  • Negotiating with the Chinese: A socio-cultural analysis
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 36:3, s. 303--325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • China has been one of the most favorite markets for Western firms for the last decade. However, doing business with China is considered difficult, mainly because negotiating with Chinese counterparts is quite complex. This paper analyses the negotiation process with China from a socio-cultural perspective. A Swedish multinational, Ericsson, is followed for several years and its negotiation process for different Chinese projects in the telecommunication industry is studied in depth. Based on these cases and literature a model is developed and some conclusions are drawn. Finally, managerial implications presented as four Ps: Priority, Patience, Price and People sum up the essence of Chinese business negotiation process.

  • International competitiveness and trade promotion policy from a network perspective
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business : JWB. - : Elsevier Inc. - 1878-5573 .- 1090-9516. ; 35:3, s. 275-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The international competitiveness of firms and trade promotion policy are analyzed from a network perspective that emphasizes the role and importance of interfirm relations and networks spanning industry and international boundaries. First, we identify two types of producer networks involved in the overall value production system, that is, primary and ancillary producer nets. Second, we classify networks in terms of two factors that impact on their potential international competitiveness, that is, the location of networks in local or foreign markets and the presence of internationally competitive firms. This leads to the identification of different types of network situations that provide opportunities as well as threats to the international performance of firms operating in those networks and call for different types of trade promotion policies. We discuss the key features of each situation and management and trade promotion policy implications arising.

  • Technology, innovation and knowledge : The importance of ideas and international connectivity
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 51:1, s. 153-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relevance of ideas is at the core of the IB field and has been captured in concepts like technology, innovation and knowledge. While these concepts have evolved over the last decades, the point that the ideas and the international connectivity are central for IB remains genuine. This paper is an attempt to take stock of the evolution of the concepts technology, innovation and knowledge in IB literature along the past five decades with a particular focus on the role of the Columbia Journal of World Business (CJWB) and the Journal of World Business (JWB) in this evolution. Likewise, our objective is to offer a research agenda for the coming decade. We proceed in two steps. First, we scrutinize how the IB literature has progressed and expanded over the last five decades, illustrating this on the basis of articles published in CJWB and JWB. Second, we take a helicopter view on this literature and reflect on the insights we have gained and the challenges the IB field has ahead that can constitute the basis for a future research agenda. We highlight the importance of creating a micro-foundation of knowledge processes where mechanisms on the interaction between the higher levels (nation, firm, teams) and the individual level are clarified.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier Inc.. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 54:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although the core concepts underlying IB and IHRM provide a common lexicon and epistemology, this commonality is often more implicit than explicit. We highlight not only the common ground but also the lack of critical dialogue between the two fields. This paper asks: What can each field learn from the other? What do scholars from IB learn from IHRM and vice versa? We identify a possible agenda and concerns regarding theory building as a basis for dialogue between the two fields. © 2019

  • Contextualizing speed and cross-border acquisition performance : Labor market flexibility and efficiency effects
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 53:2, s. 290-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is general agreement that acquisition integration is decisive for acquisition performance. Despite this consensus, there are heterogeneous results on integration measures, such as integration speed with empirical research supporting the benefits of either fast or slow integration. We argue that the business environment surrounding acquisitions has the potential to reconcile conflicting findings. We develop how institutional factors (i.e., labor market flexibility and efficiency) influence the relationships between speed of human and functional integration on acquisition performance. With a sample of 203 transactions from acquirers from central Europe and Scandinavia, we find human and functional integration speed have divergent effects on acquisition performance. Further, both relationships are moderated by labor market flexibility and efficiency, but in different ways. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

