  • Consolation of Literature as Rhetorical Tradition: Issues and Examples
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; 2015:4, s. 10-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates a tradition of consolation in order to explore rhetorical strategies and literary devices of consolatory texts. The aim is to elucidate how the view of consolation has varied through history and the impact of these variations on the motives for and the right to consolation. Issues dealt with are which sufferings that justified consolation, which kind of consolation that was accepted in an individual case, and which rhetorical means that were considered as appropriate. At first a theoretical and historical introduction will discuss the concept of consolation, its variants in tradition, and different states of mind considered in need of consolation. A special discussion concerns the condition of melancholy. Thereafter a few examples of consolatory rhetoric from various genres and historical periods will be analyzed, from Homer to Derrida.

  • Kritiskt tänkande i skolan. Betraktat genom radikal estetik, medialisering och en poetisk performance av Athena Farrokhzad
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; 8, s. 148-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last decade, the Swedish school system has been discussing the intersection between aesthetics and learning with much enthusiasm. The aim of this article is to show how this discussion can be invigorated by contemporary poetic practice, and how focus thus can be shifted from what Jan Thavenius has labelled »market aesthetics« and »modest aesthetics«, to what he labels »radical aesthetics«, i.e. an overriding aesthetics which is critical by nature, and therefore able to permeate the school system. Much contemporary poetry looks upon itself as a critical art form, at least as much as a creative one. The example used in the article – a controversial radio program, and poetic performance from 2014, by Athena Farrokhzad – uses poetry to highlight the ideological and religious discourses of con- temporary – »mediatized« – society. Appropriating the poetic methods she uses, and employing them meta-critically within the classroom, could bring the school system closer to Thavenius’s ideal »radical aesthetics«.

  • ATT GÖRA EN LÄSHANDLEDNING. Reflektionsvägar till litterär kompetens : Making a reading manual. Reflective routes to literary competence
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: LIR Journal. - 1102-9773. ; 8:8, s. 127-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to examine how students, coming upper secondary school teachers in Swedish, deal with issues concerning literary competence. The students’ conception is reflected in a digitally published exam paper namned ”Teacher’s manual to short stories”. The manual consists of 12 minor manuals written by 23 students and were being propduced during their fourth semester of literary studies. The students recommend teachers in upper secondary school to pay attention to literary reception as well as to the structure of texts. They also suggest that texts preferably could be read more than once and that interpretation should be supported by text examples.

  • Translation and untellability. Autistic subjects in autobiographical discourse
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; :6, s. 60-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the conditions for and reception of autobiographies by autistic persons from a critical disability perspective. Taking as a point of departure theories of narrativity where storytelling is seen as an essential human trait and narrative as a prerequisite for the construction of a self, the article discusses different modes of representing autistic subjectivity, in some cases contradicting these assumptions. In some of the “canonized” autistic autobiographies, the narrative script of overcoming autism is strongly present. The article shows how this is not merely an adaptation to the expectations of the audience, but also a method strategically employed as a means to avoid objectification and to gain agency. Although some autobiographical representations of autistic personhood resist having to translate their experience or language to fit the narrative script of disability, audiences tend to appropriate them into the expected narrative trajectory of overcoming, thus rendering alternative representations of autistic personhood unacknowledged.

  • Introduction: Western Esotericism and Literature
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; :12 (2020), s. 4-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • What is the relationship between Western esotericism and literature? This seemingly straightforward question formed the basis for a workshop held on May 4-5, 2017 at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion, University of Gothenburg. Organised by Henrik Bogdan and Dag Hedman, the participants included Karolina Enqvist Källgren (University of Gothenburg), Per Faxneld (Mid Sweden University), Christine Ferguson (University of Stirling), Christian Giudice (University of Gothenburg), Manon Hedenborg White (Uppsala University), Henrik Johnsson (Aarhus University), Sten Wistrand (Örebro University), and Andreas Önnerfors (University of Gothenburg). The question was approached from the perspectives of literature studies, history of religions, and history of ideas, and the examples discussed ranged from occultist authors such as Stanislaw Przybyszewski, Aleister Crowley, Dion Fortune, Jack Parsons, Kenneth Grant, traditionalist authors such as René Guénon and 20th-century philosopher María Zambrano, to well- known authors such as Marie Corelli, Gustav Meyerink, Gérard de Nerval, and now near-forgotten Swedish suspense fiction author Frank Heller. • Consolations of a New Earth
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; :4, s. 37-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a marginalized group, personal suffering is inescapably united to excluding social and political structures and situations. To provide consolation to an individual then also involves showing a way of how the group can escape its painful predicament, which in early Christianity took the form of an end times confrontation between good and evil; and the emergence of new heavens and a new earth. In science fiction literature, a variant on this theme of cosmic regeneration is the escape to an earth-like planet with the help of an interstellar space ship. An interesting recent case of such an offer of conso- lation in outer space is the novel, Voyage to Alpha Centauri, by Michael O’Brien, a contemporary Canadian author. The story is a commentary on the marginalization of traditional, especially Catholic, Christianity, and the growing strength of a liberal secular order.

