention. Conclusions: The results did not find support for CFPP effectiveness in reducing risks of compromised long-term development in older children.

  • Facilitating Personal Recovery Through Mindfulness-Based Intervention Among People With Mental Illness
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 33:8, s. 827-848
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This pre-pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) assessed a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI, “REMIND1.0”) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Twenty mental health service users were allocated to either 8 weekly mixed-mode MBI (n = 10) or treatment-as-usual (TAU) (n = 10).Results: There were significant interactions between group and time (baseline T0, post-intervention T1, and 1-month follow-up T2) across all quantitative outcomes (personal recovery, trait mindfulness, self-compassion, resilience, moods, quality of life, and general health). The main themes that emerged from qualitative interviews at T1 are previous experience with MBIs, features of current MBI, and benefits of personal recovery and at T2 are recollection of MBI content, maintaining regular practice after MBI, and retained benefits of personal recovery. Conclusions: The current MBI is acceptable, feasible, and potentially effective in facilitating personal recovery.

  • Computer-based simulations in social work education : A scoping review
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 34:1, s. 41-53
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simulation-based learning is important in social work education. Most common is human-based simulations. In recent years, computer-based simulations have emerged as alternative. A question is if computer-based simulations differ from human-based, are similar abilities, that is, competence, trained when the simulation is computer-based?Purpose: Survey the international experiences of using computer-based simulations in social work education.Method: A five step scoping review. Databases focused on educational issues and social work was searched (Eric, Sociological Abstracts, Web of Science, Scopus). Sixteen publications were included. Results: Five different didactic categories of computer-based simulations were identified. The most common use of computer-based simulations is to practice student's procedural competence, and in lesser extent to enhance students’ meta-competence. Feedback and reflection are central for computer-based simulation, as for human-based simulations. Conclusion: The study shows a didactic field under development and that computer-based simulations provide opportunities to train self-reflection and critical thinking in social work education.

  • Family-Based Intervention for Substance Using Parents : Experiences and Resource Use
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 33:7, s. 810-821
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The study aimed to assess families? resource use and to explore parents? experiences of the Sofia model, a family-based intervention for parents with substance use disorder (SUD). Methods: Interviews were conducted with 14 parents. Data were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. The resource use assessment was estimated based on data for 40 families referred to the Sofia model and 30 reference families. Results: Parents described difficulties accessing family support and differences in received services in the Sofia model. The intervention lacked focus on the children. Families? communication regarding substance use did not increase. Resource use estimations indicated larger use of services by families in the Sofie model, but little co-parent and child-specific support. Conclusions: The intervention failed its aim to focus on the children, and enhance communication about SUD. Parents voiced a need for more long-term comprehensive support for their children and themselves.

  • Psychometric Properties of the HOME Inventory Using Rasch Analysis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 24:2, s. 235-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesThe aim of this pilot study was to explore psychometric properties of two versions of the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment Inventory in a Swedish social service sample.MethodSocial workers employed at 22 Swedish child protections agencies participated in the data collection. Both classic test theory approaches and Rasch analysis were used. Seventy-five (46 double) protocols of the Early Childhood version and 65 (43 double) protocols of the Middle Childhood version were obtained.ResultsThe interobserver reliability and Rasch reliability displayed acceptable results. Targeting was satisfying for the middle and more adequate home environments. However, there were mixed results concerning model fit.ConclusionThe scores may be used to identify families with inadequate home environments where children may be at risk.

  • Effects of Psychosocial Interventions for People With Intellectual Disabilities and Mental Health Problems : A Survey of Systematic Reviews
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 19:3, s. 281-290
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to provide a survey of systematic reviews that have evaluated the effects of psychosocial interventions for adult people with intellectual disabilities and/or an autistic syndrome with concurrent mental health problems. Reviews for inclusion were identified through searches of 10 electronic databases. The authors found that 3 out of 126 published reviews met the inclusion criteria for interventions, population, and being considered a systematic review. The results imply a weak scientific support for behavioral therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and some forms of integrated care and support. However, the primary studies included in the reviews have several methodological shortcomings. The results suggest future research initiatives in the direction of more effectiveness studies of good quality and reproduction of high-quality systematic reviews.

  • From “What Works” to “Why it Works” – From a Humean to an Aristotelian Understanding of Causality
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 33:6, s. 686-694
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Authors of this theoretical article are questioning Hume's view on causality by arguing for Aristotle’s pluralistic view as an alternative strategy for social work research and practice. Methods: Aristotle's notion of causality is applied to discuss its relevance, and then tested on a real case, thereby illustrating how it can contribute to explain why something works. Results: Different types of causes can reveal characteristics that are preconditional for professional's and service user's mutual roles in enhancing outcomes. They can further reveal the architecture of the intervention; the underlying processes for actions to reach a desired goal. Discussion: To deliver knowledge of relevance in social work, one needs to explain the results of an intervention through causal analysis as well as understanding the content and processes of it. Aristotle's forms of causality make it possible to take the contextual historicism of social phenomenon into consideration and give knowledge beyond effects. © The Author(s) 2023.

