  • Diagnosis and Management of Posterior Cortical Atrophy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Current Treatment Options in Neurology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1092-8480 .- 1534-3138. ; 25:2, s. 23-43
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose of review: The study aims to provide a summary of recent developments for diagnosing and managing posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). We present current efforts to improve PCA characterisation and recommendations regarding use of clinical, neuropsychological and biomarker methods in PCA diagnosis and management and highlight current knowledge gaps. Recent findings: Recent multi-centre consensus recommendations provide PCA criteria with implications for different management strategies (e.g. targeting clinical features and/or disease). Studies emphasise the preponderance of primary or co-existing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology underpinning PCA. Evidence of approaches to manage PCA symptoms is largely derived from small studies. Summary: PCA diagnosis is frequently delayed, and people are likely to receive misdiagnoses of ocular or psychological conditions. Current treatment of PCA is symptomatic — pharmacological and non-pharmacological — and the use of most treatment options is based on small studies or expert opinion. Recommendations for non-pharmacological approaches include interdisciplinary management tailored to the PCA clinical profile — visual-spatial — rather than memory-led, predominantly young onset — and psychosocial implications. Whilst emerging disease-modifying treatments have not been tested in PCA, an accurate and timely diagnosis of PCA and determining underlying pathology is of increasing importance in the advent of disease-modifying therapies for AD and other albeit rare causes of PCA.

  • The Magical Theory of Politics : Memes, Magic, and the Enchantment of Social Forces in the American Magic War
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nova Religio. - : University of California Press. - 1092-6690 .- 1541-8480. ; 23:4, s. 15-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The election of the 45th president of the United States set in motion a hidden war in the world of the occult. From the meme-filled underworld of alt-right-dominated imageboards to a widely publicized “binding spell” against Trump and his supporters, the social and ideological divides ripping the American social fabric apart are mirrored by witches, magicians, and other esotericists fighting each other with magical means. This article identifies key currents and developments and attempts to make sense of the wider phenomenon of why and how the occult becomes a political resource. The focus is on the alt-right’s emerging online esoteric religion, the increasingly enchanted notion of “meme magic,” and the open confrontation between different magical paradigms that has ensued since Trump’s election in 2016. It brings attention to the competing views of magical efficacy that have emerged as material and political stakes increase, and theorizes the religionizing tendency of segments of the alt-right online as a partly spontaneous and partially deliberate attempt to create “collective effervescence” and galvanize a movement around a charismatic authority. Special focus is given to the ways in which the politicized magic of both the left and the right produce “affect networks” that motivate political behaviors through the mobilization of (mostly aversive) emotions.

  • Secret cousins : Analogies in the construction of religious authority through "science" in Maurice Bucaille and Claude Vorilhon (Raël)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nova Religio. - : University of California Press. - 1092-6690 .- 1541-8480. ; 20:2, s. 34-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper I discuss the work of two French authors who advocate a "scientific" exegesis of sacred scriptures: physician Maurice Bucaille (1922-1998) and religious leader Claude Vorilhon (alias Raël, b. 1946). Bucaille argues that the Qur'an's divine origin is demonstrated by its accuracy about natural phenomena and "scientific facts," whereas the Bible does not stand up to "scientific" examination. Vorilhon supposedly received a revelation regarding the creation of humanity by an alien race, the Elohim. Part and parcel of such revelation is a biblical exegesis that identifies, in numerous passages of the Old and New Testaments, allusions to the Elohim's technological interventions in the history of humanity. I argue here that despite apparent differences, these textual strategies - blending "science" and scriptures - display substantial similarities, and that they are influenced by narrative and philosophical patterns deeply rooted in French culture.

  • Mona Lisa’s Mysterious Smile : The Artist Initiate in Esoteric New Religions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nova Religio. - : University of California Press. - 1092-6690 .- 1541-8480. ; 19:4, s. 14-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article discusses the view, held by many nineteenth-century authors, of Leonardo da Vinci as an esotericist, and his La Gioconda as mysterious, sinister and filled with hidden signs. This “esoterization” of the painting and its creator was part of a broader tendency to view artists, both historical and contemporary, as magicians and mystics in some sense. Hereby, art became integrated into the endeavors of various esoteric groups and thinkers, and an originally secular Renaissance work was absorbed into a nineteenth-century “occulture” or “cultic milieu.”

  • The Narrative of Ma Anand Sheela : Charisma and institutionalization in the Osho movement
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nova Religio. - : University of California Press. - 1092-6690 .- 1541-8480. ; 24:4, s. 41-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article will discuss charisma and institutionalization in the Rajneesh/Osho movement between 1981 and 1985, during its Rajneeshpuram, Oregon phase, based on an interview with Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh’s former secretary, known as Ma Anand Sheela. A model by sociologist Roy Wallis with different possibilities for the charismatic leader to respond to institutionalization will be applied, and a previous application by sociologist Susan J. Palmer will be discussed. I argue that Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, later known as Osho, was more active in the institutionalization of the movement than is depicted by the group, and that legal reasons may have been the motivation for both his vow of silence from 1981 to 1984 and the creation of the religion Rajneeshism in 1983.

  • The Satsang Network : A Growing Post-Osho Phenomenon
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Novo Religio: The Journal of Alternative and Emergent Religions. - : University of California Press. - 1092-6690 .- 1541-8480. ; 6:1, s. 64-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes and discusses a phenomenon I call the Satsang network, a group of Westerners claiming to have reached enlightenment. Several of these persons spent many years with the controversial guru, Osho; hence, I argue that one way of understanding the Satsang network is as a post-Osho development in which satsang holders become an example of how charismatic leaders emerge from institutionalized religious movements. Also discussed are the construction, confirmation, and social support of the enlightenment process; the alteration of meanings when Eastern concepts are interpreted from a Western perspective; and ways in which certain core teachings in the Satsang network mirror key processes of current globalization.

  • Fighting the Modern with the Virgin Mary The Palmarian Church
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nova Religio. - : University of California Press. - 1092-6690 .- 1541-8480. ; 17:2, s. 40-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides a study of the organizational development and self-understanding of the Spanish Palmarian movement that emerged from a series of Marian apparitions in the Andalusian town of Palmar de Troya beginning in 1968. Within a year the leading visionary was Clemente Dominguez, whose received messages leveled severe criticism against the post-Vatican II Roman Catholic Church. In the mid-1970s, the Palmarians ordained their own priests and consecrated their own bishops; in 1978, Dominguez declared himself divinely elected pope and founded the Palmarian Church. At the beginning, Palmar de Troya was a typical apparition case, but development of apparition contents, a solid financial base, and the tumultuous relationship with the Roman Catholic Church eventually led to the founding of a separate church. From its inception, the Palmarian Church claimed that the outside world was evil, but with time it has become even more closed and exclusive.

  • Perspectives by Incongruity
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nova Religio. - : University of California Press. - 1092-6690 .- 1541-8480. ; 16:4, s. 93-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aside from discussing the three articles in this special issue of Nova Religio on Religion and the Transnational Imagination, these brief comments aim to make a critical plea for conceptual clarification when it comes to what exactly the relatively novel, and arguably under-theorized term “transnational” might possibly mean when yoked to the historically old, but arguably equally problematic category, “religion.” My main argument is, if for different (though ultimately not altogether unrelated) reasons, both terms—at least as currently operationalized in much of the anthropology of religion, and religious studies more generally—not only fail to capture the social realities reported in the essays in this special issue, but also unhelpfully shore up a set of ideologies about the supposedly “novel” nature of our “globalized” human condition, that we might better rethink.