  • Gone are the creatures of yesteryear? On the diffusion of technological capabilities in the ‘modern’ MNC
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 52:1, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper probes the extent to which the rise of the ‘modern’ multinational corporation (MNC) has come with significantly altered patterns in the emergence and diffusion of technological capabilities across units of the MNC network. It draws upon a database containing the complete U.S. patenting history of 24 Swedish multinationals over the 1946–2008 period, which allows us to trace both the emergence and subsequent intra-firm diffusion of technological capabilities throughout the post-war period. The findings show that, over time, foreign subsidiaries have become an increasingly important source of new technological capabilities within the MNC network, and also indicate that the overall pace of capability diffusion has become faster over the observed time period. Notably, however, the results reveal substantial heterogeneity of individual firms’ approaches to organizing and managing technological capabilities within the MNC network. The relationship between evolutionary change and strategic choice emerges as a continually relevant issue in the organization and management of technology in the modern MNC.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 58:2, s. 101416-101416
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We generate new knowledge about financial crises and their consequences for MNC technological development, thereby addressing a largely uncharted issue at the crossroads of the organization, strategy and international business literatures. Drawing on threat-rigidity theory, we argue that financial crises have an overall negative effect on MNC technological exploration and that the strength of the effect differs across greenfield and acquired subsidiaries. Results from an empirical investigation of 21 MNCs over the 1890–2008 period suggest that the dampening effect of financial crises on technological exploration is confined to home-country units and greenfield subsidiaries, whereas it is found to be of less significance among acquired foreign subsidiaries. We suggest that such differentiation within the MNC is indicative of a previously unobserved advantage from multinationality, which allows it to smoothen the effects of financial crises on long-term technological development and corporate growth.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 35:4, s. 333-354
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The analysis of practitioners' narratives in four industries-cables and wires, paint, footwear chocolate, and sugar confectionery-shows that innovative international strategies drive the dynamics of international competition. The four industry case studies suggest an empirical classification of innovative international strategies based on four main dimensions: nature of the firm's competitive advantage, process of internationalization, segment scope, and level of coordination across borders. From these dimensions derive six types of innovative international strategies that change the rules of competition. The findings support a proactive view of economic development and strategic management This framework cart inspire decision makers in charge of crafting consistent and effective international strategies, as it shows that strategic choice can transform industry structure.

  • Dynamic improvisation capabilities as a learning mechanism in early internationalizing firms
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 59:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our study addresses an inconsistency in the literature on whether a lack of knowledge in early internationalizing firms is an obstacle or an advantage. We integrate learning, capabilities, and improvisation literature to reveal how case firms from New Zealand and Finland internationalize early under uncertainty and time pressure. We develop a process model and propositions to show how firms develop improvisation capabilities and subsequently rapidly acquire the international business knowledge that can explain early internationalization. Improvisation and the associated rapid learning complement the learning advantage of newness with an alternative explanation for early internationalization.

  • Speed of internationalization : Conceptualization, measurement and validation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 49:4, s. 633-650
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To better manage and understand the speed at which firms internationalize, managers and scholars need an appropriate conceptualization and a reliable and valid measure of speed of internationalization. The literature, however, adopts a limited temporal perspective and usually conceptualizes and measures it as the time it takes the firm to start to internationalize. This unidimensional view neglects the central aspects of internationalization that create speed. Our purpose is, therefore, to propose a new, theory-driven - embedded in the main concepts of the original Uppsala model - and multidimensional conceptualization and operationalization. The main contribution is that we develop this conceptualization and measure.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 47:4, s. 664-674
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we explore the relationships between subsidiary technology transfer competence, bargaining power and rent-seeking. In the multinational corporation, technology transfer competence is generally perceived as something desirable. We connect this bright side of subsidiary-level processes to a potentially uglier and darker side of the organization, namely that subsidiaries gain bargaining power that is exercised for bad ends, i.e., rent-seeking. Using an empirical analysis that comprises intrafirm technology transfers, this paper finds that technology transfer competence leads to greater subsidiary bargaining power that in turn increases rent-seeking behavior; but this competence does not directly affect rent-seeking. We suggest that bargaining power offers a key explanation for rent-seeking. This paper advances the understanding of subsidiary sources of power within the multinational corporation and the organizational determinants of rent-seeking, which is relevant to theory development as well as to managers.

