  • Dierential diagnosis of dementia in an argumentation framework
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - New York : IOS Press. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 17:4, s. 387-394
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to provide support for differential diagnosis of dementia in medical practice, logical specification of a single clinical guideline is not sufficient. Therefore, a synthesis guideline has been formalized using core features from selected clinical guidelines which report high sensitivity, using conventional two-valued propositional logic. This guideline is sufficient for capturing the major part of typical cases of patients in the domain. However, in order to provide support in atypical cases, additional clinical guidelines are needed in the reasoning process which report higher specificity but are pervaded with more uncertainty. In order to capture the different levels of significance in evidence expressed in the clinical guidelines an argumentation framework based on a many-valued propositional logic is adapted for the domain. This is accomplished in a context of transformations between logics. Formal frameworks will be given as well as a clinical case study where the sets of values that are attached to arguments correspond to the vocabulary used in the clinical guidelines, as well as the functions which compute the significance.

  • Arabic named entity recognition in social media based on BiLSTM-CRF using an attention mechanism
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - : IOS Press. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 42:6, s. 5427-5436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a vitally important task of Natural Language Processing (NLP), which aims at finding named entities in natural language text and classifying them into predefined categories such as persons (PER), places (LOC), organizations (ORG), and so on. In the Arabic context, the current NER approaches based on deep learning are mainly based on word embedding or character-level embedding as input. However, using a single granularity representation has problems with out-of-vocabulary (OOV), word embedding errors, and relatively simple semantic content. This paper presents a multi-headed self-attention mechanism implemented in the BiLSTM-CRF neural network structure to recognize Arabic named entities on social media using two embeddings. Unlike other state-of-the-art approaches, this approach combines character and word embedding at the embedding layer, and the attention mechanism calculates the similarity over the entire sequence of characters and captures local context information. The proposed approach better recognized NEs in Dialect Arabic, reaching an F1 value of 74.15% on Darwish's dataset (a publicly available Arabic NER benchmark for social media). According to our knowledge, our findings outperform the current state-of-the-art models for Arabic Named Entity Recognition on social media.

  • Towards control in agents for human behavior change : an autism case
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper introduces an automated decision-making framework for providing controlled agent behavior in systems dealing with human behavior-change. Controlled behavior in such settings is important in order to reduce unexpected side-effects of a system’s actions. The general structure of the framework is based on a psychological theory, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), capturing causes to human motivational states, which enables reasoning about dynamics of human motivation. The framework consists of two main components: 1) an ontological knowledge-base that models an individual’s behavioral challenges to infer motivation states and 2) a transition system that, in a given motivation state, decides on motivational support, resulting in transitions between motivational states. The system generates plans (sequences of actions) for an agent to facilitate behavior change. A particular use-case is modeled regarding children with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) who commonly experience difficulties in everyday social situations. An evaluation of a proof-of-concept prototype is performed that presents consistencies between ASC experts’ suggestions and plans generated by the system.

  • A linguistic approach to concurrent design
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 28:5, s. 1985-2001
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper outlines a concurrent design methodology for multidisciplinary systems, which employs tools of fuzzy theory for the tradeoff in the design space. This methodology enhances communication between designers from various disciplines through introducing the universal notion of satisfaction and expressing the behaviour of multidisciplinary systems using the notion of energy. It employs fuzzy rule-bases, membership functions and parametric connectives in fuzzy logic to formalize subjective aspects of design, resulting in a two-phase simplification of the multi-objective constrained optimization of a design process. The methodology attempts to find a pareto-optimal solution for the design problem. In the primary phase of the methodology, a fuzzy-logic model is utilized to identify a region in the design space that contains the pareto-optimal design state, and a proper initial state is suggested for the optimization in the secondary phase, where the pareto-optimal solution is found. Finally, the impact of the designer's subjective attitude on the design is adjusted based on a system performance by utilizing an energy-based model of multidisciplinary systems. As an application, it is shown that the design of a five-degree-of-freedom industrial robot manipulator can be enhanced by using the methodology.

