  • What do we know about knowledge reuse in organisations?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Global Business and Economics Review (GBER). - : InderScience Publishers. - 1097-4954 .- 1745-1329. ; 19:4, s. 420-447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper looks into knowledge that is ‘wasted’ in organisations, that is existing relevant knowledge that is not (re)used in business operations. Against the backdrop of today’s business environment, a lack of knowledge application is not only costly but also dangerous. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to review research on knowledge reuse (waste) in organisations to identify our current body of knowledge and gaps in the field justifying further research activities. In order to do so, the study consists of a systematic review of 52 refereed empirical articles on knowledge reuse in organisations. The topic seems to be a promising field for intensive research and offers a variety of future research avenues. Some ideas for future research are proposed in this study.

  • Challenging boundaries : evaluation of work organisation at Sunderby hospital from a process and patient oriented perspective
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Global Business and Economics Review (GBER). - 1097-4954 .- 1745-1329. ; 7:2/3, s. 191-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is an evaluation of an attempt to apply managerial tools and techniques initially developed for industry in the health care sector. In 1999, Sunderby hospital was opened and the result of extensive organisational development became subject to an evaluation of whether goals in terms of process and patient orientation had been realised. The result indicates that a number of measures were taken in this direction but that they do not, in any fundamental way, challenge boundaries that need to be challenged in a process oriented organisation. For that, the new organisation is reminiscent of a traditional health care organisation, based on clinical departments and characterised by vertical as well as horizontal boundaries. Additionally, many of the projects initiated, clearly focus on the patient and the flow of patients, but can be regarded as free standing 'islands' as the concept of patient and process orientation is not fully supported and implemented in the organisation.

  • University spin-offs and triple helix dynamics in regional innovation ecosystems: A comparison of technology intensive start-ups in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Global Business and Economics Review. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1745-1329 .- 1097-4954. ; 21:3/4, s. 362-381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study offers novel insights into how university spin-offs contribute to triple helix dynamics and the evolutionary processes of industrial renewal in regional innovation ecosystems. We analyse three groups of technology intensive start-ups: university spin-offs, corporate spin-offs, and independent technology start-ups. We compare and analyse various characteristics, functions, and processes among the three groups using primary data from a questionnaire survey conducted at 341 young firms operating in two technology intensive sectors in Sweden. Our findings suggest that university spin-offs differ from the other two groups with respect to their contribution to triple helix dynamics in regional innovation ecosystems. University spin-offs cooperate more closely with universities, conduct more in-house R&D, purchase more R&D services, and offer more innovative products/services in the introduction stage of their industry life cycles.

  • Development of European cluster initiatives : stakeholders' contribution and enrolment
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Global Business and Economics Review (GBER). - : InderScience Publishers. - 1097-4954 .- 1745-1329. ; 21:6, s. 685-711
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated how cluster initiatives' members contribute to cluster initiatives concerning tasks as well as what dependency patterns exist between maturation level and enrolment of members in these organisations. The content of the work is considered as crucial for organisational functioning and development. The findings are based on survey responses from 136 (53% response rate) cluster initiatives from eight European countries. The results show that, first, all members contribute to initiatives' development by performing strategic, operational tasks, and provision of resources. Each member tends to focus more on one task than the others that are delegated. Second, two factors influence enrolment of new members in cluster initiatives: age and presence of other influential members. The more mature cluster initiatives become the more networks and established organisational attributes it will have. This reflects longevity of the initiative and good-quality, intermediary assistance, which are attractive for potential members.

  • Networked establishment processes in transition economies
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Global Business and Economics Review (GBER). - : InderScience Publishers. - 1097-4954 .- 1745-1329. ; 22:1/2, s. 161-177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to examine the establishment processes of Scania in Croatia and Statoil in Estonia applying a model developed from the network approach. The findings show that Statoil’s ability to leverage significant actors in its network to support its establishment made the process less cumbersome and less resource-consuming. Scania’s lack of home- and host country support resulted in an arduous and costly process, with Scania’s market position changing several times as different problems cropped up. We also found that relationship orientation requires adaptation by the firm and, more critically, by its managers. A lack of cross-cultural competence is also observed to be an impeding factor in the process.

  • Knowledge management in small firms
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Global Business and Economics Review (GBER). - 1097-4954 .- 1745-1329. ; 7:2/3, s. 214-224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • All companies that wish to stay competitive have to develop their ability to maintain, improve, organise, use and reuse the employees' knowledge, tangible as well as intangible. Knowledge management has become a very important management tool. Although still open to several interpretations, it is possible to identify two main strategies for practicing knowledge management: codification and personalisation. Knowledge management is in this paper discussed from both perspectives in relation to case studies in small manufacturing firms. Results from this ongoing research project show that there are obstacles for using either of these strategies in small firms.

  • Consumption of nuts and seeds and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0020-7136 .- 1097-0215. ; 146:1, s. 76-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four epidemiologic studies have assessed the association between nut intake and pancreatic cancer risk with contradictory results. The present study aims to investigate the relation between nut intake (including seeds) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazards ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for nut intake and PDAC risk. Information on intake of nuts was obtained from the EPIC country-specific dietary questionnaires. After a mean follow-up of 14 years, 476,160 participants were eligible for the present study and included 1,283 PDAC cases. No association was observed between consumption of nuts and PDAC risk (highest intake vs nonconsumers: HR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.72-1.10; p-trend = 0.70). Furthermore, no evidence for effect-measure modification was observed when different subgroups were analyzed. Overall, in EPIC, the highest intake of nuts was not statistically significantly associated with PDAC risk.

  • Interferon-gamma cooperates with retinoic acid and phorbol ester to induce differentiation and growth inhibition of human neuroblastoma cells
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - : Wiley. - 0020-7136 .- 1097-0215. ; 94:1, s. 97-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prognosis of patients with advanced stages of neuroblastoma with N-myc amplification remains poor despite escalated therapy, a situation that has called for alternative therapeutic approaches. Neuroblastoma cells, which represent immature peripheral neuronal cells, treated with certain physiologic and nonphysiologic agents such as retinoic acid (RA), phorbol esters and interferons (IFN) in vitro undergo cellular differentiation and stop to divide, a process that mimics normal neuronal development. Such "differentiation therapy" using RA after autologous bone marrow transplantation has recently given encouraging results in neuroblastoma patients with advanced disease. Considering approaches for improved differentiation therapy, we investigated possible synergistic effects of combining agents known to influence neuroblastoma growth and differentiation in vitro. Our results show that combined treatment with IFN-gamma and RA or the phorbol ester 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol acetate (TPA) had synergistic or enhancing effects on morphologic differentiation and neurite outgrowth in 5 of 5 neuroblastoma cell lines, 3 of which expressed very high levels of N-myc mRNA due to N-myc amplification. The combinations RA+IFN-gamma or TPA+IFN-gamma also enhanced induced growth inhibition in all 5 cell lines, in several cases resulting in complete growth arrest under conditions where cells stimulated with either agent alone continued to grow. The phenotypic effects of the combined RA+IFN-gamma or TPA+IFN-gamma treatments were in most, but not all, investigated cases accompanied by moderate reductions in N-myc expression, suggesting that the cooperative signals may counteract N-Myc activity at several levels. The cooperativity between IFN-gamma and other differentiation signals may be relevant for approaches to improve the therapy for high-risk neuroblastoma with N-myc-amplification.
