  • Relative Wellbeing of Women Maltreated as Children
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 28:12-13, s. 2947-2965
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores and analyzes how adult women in Sweden exposed to childhood maltreatment describe wellbeing, by using a thematic analysis of 22 semi-structured interviews with women maltreated as children. The results show that wellbeing was described as relative to both social norms and the childhood experiences and constituted four dimensions: Material and/or economic; Social and relational;Emotional; and Physical and/or mental. This study concludes that it is important to consider the relative and multiple ways wellbeing can be experienced and understood and to problematize norms of wellbeing, acknowledging the various ways people appraise their lives.

  • The ability of criminal law to produce gender equality : judicial discourses in the Swedish criminal legal system
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 16:2, s. 173-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main aim of the Swedish Women’s Peace reform in 1998 was to enhance criminal legal protection for women exposed to violence in heterosexual relationships and to promote gender equality. However, these ambitions risk being contravened in a masculinist criminal legal system. One problem concerns how the victim is constructed in criminal legal cases. The author argues that moral balancing and discourses of responsibility and guilt in Swedish cases constrain the agency possible for women and suggest that a more comprehensive policy in Sweden must be developed to include violent men, their agency, and their responsibility for the violence.

  • Experiences of online sexual violence : interviews with Swedish teenage girls in psychiatric care
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research about online sexual violence (OSV) is needed to be able to better meet the needs of girls in psychiatric care. The objectives of this study are to explore experiences of online sexual violence among young female psychiatric service users. Interviews with nine girls with psychiatric care needs were analyzed with thematic analysis. The findings are summarized in four themes which contribute to the notion that online sexual violence is only one, albeit important, part of a more complex picture of violence among young girls in psychiatric care. The girls’ narratives are shaped by, as well as reproducing gender norms.

  • Professionals’ Views on the Comparatively Low Prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in Spain
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 28:6-7, s. 1565-1586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to understand the reasons why Spain has one of the lowest prevalence rates of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) in the European Union. Using a qualitative and inductive research approach, a total of five focus groups (n = 19) and 10 unstructured interviews with key informants were conducted. Three main categories were identified as possible explanations of the relatively low prevalence of IPVAW in Spain: law and policy, social awareness, and cultural patterns. Lessons learned and implications to improve future macrolevel intervention and prevention strategies are discussed.

  • Crime prevention in rural areas : addressing violence against women
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The objective of this article is to report experiences of local crime prevention initiatives onviolence against women in rural Sweden. The study relies on a combination of secondary dataand surveys. Although violence against women is higher in urban areas, rural municipalitiesare showing more cases than in the past. The geography of violence against women is farfrom being homogeneous across the country, reflecting not only population structuraldifferences but also local and regional capabilities of criminal justice and society overallconditions to deal with this type of violence. Beyond the problems imposed by geographicalisolation, some of the challenges shared by those working with violence against women inrural areas are limited resources to assist victims and difficulties in putting in practice nationalpolicy guidelines. The article concludes with a summary of results and suggestions for futureresearch.

  • Fear of Sexual Harassment and Its Impact on Safety Perceptions in Transit Environments : A Global Perspective. Violence Against Women
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study reports variation in safety perceptions in transit environments, based onsamples of university students in 18 cities on six continents who responded to anidentical 45-question survey (N= 13,323 university students). We explore potentiallinks between students’ fears and sexual victimization and conclude that sexualharassment affects their behavior and mobility. Student mobility was affected byavoidance strategies prompting some transit riders to travel at particular times, ontravel routes and settings that are deemed especially risky, or even avoiding usingtransit completely. Findings highlight the importance of city–country contexts fortransit safety.

  • Changes in Psychiatric Symptoms in Swedish Mothers Who Took Part in Project Support : An Intervention for Mothers Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence With Children Who Have Developed Conduct Problems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Project Support (PS) is an evidence-based individual support and parenting program developed for mothers exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) whose children have developed conduct disorders. This Swedish feasibility study focuses on changes in the mothers' psychiatric symptoms, in relation to social and emotional support received as part of PS. In a within-subject design in a naturalistic setting (i.e., 10 social service units), mothers (n = 35) reported a significant decrease in symptoms, but from an individual perspective, most mothers still suffered from clinical levels of psychiatric symptoms. The need for additional interventions for mothers exposed to IPV is discussed.