  • Ingår i: Journal of world business : JWB. - : Elsevier Inc. - 1878-5573 .- 1090-9516. ; 41:4, s. 315-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This inductive interview-based study aims to develop a model which describes the kinds of e-commerce business models that create value in Russia. We suggest that prior e-commerce research has not paid enough attention to the environment's role in determining how value is created by different e-commerce business models and thus explore how key factors in the environment impact the development and effectiveness of e-commerce. The study also identifies eight key drivers of e-commerce value creation in Russia (accessibility, ease of search, ease of use, trust, complementarities, novelty, lock-in, and efficiency). The interaction between these value drivers and characteristics of the external environment affect how value is created by e-commerce business models in Russia.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 57:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses transnational diaspora entrepreneurship (TDE), its superdiversity and respective formal identity and status. As migration increases, formal identity becomes a panacea for migrants' economic participation and global entrepreneurial policies. Our review of TDE literature identified a lack of specification of TDE types and criteria. We develop a taxonomy and discuss TDE problems addressing formal identity, generation, mixed-origin, multi-location, diversity of migratory patterns and cross-border entrepreneurial business activities. Since policymaking employs formal status for impeding or facilitating cross-border venturing, it is crucial to reduce the ambiguity of terms and categories and facilitate more nuanced and accurate theorizing and policymaking.

  • Internationalization Processes in Stable and Unstable Market Conditions : Towards a model of commitment decisions in dynamic environments
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 49:3, s. 332-349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article proposes a managerial decision framework to deal with internationalization whether in stable or dynamic environments. While displaying the effects of unstable and stable environmental settings on commitment decisions, the framework is the result of an inferential abductive approach that merges the risk management model with empirical data collected from a 32-year longitudinal case study on nine Swedish MNCs. The longitudinal analysis shows that when environmental changes are perceived as detrimental, firms tend to decrease their tangible assets and commit in a more intangible way. On the opposite, when changes to the environment are perceived as beneficial, firms follow an incremental path of commitment, preferably in tangible kind. The findings contribute new knowledge to understand such diversities in commitment decisions as divestment, wait-and-see, market-exit and re-entry.

  • Risk Management in the internationalization process of the firm : A note on the Uppsala model
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 46:2, s. 143-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analytically and graphically examines the Uppsala model's risk formula (Johanson & Vahlne, 1977) in its two variables: commitment and uncertainty. The graphical treatment of the variables demonstrates the internationalization mechanism's consistency with the risk formula. In particular, commitment manipulation develops a risk management perspective to the model, wherein contingent uncertainty is a central concept. The main contribution consists in the composition of a set of hypotheses on the effects of risk contingencies on a firm's commitment behavior in different internationalization phases. A pertinent remark that emerges from this analytical exercise is the Uppsala model's contingent nature, which explains the differences in the pattern and pace of the internationalization process, as well as potential leapfrogging and market-exit moves.

  • Social Media Firm Specific Advantages as Enablers of Network Embeddedness of International Entrepreneurial Ventures
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of World Business. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 56:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combining internalisation theory and internationalisation networking literature we study how international entrepreneurial ventures use social media to internationalise. Our qualitative study reveals the governance mechanisms and learning that are part of a dynamic process. We explain how firms leverage their own social media capabilities and bundle them with the capabilities of foreign partners, which they leverage to create new social-media capabilities to grow internationally. Firms leverage social-media capabilities to become embedded within emerging and strategic networks, a position that is central for firms to mitigate threats of opportunism and bounded reliability and to overcome liabilities connected to smallness, newness, and foreignness.

The paper examines cross-country differences in SME managers’ perceptions of business associations as sources of political intelligence and their ability to influence policy responses to financial crises. Findings demonstrate that the respondents’ countries of origin are significantly correlated with (1) their use of information sources to gather political intelligence, (2) their perceptions regarding the effectiveness of business associations in influencing policy outcomes, and (3) their perceptions regarding policymakers’ appreciation of information provided by SME associations.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 52:5, s. 653-663
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop theory stating that international and market-specific social capital are two distinct forms of social capital which both increase international opportunity exploitation. We also argue that market-specific social capital mediates international social capital. Our theoretical developments are based on internationalization process theory and social network theory. Using data on 239 internationalizing SMEs, our results confirm that the effect of international social capital on opportunity exploitation is only mediated via market-specific social capital. Hence, we identify an internationalization process for social capital development in international business opportunity exploitation. Our contribution adds in several ways to existing international business research.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of World Business. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 57:2