  • People recognition by mobile robots
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 15:1, s. 21-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the problem of detecting and identifying persons with a mobile robot, by sensory fusion of thermal and colour vision information. In the proposed system, people are first detected with a thermal camera, using image analysis techniques to segment the persons in the thermal images. This information is then used to segment the corresponding regions of the colour images, using an affine transformation to solve the image correspondence between the two cameras. After segmentation, the region of the image containing a person is further divided into regions corresponding to the person's head, torso and legs. Temperature and colour features are then extracted from each region for input to a pattern recognition system. Three alternative classfication methods were investigated in experiments with a moving mobile robot and moving persons in an office environment. The best identification performance was obtained with a dynamic recognition method based on a Bayes classifier, which takes into account evidence accumulated in a sequence of images.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - : IOS Press. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 17:4, s. 335-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Any autonomous system embedded in a dynamic and changing environment must be able to create qualitative knowledge and object structures representing aspects of its environment on the fly from raw or preprocessed sensor data in order to reason qualitatively about the environment and to supply such state information to other nodes in the distributed network in which it is embedded. These structures must be managed and made accessible to deliberative and reactive functionalities whose successful operation is dependent on being situationally aware of the changes in both the robotic agent's embedding and internal environments. DyKnow is a knowledge processing middleware framework which provides a set of functionalities for contextually creating, storing, accessing and processing such structures. The framework is implemented and has been deployed as part of a deliberative/reactive architecture for an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle. The architecture itself is distributed and uses real-time CORBA as a communications infrastructure. We describe the system and show how it can be used to create more abstract entity and state representations of the world which can then be used for situation awareness by an unmanned aerial vehicle in achieving mission goals. We also show that the framework is a working instantiation of many aspects of the JDL data fusion model.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems. - 1875-8967 .- 1064-1246. ; 34:2, s. 1161-1167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the development of vehicle active safety technology and its combination with passive safety technologies, there is a need for an updated tool to assess the performance of vehicle safety systems in both the in-crash and pre-crash phases. Consequently, developing human body models with active muscles is critical to achieve improved bio-fidelity simulation results to evaluate the effects of safety systems. In the present study, an innovative human active muscle control model based on a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) controller was developed, and the active muscle response was modelled using a feedback control strategy with the BPNN algorithm implemented in a human head and neck Sim Mechanics model. The BPNN controller was used to dynamically control the muscle activation level, the most complicated and essential factor in active muscle force calculation based on the Hill equation. Then, the active muscle control model was evaluated by simulating the human response in volunteer sled tests. The results validated the proposed active muscle control method as successful and easily realized. Achieving muscle active control would further improve the bio-fidelity of the human body model.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Telco systems usually run large-scale, centralized key management systems. However, centralized approaches based on conventional public key encryption like RSA raise problems such as key escrow, secure channel to delivery key, and third-party query as well as single point of failure. To address these problems, we propose both certificate-based encryption (CBE) and hierarchical certificate-based encryption (HCBE) schemes proved secure in the standard model. Compared with other schemes, our schemes are proved IND-CCA2 (Indistinguishability under Adaptive Chosen Ciphertext Attack) secure in full model, where the number of group elements is independent of the value of security parameter. As far as we know, the proposed HCBE is the first fully IND-CCA2 secure scheme with ciphetexts of constant size.

    • Socially interactive systems are embodied agents that engage in social interactions with humans. From a design perspective, these systems are built by considering a biologically inspired design (Bio-inspired) that can mimic and simulate human-like communication cues and gestures. The design of a bio-inspired system usually consists of (i) studying biological characteristics, (ii) designing a similar biological robot, and (iii) motion planning, that can mimic the biological counterpart. In this article, we present a design, development, control-strategy and verification of our socially interactive bio-inspired robot, namely - Telepresence Mechatronic Robot (TEBoT). The key contribution of our work is an embodiment of a real human-neck movements by, i) designing a mechatronic platform based on the dynamics of a real human neck and ii) capturing the real head movements through our novel single-camera based vision algorithm. Our socially interactive bio-inspired system is based on an intuitive integration-design strategy that combines computer vision based geometric head pose estimation algorithm, model based design (MBD) approach and real-time motion planning techniques. We have conducted an extensive testing to demonstrate effectiveness and robustness of our proposed system.