  • Did somebody say political religion? Notes on an ideologeme
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; :No 3, s. 104-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article deals with the concept of »political religion«, a term often used to connote certain features of totalitarianism. The aim here is twofold. First, to summarize certain features within this discourse for critical analysis, via an initial naming of it as an ideologeme, a concept developed by Fredric Jameson. Second, the article attempts to show how the ideologeme of the politico-religious narrative or discourse can and has been used in a critical-theoretical agenda by exemplifying its use in the early work of Slavoj Žižek. I argue that certain features of the ideologeme open up for hermeneutical critical work on politi- cal ideologies through a confrontation with the growing and many-faceted discourse on political theology.

  • Performativity and the Construction of Children's Citizenship in Backa Theatre's Staging of Lille Kung Mattias (2009/2010)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; :9, s. 77-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to investigate and explain how performativity, as defined by J.L. Austin and Judith Butler, can be viewed as an important element within the narrative framework of Lille Kung Mattias (Little King Mattias), as performed by Backa Theatre in Gothenburg, Sweden, during the 20092010 season. Lille Kung Mattias, directed by Mattias Andersson, is based on the novel Król Macius ́ Pierwszy (1923) by Polish author Janusz Korczak, and has been performed for children aged 11 upwards. I explore how class, age and gender are »made« (and also fail to be made) performatively, and show how being a king is revealed as a performative act precisely then, when Mattias receives all the attire and the title but doesn’t move or talk like an adult king. Thus he fails to fulfil expectations. But thereafter, in terms that Butler uses, Mattias pushes the borders of what a king can be and do by iteratively »making« a new kind of king. In the end, the audience also change their behaviour by becoming an active part of the performance.

  • Former och funktioner i gestaltningen av övervakning och kontroll i 1600-talets musikteaterlibretti : Forms and functions in the representation of surveillanc and control in 17th century librettos
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; :10, s. 40-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A striking feature of 17th century musical dramas is the regular occurrence of motifs aiming to intensify the dramatic tension, such as espionage, surveillance, physical control and imprisonment. Through which forms are the motif complex of surveillance and control established in the libretti of the 17th century? What is its function? Did the audience perceive it as subversive or cautionary? The purpose of this article is to partly give a typological answer to these questions, and partly to discuss what functions the subject matter of surveillance and control could have had from the perspective of the powers that be and the audience/readers respectively. This investigation is based upon comparative close reading of more than 160 17th century English, French, Italian, Swedish and German libretti. Out of these 23 French, Italian, and German libretti have been chosen for closer examination.

  • Playing With Esotericism. Frank Heller’s Novel Andarna och Furustolpe (The Spirits and Furustolpe) and His Short Stories on Séances
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773 .- 2001-2489. ; 2020:12, s. 75-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Frank Heller (pen name of Ph.D. Gunnar Serner, 1886–1947) published suspense fiction from 1913 to 1947, mostly adventure stories, but also some in the crime genre and some science fiction. He had a keen eye for the potential of esotericism in connection with this kind of story. His first and foremost endeavour into this field is the »from-rags-to-riches«-novel Andarna och Furustolpe (1920), written in Venice (the author was evading the Swedish police since 1912, due to several successful bank frauds involving forged signatures of wealthy patrons). In Andarna och Furustolpe the war-profiteer Wenzel Furustolpe learns how to manoeuvre successfully in business by the deceased skipper Teelemainen, who communicates with him through different devices. In his esoteric short stories, like »Hades’ renässans« (1930) and »Spökguldet« (1932), Heller typically exploits séances, which are invariably fakes, and during which the point is to steal jewels or other valuable objects in the darkness of the room, or to hide messages or objects.

