    • The financial collapse of 2008, and its consequences of recession in the Eurozone and beyond, has exacerbated tensions at the heart of the postwar European project. The politics of austerity has provoked populist and far-right political responses, scapegoating migrants and minorities and increasingly calling the project of integration into question. In this essay I focus on responses by social theorists to the emerging crisis. In particular, I address the contrast between their reaffirmation of ‘European’ cosmopolitanism and their associated criticisms of multiculturalism, which, instead, is posed as a threat. In this way, while they challenge those who wish the dissolution of the European project, they do so at the expense of those seen to be internal ‘others’, whose scapegoating is one aspect of the populist threat to that integration. It is their failure to address the colonial histories of Europe, I argue, that enables them to dismiss so easily its postcolonial and multicultural present. As such, they reproduce features of the populist political debates they otherwise seek to criticize and transcend. A properly cosmopolitan Europe, I suggest, would be one which understood that its historical constitution in colonialism cannot be rendered to the past by denial of that past.

    • This introduction positions the essays in this special issue in relation to Pascale Casanova’s model of inequality and value in the world republic of letters. Arguing that the vernacular has been an overlooked or underelaborated concept in subsequent world literary theorizations, the essay then proceeds to discuss the shifting value and nature of the vernacular – a concept that only has meaning if it is understood relationally. Both the vernacular and world literature are therefore utilized as heuristic tools, enabling dialogues across entrenched linguistic, cultural and theoretical boundaries. Hence, the unorthodox combination of South African, North American, Indian, Swedish, Russian, Mozambican and Latin American perspectives presented here.

    • Wars and injustices can have wide-ranging reverberations. Colonialism ended – with a few exceptions – over fifty years ago, but there are still many traces left. In this essay I focus on two cases of atrocities under colonialism that have left scars in the present and my question is: how can a nation rectify for the long-term effects of an aggression? What is the appropriate ethical response? The two examples are the German genocide of the Herero tribe in 1904–1905 and the British war against the Mau Mau movement in Kenya in the 1950s. The examples are chosen because they both illustrate enduring claims for rectification after aggressions. After the presentation of these cases and of how Germany and Great Britain have responded, I discuss the meaning of rectificatory justice and criteria for reasonable claims for rectification.

    • Since the turn of the millennium, debates in postcolonial studies and world literature have repeatedly shown the realities of empire to be continuing, immediate and visceral. What has been overlooked thus far are the ways in which the bodily has re-emerged in postcolonial cultural production as a receptor to, and vocabulary for, these immanent violences. Fictions from across the global south are drawing with apparently increasing frequency on corporeal lexica in their imaginings of on-going imperial circumstances. At the same time, the new millennium has witnessed the rise, in multiple postcolonial contexts, of speculative genres - science fiction and horror pre-eminent among them - to which the body is central. Together, all of this suggests the need for renewed reflection on the poetics and functions of the bodily in contemporary fictional engagements with empire. This special issue takes up this imperative. Our interest lies with the grammars and technologies offered by the corporeal in postcolonial cultural production since the millennium, and in the possibilities and limitations of these bodily registers. Over the course of this introduction, we outline the material, narrative and theoretical contexts within which we see the body re-emerging as a site of renewed critical and literary or cinematic potential. We return to established analytical categories for the corporeal in postcolonial literary studies, and show that current fictional handlings of the body and embodiment appear resistant to interpretation via these rubrics. Taking our cue both from a materialist theoretical (re)turn that corresponds to the turn of the millennium and from aesthetic developments in literature and film of the same period, we go on to lay the groundwork for an approach to the body as this is currently emerging in contemporary postcolonial and peripheral imaginaries.

  • Recoding Paulina Chiziane’s Vernacular Poetics

    • This essay explores the gendered, geopolitical and material conditions of Mozambican literary migration into the contemporary Portuguese-speaking circuit, by paying special attention to the treatment of the internationally known writer Paulina Chiziane. More specifically, the essay addresses how vernacular features in Chiziane’s literary expression (e.g. a locally situated female perspective, oral narrative tradition, African cultural memory of myths and traditions, and use of national languages) are conceptualized and highlighted in the materiality of literary marketing and circulation processes. The analysis is theoretically informed by Venkat B. Mani’s thoughts on bibliomigrancy (whereby the circulation and translation of literary works performs a switch from one code to another, on travelling into new geographical contexts), and Ana Margarida Martins and Hilary Owen’s gender and postcolonial close readings of Chiziane’s early circulation paths. Furthermore, the analysis will consider how gender difference manifests itself in, and influences, the circulation processes. The study thereby traces how Chiziane’s vernacular poetics become recoded in circulation into other (niche) markets, from representing a counterhegemonic social critique in the local literary discourse, into an anthropological “authentic” (exotified) literature, written by a Lusophone African (black) woman in Portugal. In the Afro-Brazilian diaspora, Chiziane’s writing is recoded as African collective memory and epistemology underpinning social and cultural empowerment, while in translation her work is recoded as a more universally relatable narrative of women’s conditions under patriarchy in the cosmopolitan circulation.