    • The BP neural network algorithm is used to construct a stable slope angle prediction model for open-pit mines, which can successfully predict the ultimate slope angle of the mine. At the same time, a multi-tool combination of Surpac, Madis, and Flac3D is used to create a numerical model for stable slope angle in mines. The model is used to test the final slope angle prediction structure for stable mines. Through a comprehensive analysis of the ore deposit model technology constructed by the series of realms, the economic parameters involved in the generation of realm boundaries are known, and specific primaries are pointed out with the error requirements of each parameter analyzed in the realm of series. A concrete solution is put forward to the issue of realm gap. From the point of view of the power and responsibility parameters, the series of realm production methods are analyzed, and the rapid generation methods of the realm of open-pit mine series are pointed out.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - : IOS Press. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 44:6, s. 9919-9932
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Suppliers significantly affect the effectiveness of sustainable supply chain management. Hence, it is extremely important to evaluate and select suppliers scientifically and objectively. Based on the theory of triple bottom line (economic, social, and environmental dimension) and a balanced scorecard, a measureable supplier evaluation framework in a sustainable supply chain is first formulated. Second, to reduce the defects of the single weight method, the subjective and objective weights of evaluation indicators are determined by combining the fuzzy best-worst method (BWM) and the entropy method, and then the combination weights are obtained through linear weighting. Third, the grey relational technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method is further adopted to evaluate and rank the suppliers. Finally, a case study illustrates and demonstrates the availability of the proposed supplier evaluation index system and evaluation method. Subsequently, some suggestions are proposed according to the results.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - : IOS PRESS. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 37:4, s. 4819-4826
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The occupational health and safety problems caused by indoor dust and toxic gases in industrial plants are becoming increasingly serious. Vertical push-pull ventilation can effectively control dust and toxic gases and avoid indoor environmental pollution. The velocity of the air supply hood and exhaust hood in the push-pull ventilation intelligent device directly affects the control effect of the dust and toxic gases. However, no scholar has given a reasonable ratio of the air supply and exhaust velocity of the vertical push-pull ventilation device. Therefore, this paper uses the combination of Fluent numerical simulation technology and smoke visualization experiment to explore the best ratio of the air supply and exhaust velocity in the push-pull ventilation flow field. The research shows that the traces of the wind flow obtained by numerical analysis under different k which is the ratio of the air supply and exhaust velocity is consistent with the traces of visualized smoke in the actual experiment; The optimal ratio of air supply and exhaust is k = 1.75, which can effectively guarantee the indoor environment, occupational health and work efficiency of the operators.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - : IOS Press. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 42:5, s. 4387-4398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human-aware Artificial Intelligent systems are goal directed autonomous systems that are capable of interacting, collaborating, and teaming with humans. Activity reasoning is a formal reasoning approach that aims to provide common sense reasoning capabilities to these interactive and intelligent systems. This reasoning can be done by considering evidences –which may be conflicting–related to activities a human performs. In this context, it is important to consider the temporality of such evidence in order to distinguish activities and to analyse the relations between activities. Our approach is based on formal argumentation reasoning, specifically, Timed Argumentation Frameworks (TAF), which is an appropriate technique for dealing with inconsistencies in knowledge bases. Our approach involves two steps: local selection and global selection. In the local selection, a model of the world and of the human’s mind is constructed in form of hypothetical fragments of activities (pieces of evidences) by considering a set of observations. These hypothetical fragments have two kinds of relations: a conflict relation and a temporal relation. Based on these relations, the argumentation attack notion is defined. We define two forms of attacks namely the strong and the weak attack. The former has the same characteristics of attacks in TAF whereas for the latter the TAF approach has to be extended. For determining consistent sets of hypothetical fragments, that are part of an activity or are part of a set of non-conflicting activities, extension-based argumentation semantics are applied. In the global selection, the degrees of fulfillment of activities is determined. We study some properties of our approach and apply it to a scenario where a human performs activities with different temporal relations.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humans have evolved to seek social connections, extending beyond interactions with living beings. The digitization of society has led to interactions with non-living entities, such as digital companions, aimed at supporting mental well-being. This literature review surveys the latest developments in digital companions for mental health, employing a hybrid search strategy that identified 67 relevant articles from 2014 to 2022. We identified that by the nature of the digital companions’ purposes, it is important to consider person profiles for: a) to generate both person-oriented and empathetic responses from these virtual companions, b) to keep track of the person’s conversations, activities, therapy, and progress, and c) to allow portability and compatibility between digital companions. We established a taxonomy for digital companions in the scope of mental well-being. We also identified open challenges in the scope of digital companions related to ethical, technical, and socio-technical points of view. We provided documentation about what these issues mean, and discuss possible alternatives to approach them.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are lots of line traces on the surface of the broken ends which left in the cable cutting case crime scene along the high-speed railway in China. The line traces usually present nonlinear morphological features and has strong randomness. It is not very effective when using existing image-processing and three-dimensional scanning methods to do the trace comparison, therefore, a fast algorithm based on wavelet domain feature aiming at the nonlinear line traces is put forward to make fast trace analysis and infer the criminal tools. The proposed algorithm first applies wavelet decomposition to the 1-D signals which picked up by single point laser displacement sensor to partially reduce noises. After that, the dynamic time warping is employed to do trace feature similarity matching. Finally, using linear regression machine learning algorithm based on gradient descent method to do constant iteration. The experiment results of cutting line traces sample data comparison demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the proposed algorithm. © 2019 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emerging area of intelligent unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) research has shown rapid development in recent years and offers a great number of research challenges for artificial intelligence. For both military and civil applications, there is a desire to develop more sophisticated UAV platforms where the emphasis is placed on development of intelligent capabilities. Imagine a mission scenario where a UAV is supplied with a 3D model of a region containing buildings and road structures and is instructed to fly to an arbitrary number of building structures and collect video streams of each of the building's respective facades. In this article, we describe a fully operational UAV platform which can achieve such missions autonomously. We focus on the path planner integrated with the platform which can generate collision free paths autonomously during such missions. Both probabilistic roadmap-based (PRM) and rapidly exploring random trees-based (RRT) algorithms have been used with the platform. The PRM-based path planner has been tested together with the UAV platform in an urban environment used for UAV experimentation.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 11:3-4, s. 163-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider a queueing network with two parallel heterogeneous servers. Each server has its own queue and customers arrive at each queue according to independent Poisson processes. Service times are independent and exponentially distributed. When a customer arrives at queue 1, the customer can be transferred to queue 2 by paying an assignment cost. Each customer in queue pays a holding cost per unit time. The objective is to dynamically determine the optimal assignment policy, based on the state of the system, so as to minimize the average cost. This model has policy implications for computer or communication networks. In this paper, a novel approach is presented using fuzzy control to solve the problem. Simulation shows that the approach is efficient and promising.