  • Outcomes for Treatment of Hypersexual Behavior Provided by Specialized Social Welfare Units
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 29:1, s. 103-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study explores outcomes of treatment provided by specialized units within the social welfare sector in Sweden to clients seeking help with hypersexual behavior.  Method: The participants were 27 males and 1 female (M . 40.3 years) who sought help from one of the three specialized units within social welfare in Sweden. A pretest–posttest group design was used to assess changes after treatment. Quantitative data were collected through interviews and self-report forms.  Results: At posttreatment stage (on average a 10-month follow-up), mental health was significantly improved and hypersexual behavior reportedly reduced. The treatment at the specialized units appeared to help the clients.  Conclusions: The specialized units seemed to deliver favorable service without shaming and stigmatizing participants. As this study can be considered a pilot study, it needs to be replicated.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 32:3, s. 328-344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim was to test whether dynamic criminogenic risk factors change after participation in a new cognitive-behavioral treatment program adhering to the Risk-Need-Responsivity (RNR) model, within a group of adult men convicted of a sexual offense in Sweden. Methods: Three psychometric tests from approximately 26 participants were completed. Therapists rated 46 participants using the Therapist Rating Scale-2 (TRS-2).Results: Participants reported a significant decrease in hypersexuality, small to medium effect size, a non-significant, increased, internal locus of control, but no change regarding attachment styles, posttreatment. Therapists rated significant decrease in all treatment needs posttreatment, medium to large effect size. Conclusions: The significant reduction of several criminogenic risk factors posttreatment indicates the treatment program may reduce problems related to increased risk of recidivism, especially hypersexuality. Moreover, treatment did not appear to have negative effects, motivating further implementation. However, to evaluate the effectiveness, more research is necessary.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 15:4, s. 278-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Given the present emphasis on accountability and maintaining quality, the objective of this study was to develop, apply, and assess the reliability of a fidelity rating instrument for consumer-operated services - a promising model, but one for which fidelity criteria are not yet established. Method: Based on observations, documents, and director interviews from 31 consumer-run drop-in centers, we developed a scale measuring fidelity to pre-established criteria and rated each center on scale items. A second study examined the interrater reliability of the measure. Results: Scale scores on the 31 centers showed substantial heterogeneity on the majority of the criteria. The fidelity rating scale demonstrated satisfactory interrater reliability on most items. Conclusions: The fidelity rating instrument is ready to be used by social work researchers evaluating consumer-operated services. Furthermore, social work researchers can use similar methods with other innovative services that should be evaluated but currently lack standards and fidelity criteria.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: A challenge to implementation is management of the adaptation-fidelity dilemma or the balance between adopting an intervention with fidelity while assuring fit when transferred between contexts. A prior meta-analysis found that adapted interventions produce larger effects than novel and adopted interventions. This study attempts to replicate and expand previous findings. Methods: Meta-analysis was used to compare effects across a whole-population of Swedish outcome studies. Main and subcategories are explored. Results: The 523 studies included adapted (22%), adopted (33%), and novel (45%) interventions. The largest effect was found for adapted followed by novel and adopted interventions. Interventions in the mental health setting showed the highest effects, followed by somatic healthcare and social services. Conclusions: These results replicate and expand earlier findings. Results were stable across settings with the exception of social services. Consistent with a growing body of evidence results suggest that context is important when transferring interventions across settings.

  • Advancing Social Intervention Research Through Program Theory Reconstruction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research on Social Work Practice. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 33:6, s. 642-655
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Program theory reconstruction is an often-overlooked aspect of social intervention research. In this paper, we argue that intervention research benefits if the research design is informed by the specific intervention's program theory (i.e., the idea of how the intervention is supposed to lead to the intended outcomes). The purpose of this paper is to offer a comprehensive and accessible guide to program theory reconstruction in research on social interventions and to provide arguments as to how program theory reconstruction can be used to benefit intervention studies. First, we summarize what program theory is and its role in intervention research. Second, we provide a direct “how-to” for researchers, practitioners, and students who may be unfamiliar with the methods of program theory reconstruction but are interested in undertaking a program theory reconstruction. Finally, we conclude with how program theory reconstruction can benefit intervention research.

  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Solving individual, group, or societal problems through social intervention in practice settings is a complex task. The extent to which this end is achieved depends heavily on the effectiveness of the change strategies in use. Increased understanding of how these change strategies work to impact outcomes is at the forefront of the science of social intervention. In this special issue, we have gathered a collection of seven articles that present central issues related to program theory in social interventions developed in practice setting. Our goal is to advance the knowledge of how an understanding of theory in practice can advance social intervention research.

