  • Betydelsen av verbal uppmuntran vid utförande av handstyrketest
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nordisk fysioterapi. - 1402-3024. ; 8:4, s. 145-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to evaluate if verbal encouragement had any influence on hand strength measurements. Twenty subjects participated in the study, all women aged between 20 and 62 years. A standardization of testing conditions and verbal encouragement was designed. Three measurements were conducted during 2 days using T.K.K 5401 Grip D. First there was a trial set, and then Test 1 (without verbal encouragement) and Test 2 (with verbal encouragement) were con-ducted. The results showed a significant improvement regarding the test results from Test 1 to Test 2. The subjects also answered a questionnaire about their feelings towards the two test occasions. A majority of the subjects felt that verbal encouragement had an influence on their performance. In conclusion, it could be said that verbal encouragement both had a subjective and objective influence on a subject's performance. In earlier studies, verbal encouragement has shown to influence different personalities in different ways. Thus, this would be an interesting field of study for future research

    • The municipality should offer good healthcare for those living in managed care facilities. This responsibility encompasses both rehabilitation as well as certain technical aids. The purpose of the study was to survey the work procedures of physical therapists in municipalities. A mail survey with questions regarding organization, work procedures, competence and job satisfaction was sent to 96 randomly selected physical therapists employed by Swedish municipalities. 70 physical therapists responded to the survey, which showed that the organization varies widely among different municipalities. However, a common denominator was a large territory with a large number of caretakers. The work of physical therapists largely consists of advising and educating personnel. They have a broad competence which is necessary and in demand but few decision makers know what physical therapists can contribute. Most physical therapists believe that they have a stimulating and meaningful work but that the resources are too scarce

  • Hur bör kvinnor med fibromyalgi bemötas på bäst sätt?
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nordisk fysioterapi. - 1402-3024. ; 6:3, s. 125-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Health care staff meet people with chronic pain, for example fibromyalgia patients, every day. The way they encounter and communicate with these patients is important. The aim of this study was to explore how fibromyalgia patients experience encountering health care staff and their own family. The study also included questions about their view of a positive encountering. Ten fibromyalgia patients were interviewed in a multiple case study. The results showed that all women had both positive and negative experiences of the health care system. They found it important for staff to listen actively, show interest and understanding, be professional and take their problems seriously. For a positive experience each encounter must be tailored individually. The women had all met negative attitudes from people in their environment. The ten women all experienced support from their families. Having the diagnosis fibromyalgia confirmed was described as being important, but could also be a difficult matter to handle. Hence, it appears to be of considerable importance to seriously reflect over and to understand the impact of acting and communicating as health care staff when encountering and treating patients.

  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Nordisk fysioterapi. - 1402-3024. ; 3:2, s. 65-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Kneeblocks are used to create a symmetric sitting position for individuals with different physical disabilities. The aim of this paper was to examine the impact of kneeblocks in children with cerebral palsy. Six children aged 4-13 years (mean 9 years) participated in the study. Pressure applied to the children's legs was measured with a computer aided system with waterfilled plastic bags and a pressure transducer with 2 Hz registration continuously during 3 minutes. The registrations were made in four difference sitting positions - horizontal sea and 5 degrees forward inclined, seat with and without a hipbelt, while the children performed different standardised tasks at a table. This was documented by videofile and photographs. The results were presented for the different sitting positions and tasks. The means pressure varied from 0.5 kPa in the sitting position with horizontal seat with a hipbelt to 5.2kPa in the position with 5 degrees forward inclined without a hipbelt. Occasionally pressure up to 24.5 kPa was measured. The kneeblocks did constantly exert pressure on the children's legs, but the pressure varied. If kneeblocks are used it should be in combination with a hipbelt, to minmise the pressure applied to the children's legs.

  • Windswept hip syndrome : en litteraturstudie
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nordisk fysioterapi. - 1402-3024. ; 5:3, s. 135-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Windswept Hip Syndrome (WHS) is a triad of hip subluxation or dislocation, pelvic obliquity and scoliosis. In cerebral palsy it is one of the most difficult deformities to control and treat and it predispose to poor, unstable sitting. The aim of this study was to describe literature concerning factors which contribute to the development, prevention and management of WHS. Literature based on articles found in Medline, Arbline, Spriline and via references 1983-1999, were used. Several factors contributing to the development of WHS were identified. The dislocated hip was commonly located on the raised side of the pelvis and the convexity of the scoliosis was opposite the raised side of the pelvic obliquity. There were different opinions concerning the temporal relationship between the development of the deformities. Secondary complications to WHS were pain, loss of function, difficulties with hygiene and nursing care. Correct positioning, increased weight-bearing, muscle stretching, strengthening exercises and use of orthosis were considered useful maneuvers in preventing the deformities. Surgery for developed deformities included soft tissue surgery, osteotomy and arthrodesis. The impetus should be to prevent the development of WHS from occuring, in order to avoid serious complications on many levels.

