  • Projectile Coulomb-Excitation with Fast Radioactive Beams

    • We report a search for gamma rays emanating from Coulomb excitation of fast (30-46 MeV/u) radioactive projectiles He-8, Be-11,Be-12,Be-14 interacting with a lead target. These are clearly identified by their Doppler shift. The 320 keV 1/2(-) --> 1/2(+)gamma transition from Be-11 was observed with a cross-section of 191 +/- 26 mb which is noticeably less than expected from the known lifetime and in the perturbation limit of pure Coulomb excitation. In the other nuclei rather stringent upper limits of 0.01 to 0.2 Weisskopf units, are placed on the hypothetical transition to 1(-) states.

    • We have investigated the continuous particle spectra following the beta decay of the neutron-rich nuclei that terminate the mass 6, 8, 9 and 11 isobaric chains. Strong beta transitions feeding the very top of the spectrum are found systematically. The favoured states are within a few MeV of the energy of the initial state. This phenomenon seems to be linked to the occurrence of a di-neutron structure or neutron halo in the drip-line nuclei.

    • The proton-rich isotopes32Ar-35Ar represent the first sequence for which the superallowed Gamow-Teller strength is known out toZ− N=4. The results are compared with two sets of predictions from large shell-model calculations, which give systematically different quenching factors, on the average 0.54 and 0.89. Possible reasons for this are discussed. A comparison is also made with the Gamow-Teller strength of proton-rich isotopes of neighbouring elements.

    • Excited states of Te-108 were populated in the Fe-54 + Ni-58 (270 MeV) reaction using the NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged-particle and neutron detector systems for reaction channel separation. Gamma rays belonging to the neutron deficient nucleus Te-108 were identified for the first time. On the basis of gammagamma-coincidence and angular correlation relations a level scheme was constructed with tentative spin and parity assignments. The structure of the nucleus is discussed in the framework of systematics of heavier Te nuclei.

    • Proton rich nuclei close to Sn-100 have been investigated an-beam using the NORDBALL detector array. A beam of 270 MeV Ni-58 was used to bombard a Fe-54 target. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a 4 pi charged particle multi-detector set-up together with a 1 pi neutron detector wall placed in the forward direction. Gamma-ray transitions belonging do the I-111 nucleus were identified for the first time. A level scheme constructed from gamma-gamma-perticle-coincidence analysis is proposed. The level structure is discussed within the framework of the shell model and the systematics of the heavier odd iodine nuclei.

    • Beta-coincident gamma-rays have been measured from implanted pure samples of Be-12 separated at the LISE3 spectrometer at GANIL. An intensity of 0.040(26)% can be estimated for the branching ratio of the isospin forbidden pure-Fermi transition to the 0+ excited state of B-12 and of 0.008(6) % of the transition to the 1- excited state. Both are taken to represent upper limits. The halflife has been re-measured to be 26.1(2.4) ms.

    • High spin states in Cd-104 have been investigated by means of heavy ion induced reactions using the Nordball detector array. The level scheme constructed from yy-coincidences is dominated by three band structures, The positive parity band shows no rotational like energy spacing, It is thus understood mostly in terms of quasiparticle excitations with vd(5/2), Vg(7/2) and pi g(9/2) configurations, The collective properties of the negative parity bands are more pronounced. These bands are most likely due to v(h(11/2),d(5/2)) and v(h(11/2)g(7/2)) structures.

    • Excited states in 102Sn have been identified for the first time, in an in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic experiment. Two γ-ray transitions with energies 1472 and 497 keV following the decay of the seniority 6+ isomer with t1/2 = 1.0(5) μs were unambiguously assigned to 102Sn. Due to the very low cross section of about 2 μb for producing 102Sn in the reaction 50Cr(58Ni,1α2n), a highly selective detector setup utilizing NORDBALL ancillary detectors and a recoil catcher device was used. High γ-ray detection efficiency was achieved with two EUROBALL Ge cluster detectors.

The results are compared to shell-model calculations and good agreement is found except for Ne-29, where the half-life exceeds the predictions by more than an order of magnitude. This unexpectedly long half-life can be explained as due to a fp intruder configuration.

The splitting was determined to be 456.2(0.8) MHz, a considerably higher value than the one obtained in a recent level-anticrossing measurement. The new value is in good agreement with the result of a Hartree-Fock calculation, 460.2 MHz.

    • The scalar polarizability constanta0 for excitedS- andD-states in rubidium and cesium was measured utilizing a two-step excitation scheme. An rf lamp and a single-mode dye laser were used to excite the atoms in a collimated atomic beam. Values ofa0 were determined for the 9–102S1/2 and 7–82D3/2 states of rubidium and for the 10–132S1/2, 9–102D3/2 and 9–112D5/2 states of cesium. Further, the isotope shift was evaluated in the 5579 Å rubidium line. A review of experimental polarizability constants for rubidium and cesium is given, and the results are compared with theoretical values.

    • Natural lifetimes of some highly excited levels in the Pb-I spectrum have been measured by the zero field level crossing (Hanle) method. The levels were reached by optical excitation from the metastable 6p2 3P2 and 6p2 3P1 states, were a considerable population had been created by means of adc discharge in a Pb atomic beam. An atomic beam source producing atoms in metastable states is described. For the lifetimes t of the investigated levels we find:t(6p(1/2)6d3D1)=3.74(28) ns,t(6p(1/2)6d3F2)=25.8(1.3) ns,t(6p(1/2)6d3D2)=4.17(-31)(-49) ns,t(6p(1/2)6d3F3)=6.08(26) ns,t(6p(3/2)7s)3P2=5.85(27) ns. These results are compared with lifetimes derived from oscillator strengths given in the literature.