  • "Keeping up a front" : narratives about intimate partner violence, pregnancy, and antenatal care
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 16:2, s. 189-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nine women who had been subjected to severe intimate partner violence during pregnancy narrated their ambiguous and contradictory feelings and the various balancing strategies they used to overcome their complex and difficult situations. Because allowing anyone to come close posed a threat, the women mostly denied the situation and kept up a front to hide the violence from others. Three women disclosed ongoing violence to the midwives, but only one said such disclosure was helpful. This article highlights the complexity of being pregnant when living with an abusive partner and challenges antenatal care policies from the perspective of pregnant women.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Violence Against Women. - California : Sage publications, Thousand Oaks, CA. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 7:7, s. 779-798
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, the authors examine the contrary way that policy and practice have tended to operate in both Sweden and England, concerning violence against women on one hand and children on the other. The arrangements made for children's contact with parents after parents have separated or divorced are important with regard to the ongoing safety of women and children who have left violent men. However, fatherhood in the context of separation and divorce has tended to be construed as inherently nonviolent, with dangerous consequences for women, child safety, and children's welfare.

  • Increased Risk of Mortality Due to Interpersonal Violence in Foreign-Born Women of Reproductive Age : A Swedish Register-Based Study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 22:11, s. 1287-1304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Violence against women is an increasing public health concern, with assault leading to death as the most extreme outcome. Previous findings indicate that foreign-born women living in Sweden are more exposed to interpersonal violence than Swedish-born women. The current study investigates mortality due to interpersonal violence in comparison with other external causes of death among women of reproductive age in Sweden, with focus on country of birth. Foreign-born women and especially those from countries with low and very low gender equity levels had increased risk of mortality due to interpersonal violence, thus implicating lack of empowerment as a contributing factor.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 28:2, s. 532-550
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • "Upskirting" is the action or practice of surreptitiously taking photographs or videos up a female's skirt or dress. In the United Kingdom, it is an offense. However, internationally, laws are uneven. Understanding how perpetrators account for their actions becomes an important question. Here, we present the findings of our thematic analysis of posts on the "upskirting" website, The Candid Zone. Our analysis shows that posters and respondents frame this activity as artistic and technical, providing each other with advice and guidance on where and how to get the "best" shots. We conceptualize this form of abuse as homosociality and craftsmanship.

  • Gendered and social hierarchies in problem representation and policy processes : ‘Domestic violence’ in Finland and Scotland
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 16:2, s. 136-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article identifies and critiques presumptions about gender and violence that continue to frame and inform the processes of policy formation and implementation on domestic violence. It also deconstructs the agendered nature of policy as gendered, multilevel individual and collective action. Drawing on comparative illustrative material from Finland and Scotland, we discuss how national policies and discourses emphasize physical forms of violence, place the onus on the agency of women, and encourage a narrow conceptualization of violence in relationships. The two countries do this in somewhat comparable, though different ways operating within distinct national gender contexts. The complex interweaving of masculinities, violence, and cultures, although recognized in many debates, is seemingly marginalized from dominant discourses, policy, and legal processes. Despite growth in critical studies on men, there is little attempt made to problematize the gendered nature of violence. Rather, policy and service outcomes reflect processes through which individualized and masculine discourses frame ideas, discourses, and policy work. Women experiencing violence are constructed as victims and potential survivors of violence, although the social and gendered hierarchies evident in policies and services result in longer-term inequities and suffering for women and their dependents.

  • The role of intersectionality and context in measuring gender-based violence in universities and research performing organisations in Europe for the development of inclusive structural interventions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the article is to discuss how thinking about gender-based violence intersectionally and in context can not only enrich our understanding but also lead to transformative change in organizations. The article argues that to better understand gender-based violence in universities and research institutions, analyses need to be intersectional and contextual. Such approaches go beyond binary understandings of gender and narrow legalistic definitions of gender-based violence. The article reflects on how to operationalize this to derive starting points for intersectional categories to consider and contextual factors to measure at micro-, meso-, and macro-levels. It concludes that a multilevel intersectional analysis leads to more nuanced knowledge on experiences of gender-based violence and is, therefore, better equipped to inform the development of measures to eradicate the problem in an inclusive way.

  • Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in the Capital Province of Sri Lanka : Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Help Seeking
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 17:8, s. 1086-1102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents findings from a cross-sectional community survey exploring intimate partner violence (IPV) against women in the Western province of Sri Lanka. Findings show that lifetime prevalence of physical violence (34%), controlling behavior (30%), and emotional abuse (19%) was high and the prevalence of sexual violence was low (5%). Young women and those with partners who abused alcohol/drugs and had extra-marital affairs are at increased risk of violence. Although living in a patriarchal society, low prevalence of child marriages and lack of dowry-related violence could be to Sri Lankan women's advantage relative to their Asian counterparts in preventing IPV.

  • Representation of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in Swedish News Media : A Discourse Analysis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 27:10, s. 1499-1524
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite being rated as some of the world’s most gender equal countries, Sweden and neighboring Nordic nations show high rates of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW). As the news media contribute to the shaping of public attitudes, this article pursues a two-step discourse analysis of how IPVAW was represented in seven Swedish newspapers during 2018. Although an individualistic discourse on IPVAW was found to be most prevalent, articles where perpetrators were presented as non-Swedish more frequently contained a structural framing of IPVAW. This confirms previously noted tendencies toward individualization and othering of IPVAW in Sweden.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 23:13, s. 1656-1668
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The World Health Organization recommends that HIV counseling and testing (HCT) programs implement strategies to address how intimate partner violence (IPV) influences women's ability to protect themselves from and seek care and treatment for HIV infection. We discuss the process used to adapt a screening and brief intervention (SBI) for female clients of HCT services in Rakai, Uganda-a setting with high prevalence of both HIV and IPV. By outlining our collaborative process for adapting and implementing the SBI in Rakai and training counselors for its use, we hope other HCT programs will consider replicating the approach in their settings.

  • Support or Betrayal? : Swedish Survivors’ Experiences of Support from Social Workers during Post-Separation Violence
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to shed light on how Swedish female survivors of male intimate partner violence experience support from social workers during post-separation violence. This is explored through an interview study with sixteen survivors. Hester’s (2011) Three Planet Model is utilized in the analysis. The results show that while the survivors described positive experiences of support from social workers on the Domestic violence planet, they felt social workers in the family law system on the Child contact planet enabled post-separation violence, and reported that this contributed to them feeling betrayed rather than supported.

  • Is Women’s Fear of Crime Fear of Sexual Assault? A Test of the Shadow of Sexual Assault Hypothesis in a Sample of Swedish University Students
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 25:5, s. 511-527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prior research shows that women’s higher fear of crime compared with men can largely be explained by women’s fear of rape. Whether women’s higher fear can also be explained by fear of nonviolent sexual harassment has not been explored. This study tested the shadow of sexual assault hypothesis in a sample of almost 3,000 Swedish university students. Our results confirm previous tests of the shadow thesis on the effect of fear of rape. In addition, we show that fear of sexual harassment also explained differences in fear between men and women. Based on the findings, we recommend that strategies to reduce sexual violence should focus on the entire continuum of violence against women.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To understand the barriers rape victims and their supporters face from their informal networks while disclosing rape events in Tanzania, 30 in-depth interviews with victims and supporters were conducted. We found, that decisions to disclose rape events were influenced at the individual, family, and community levels. The overall theme, ‘normative justification of rape’ indicated wider societal beliefs and attitudes through all levels. The categories ‘internalizing shame and fearing the consequences’, ‘defending family integrity’, ‘reconciling role of the elders’, and ‘marginalizing victims and supporters’ captured the impact the identified normative justification of rape had on specific levels. The possible consequences and implications for interventions are discussed.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 30:2, s. 622-640

    • This study explored the experiences and perceptions of professional service providers offering services to women with disabilities exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV). Eighteen in-depth interviews were conducted with service providers working in health care, social work, the police, women’s shelters, and the Centre for Violence Against Women. Our findings suggest that providing adequate IPV services to women with disabilities requires coordination and collaboration. IPV services were organized around five overarching themes: finding services; assessing the risk; identification; protection and care; and becoming independent. This approach was helpful for women who faced disability-related challenges in accessing IPV services.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Violence against women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1552-8448 .- 1077-8012. ; 27:15-16, s. 2945-2970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This cross-sectional study compared attachment characteristics among women victimized by intimate partner violence (IPV) in no, one, and multiple relationships ( N = 154). Results indicated that compared with the nonvictimized, victimized women had increased likelihood of higher attachment avoidance. Compared with women victimized in one relationship, women victimized in multiple relationships had higher likelihood of higher attachment anxiety scores. Adjusting for childhood adversities, childhood sexual abuse was an independent risk factor for IPV. Childhood emotional abuse mediated the association between attachment anxiety and IPV victimization in multiple relationships in particular. Attachment theory appeared useful for better understanding women’s vulnerability for multiple violent relationships.