  • Reliabilitetstestning av den svenska versionen av Shoulder Rating Questionnaire, SRQ-S
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nordisk fysioterapi. - 1402-3024. ; 6, s. 134-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to evaluatethe test-retest reliability of theSwedish version of the ShoulderRating Questionnaire - SRQ-S.This self-rating scale comprises21 questions, divided into sevenweighted domains concerninghealth, pain, daily activities, recreationaland athletic activities, work, satisfaction and areas for improvement. The Shoulder Rating Questionnairewas fi rst translated intoSwedish and slightly adapted. Itwas then sent twice to 38 patientswith clinically stable shoulder disordersat an Orthopaedic Clinicin Sweden. The majority of theanswers were identical or almostidentical on both occasions. Theagreement of the total score wasexcellent (both rs and ICC=0.97).All domains, except ‘recreationaland athletic activities’, also showedan excellent agreement (rs 0.90-0.97, ICC 0.88-0.97). Individualquestions resulted in a very highweighted Kappa value for sevenof the questions (0.81-1.0), elevenquestions with a substantial value(0.61-0.80) and three moderatevalues (0.41-0.60). We concludethat the questions posed wereeasily understood and answeredand that the SRQ–S is test-retestreliable. These qualities wouldmake it a useful instrument for theassessment of the outcome of treatmentof shoulder disorders.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nordisk fysioterapi. - 1402-3024. ; 5:2, s. 50-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to describe how women with chronic heart failure (CHF) experience becoming ill, being ill and how they adjust to their new life situation. Qualitative interviews were carried out with 16 women with CHF (aged 4172 years). Interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis as a method. The content was sorted in three categories: To become ill, To be ill and To be a carrier of a chronic heart disease. To become ill was described by bodily discomfort, emotional experiences and contact with health care. To be ill was described through having troubles, to be in need of help and support, adaptation to the illness and to be scared. To be a carrier of a chronic heart disease was described by attitudes towards physical activity, attitudes towards cigarette smoking and a lifelong medication. These women describe their illness experience in various ways. Their descriptions confirm the earlier knowledge of consequences of CHF and also reveal new knowledge. This may increase our understanding of how it is to live with a chronic heart failure and this understanding can be used in planning the rehabilitation

    • This study describes the initial results of the rehabilitation for patients with cruciate ligament injuries. 569 patients entered the study, 460 could by analysed in detail. Four different protocols of physical therapy were used; 1. Functional (proprioceptive) training, 2. Isokinetic strength training, 3. Functional training with isokinetic training integrated throughout the entire period. All therapies were combined with modification of daily activities. Rehabilitation goals were set af 90% strength and function of the injured leg, in relation to the other side. Strength measurements were done in the Cybex-II-dynamometer. Knee function tests were done and Lysholm score were notes as well as Tegner activity scale. 60% reached the goal of 90% strength in knee-extension at 30beta/sec and 72% and 180 degrees/sec. 65% of the patients were classified as Excellent/Good in Lysholm score. 67% reached the goal in the 8-figure running-test, and 72% in one-leg-hop. 46%$ of the patients could return to their preinjury level of activity. 10% had a ligament reconstruction done. We conclude that physical therapy could be one alternative when treating patients with cruciate ligament injuries.

    • One purpose of this study was to describe how every day life is affected by using a wheelchair for residents of public nursing home facilities. A second purpose was to develop measurement methods for evaluation of seating and wheelchair functioning for elderly and to identify problems with elderly persons' seating position and/or wheelchair. 20 nursing home residents, age 71 to 95 (mean age 85 years), all wheelchair bound were videofilmed and photographed in a standardized manner while "driving" a fixed path indoors. The residents answered questions about how they experienced their wheelchair before and after interventions were implemented. Their driving skills and ability to transfer in and out of the chair was assessed according to an 8-point scale (FiR), developed for this purpose. A physical therapist and an occupational therapist analyzed seating positions and corrected numerous details on the wheelchairs. Six persons received new wheelchairs. The contact person of each resident was interviewed. Results showed that the elderly spent a large part of the day sitting in the wheelchair (mean 9 hours). At the follow-up, one month after concluding interventions, all residents experienced improvements in both seating position and wheelchair function. Responsibility for ordering and adjusting wheelchairs varied as did funding sources. A more rational order ought to be strived for.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Fysioterapi. - 1402-3024. ; 7:3, s. 32-48
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Timed Up and Go-test (TUG) measures balance/physical mobility. The aim of this review was to illustrate TUG's developmental steps, describe the different modifications of TUG and the efforts that has been made to test validity and reliability and finally in what other types of studies it have been used. A literature search in Medline and Cinahl was carried through and resulted in 100 abstracts that were analyzed and categorized according to their content. Some variants of TUG describe adding a manual or cognitive task and calculating the difference in time between TUG and TUG manual/ cognitive; diffTUG. Reliability and validity has been demonstrated to be high for older people. There is some disagreement regarding TUG's predictive value for falls. TUG has been used in effect-, survey- and correlationstudies, and as criterioninstrument as well as in reviews. TUG may in it's simplicity be recommended both in clinical environment and for research purposes, especially for older people.

  • Quadriceps- och hamstringsstyrka hos en grupp lagidrottande kvinnor 18-60 månader efter främre korsbandsoperation. En pilotstudie.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Fysioterapi. - 1402-3024. ; 9, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present pilot study was to investigate if there were any side differences in maximum isokinetic strength of quadriceps or hamstrings in a group of females who had resumed their pre-operative team sport after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Fourteen out of 142 eligible females fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Quadriceps and hamstring isokinetic strength was assessed at 60 º/sec and 120º/sec at two occasions. Three maximum trials were allowed at each speed and occasion and the highest torque obtained at each occasion was used for further calculations. With all females included in the statistical tests there were no significant side differences in muscle strength. However, three females showed a side difference of more than 20 % in two of the four strength tests. As it seems unlikely that this difference was caused by chance it points to the possibility of unsatisfactory strength rehabilitation in these three females having resumed sport activities with high demands on their operated knees. However, the results of the present study can by no means be generalized and have to be confirmed by a larger study.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Professional burnout has been shown to negatively affect human physiology regarding to the body stress response. Until present no scientific evaluated treatment is available. Research, however, point out that physiotherapy and physical training is an important part of the future treatment on this diagnosis. Research also suggest that knowledge from treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome could be used. In this diagnosis physical training and cognitive therapy is the only treatment that has shown evidence-based effectiveness.