    • As a first application of optical double resonance and zero field level crossing spectroscopy to the elements of the sixth group in the periodic table of the atoms, the 5p36s5S2 level in the Te-I spectrum was investigated using natural tellurium in a high temperature quartz cell. For the electronic Landé-factor and the natural radiative lifetime the following values were obtained:$$g_J \left( {5p^3 6s^5 S_2 } \right) = - 1.9657\left( {12} \right),\tau \left( {5p^3 6s^5 S_2 } \right) = 71.8\left( {2.2} \right)ns.$$

    • High-resolution laser-spectroscopy measurements of hyperfine structure and isotope shifts were performed for the 6snd 1 D 2 sequence of Ba-I in the regionn=12–24. Stepwise laser excitations of a collimated atomic beam were used. A strong influence on the hyperfine structure is observed at the perturbation atn=14, caused by interaction with the 5d7d configuration. Whereas the isotope shift for the even isotopes stays essentially constant with increasingn, the odd isotopes exhibit a strong change, indicating hyperfine-induced shifts. Interesting discussions with Prof. E. Matthias in the final stage of this work are gratefully acknowledged. This work was supported by the Swedish Natural Science Research Council.

    • High-resolution laser spectroscopy measurements have been performed in the wavelength region around 4000 Å using a pulsed dye laser acting on a collimated atomic beam. Extra-cavity Fabry-Pérot filtering was used to achieve a narrow line-width of the laser light. Isotope shifts were measured in the 4216 Å and 4202 Å rubidium lines with the result ?s(87, 85)=124.3(4)MHz, and?s(87, 85) = 124.2(7)MHz, respectively, and in the 3988 Å ytterbium line with the resultds(176, 174)=-509(4)MHz, ?s(174, 172)=-530(4) MHz.

    • High-resolution laser fluorescence spectroscopy, using a single-mode dye laser acting on a collimated atomic beam, has been performed to determine the hyperfine-structure (hfs) constants in six states of the 6p 5d configuration of135Ba and137Ba. Isotope shifts (IS) for eleven transitions between the 6s 5d and the 6p 5d configurations have also been measured. From an analysis of the energy levels, intermediate angular wavefunctions have been deduced. The wavefunctions are used to evaluate experimental hyperfine parameters from the experimental hfs constants. The parameters are, for the magnetic-dipole interaction compared with theoretical values, and for the electricquadrupole interaction used to estimate the nuclear quadrupole moments for the odd isotopes.

Significant quadrupole interaction constants were obtained forn=6–9. The measured radiative lifetimes forn=6–12 scale withn*2.

    • Natural radiative lifetimes and LandégJ factors for several highly excitedF states in cesium were measured using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. TheF states were excited from the 52D5/2 state with a pulse-modulated CW dye laser, and the delayed-coincidence method was employed to record decay curves, which in some experiments exhibited Zeeman quantum beats. A further CW dye laser was used to produce the necessary population in the 52D5/2 state. The lifetimes in the sequence 11–162F7/2 follow anx scaling law withx=2.76 and the Landé factors agree with the predicted value, 1.143.

    • Resonance scattering of light as function of magnetic field has been used to investigate the hyperfine structure of the 4p2P3/2- and 5p2P3/2-terms in the potassiumI-spectrum, using a sample enriched in the K40-isotope. With increasing magnetic field strength a structure containing two characteristic signals for K40 was observed. Taking into account the small ratio of hyperfine structure splitting to radiation width, these signals could be interpreted as an overlapping of three level-crossings. The line shape and magnetic field strength of these signals can be understood by taking for the magnetic interaction constantsA40(4p2P3/2)=(-7.59±0.06) Mc/s,A40(5p2P3/2)=(-2.45±0.02) Mc/s and the electric quadrupol coupling constantsB40(4p2P3/2)=(- 3.5 ±0.5) Mc/s,B40(5p2P3/2)=(-1.1± 0.2) Mc/s usinggJ=4/3. The values ofB/A yield withSternheimer corrections for the nuclear electric quadrupolmomentQ(K40=-0.07 · 10-24 cm2.

  • Precision determination of the fine-structure splittings of the 5d and 6d states in potassium

    • The fine-structure splittings of the inverted 5 and 62D states of potassium were measured by observing level-crossing signals at high magnetic fields. TheD levels were populated using step-wise excitations, employing two CW tunable dye lasers. For the fine-structure intervals dW we find: dW (5d)= -15,102.0 (5) MHz anddW(6d) = -7,965.8 (6) MHz. These values are about 100 times more accurate than previous results for these states. An expression is given, describing the fine-structure splittings in the sequence of potassium2D states.

    • By combining recent level crossing data with the results from a modified atomic beam experiment by Buck, Rabi, and Senitzky in 1956, a Landégj factor deviating about 0.6% from the LS-value -1.3341 is obtained for the 6p2P3/2 level of Cs133. As this large deviation is difficult to explain, a remeasurement of the hyperfine structure of this level was performed by the zero field optical double resonance method. For the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole interaction constantsa andb we obtain$$a(6p{}^2P_{{3 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {3 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} ) = 50.31(5)MHz,b(6p{}^2P_{{3 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {3 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} ) = - 0.30(33)MHz.$$ With these new values agj factor of -1.3341 (15) is deduced for the 6p2P3/2 level of Cs133, in agreement with the LS-value.