  • A new niche in children's literature. Norm-crit picture books in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; 17:9, s. 96-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The publishing of normcritical children’s literature is a relatively new literary phenomena in Sweden. This article aims to map the new literary niche in relation to ideological and cultural contexts. The main questions are: how are emancipatory ambitions manifested? Where do these ambitions leave the addressee? What norms are being (re)presented, challenged and/or consolidated, and by what means? The analysis shows a shift in the output of publishing houses away from more explicitly normcritical books that convey a pronounced pedagogy of tolerance in their presentation of same sex couples or alternative ways of doing gender, towards a less explicit questioning of norms and less familyoriented approach. Hence, there is an ongoing reorientation away from an initial emphasis on individualistic aspects and free will towards motifs like poverty, migration and death.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; 2013:3, s. 91-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since Karl Marx, studies of ideology have tended to treat religion as negatively ideological, as social cement hiding real conflicts. But throughout history religion has also been used as a resource for criticizing ideology. This paper investigates the latter function, combining a historical study of one religiously framed critique with a discussion of religion as ideology and critique. The focus is on the work of early Swedish communist Per Götrek, who was active during the mid-nineteenth century. I analyze four of his texts and summarize his Christian critique of society, going on to suggest that in a sociological definition of ideology, religion can function both critically as well as ideologically.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; :5(15), s. 88-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anne Charlotte Leffler’s play Elfvan (The Elf) (1880) depicts a young woman’s first alienating experience of marriage. The motif of the young woman’s difficulties to fit the role as the governor’s wife in a small Swedish town is connected to the motif of her growing up, including her first sensation of sexual desire. The aim of the article is to illuminate how the embodied experience of a young bourgeois woman is created in the play. The main character’s emotions and bodily sensations are highlighted. The analysis also deals with narration of the young girl’s desire to expose her uniqueness for others to recognize. It furthermore sheds light on the depiction of the emancipating power of the young girl’s access to her biography, which contributes to the widening of her narrow social space as a young bourgeois wife. In so doing Iris Marion Young’s and Adriana Cavarero’s different angles to feminist phenomenology are combined.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; 8:16, s. 82-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses geographical approaches in religious studies and how such approaches may be taken in the classroom. The point of departure for the discussion is scientific literature and experiences as a university teacher. It is argued that a geographical approach to teaching religion allows one to address »lived religion« and questions of religion’s materiality.

    • In this paper I explore a certain conception of ideology with the aim of situating the subject conducting intellectual work acting under given premises. A theory of ideology based on Paul Ricoeur’s work on the subject offers a frame in which ideology functions in a positive and negative manner, at the same time according to a fundamental structure. In the second half of the paper I discuss the notion of utopia as a way to move beyond ideology, or at least push its limits.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - Göteborgs universitet. - 1102-9773. ; :4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper suggests some ways in which the concerns of exis- tential psychotherapy may be combined with the practice of poetry therapy. It emphasizes the capacity of literature for inducing perspective-taking, i.e. the reader’s opportunity of experiencing the ongoing here and now of a fictional character, including the speaker of a poem. It goes on to show this pro- cess in action in four poems exemplifying, respectively, four different attitudes to the existential question of meaning and purpose in life: transcendental-optimistic (Erik Gustaf Geijer’s »Natthimmelen« / »The Night Sky«); transcendental-pessimistic (A.E. Housman’s »The Laws of God«); immanent-optimistic (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s »A Hymn to the Night«); and immanent-pessimistic (Tennyson’s »Oh Yet We Trust«). What- ever the stance of the poems, the reader grappling with exis- tential questions may take the perspective of the speakers of the poems, thereby finding solace in a shared experience of the human condition.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; 2015:4, s. 124-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article highlights a couple of fictitious speeches of dying persons, written by the 17th century philosopher, dramatist and author Margaret Cavendish. The speeches are included in her book Orations of Divers Sorts, Accomodated to Divers Places (1662), in which early modern society is displayed in various rhetorical situations. In the introduction Cavendish invites the reader on a tour through a metropolitan city, while eavesdropping on people talking. Her book is in a way a theatrical staging, which fits well with the Renaissance metaphor of “theatrum mundum”. Relating Cavendish’s intervention on this stage to early modern philosophical discussions on emotions and to the rhetorical genre as such, the article discusses how Cavendish conceived of the concepts of grief and comfort in her age.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773. ; 6:16, s. 7-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I strive for a conceptual clari cation and con- structive elaboration of the concept of existential health. Taking my cue from the multidimensionality of health – refer- ring to contemporary experience, the WHO de nition of health as well as pre-modern conceptions of health – I compare existential health to other concepts of health – i.e. physical, mental, social and spiritual. I argue that existential health should not be seen as yet another dimension of health – not even spiritual health, the most likely candidate as Valerie DeMarinis and Cecilia Melder, two prominent Swedish psycho- logists of religion, has argued – but rather is a re exive expe- rience of health. By »re exive« I mean an intentional relation to one’s own experience of ailment and health, including a relation to these experiences as one’s own. My conclusion is that existential health as a concept should be reserved for this re exive feature of human subjectivity in relation to health, cutting across all other health dimensions, so as not to confuse the conceptuality in speaking of health.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - Gothenburg : University of Gothenburg. - 1102-9773. ; 10, s. 28-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is hardly controversial to say that the Elizabethan play Sir Thomas More (1592–93?) is insistently preoccupied with issues of surveillance, control and punishment. In its depiction of the Ill May Day Riots in 1517 and the subsequent downfall of Thomas More, the play represents both More’s role as surveyor of the crowd and a victim of royal surveillance and punishment. However, in its twists and turns of plot Sir Thomas More transcends generalizations about penal justice. While not staging a “pre-panoptic” system of control, the play frequently but ironically thematizes surveillanceas an instrument of power, but it falls short of suggesting that surveillance produces pliable individuals. Instead, Sir Thomas More comes close to suggesting repentance rather than retribution as a model of justice, though this model is also made problematic through the character of Thomas More.