    • Microaggregation is an effective data-driven protection method that permits us to achieve a good trade-off between disclosure risk and information loss. In this work we propose a method for microaggregation based on fuzzy c-means, that is appropriate when there are constraints (linear constraints) on the variables that describe the data. Our method leads to results that satisfy these constraints even when the data to be masked do not satisfy them.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 10:2, s. 117-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An approach to detecting colour specks in an image taken from a pulp sample of recycled paper is presented. The task is solved through pixel-wise colour classification by an artificial neural network and post-processing based on the evidence theory. The network is trained using possibilistic target values, which are determined through a self-organising process in a 2D and 1D map of chromaticity and lightness, respectively. The problem of post-processing of a pixelwise-classified image is addressed from the point of view of the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. Each neighbour of a pixel being analysed is considered as an item of evidence supporting particular hypotheses regarding the class label of that pixel. The strength of support is defined as a function of the degree of uncertainty in class label of the neighbour, and the distance between the neighbour and the pixel being considered. The experiments performed have shown that the colour classification results correspond well with the human perception of colours of the specks.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246 .- 1875-8967. ; 17:4, s. 407-416
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fundamental to case-based reasoning is the idea that similar problems have similar solutions. The meaning of the concept of "similarity" can vary in different situations and remains an issue. Since we want to identify and retrieve truly useful or relevant cases for problem solving, the metrics of similarity must be defined suitably to reflect the utility of cases for solving a particular target problem. A framework for utility-oriented similarity modeling is developed in this paper. The main idea is to exploit a case library to obtain adequate samples of utility from pairs of cases. The task of similarity modeling then becomes the customization of the parameters in a similarity metric to minimize the discrepancy between the assessed similarity values and the utility scores desired. A new structure for similarity metrics is introduced which enables the encoding of single feature impacts and more competent approximation of case utility. Preliminary experimental results have shown that the proposed approach can be used for learning with a surprisingly small case base without the risk of over-fitting and that it yields stable system performance with variations in the threshold selected for case retrieval.

