    • The PAMELA experiment is being carried out on board the Russian satellite Resurs DK1 placed in the near-earth near-polar orbit on June 15, 2006. The apparatus comprising a silicon-strip magnetic spectrometer and an electromagnetic calorimeter allows measurement of electron and positron fluxes in cosmic rays in a wide energy interval from ∼100 MeV to hundreds of GeV. The high-energy electron and positron separation technique is discussed and the data on positron-to-electron ratio in primary cosmic rays up to E ≃ 10 GeV from the 2006 - 2007 measurements are reported in this work.

    • Secondary electron and positron fluxes in the energy range from 3 MeV to 7 GeV were measured with the ARINA and PAMELA spectrometers onboard the Resurs-DK satellite launched on June 15, 2006 into an elliptical orbit with an inclination of 70.4° and an altitude of 350-600 km. It is shown that positrons dominate over electrons by a factor of up to 4-5 in the geomagnetic equator region (L < 1.2 and B > 0.25).

    • A series of experiments were carried out in the period 1995 to 2002 to study the phenomenon of light flashes (LFs) which arose in the eyes of astronauts. These experiments were made onboard the Mir orbital station (SilEye, SilEye-2) and on the Russian segment of the International Space Station (SilEye-3/Alteino). As a result of investigation it is reliably demonstrated that the majority of light flashes under conditions of a space flight are caused by nuclei of cosmic rays. Electric signals from brain, recorded during LF occurrence, were an important final result of these studies.

    • The PAMELA magnetic spectrometer was launched into a near-Earth orbit on board the Resurs-DK1 satellite in June 2006; in December 2006, it recorded the last strong solar high-energy particle event of the 23rd solar cycle. A deficit was thereafter observed in solar energetic particle events because of the lengthy solar activity minimum and the weak evolution of the next (24th) solar cycle. As a result, only a few solar events involving protons with energies of more than 100 MeV were recorded between 2010 and 1012. This work presents the preliminary results from measurements of charged particle fluxes in these events, recorded by the Pamela spectrometer.

    • The atomic structures of interstitial solid solutions O and N in V at relatively low concentrations O(N)/V = 1/16 or 1/8 are calculated using the Monte Carlo method. A combined model of long-range interaction between interstitial atoms is employed. The first 12 shells contain ab initio energies and the energies in shells 13–18 are calculated on the basis of a phenomenological model of deformation interaction. The ordered solid solutions are long-period structures with body-centered tetragonal crystal lattices and tetragonality c/a < 1.

    • Abstract: The isotopic composition of Li and Be nuclei in the 1–5 GV range of rigidities (nuclear energies of 0.1–1.5 GeV/nucleon) is analyzed using PAMELA flight data from 2006–2014 on the rigidity of detected nuclei and their velocities (time-of-flight analysis and ionization losses in the detector’s multilayer calorimeter). The new PAMELA data expand the range of energies in earlier measurements, are consistent with scarce results, and indicate correlated deviations of Li and Be isotope ratios from the GALPROP data for GCRs, which can be interpreted as evidence of contributions from several nearby local sources against the GCR background. Analysis of precision AMS-02 data on the spectra of positrons, antiprotons, and secondary nuclei of Li, Be, and B also indicates correlated increases in intensity at rigidities of ~50–1000 GV, which could also be due to local sources. The contribution from local sources against the GCR background is estimated at levels of tens of percents for rigidities of 1–5 GV and several percent at rigidities of 50–1000 GV.

    • The first results from measuring the spectra of solar neutrons with energies of ~10–1000 MeV in the solar flares of 2006–2015 observed by the PAMELA international space experiment are presented. The PAMELA neutron detector with 3He counters and a moderator with an area of 0.18 m2 allows us to estimate the flux of solar neutrons during solar flares. Solar neutrons with energies of ~10–1000 MeV likely occurred in 21 out of the 24 analyzed flares of 2006–2015.

    • Ab initio calculations of pair nitrogen interstitials interaction in the first 12 coordination shells of a Nb crystal lattice are performed using the Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP), and chemical and strain-induced contributions are analyzed. It is shown that rapidly decreasing chemical repulsion prevails in the nearest coordination shells, whereas strain-induced (elastic) interaction makes the main contribution in more distant shells.