    • While the literature emphasizes the importance of knowledge and foreign market knowledge for international performance, it is unclear about the intervening/mediating relationships. From a knowledge-based view and network approach, we posit that previous foreign market entry (FME) knowledge can be used in the selection of international markets and to enhance network capabilities and international performance. We test the relationships between these constructs in a sample of 140 Australian SMEs. We contribute to the international SME literature by explaining important mechanisms through which FME knowledge affects SMEs’ international performance. International market selection and network capability mediate its relationship with international performance. © 2021

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 58:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sanctions are a tool used by political actors to induce foreign countries, firms or individuals to alter their behavior. As nonmilitary coercive measure, they have the potential to disrupt the international business environment, often on short notice, and change the rules of the game. Synthesizing the available evidence on the economic and political impacts of sanctions, we explore how sanctions disrupt the institutional framework for international business and how firms respond to sanctions. Based on a review of available scholarly evidence, we discuss how theories of international business, such as institution-based view, resource-and knowledge-based view, resource dependency theory, and behavioral theories of the firm, can contribute to explaining the impact of sanctions. At the same time, we discuss how sanctions, as politically motivated disruptions, challenge some assumptions underlying these theories. Going forward, our research agenda on sanctions is likely to help firms and governments to strategize in a geopolitically sensitive world.

    • Multinationals (MNCs) need to find the balance between developing a globally standardized organizational culture and having multiple locally- adapted organizational cultures. Past literature embodies the bias that differences between MNC units, unless managed, would lead to adverse consequences. To counter this negative bias, we focus on cultural fit, which is the amount of difference yielding maximum benefit. We argue that depending on comparison criterion and desired outcome, fit could be achieved by establishing similarities or maintaining differences. Using evolutionary economics, we explore knowledge transfer within MNCs and test our hypotheses on fit using a unique dyadic dataset from 186 MNCs.

  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 49:1, s. 101-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on how power is gained within large organizations, such as the intra-organizational network of MNCs. Drawing on resource dependence literature, this study develops and empirically tests a set of hypotheses aimed at explaining the multifaceted nature of power and decision making in multinational firms. Data collected from 2107 foreign-owned subsidiaries in seven European countries is used to test the hypotheses. The results indicate that mutual dependence and dependence imbalance provide strong explanations for subsidiary power. Furthermore, subsidiary power over strategic decisions in the MNC is gained through functional power, notably the possession of technological, rather than business-related, power or by the possession of both as they reinforce each other in strengthening the subsidiary's strategic power in the MNC network. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. We also examine whether absorptive capacity, shared values, and psychological safety, representing constituents of the motivation-opportunity-ability model of behavior, moderate relationships of subsidiary internal knowledge-based activities with responsiveness. Based on a sample of 173 Chinese subsidiaries, the results suggest knowledge transfer and absorptive capacity facilitate local responsiveness. Shared values moderates positively and absorptive capacity negatively, the relationship between knowledge transfer and responsiveness. Psychological safety strengthens the link between reverse knowledge transfer and local responsiveness.

    • Knowledge-based and network-based activities are known determinants of foreign subsidiary influence. We demonstrate that the interaction between these factors is essential in understanding how subsidiaries gain influence within an MNC. We test this using data on 184 foreign-owned subsidiaries in the UK. The results indicate that the possession of strategic resources (knowledge or embedded relations) increases subsidiary influence only when the knowledge is transferred back to headquarters. Importantly, the impact of subsidiary-headquarters embeddedness, external embeddedness and knowledge development on influence is mediated by the extent of reverse knowledge transfer. This mediating role sheds new light on the antecedents to subsidiary influence. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

Building upon earlier indices we develop a conceptual framework informed by transaction cost theory and derive measures which emphasize the importance of enforcement-related aspects of the patent system of countries. Findings reveal harmonization of the regulative aspects of patent protection internationally in the post-TRIPs era but not of overall national patent systems. The index should inform studies on the relationship between national patent systems and a range of international business and other phenomena.