    • Over their lifetime, approximately 10% of all women become victims of postseparation stalking or assault. We use a nationally representative survey of separated Swedish women to examine whether men who strive to control their partners during their relationships are more likely to stalk or assault their ex-partners after separation. The empirical analysis shows that basic measures of control behaviors explain 18% of the variance in stalking victimization and 8% of the assault victimization. Moreover, the predictive values of our measures of control by far surpass those of other common risk markers included in the analysis.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 9:6, s. 676-697
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines husband-to-wife violence within a rural Vietnamese community. In Vietnam, domestic violence is tied to a complex field of cultural forces that consists of a patrilineal tradition of ancestor worship, assumptions about females' versus males' character, Confucian virtues, and a history of war. Females are expected to encourage household harmony by adjusting themselves and, in so doing, make social life smooth. Males, on the other hand, are assumed to have a hot character, meaning that a male mightily into a rage and even behave violently. Local ways of constructing females and males, the article suggests, provide conditions for considering females as a corporeal materiality that can be manipulated into the right shape by the means of (male) violence. Domestic violence, like any other violence, by ignoring the corporeal limits thus brutally alters assumptions about the topography of the human body. © 2003 Sage Publications.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 18:11, s. 1257-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This grounded theory study found that Nicaraguan mothers exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy eventually acted to protect their children and themselves. They experienced ending abuse as an empowerment process characterized by a cognitive change in women's attitudes toward partner abuse and the emergence of help-seeking strategies that lead to ending violence with or without ending the relationship. This process was facilitated by a supportive environment that challenged abusive behaviors as well as being asked about abuse during their last pregnancy. Although environmental changes can facilitate ending abuse, Nicaragua's public institutions must be strengthened to reach women in need.

  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 11:2, s. 227-254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Battered women (n = 159) report on their experiences with their Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) caseworkers. Workers most often ask about physical harm, feelings of fear, and police involvement. They least often create a safety plan, give information about work exemptions, and ask whether the partner had a gun. Women's major reasons for not talking about abuse are that the worker did not ask and a fear of negative outcomes. Workers who attended a 1-day training are more likely than untrained workers to discuss the women's fear and physical harm, to help develop a safety plan, and to be viewed as generally helpful.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 14:4, s. 483-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This exploratory study examines which risk factors are associated with intimate partner violence against women in St. Petersburg, Russia. Women attending two crisis centers and a birthing house constituted the study sample. The male partner's frequent alcohol consumption and seeing his father hit his mother in childhood were associated with an increased risk of violence, whereas living in a communal apartment reduced the risk of intimate partner violence. The importance of crisis centers in Russia is highlighted by the study, as the women who turn to them are likely to have experienced more severe forms of violence.

    • This study compared the severity of intimate partner violence (IPV) and the relationship between risk factors for IPV and overall risk judgments of future IPV in urban, rural, and remote areas. IPV risk assessments conducted by the Swedish police between 2010 and 2014 in urban (n = 564), rural (n = 456), and remote (n = 196) areas were examined. Rurality was associated with the severity of IPV reported, as well as the presence of risk factors and their relationship to overall risk judgments. Cases in remote areas included more severe IPV as well as more risk factors.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 16:1, s. 32-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article draws on narratives of volunteers working with women who have experienced violence. It explores how institutional discourses nurture a culture of blame and responsibility. Using qualitative data, it examines the ways in which women victims are seen as complicit in their own victimization. An indirect consequence of the blame/responsibility dichotomy is that victims are depicted as deserving their fate. There is, therefore, a culture of resignation in which violence is normalized. It proposes that if institutional practices are embedded in a feminist tradition, they can provide a more sustainable framework for challenging sexual and domestic violence.