    • A lot of manual work goes into identifying a topic for an article. With a large volume of articles, the manual process can be exhausting. Our approach aims to address this issue by automatically extracting topics from the text of large numbers of articles. This approach takes into account the efficiency of the process. Based on existing N-gram analysis, our research examines how often certain words appear in documents in order to support automatic topic extraction. In order to improve efficiency, we apply custom filtering standards to our research. Additionally, delete as many noncritical or irrelevant phrases as possible. In this way, we can ensure we are selecting unique keyphrases for each article, which capture its core idea1. For our research, we chose to center on the autonomous vehicle domain, since the research is relevant to our daily lives. We have to convert the PDF versions of most of the research papers into editable types of files such as TXT. This is because most of the research papers are only in PDF format. To test our proposed idea of automating, numerous articles on robotics have been selected. Next, we evaluate our approach by comparing the result with other models.

  • Improving expressional power and validation for multilevel flow models
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246. ; 15:1, s. 61-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multilevel flow modeling (MFM) is a modeling method for complex technical systems in which the goals and functions of the system are explicitly described. MFM can be used as a basis for root cause analysis, where primary root causes are separated from consequential faults, in complex fault situations. Model representations for use in diagnostic reasoning usually describe causality, between parameters, faults, of, process states. However, the causality of a system may vary depending on details in the construction, as well as over time with the process state. One contribution of this paper is a general method of describing varying causality in a simple and efficient way. The method has been tested using multilevel flow models. Causality is visible in measurements and can be used to increase process understanding. The standard cross-correlation technique is insufficient for causality detection in industrial processes. Another contribution of this paper is a new method that can detect causality in industrial signals, and thus be used to validate the design of multilevel flow models.

  • Knowledge discovery in virtual community texts: Clustering virtual communities
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246. ; 14:1, s. 13-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Automatic knowledge discovery from texts (KDT) is proving to be a promising method for businesses today to deal with the overload of textual information. In this paper, we first explore the possibilities for KDT to enhance communication in virtual communities, and then we present a practical case study with real-life Internet data. The problem in the case study is to manage the very successful virtual communities known as 'clubs' of the largest Dutch Internet Service Provider. It is possible for anyone to start a club about any subject, resulting in over 10,000 active clubs today. At the beginning, the founder assigns the club to a predefined category. This often results in illogical or inconsistent placements, which means that interesting clubs may be hard to locate for potential new members. The ISP therefore is looking for an automated way to categorize clubs in a logical and consistent manner. The method used is the so-called bag-of-words approach, previously applied mostly to scientific texts and structured documents. Each club is described by a vector of word occurrences of all communications within that club. Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is applied to reduce the dimensionality problem prior to clustering. Clustering is done by the Within Groups Clustering method using a cosine distance measure appropriate for texts. The results show that KDT and the LSI method can successfully be applied for clustering the very volatile and unstructured textual communication on the Internet.

  • Model-based containment of process fault dissemination
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246. ; 15:1, s. 47-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past decade has witnessed a marked increase in distributed system complexity. This was driven by a maturing technology that steadily decreased the number of faults. Unfortunately these fewer faults have become exponentially more costly. It becomes mandatory to detect faults prior to taking effect on the network. Such an early detection requires a new test, detection and fault containment strategy, of which the outline and some basic ingredients are sketched here.