  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 48:4, s. 503-514
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates local vertical linkages of foreign subsidiaries and the dual role of such linkages as conduits for learning as well as potential channels for spillovers to competitors. On the basis of data from 97 subsidiaries, we analyze the quality of such linkages under varying levels of competition and subsidiary capabilities. Our theoretical development and the results from the analysis document a far more complex and dynamic relationship between levels of competition and MNCs' local participation in knowledge intensive activities, i.e. learning and spillovers, than previous studies do. We find a curvilinear relationship between the extent of competitive pressure and the quality of local linkages confirming our argument of a trade-off between learning prospects and spillover risks. Furthermore, the level of subsidiary capabilities moderates this relationship.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 59:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this editorial, and the special issue, is to initiate a dialogue about the role of time in international business (IB) scholarship. While time is inherent in IB phenomena, it has, to date, received limited attention in IB research and theorizing. When IB scholars do account for time, they generally adhere to assumptions representing time as linear and objective. We discuss the importance of time in the philosophical, conceptual, and methodological domains of IB, defining each of these three interconnected domains, problematizing their dominant assumptions about time, and suggesting potential avenues for rethinking time in IB.

  • The impact of board of directors’ characteristics on the internationalization of family SMEs
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 58:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Family small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face both general bounded rationality challenges and a unique expression of bounded rationality in their internationalization process: the bifurcation bias, a concept aligned with modern transaction cost theory (TCT). We argue that efficient governance in family SMEs, and especially features of the Board of Directors’ composition, can help alleviate bounded rationality. Complementing TCT with upper echelons theory (UET), we investigate which Board characteristics in family SMEs contribute to efficient governance and the ensuing strategy decisions. We focus specifically on strategy decisions in the internationalization sphere. Our empirical analysis of survey data from 328 Belgian family SMEs, operating out of a small open economy, reveals that family SMEs internationalize more if their Boards are ‘open’, ‘inclusive’, ‘experienced’ and ‘active’. These Board characteristics, all reflective of efficient governance, i.e., providing the Board with the capacity to alleviate bounded rationality constraints, positively contribute to internationalization, especially (and perhaps paradoxically) when the family SME is managed by a CEO who is also a family member.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite its growing social relevance, research on cultural diversity in top management teams (TMTs) has been sparse and fragmented. To build a firm foundation and facilitate the development of this field, we review and synthesize 106 key articles published between 1997 and 2021. Our study provides a comprehensive field map explicating the antecedents and influence of TMT cultural diversity, showing that cultural diversity constitutes a distinct and important aspect of TMT diversity that has significant implications for a variety of outcomes. By critically assessing the field, we identify key research gaps and promising areas for future research.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 43:2, s. 171-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores how different kinds of knowledge of founders and managers at Born Globals are related to the firms' discovery and exploitation of foreign market opportunities. Based on data from eight biotech Born Globals, we dichotomized Born Globals into two subsets: Born Industrials and Born Academics. The study shows that the founders' and managers' different combinations of technological and international knowledge impact the firms' proactive or reactive behavior in discovering foreign market opportunities. The results indicate that different kinds of Born Globals follow different internationalization processes and that Born Globals, therefore, should not be analyzed as a homogenous group, which has been the common perspective in previous research. • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 48:2, s. 260-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examine how software international entrepreneurs in Iceland use online social network sites to develop and harness their network relationships. To study these relationships, we use a combination of participant observation on LinkedIn and open ended face-to-face interviews. The framework for this study is based on resource-based view, networks and international entrepreneurship theories. We found that entrepreneurs with the largest networks use the online social network to demonstrate their network strength and to identify opportunities to bridge relationships. Our contribution illustrates how entrepreneurs acquire resources to internationalize through online social capital formation.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 57:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lateral collaboration across subsidiaries is beneficial for innovation in multinational corporations (MNCs), such as the creation of new organizational practices, because it helps working towards shared, rather than subsidiarycentric, objectives and creates new knowledge. To instill lateral collaboration, prior research has mainly focused on coordination mechanisms that rely on interpersonal exchanges among dispersed individuals across subsidiaries. However, due to rising concerns over coordination cost and sustainability of international travel, MNCs are increasingly challenged to search for other approaches that require less direct interpersonal interaction across subsidiaries. We, therefore, ask: How can MNCs elicit lateral collaboration during practice creation in a less space-time sensitive way? Drawing on a longitudinal case study, we develop a model of practice creation in MNCs. Our model offers two main insights. First, it details a novel approach for unleashing the benefits of lateral collaboration in globally-linked innovation processes in MNCs. In contrast to emphasizing coordination mechanisms that focus on interpersonal interactions across subsidiaries, our study contributes by detailing the emergence of lateral knowledge through a shared technological artefact as key enabler. Second, our model illuminates how MNCs can innovate new organizational practices that reflect both MNC and local subsidiary needs by adopting an improvisational approach.