    • This essay examines depictions of translation in three novels by contemporary translingual writers: Andre? Makine?s Le testament fran?ais (1995), Michael Idov?s Ground Up (2009) and Olga Grjasnowa?s Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt (2013). All three authors are native speakers of Russian who write literary works in a non-native language and thus belong to a growing number of translingual writers from the Russian Federation and the former Soviet Union. In each of the selected novels the narrator-protagonist is an immigrant who reflects upon the translingual condition, i.e. the practical and existential challenges of speaking, writing and living in a non-native language. Translation is intrinsic to the plots, characterization and themes of these novels, all of which depict language-switching in various contexts. The Russian protagonist of Makine?s Le testament fran?ais writes in French and resorts to the subterfuge of a pseudotranslation in order to get his books accepted by a Paris publisher. Idov?s Ground Up chronicles the business failure of a Viennese-style caf? in New York along with the narrator?s failure to realize the cosmopolitan ideal that it embodies. Grjasnowa?s Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt portrays the challenges faced by a polyglot interpreter who aims for professional mobility in a globalized world. In each of the novels, translation is associated with performance and deception, serving also as a metaphor for translingual experience. Drawing on Alexander Beecroft?s concept of ecologies of literature ? in particular, vernacular, cosmopolitan, national and global literary ecologies ? the analysis considers how these novels depict translation and circulation in various contexts, including everyday communication, business ventures and literary markets. I argue the fictional characters? ideals and approaches to language-switching can be understood in terms of vernacular, cosmopolitan and global modes.

    • This article examines the history of the ‘Eurafrican project’ as it evolved from the Pan-European movement in the 1920s to its institutionalization in the European Economic Community (EEC) (i.e. today’s EU) in the late 1950s. As shown in the article practically all of the visions, movements and concrete institutional arrangements working towards European integration during this period placed Africa’s incorporation into the European enterprise as a central objective. As so much of the scholarly, political and journalistic accounts at the time testify to, European integration was inextricably bound up with a Eurafrican project. According to the intellectual, political and institutional discourse on Eurafrica – or the fate of Europe’s colonial enterprise – a future European community presupposed the transformation of the strictly national colonial projects into a joint European colonization of Africa. Indeed, there is strong evidence to support that these ideas were instrumental in the actual, diplomatic and political constitution of the EEC, or of Europe as a political subject. The article discusses the conspicuous absence of these matters from scholarship on European integration and its historical origins and trajectory. It also notes that it is equally neglected in postcolonial studies, which should be able to provide the theoretical and historical tools to engage with the complex and instructive issues with which the Eurafrican project and its intimate links to the history of European integration confront today’s scholars.

    • The disciplinary fields of postcolonialism and world literature are currently engaged in some sharp exchanges over the global study of literature. With Mia Couto and Assia Djebar as its test cases, this article assesses and expands the debate. While postcolonial and world literature scholars clearly have some common ground, misunderstandings as well as disagreements prevail. More importantly, however, there are evident disciplinary blind spots on both sides that call for a combination of methodologies to account for literature as grounded in local, conflictual histories and as a circulational phenomenon that moves across languages and literary fields. Insofar as literature is a globally transportable institution, it cannot be understood exclusively in terms of political power and domination, but also as a world of its own and an enabling alternative to other domains of power. Conversely, the article argues, given the tensions between their subjective position and the transnational valency of literature, writers from colonies and postcolonies are of specific and paradigmatic importance to the theorization of world literature.

  • The Lure of State Failure A Critique of State Failure Discourse in World Politics

    • This article critiques state failure discourses from a poststructural and postcolonial perspective. We argue that these discourses are wedded to Euro-Western notions of the state and that, therefore, they fail to articulate other modes of political community to which we seek to open world political theory. First, we deconstruct prevalent state failure discourses to unearth the problematic character of their underlying commitments to a Eurocentric state. Second, we engage the way such discourses are deployed in the Failed States Index. Third, we propose an alternative account of why the Western model of the state has failed, explaining how the (neo)colonialist insistence on the propagation on this model enables the proliferation of violence conventionally attributed to state failure. Finally, we seek to open the notion of state failure to alternative forms of community obscured by the reification of the Western model of statecraft as the universal mode of political life.