    • The aim of this study is to explore the reasons why it may be difficult to answer questions regarding violence, sexual abuse, and other potentially traumatic events (PTEs). Qualitative and quantitative methods are used with a nonrepresentative community sample of 628 women who respond to a Web survey. Altogether, 65% do not find it difficult to answer any PTE questions. Difficulties in answering occur more frequently with violence and sexual abuse items and are associated with exposure. Reasons for difficulties in answering include “event fit” (severity, frequency, force), “me as a victim” (responsibility, reactions, protection, memory), and “you as abuser” (intention, protection).

  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known about mothers’ and children's escape from violence and its aftermath when living in secure accommodation, especially with regard to children. The aim is to investigate mothers’ experiences of their escape, and their considerations regarding the well-being of their young children before or during their escape, based on 14 interviews. Using a narrative thematic analysis, the results show that the escape was often planned, but that the planning horizon varies. In many cases, the mothers’ social network served as a stepping-stone during the escape, before they continued by moving to a domestic violence shelter (DVS). Implications for policy and practice are offered.

  • A public health approach to intimate partner violence prevention in Uganda : The SHARE project
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 18:12, s. 1390-1412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research from Rakai, Uganda, suggests intimate partner violence (IPV) is common and attitudes condoning it are widespread. We used a public health approach to develop and implement an evidence-based IPV prevention intervention named the Safe Homes and Respect for Everyone (SHARE) Project. SHARE was designed on the Transtheoretical Model of behavior change and adapted IPV prevention strategies from Raising Voices and Stepping Stones. SHARE was implemented in four regions of Rakai. This article describes the design and implementation of SHARE, provides details on strategies and activities used, discusses challenges and lessons learned, and provides recommendations for other violence prevention programmers.

  • Stories of Backlash in Interviews With Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Violence Against Women. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 29:2, s. 154-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite high gender equality ratings, Sweden shows a high prevalence of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW). Suggested factors underlying this apparent paradox include backlash effects against women's empowerment. This study explores stories of backlash in interviews with 23 IPVAW survivors in Sweden. Thematic analysis identified categories of narrative segments referring to phenomena provoking violence; the victims’ resources, agency, breaking with gender norms and resistance, and the partner's feelings of subordination, while case-centered narrative analysis pointed to divergences between how these categories appear in the stories. The study underscores the complexity of links between gender (in)equality and IPVAW in Sweden.

  • "He messed me up" : Swedish adolescent girls' experiences of gender-related partner violence and its consequences over time
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - : Sage. - 1077-8012 .- 1552-8448. ; 16:2, s. 207-232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article illuminates two Swedish adolescent girls' experiences of living in a violent relationship as teenagers and how this has affected their lives and health over time. Interviews were conducted in a youth health center. A combination of qualitative content analysis and narrative analysis describes violation, stress, trauma, coping, and agency during the period of adolescence and transition into adulthood. Despite Swedish progressive public policies on men's violence against women, teenage girls are exposed to male partners' violation, a severe gendered stressor. There is a need for the development of health policy and gender-responsive interventions geared specifically toward adolescent girls.

  • Men's economic abuse towards women in Sweden: Findings from a national survey
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - 1077-8012.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing from a nationally representative survey (n = 6 611), this paper analyses the prevalence of men’s economic abuse towards women in Sweden. Economic abuse is still a relatively marginalised area of research, but increasingly recognised as a distinct type of intimate partner violence (IPV). A few Swedish studies have specifically focused on economic abuse, yet none of which with a quantitative approach. A main finding is that motherhood significantly increases the risk of exposure. Furthermore, women report economic abuse from ex-partners (26 percent) to a much greater extent than from current partners (8 percent).

  • The role of intersectionality and context in measuring gender-based violence in universities and research performing organisations in Europe for the development of inclusive structural interventions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Violence against Women. - 1077-8012.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the article is to discuss how thinking about gender-based violence intersectionally and in context can not only enrich our understanding but also lead to transformative change in organizations. The article argues that to better understand gender-based violence in universities and research institutions, analyses need to be intersectional and contextual. Such approaches go beyond binary understandings of gender and narrow legalistic definitions of gender-based violence. The article reflects on how to operationalize this to derive starting points for intersectional categories to consider and contextual factors to measure at micro-, meso-, and macro - levels. It concludes that a multilevel intersectional analysis leads to more nuanced knowledge on experiences of gender-based violence and is, therefore, better equipped to inform the development of measures to eradicate the problem in an inclusive way.