  • A Corporate Model of Sustainable Business Practices: An Ethical Perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 45:4, s. 336-345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers contemporary business practice and its sustainable performance from the view of stakeholders and their perceived value. A company has responsibilities and commitments to many different internal and external stakeholders in the marketplace and society. This view underlines the need for organizations to, not only provide value, but do so in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. A model is developed based on five, separate but interconnected, elements. The model is iterative and acknowledges its elementary state, suggesting further development and refinement in the field of sustainable business practices from an ethical perspective.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 55:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The centrality of communication in international business (IB) is undeniable; yet our understanding of the phenomenon is partially constrained by a cross-cultural comparative focus as opposed to intercultural, process-oriented research designs that capture the dynamic nature of communicative interactions. Our brief review of studies at the intersection of culture and communication in the context of global work interactions reveals the dominant research trends that guided IB scholarship to date in this domain. We propose eight shifts in perspective to advance the field's theorizing and create avenues for further research.

  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 56:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is an urgent need in the field of international entrepreneurship to elucidate how SMEs can pursue new opportunities in a digital international business environment. The purpose of this study is to examine, by using effectuation theory, the processes by which retail SMEs develop international e-commerce in foreign markets. This research is based upon qualitative data from three Swedish retail-SMEs. This study makes a theoretical contribution to international entrepreneurship research by providing more granular insights into the actual drivers of e-commerce internationalisation. In particular, this study illustrates how capabilities underlie the processes of international e-commerce development.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 52:1, s. 111-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce the notion of attention dissonance, where the subsidiary within a headquarter-subsidiary relationship feels that headquarters’ attention at the cognitive level, reflected in its strategic intentions (attention perspective), is not aligned with the routine actions the headquarters performs vis-à-vis the specific subsidiary (attention engagement). Using a comparative case study design, we investigate a European organization with subsidiaries located in both emerging and advanced markets. We show how subsidiaries in the emerging markets face attention dissonance, which impedes their ability to get business opportunities across to headquarters, thereby compromising a necessary condition for realizing economic potential in these emerging markets.

  • Foreign Market Exit in Family Firms : Do Historical Military and Cultural Frictions Matter?
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 59:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a fast-changing world, strategic decisions to exit a foreign market become more complex for family firms, owing to their vulnerability to uncertainty in internationalization. However, there is scant research on family firms’ foreign market exit with respect to their responses to contextual influences from home and host countries. This study reconciles the socioemotional wealth (SEW) perspective and the friction lens to address this gap. Using a sample of 1,455 subsidiaries established by 413 Chinese family firms in 2009-2018, we find that historical military friction increases family firms’ foreign market exit, while cultural friction leads to a lower exit propensity. We also find that family management reinforces the friction-exit relationships, and this effect is strengthened when the family firm is controlled by the first generation. Our theory and related findings deepen our understanding of the foreign market exit decision of family firms while offering important theoretical and managerial implications.

  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 47:4, s. 592-603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global teams that are characterized by national, cultural and linguistic heterogeneity and operate in a globally dispersed virtual environment are becoming an established form of organizing work in multinational organizations. As global team leadership research is rather limited, we review the literature on leading multicultural and virtual teams in a global context, focusing on leadership competencies, styles, strategies and modes. We also examine the emergent concepts of biculturalism, global mindsets and cultural intelligence with respect to team leaders. Our aim is to add to our knowledge of leading global teams, highlight recent trends and suggest directions for future research. Three themes for global team leadership emerged: leaders as boundary spanners, bridge makers and blenders, people-oriented leadership, and leveraging diversity. We discuss implications for research and practice.