    • Aspects of steel sheet perforation are studied experimentally. Calculations show that the mechanisms of thin sheet perforation change as the focal spot size is increased at a constant laser power. If the spot is small, the melt is removed and the film is disrupted by steel boiling in the spot center. With larger spots, the melt is removed by the force of gravity. The hole diameter grows along with the focal spot size and sheet thickness and is reduced upon an increase in laser power.

  • Measuring independent yields of fission products using a penning trap

    • A new method for determining independent fission products is used in an experiment at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The method combines the chemical universality of the ion guide technique and the unique properties of the Penning trap. A beam of charged particles is formed by stopping fission products in gaseous helium. The Penning trap is employed as a highly accurate filter to identify particles by their mass. The yields of fission products are determined by the ion count downstream of the trap. The setup’s mass resolving power is on the order of 105 with a radio frequency excitation time of 400 ms. Such high mass resolution occasionally allows us not only to separate nuclides but to separate the isomeric and ground states of nuclei as well. Independent yields of fission products are measured in the fission reaction of the 232Th isotope by protons with an energy of 25 MeV. A short description of the method ae nd soexperimental data are supplememnted by the results fro theoretical calculations.

The thickness of the calorimeter is 0.6 nuclear interaction lengths. In this work, the experimental results for the measured energy spectra of the protons and helium nuclei of cosmic rays with energies above 50 GeV are presented.

    • The available data on the energy spectra of electrons, protons, and helium nuclei in the high-energy region are fragmentary, a situation made worse by their scarcity. Due to limitations imposed on the use of the magnetic spectrometer in the PAMELA satellite experiment, the calorimeter must be used for measurements performed in the high-energy region. The processing of experimental data accumulated in more than eight years of measurements with the calorimeter, neutron detector, and scintillation counters allows the spectra of high-energy particles to be obtained, greatly expanding our understanding of the nature of primary cosmic rays.

The 3s spectra of the manganese atoms in MnII, MnIII, and MnIV valent states were calculated within the isolatedion approximation. The relationship between the characteristics of the Mn3s spectra and the magnetic moments of the manganese ions in the complexes is discussed.

    • This work presents the results of measuring the deuteron spectrum of Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) with the PAMELA experiment. The PAMELA is an international experiment. In addition, the experimental setup allows the detection of deuterons and the reconstruction of their spectra at low energies. Cosmic ray deuteron spectrum and the deuteron-proton ratio measured in the PAMELA experiment in the energy range of 50-650 MeV/nucleon are presented below.

    • The preliminary results from measurements of deuteron fluxes in galactic cosmic rays (GCR) in the vicinity of the Earth in 2006–2009 are presented. The results are obtained by analyzing data from the PAMELA experiment aboard the Resurs DK-1 satellite. High-precision detection instruments provided an opportunity to identify GCR deuterons and measure their spectrum in the energy interval of 90–650MeV/nucleon. Spectra averaged over six-month intervals from the summer of 2006 to the summer of 2009 (the solar activity minimum) are presented. The influence of solar modulation on the observed spectrum is clearly seen in the results.

    • We present the energy spectra of protons and helium nuclei of cosmic rays obtained in the PAMELA experiment on board the satellite RESURS-DK1 for the period from August 2006 to December 2009. The spectra were measured in the energy range of 100 MeV/nucleon to 100 GeV/nucleon using a magnetic spectrometer within the apparatus. Variations in the solar modulation potential for protons and helium nuclei were calculated on the basis of the monthly mean particle fluxes. A force field model was used to compare the modulation with measurements from balloon experiments, and with measurements from a network of neutron monitors.

    • A method for antiproton selection against a background of electrons, based on a mathematical model of data classification using variations in interparticle interaction in a calorimeter, and a method for excluding events accompanied by scattering in the inner detectors of a tracking system (which result in errors in the measured trajectory's curvature and charge sign) from analysis are discussed in this paper. Antiproton spectra and antiproton/proton flux ratio at energies of 0.06 to 350 GeV with statistics of events surpassing those in [1] are obtained. The results can be used to create models for the generation and distribution of particles in the Galaxy, and for searching and studying the nature of hypothetical dark matter particles.

