  • Children Placed In Out-of-Home Care as Midlife Adults : Are They Still Disadvantaged or Have They Caught Up With Their Peers?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Child Maltreatment. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-5595 .- 1552-6119. ; 22:3, s. 205-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • International research has consistently reported that children placed in out-of-home care (OHC) have poor outcomes in young adulthood. Yet, little is known about their outcomes in midlife. Using prospective data from a cohort of more than 14,000 Swedes born in 1953, of which nearly 9% have been placed in OHC, this study examines whether there is developmental continuity or discontinuity of disadvantage reaching into middle age in OHC children, compared to same-aged peers. Outcome profiles, here conceptualized as combinations of adverse outcomes related to education, economic hardship, unemployment, and mental health problems, were assessed in 1992–2008 (ages 39–55). Results indicate that having had experience of OHC was associated with 2-fold elevated odds of ending up in the most disadvantaged outcome profile, controlling for observed confounding factors. These findings suggest that experience of OHC is a strong marker for disadvantaged outcomes also in midlife.

  • Outcomes in Adulthood After Long-Term Foster Care : A Sibling Approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Child Maltreatment. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-5595 .- 1552-6119. ; 25:4, s. 383-392
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When a child is removed from their home and placed in foster care, society takes over the responsibility for that child’s well-being and development. Failure to provide a child with a nurturing upbringing may have negative consequences for the child as well as for society. Using Swedish longitudinal registry data for a national cohort sample of siblings, in which some were placed in foster care and others remained in their birth parents’ care, this study asks whether long-term foster care ensures improved life chances. Results from multilevel regression analyses of a wide range of educational, social, and health-related outcomes in mature adult age (16 outcome constructs) support a row of previous studies indicating that traditional long-term foster care does not seem to improve maltreated children’s life chances.

  • Swedish Courts’ Evaluations of Interpreter-Mediated Child Investigative Interviews
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Child Maltreatment. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-5595 .- 1552-6119. ; 28:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Children can need the help of an interpreter if they are victims of a crime and need to be forensically interviewed in another language. Recent findings from practitioners raise concerns about the state of interpreter-mediated interviews with children. The current study aimed to explore how Swedish criminal courts reason when assessing interpreter-mediated and interpreter-absent (with children who are not fluent in Swedish) child investigative interviews. We conducted qualitative and descriptive analyses of written court verdicts involving 108 child victims who were evaluated to need an interpreter during their investigative interview. The courts frequently discussed issues regarding possible misinterpretations, language difficulties, and confusion. These perceived deficiencies in the interviews were often mentioned as a cause for assessing the child’s testimony with caution and, in some cases, as lowering the evidential value of the child interview. Possible implications for children’s legal rights are discussed.

  • Disclosure, reactions, and social support: findings from a sample of adult victims of child sexual abuse
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Child maltreatment. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-5595 .- 1552-6119. ; 9:2, s. 190-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information about abuse characteristics, disclosure, and current social support was collected through semistructured interviews and questionnaires from 122 adult women reporting exposure to child sexual abuse by someone close. Women who used an active disclosure strategy in childhood reported more physical and violent abuse. Moreover, women who reported more severe abuse had more often received negative reactions from the social network. Furthermore, a relation was found between current social support and positive—but not negative—reactions.

  • The Role of Psychopathology and Emotion Regulation in the Intergenerational Transmission of Childhood Abuse : A Family Study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Child Maltreatment. - 1077-5595 .- 1552-6119.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies have shown that parents with a history of childhood abuse are at increased risk of perpetrating child abuse. To break the cycle of childhood abuse we need to better understand the mechanisms that play a role. In a cross-sectional extended family design including three generations (N = 250, 59% female), we examined the possible mediating role of parental psychopathology and emotion regulation in the association between a history of childhood abuse and perpetrating child abuse. Parents’ own history of childhood abuse was associated with perpetrating abuse toward their children, and externalizing (but not internalizing) problems partially mediated this association statistically. Implicit and explicit emotion regulation were not associated with experienced or perpetrated abuse. Findings did not differ across fathers and mothers. Findings underline the importance of (early) treatment of externalizing problems in parents with a history of childhood abuse, to possibly prevent the transmission of child abuse.

  • Change in Caregivers’ Attitudes and Use of Corporal Punishment Following a Legal Ban : A Multi-Country Longitudinal Comparison
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Child Maltreatment. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-5595 .- 1552-6119. ; 27:4, s. 561-571
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examined whether a policy banning corporal punishment enacted in Kenya in 2010 is associated with changes in Kenyan caregivers’ use of corporal punishment and beliefs in its effectiveness and normativeness, and compared to caregivers in six countries without bans in the same period. Using a longitudinal study with six waves of panel data (2008-2016), mothers (N = 1086) in Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Philippines, Thailand, and United States reported household use of corporal punishment and beliefs about its effectiveness and normativeness. Random intercept models and multi-group piecewise growth curve models indicated that the proportion of corporal punishment behaviors used by the Kenyan caregivers decreased post-ban at a significantly different rate compared to the caregivers in other countries in the same period. Beliefs of effectiveness of corporal punishment were declining among the caregivers in all sites, whereas the Kenyan mothers reported increasing perceptions of normativeness of corporal punishment post-ban, different from the other sites. While other contributing factors cannot be ruled out, our natural experiment suggests that corporal punishment decreased after a national ban, a shift that was not evident in sites without bans in the same period.

  • Sexual Coercion Experience and Sexually Coercive Behavior : A Population Study of Swedish and Norwegian Male Youth
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Child Maltreatment. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-5595 .- 1552-6119. ; 15:3, s. 219-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The authors tested the hypothesis that experiencing sexual coercion and engaging in sexually coercive behavior are positively associated in a representative sample totaling almost 4,000 Swedish or Norwegian male high school students (estimated response rate 80%). In both surveys, youths who had experienced sexual coercion were approximately three times more likely to engage in sexually coercive behavior than those without such experience (10%-12% vs. 4%). The association between sexual coercion experience and sexually coercive behavior was attenuated but remained significant and moderately strong in both surveys when controlling for nonsexual antisocial behavior, substance use, and noncoercive sexual behavior in multivariate logistic regression models. The population attributable fraction (proportion of sexually coercive behavior that can be explained by sexual coercion experience) was 18%-25%. The findings support a robust link between having been sexually coerced and engaging in coercive sexual behavior in the general population.