  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 46:3, s. 296-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With multinational corporations increasingly adopting English as a corporate language, the issue of language management and the pros and cons of language standardization have been widely debated in the literature. Our 17-country study considers whether the use of English as a common corporate language causes difficulties. We empirically examine whether managerial reactions to specific leadership scenario-based situations change as a consequence of the language they use. Our results show that the choice of language (native or English) does not matter much for the studied leadership scenarios. Instead, leadership decisions and reactions depend more on cultural and situational context.

  • Does board independence influence financial performance in IPO firms? : The moderating role of the national business system
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - Kidlington : Pergamon Press. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 52:5, s. 628-639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prior evidence suggests that board independence may enhance financial performance, but this relationship has been tested almost exclusively for Anglo-American countries. To explore the boundary conditions of this prominent governance mechanism, we examine the impact of the formal and information institutions of 18 national business systems on the board independence-financial performance relationship. Our results show that while the direct effect of independence is weak, national-level institutions significantly moderate the independence-performance relationship. Our findings suggest that the efficacy of board structures is likely to be contingent on the specific national context, but the type of legal system is insignificant. © 2017 Elsevier Inc.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 57:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge is critical to the survival of emerging economy multinationals (EMNEs), who are confronted by a lack of internal competitive capabilities and external challenges associated with diverse institutional environments. They thus must manage and orchestrate their knowledge globally for ultimate catch up. This article systematically reviews literature concerning EMNE knowledge management using content analysis of 93 articles in 17 leading journals across 7 major disciplines from 2000 to 2020. Applying the antecedent-process-outcome (APO) framework, we identify three major themes: knowledge-seeking strategy, knowledge transfer and innovation. We discuss knowledge frontier issues, directions for future scholarship, and avenues for greater interdisciplinary cross-fertilization.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of world business (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 55:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transfer of knowledge-based resources from acquirers to the acquired units has been ubiquitously emphasized as an important driver of post-acquisition integration. Equally emphasized is the importance of recipient unit’s absorptive capacity for the success of knowledge transfer and the facilitating role of HRM practices in developing absorptive capacity. In this paper, we integrate different streams of research on post-acquisition integration, knowledge transfer, absorptive capacity and HRM practices. Different from most past research, we pay attention theoretically and empirically to the multi-dimensional nature of both knowledge transfer and absorptive capacity. We test our hypotheses on a sample of acquired Chinese subsidiaries of 181 multinational corporations from seven countries. We find that successful inflow and implementation of knowledge require the acquired unit to have distinct types of capabilities each of which can be developed by a specific HRM practice. These results contribute literature by recognizing absorptive capacity as a manageable capability and identifying how different components of this capability could be developed by specific HRM practices. Furthermore, our results shed light on human side of M&As by examining how companies can foster post-acquisition integration by fine-tuning the absorptive capacity of acquired units.

  • Introducing the eventful temporality of historical research into international business
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of World Business. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516. ; 57:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Historical research represents an alternative understanding of temporality that can contribute to greater meth-odological and theoretical plurality in international business (IB) research. Historians focus on the importance of events within their historical context and structure their accounts through periodisation, assume that the tem-poral distance between the past and present determines the temporal positionality of researchers, and seek to reconstruct past events through historical sources, which require critical interpretation. Historical research provides an alternative methodological approach to temporality, context, and distance with relevance to a range of IB theories.

  • ‘How do firms reach out to foreign universities? Inventors’ personal characteristics and the multinational structure of firms’
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of World Business. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516. ; 58:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the determinants of firm-based inventors’ collaborations with universities abroad, comparing them with collaborations with national universities. We propose a micro-founded theoretical framework that introduces the role of personal linkages and global organizational pipelines as drivers of international academic collaborations, and we empirically investigate collaborations with national and international universities in a sample of inventors in Italy. We find that in general international collaborations depend positively on inventors working for multinational enterprises (MNEs). Instead for collaborations with national universities, the personal local linkages of the inventors play a large role. However, we also find that for collaborations with very distant universities abroad, such as US ones, working for an MNE is less crucial and the personal linkages of inventors become more important. In this case being an inventor with a network of foreign colleagues and with greater acquaintance with the norms of open science facilitates the interaction. This applies also to inventors who work for MNEs. The results point to a hybrid model of global linkages in the case of collaborations between firms and universities, in which both the personal international linkages of the inventors and the global organizational pipelines of MNEs play an important role.