  • How Can Practitioners Assess the Value of Social Work Interventions?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications Inc.. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 33:6, s. 634-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In social work, practitioners are often faced with situations in which they have to choose an intervention. A fundamental ethical principle of social work practice is to minimize the risk of adverse effects caused by social services. To adhere to this principle, practitioners must be aware of the possible positive and negative effects of potential services. There are hundreds of interventions currently in use in social work. Although there are a growing number of controlled trials on social work interventions, there are only a few interventions based on research that has the highest degree of certainty, making it difficult to know how and in what way these interventions can support a person in need of assistance. This article, based in part on the experience we gained training practitioners working in Swedish social services, presents a tentative model for assessing the best available evidence comparing interventions when scientific evidence is sparse.

  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 28:5, s. 568-576
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: There is substantial evidence that poorly designed and reported research can mislead decision making in clinical care. This review investigates the methodological quality of Swedish trials of a wide array of psychological and social interventions.Method: The review includes 302 articles published in peer-reviewed journals during 1990–2014, which evaluated a psychological or social intervention; included a randomized or nonrandomized control group with a pre–post- or pre-follow-up design; and targeted individuals in order to prevent or rehabilitate from physical, psychological, or social problems. The results are based on the information reported in the articles. Results: Overall, methodological quality increased with time. However, more recent studies contained methodological deficits. For example, few had used blinded data collectors, reported power analyses, or searched for adverse events. Conclusion: The results indicate a potential risk of biased results in both older and newer trials. Possible implications for practice and research are discussed.

  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 27:3, s. 291-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To construct a needs assessment instrument for older people using a standardized terminology (International classification of functioning, disability, and health [ICF]) and assess its psychometrical properties. Method: An instrument was developed comprising questions to older people regarding their perceived care needs. The instrument's reliability, validity, and utility were tested. Forty-one social workers and 251 older people participated. Results: The questions were sufficiently unambiguous (inter-rater reliability, intraclass correlation = .60-.80); measured a person's care and service needs to a satisfactory extent (criteria validity, agreement between social workers' and older people's assessments = 72-94%); both social workers and older people considered the questions useful; and the needs of older people were documented in social records to a greater extent when the instrument was used. Conclusion: The psychometric properties of the instrument support its use by social workers to gain relevant information on elder care needs.

    • Purpose: This study investigated the utility of the risk assessment “Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth” (SAVRY) within the social services in Stockholm County, Sweden.Method: SAVRY assessments of 56 adolescents were compared to assessments guided by another instrument (Adolescent Drug Abuse Diagnosis [ADAD]; n = 38) and assessments without support of a structured method (n = 38).Results: The results showed that social workers conducting SAVRY assessments documented a significantly larger number of risk and protective factors compared to the other assessments, and these factors predicted, with a few exceptions, reoffending to a larger extent. SAVRY summary risk rating significantly predicted the occurrence of serious violent crimes (area under the curve [AUC] = .80, p < .01) and less serious violence (AUC = .70, p < .05).Conclusions: SAVRY performed at least as well in naturalistic settings as in previous studies conducted in more controlled environments. Furthermore, the SAVRY performed better than the other structured instrument (ADAD).

  • Treatment Foster Care Oregon for Delinquent Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 30:4, s. 355-367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose To examine the effects of Treatment Foster Care on youth with serious behavior problems. Method Included studies are controlled trials with high or medium quality, published between 1990 and September 2017. The control group consists of youth with serious behavior problems in group care, and the follow-up time was at least 12 months. The review also examines ethical and economic aspects. Results A total of eight controlled studies were included, consisting of 633 young people and 55 effect sizes. All studies examined the same model, Treatment Foster Care Oregon (TFCO). There is moderate certainty of evidence that TFCO reduces the risk of future criminal behavior and the number of days in locked settings. Furthermore, there is low certainty of evidence that TFCO reduces the risk of delinquent peer associations, drug use, and depression. Discussion TFCO is to be preferred to group care for youth with serious behavior problems. Ethical and economic implications are discussed.

  • Developing an Intervention to Enhance Parental Monitoring in Family Foster Care
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research on Social Work Practice. - 1049-7315. ; 33:6, s. 666-678
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To fulfill their supervision and counseling responsibilities to foster parents, social workers need an effective way to indirectly monitor foster children's mental health and learning ability within a model of tripartite parenthood. This article describes how we are developing an intervention aimed at enhancing parental monitoring as a protective factor in family foster care. Methods: Focusing on the initial parts of Fraser et al.'s stepwise model for intervention development and drawing on ongoing research, we describe the main challenges faced in developing a program theory of parental monitoring. Results: The product is a manual that can transform the agenda of counseling meetings based on the following pre-requisites: appropriate standardized instruments, a common digital platform, training social workers, and being responsive to municipal differences. Conclusion: Our experience thus far allows us to be cautiously optimistic about strengthening parental monitoring in family foster care.