    • The generally accepted theory explaining the observed cosmological baryon asymmetry involves mechanisms of baryosynthesis that generate asymmetry in an initially baryon symmetric Universe. Due to the possible inhomogeneous spatial nature of such mechanisms, antimatter domains could arise in the Universe. This hypothesis can be tested by the direct measurement of fluxes of antinuclei in cosmic rays. Searching for antihelium nuclei is therefore among the objectives of the PAMELA experiment. We analyzed data from August 2006 to December 2009 and obtained a preliminary value for the upper limit of the antihelium/helium flux ratio that could lead to some restrictions on the existing theoretical models of the production and propagation of antimatter in the Galaxy.

In this work, we present data on the electron and positron energy spectra in primary cosmic rays, obtained between June 2006 and December 2008.

    • The PAMELA experiment has been under way aboard the Resurs DK-1 satellite since June 2006. The results have revealed an increase in the ratio of the positron intensity to the total electron and positron intensity at energies in excess of 10 GeV. This increase suggests an additional source of cosmic rays that is associated with either some astrophysical objects (e.g., pulsars) or the probable annihilation of particles of dark matter. Local positron sources can produce notable anisotropy in their flux. The results from the search for anisotropy of positrons and electrons in the events detected by the PAMELA experiment in the 2006–2013 timeframe are described in detail in this work.

    • Fluxes of electrons and positrons with energies above ~100 MeV in the near-Earth space are measured with the PAMELA magnetic spectrometer aboard the Resurs DK-1 satellite launched on June 15, 2006, into a quasipolar orbit with an altitude of 350–600 km and an inclination of 70°. Calculating the trajectories of detected electrons and positrons in the magnetosphere of the Earth allows us to determine their origin and isolate particles produced during interaction between cosmic rays and the residual atmosphere. Spatial distributions of albedo, quasitrapped, and trapped (in the radiation belt) positrons and electrons are presented. The ratio of positron and electron fluxes suggests that the fluxes of trapped particles of the radiation belt and quasitrapped secondary particles have different mechanisms of formation.

    • The hyperspherical harmonics approach is especially suited to studies of true three-body decays. Reducing the hyperspherical equations set to a single-channel approximation provides the basis for using the standard quasi-classical expression for calculating resonance widths. It is shown that the quasi-classical approach is itself quite precise when applied to the three-body single-channel effective potentials. However, reduction to the single-channel formalism seems to be unacceptable, as it leads to considerable overestimation of decay widths.

    • The development of the GAMMA-400 γ-ray telescope continues. The GAMMA-400 is designed to measure fluxes of γ-rays and the electron-positron cosmic-ray component possibly associated with annihilation or decay of dark matter particles; and to search for and study in detail discrete γ-ray sources, to measure the energy spectra of Galactic and extragalactic diffuse γ-rays, and to study γ-ray bursts and γ-rays from the active Sun. The energy range for measuring γ-rays and electrons (positrons) is from 100 MeV to 3000 GeV. For 100-GeV γ-rays, the γ-ray telescope has an angular resolution of ∼0.01°, an energy resolution of ∼1%, and a proton rejection factor of ∼5 × 105. The GAMMA-400 will be installed onboard the Russian Space Observatory.

    • The existence of trapped antiprotons in the Earth's inner radiation belt has been theoretically predicted, but not observed. We present a procedure for antiproton selection and the observation results from the PAMELA space experiment measurements. The PAMELA magnetic spectrometer ensures reliable identification of particles and charge signs, value determination, and energy measurement, thus enabling us to experimentally establish the existence of antiprotons trapped in the Earth's inner radiation belt.

    • We studied the influence of fullerenes on the properties of molecular magnets of the family of oxocarboxylate clusters of Mn12. A strong asymmetry in the hysteresis loop was observed for the first time. As opposed to the well-known effect of the displacement of a hysteresis loop along the magnetic field axis (the phenomenon of exchange bias), the observed effect of magnetic memory resides in the displacement along the vertical axis.
