- In this article, we highlight the importance of architectural repertoire, methods and tools to uncover basic components set by building science in performance-based regulation. This article elucidates the potential of architecturally-grounded methods when assessing daylight metrics often used in legislation and certification schemes, by rendering the daylight factor metric intelligible through geometry. The empirical material used comprises five architectural cases from 1917 to 2016. These five cases originate from an exhibition room on daylight presented in relation to architectural composition, historical changes in Swedish building regulation, and the 2014 daylight factor building code requirement. As in many other countries, building regulations in Sweden have undergone a historical change from prescriptive regulation to performance-based regulation. With regards to regulating daylight, this has meant replacing requirements based on geometrical relationships with abstract building science metrics. Additionally, we review these findings in relation to findings from a numerical analysis of 2014 daylight factor building code requirements from a larger number of Swedish residential buildings from the twentieth century. This article argues that architectural research based in drawings and geometrical relationships and case study material, whether historical or contemporary, can guide practitioners towards a new understanding of building code.

- The quest to make Sweden accessible for all has a long tradition. Stemmingfrom initiatives of charitable organisations in the early 20th century,accessibility became a physical requirement through the Swedish buildingact of the 1960s. It promoted a type of physical barrier-free architecturefor the welfare state. The socio-political ambitions of the 1970s propelledSweden to become a world-leading nation in the creation of equalopportunities and social inclusion. Architectural design was expected tomeet the demands of people with cognitive, physical or sensory disabilitiesand, on signing the UN convention on equal rights for persons withdisabilities in 2007, existing legislative frameworks were complementedwith additional guidelines on removing physical barriers. By focusing onthe national tripartite definition of accessibility, Sweden has paid littleattention to the development of the universal design concept. Instead,accessibility has been associated with the elusive concept of usability inorder to promote a user-environment fit. Since 2013, the increasing shortageof housing in densely populated areas has impeded work to createan accessible and inclusive welfare state and has fostered the notionthat accessibility increases building costs. This study provides an overviewof the Swedish development of accessibility in order to promoteparticipation and social inclusion by removing physical barriers in thebuilt environment and introducing user-oriented assistive technologies.

- With theglobal change crisis pushing – and new knowledge about sustainability in socio-ecological systems pulling – there presently is a window of opportunity to further our understanding about resilient landscapes. In this paper we focus on Green-blue infrastructure as a key component of human settlements. Our main focus is theoretical and conceptual but we also illustrate its values and functions to deliver recreation, preserve biodiversity, create urban structure, support cultural identity, provide ecosystems services and maintain primary production/recycling. We further elaborate on the potential for new interactions between green-blue- and built structures, discussing international cases of both practical and theoretical relevance. Resilient Citylands is proposed as a new concept useful for e.g. landscape architecture and planning. It represents a new reciprocal co-evolution for different scales: of urban and rural areas; of human settlements and natural ecosystems1, and of constructed and green-blue areas and elements within urban settings. We investigate how functionally dense, mixed-use, vibrant, inter-sensory and contemporary urban areas could be combined with cutting edge, lean and efficient rural areas.

- This article contains an exploratory survey of key determinants of future office workplaces, taking into account the current discourse on the subject, by framing the disparate knowledge on the subject in an office design context. The aim is not to present a full review of this wide field, which covers various disciplines and participants with different backgrounds. Instead, the aim is to present the subject of future workplaces and how it is debated in the various fields and the different perspectives applied to it, in order to make the subject easily accessible to architects and designers. This is achieved by gathering various discourses within the field and presenting these from a design perspective. This survey applies a triangulation approach, where knowledge is retrieved from three sources: practice, research and case study, from which interview data is utilized. A method that highlights and contrasts different aspects and perspectives on the subject. In addition to gathering this disparate range of discourse describing the future workplace, the primary result of this survey is the identification of six "shaping factors" that dictate the future office: 1) Generation Y, 2) Diversity of workforce, 3) Digital development, 4) Office, a meeting place, 5) Branding, 6) Flexibility. This article presents the relations between these six points as well as the potential risks and benefits from their combined and individual use. The article also aims to identify potentially important future topics to develop and study in office design, in order to be better prepared to meet the future.

- Sustainable housing renovation is often connected to broader transformation processes and a need of holistic approaches to deal with social, environmental and economic development. Architectural knowledge has been described as uniquely positioned to handle complex real-world problems by dealing with sustainability from a whole-systems perspective. In this paper, the role of the architect and the influence of architectural knowledge are explored in four cases of public housing renovation. The results show that most of the architects experience limited influence. The division of longer transformations into shorter projects under the direction of a series of architects rather than a single firm is a limiting factor, and public procurement another. Good experience is also reported from integrated design, suggesting that architects could play a productive role as educators of the design team. In order to fulfil that role, the architects might need to review their approach to sustainable renovation.