  • Rule-based reduction of alarm signals in industrial control
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246. ; 14:2, s. 73-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The proper handling of alarms is crucial to any automated process control. In practice, many alarms are only distractive and do not represent a potentially dangerous situation. This paper presents a methodology and a computerized tool that aims to remove such nuisance alarms, a so-called alarm cleanup. This is a general, systematic approach that takes advantage of the control system's built-in functions, and is a first step to an improved overall alarm situation. By the strong reduction of the alarm count, the efficient construction of fault diagnosis and isolation models becomes feasible. In a typical case study, the number of alarms received at the remote control room of an operational bio-fueled District Heating Plant was effectively reduced by 83%.

  • A parametrisable system for physically plausible surface inspection
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246. ; 15:1, s. 29-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Visual quality assurance techniques focus on the detection and qualification of abnormal structures in the image of an object. The features of abnormality are extracted through image mining, whereupon classification is performed on characteristic combinations. Many techniques for feature extraction have been proposed, but the feed-forward neural network is seldom utilized despite its popularity in other application areas. Based on the wide experience base, this paper shows how a multi-tier feed-forward network can be constructed to model detectable peaks using only the physical properties of the image domain. This generic architecture can easily be adapted for different applications, as in metal plate inspection and protein detection, with mean error rate below 5%.

  • Intelligent Buffer Storage System : Enabling Fast and Flexible Assembling with Industrial Robots
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246. ; 17:4, s. 367-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Production cells usually require a continuous supply of parts to be assembled. Elaborate feeding mechanisms or a system of prepared pallets on which the parts have exact positions are expensive and if a variation of the product is to be produced, the feeding mechanism or pallets must be modified. Such solutions do not provide sufficient flexibility and increase production costs. Today's requirements for smaller series and customized orders have higher requirements on production cells. In this paper we show how flexible and adaptive production can be achieved, using methods and techniques from artificial intelligence by introducing an "autonomous" production cell, integrating and managing its own local buffer storage. The production cell is able to produce a number of variants of the product with no time delay between different configurations. The storage system, designated "Floating Storage", handles the local buffer storage and guides the industrial robots to use available floor-space as storage. The system also orders parts from the main storage as the buffer storage approaches depletion. The parts arrive to the cell in standard containers and a commercially available vision system is used to locate the material. The prototype has been introduced in an assembly line at ABB.

  • Experiments with artificial haptic perception in a robotic hand
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246. ; 17:4, s. 377-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The LUCS Haptic Hand I together with a set of haptic models is the first in a series of projects aimed at studying haptic perception for building several robotic hands together with cognitive computational models of the corresponding human neurophysiology. The haptic systems have been trained and tested with a set of objects consisting of balls and cubes, and the activation in the modules corresponding to secondary somatosensory cortex is studied. The results suggest that the haptic system is capable of categorizing objects according to size, if the shapes of the objects are restricted to spheres and cubes.

  • Fault Diagnosis in Industry Using Sensor Readings and Case-Based Reasoning
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems. - 1064-1246. ; 15:1, s. 41-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fault diagnosis of industrial equipments becomes increasingly important for improving the quality of manufacturing and reducing the cost for product testing. Developing a fast and reliable diagnosis system presents a challenge issue in many complex industrial scenarios. The major difficulties therein arise from contaminated sensor readings caused by heavy background noise as well as the unavailability of experienced technicians for support. In this paper we propose a novel method for diagnosis of faults by means of case-based reasoning and signal processing. The received sensor signals are processed by wavelet analysis to filter out noise and at the same time to extract a group of related features that constitutes a reduced representation of the original signal. The derived feature vector is then forwarded to a classification component that uses case-based reasoning to recommend a fault class for the probe case. This recommendation is based on previously classified cases in a case library. Case-based diagnosis has attractive properties in that it enables reuse of past experiences whereas imposes no demand on the size of the case base. The proposed approach has been applied to fault diagnosis of industrial robots at ABB Robotics and the results of experiments are very promising.