    • In media and political representations, Muslims have been constructed as 'ultimate Others' who pose a threat to western human rights, democracy and freedoms. These representations, however, are gendered. Muslim men and women are positioned in ambiguous and contradictory ways: Muslim men are often represented as embodying a masculinity that is inherently misogynistic, controlling and dangerous and, more recently, associated with radicalization and Islamic terrorism, while Muslim women are presented as victims of patriarchy, passive and voiceless. This essay explores the complexities of the gendered social worlds of Pakistani Muslim men and women, and provides an intimate analysis of urban lives in 'postcolonial' Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK, through the narratives of young British Pakistani Muslim women about co-ethnic men.(1) Situated in their everyday lives, the essay explores how young Pakistani Muslim women at times adopt methods of 'strategic essentialism' to critique and resist co-ethnic men and masculinities. Adopting an interpretivist approach, this essay draws on research conducted with young Pakistani Muslim women in Bradford.

    • In this essay I explore the relationship between diasporic Palestinian memory and the politics of forgetting in post-dictatorship Chile. Drawing on ethnographic material from long-term fieldwork in Santiago, I argue that dual processes of remembrance and forgetting are central to a diasporic Palestinian politics that hinges on ideas of resistance and that always refers to the ongoing struggle of the Palestinian people, but that is also located within something of a memory void with regards to the recent Chilean past. The essay points to the paradoxical ways in which Palestinian-Chilean remembrance aiming to counter attempts at negation and erasure elsewhere often entails a compliance with the symbolic violence of a wider-reaching politics of oblivion in the Chilean era of post-dictatorship. By taking such an approach, I seek to nuance our understanding of the political dynamics of memory and to highlight the analytical potential in approaching diasporic practices at the intersection between local context and transnational points of reference.

    • After a short critical reflection on what is understood under anticolonial aesthetics and how it relates to the shift from political decolonization to a more epistemologically and aesthetically oriented decoloniality, the essay focuses on the seldom considered anticolonial and decolonial trajectories originating in the ex- and present colonies of the Russian/Soviet empire and post/neo-imperial Russia. It is analysed how these trajectories intersect with and diverge from the predominantly Anglophone and Francophone postcolonial conceptual and theoretical frames and what role is played in this configuration by the state socialist form of coloniality. Its most negative effects consist in recolonization presented as decolonization and the interrupted genealogies of anticolonial resistance and re-existence. As a result, each new generation has to start from scratch, while anticolonial thinkers and artists become enchanted by western (neo)liberalism presented as the only viable alternative to Russian and local authoritarian regimes.

    • As American publishing conglomerates and institutions have come to play an increasingly dominant role in world literature, dominant critical discourses tend to equate the "Americanization" of world literature with a process of aesthetic diminishment and devernacularization. This essay nuances and complements such accounts by focusing on the role of American independent publishers as curators of world literature. The "world literary vernacular" through which these presses construct world literary value contains five key elements: an insistence on modernist literary genealogies; an emphasis on regional (or at least subnational) attachments; an investment in oeuvres rather than in individual works or personal charisma as salient units of literary value; a decidedly unironic rhetoric that connects literature to a putative world republic of letters; and finally an emphasis on translatedness and the creative values of translation. The essay situates independent publishers as crucial participants in the contemporary world literature ecology.

  • The Dislocated Vernacular in Translated Swedish Working-Class Fiction

    • When a literary text is translated from a dominated to a dominating language, Yvonne Lindqvist (2018) observes, it generally undergoes a cosmopolitanizing process. Consecrated by the dominating literary culture, the text is lifted up to a transnational level and deemed significant for an international readership. Lindqvist’s observation is confirmed by the English translations of Swedish working-class novels from the 1930s, not only on a general level of distributional patterns but also in the books themselves: the new international contexts of the Swedish novels are underscored by positionings and comparisons in peritexts as well as in the details of the translators’ decisions. However, this adaptation to new audiences is first and foremost made possible by highly reduced local and regional specificities and a strengthened national space. The vernacular significance of the source culture is not lost but, rather, dislocated from the regional to the national. New dynamics between the vernacular and the cosmopolitan are thus created in which national boundaries are confirmed and heightened. This pattern illustrates the semi-peripheral position of Swedish in the world system of literary circulation. To reach international circulation, the semi-peripheral text aligns with the centre by confirming the notion of homogeneous cultural others.
