  • Case-Based Reasoning Systems in the Health Sciences : A Survey of Recent Trends and Developments
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on systems, man and cybernetics. Part C, Applications and reviews. - 1094-6977 .- 1558-2442. ; 41:4, s. 421-434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Health Sciences are, nowadays, one of the major application areas for case-based reasoning (CBR). The paper presents a survey of recent medical CBR systems based on a literature review and an e-mail questionnaire sent to the corresponding authors of the papers where these systems are presented. Some clear trends have been identified, such as multipurpose systems: more than half of the current medical CBR systems address more than one task. Research on CBR in the area is growing, but most of the systems are still prototypes and not available on the market as commercial products. However, many of the projects/systems are intended to be commercialized.

  • Distributed power system automation with IEC 61850, IEC 61499, and intelligent control
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on systems, man and cybernetics. Part C, Applications and reviews. - 1094-6977 .- 1558-2442. ; 41:1, s. 81-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a new approach to power system automation, based on distributed intelligence rather than traditional centralized control. The paper investigates the interplay between two international standards, IEC 61850 and IEC 61499, and proposes a way of combining of the application functions of IEC 61850-compliant devices with IEC 61499-compliant “glue logic,” using the communication services of IEC 61850-7-2. The resulting ability to customize control and automation logic will greatly enhance the flexibility and adaptability of automation systems, speeding progress toward the realization of the smart grid concept.

  • Involving users in the design of a mobile office robot
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on systems, man and cybernetics. Part C, Applications and reviews. - : IEEE. - 1094-6977 .- 1558-2442. ; 34:2, s. 113-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the experiences from the iterative design of a fetch-and-carry-robot, to be used by motion-impaired people in an office environment. A user-centered approach was chosen, involving several steps of information elicitation to inform the design. We describe the main elements of the design process, the communication and interaction components of the final prototype system, and an evaluation of the system in the form of a longitudinal study. Results from this study confirmed that continuous testing with users is extremely important in the design process for service robots. The trials have also revealed that interaction design for robots should not focus only on the individual user, but that other members in the environment can be seen "secondary users" or "bystanders" who tend to relate to the robot actively in various ways. We conclude that these social and collaborative issues should be studied in future research.

  • Agent-Based Distributed Manufacturing Process Planning and Scheduling : A State-of-the-Art Survey
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on systems, man and cybernetics. Part C, Applications and reviews. - : IEEE. - 1094-6977 .- 1558-2442. ; 36:4, s. 563-577
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manufacturing process planning is the process of selecting and sequencing manufacturing processes such that they achieve one or more goals and satisfy a set of domain constraints. Manufacturing scheduling is the process of selecting a process plan and assigning manufacturing resources for specific time periods to the set of manufacturing processes in the plan. It is, in fact, an optimization process by which limited manufacturing resources are allocated over time among parallel and sequential activities. Manufacturing process planning and scheduling are usually considered to be two separate and distinct phases. Traditional optimization approaches to these problems do not consider the constraints of both domains simultaneously and result in suboptimal solutions. Without considering real-time machine workloads and shop floor dynamics, process plans may become suboptimal or even invalid at the time of execution. Therefore, there is a need for the integration of manufacturing process-planning and scheduling systems for generating more realistic and effective plans. After describing the complexity of the manufacturing process-planning and scheduling problems, this paper reviews the research literature on manufacturing process planning, scheduling as well as their integration, particularly on agent-based approaches to these difficult problems. Major issues in these research areas are discussed, and research opportunities and challenges are identified

  • Closed-loop modeling in future automation system engineering and validation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on systems, man and cybernetics. Part C, Applications and reviews. - 1094-6977 .- 1558-2442. ; 39:1, s. 17-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a new framework for design and validation of industrial automation systems based on systematic application of formal methods. The engineering methodology proposed in this paper is based on the component design of automated manufacturing systems from intelligent mechatronic components. Foundations of such components'information infrastructure are the new IEC 61499 architecture and the automation object concept. It is illustrated in this paper how these architectures, in conjunction with other advanced technologies, such as Unified Modeling Language, Simulink, and net condition/event systems, form a framework that enables pick-and-place design, simulation, formal verification, and deployment with the support of a suite of software tools. The key feature of the framework is the inherent support of formal validation techniques achieved on account of automated transformation among different system models. The paper appeals to developers of automation systems and automation software tools via showing the pathway to improve the system development practices by combining several design and validation methodologies and technologies.