- An increasingly aestheticized society has inevitably changed architecture’s role and function. By some enthusiastically embraced as a longed-for recognition of architecture’s scenographic, artistic or entertaining potentials, this change has also given rise to a scepti- cism as to the role of slippery aesthetics and a subsequent recall of a more decent, tectonic “form-power”. But do architects necessarily have to be either uncritically engulfed by aesthetics or the obstinate defenders of a decent, but boring, alternative? A constructive answer to this question, however, requires a critique of aesthetics as formal or normative order, in favor of a performative, view of aesthetics as a means to do justice to a ‘disorderly’ world.

- Idag är det svårare än någonsin att frikoppla landskapet från det som kommit att kallas ”den globala bild- och teckenekonomin” (Lash och Urry, 1994); det världsomspännande ’mass-medierandet’ – förmedlandet av kulturella uttryck och utbytet av information. Ändå görs i daglig planeringspraxis ganska stora ansträngningar att med hjälp av landskapsbegreppet utveckla en immunitet mot dessa förändringar. I många policy- eller plandokument ses ’landskapet’ antingen som en överblickbar vy, ofta kopplat till ett bio-morfologiskt och/eller kulturhistoriskt skyddsvärde, eller som en regional intressesfär av agrikulturella, industriella eller rekreativa praktiker och bruksvärden. Oavsett vilket framstår det emellertid allt som oftast märkligt oberoende av en samtida medie-produktion. I det allmänna medvetandet däremot, är ’landskapet’ sedan länge också en mass-medierad företeelse. Även om det fortfarande ses som en allmän beteckning för ett geografiskt avgränsat ’natur-sceneri’ eller en ’hembygd’ (eventuellt uppdaterat till ’biotop’ respektive ’geografisk identitet’), uppfattas det lika ofta ur ett vidare kommunikations-, resande- eller flyktingperspektiv, vilket gör det på en gång både mera subjektivt och mera geo-politiskt laddat. Om land-skapet, som visuell auktoritet betraktat, tidigare har fungerat som en regional reglering av rumsliga spänningsförhållande, så är dess funktion i en globaliserad värld kanske snarare av-reglerande: Som -skap betraktat genererar det främst vad den amerikanske kulturantropologen Arjun Appadurai en ”imaginär ordning” (Appadurai, 1996), som på många sätt kreativt de-territorialiserar eller löser upp tidigare rumsliga föreställningar.

- Frågan om historisk förankring har blivit allt viktigare inom såväl arkitektur och landskaps- arkitektur som planering. Men att förankra en rumslig intervention bakåt i tiden, att motivera en förändring som historiskt relevant och där- för kvalitativt oklanderlig, är inte oproblema- tiskt. Ofta är en förankring förknippad med ett territoriellt hävdande av ett ursprung, en geo- grafisk ”vagga”, vars fortsatta existens anses nödvändig för utvecklandet av en etnisk eller nationell identitet. Ursprungsmiljöer, hembyg- der och historiska minnesmärken upplevs av många som hotade och måste återerövras, försvaras, skyddas. Som en rumslig problema- tik är ’förankringsrätten’ – möjligheten att inte bara historiskt knyta an till en plats utan också att kontrollera dess fortsatta betydelse – därför en av huvudorsakerna till territoriella konflik- ter, ett tecken på vad den amerikanske kultur- antropologen Arjun Appadurai kallat för en ”terminal crisis”:1 Det förflutna, som en svun- nen varaktighet, är idag inskrivet i en vidare berättelse av upplösning, hot och förlust, något som i sig tydligt markerar att det förlorat sin självklara entydighet.

Architectural potential of deconstruction and reuse in declining mass housing estates

- In Western Europe, many large housing estates have experienced spirals of intertwined physical and social decline. Such estates have wound up at the bottom of the housing hierarchy, which is manifested as high turnovers and vacancies. This qualitative multi-case study contributes to the research on the sustainable management of declining neighbourhoods housing stocks. The study learns from four individual cases in which vacancies were tackled with an extreme architectural transformation. In the investigated cases, large-panel buildings were partially deconstructed and renovated, and the reclaimed concrete panels were reused for new construction nearby. The approach integrates demolition, renovation and new construction - the three characteristic building stock management strategies in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The cases are located in Sweden (Gothenburg, 1984), the Netherlands (Middelburg, 1986), Germany (Berlin, 2004) and Finland (Raahe, 2010). Deconstruction was the landlords way to manage their assets in the face of vacancies and social problems in relatively young, unamortized buildings. The projects proved technically feasible, yet they have been criticised for their economic and social implications. Nonetheless, the approach seems to have contributed to extending the life cycles of the buildings in question, and it has the potential to improve the quality of life in large housing estates.
