  • Innovations in aged care: the aged care pain chart : an innovative approach to assessing, managing and documenting pain in older people
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Australasian Journal on Ageing. - Oxford : Blackwell Publishing. - 1440-6381 .- 1741-6612. ; 27:2, s. 93-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the development and initial testing of a comprehensive pain chart for the assessment, management and documentation of pain in older people in subacute and residential aged care. The pain chart was developed from existing assessment scales and pain indicators, and is targeting needs of older people in residential care and geriatric hospital settings with high prevalence of cognitive impairments. The chart is based on self-report of pain but allows for observation of pain-related behaviours for those unable to report pain. The chart consists of one evaluative and one documentation dimension, and was evaluated by a group of clinicians in geriatric hospital care (n = 15) and residential aged care (n = 6). The chart was found to be content valid, informative and easy to use, facilitating clinical assessments and monitoring, and assisting visual readings of patients' temporal pain trends.

  • Factors associated with refraining from buying prescribed medications among older people in Europe
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Australasian Journal on Ageing. - : Wiley. - 1440-6381 .- 1741-6612. ; 33:4, s. 25-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AimTo evaluate the associations between refraining from buying prescribed medications and selected factors among older persons.MethodsA total of 4467 people aged 60–84 years from seven European countries answered a questionnaire (response rate 45.2%). Refraining from buying prescribed medications was measured with the question: ‘Have you ever refrained from buying prescribed medication and care?’ResultsAbout 11.9% of older people refrained from buying prescribed medications. The multiple regression analysis showed that ages 60–64 (odds ratio (OR) = 2.08; 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.38–3.13) and 65–69 (OR = 1.73; 95%CI: 1.16–2.57) years, experience of financial strain (OR = 1.59; 95%CI: 1.27–2.01), as well as exposure to abuse (OR = 1.64; 95%CI: 1.31–2.06) when taking into account country of participant were independently associated with refraining from buying medications, while an opposite association was observed for being male (OR = 0.72; 95%CI: 0.58–0.91).ConclusionsThe study has revealed that refraining from buying prescription medications is a problem among older people and it has identified a number of factors associated with this.

  • Fit for purpose? : Designing HR organisations and HR departments in project-based organisations
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human Resources Development and Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1465-6612 .- 1741-5160. ; 10:4, s. 327-361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper makes three contributions: 1) it suggests a conceptual separation between HR organisation and HR departments to better comprehend the challenges facing HRM in project-based firms, 2) it identifies two configurations of HR departments to advance the comparative analysis across project-based organisations, and 3) it offers a model and a set of propositions to determine the organisational conditions influencing the design of the HR organisation and the HR department. The paper emphasises the importance of the character of functional coordination and type of project participation for the design of the HR organisation and HR department.

  • Strategic fit framework of succession planning : effects on career attitudes and career success
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human Resources Development and Management. - 1465-6612 .- 1741-5160. ; 15:2/3/4, s. 233-257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study proposes a framework for aligning business strategy and succession planning and assesses the impact of the degree of fit on employee career attitudes and perceptions. Using configurational perspective of strategic human resource management, this study develops a strategic fit framework of succession planning. The framework of succession planning includes four kinds of configurations among strategy, organisational structure and succession planning culture that lead to positive career attitudes and a higher perception of career success among employees. Gathering data from 152 employees within 23 enterprise agencies, the paper empirically validates the developed framework. Results suggest perception of with the promotion process.

  • Lean leadership : A matter of dualism
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human Resources Development and Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1465-6612 .- 1741-5160. ; 14:4, s. 242-253
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On the basis of previous literature, this study takes a snowball approach to identify people influential on the topics through their writings. The aim was to conceptualise leadership and management in regard to lean, thus increasing understanding of the roles of leadership and management in lean development. The findings showed that leadership and management are two different but complementary action systems, similar to the duality of Toyota's two foundational principles: respect for people and continuous improvement. Differentiating between leadership and management is important in order to meet organisational needs during a lean implementation; each has complementary functions. Practical implications include the need to further train managers in leadership and to work within organisational culture to influence on-the-job behaviour. This lack of leadership competence may be one reason companies tend to address lean as a toolbox rather than an enterprise-wide system that covers all its operations and entails cultural and behaviour standards.

  • 'Healthy organisations' : developing the self-managing employee
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human Resources Development and Management. - 1465-6612 .- 1741-5160. ; 16:1/2, s. 82-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyses literature and studies of work place health promotion. It draws on human capital theory to develop the thesis that over and above its ambition of furthering employees' bio-medical health, work place health promotion seeks to make up employees that are able to self-manage their lifestyles and selves as human capital. As such, the paper suggests, work place health promotion emerges as an important source of authority and power in contemporary working life, which has largely been overlooked by the majority of studies of organisational health. While the ambition to further employees' health is basically positive, the paper suggests that WHP is still a potentially precarious activity because it tends towards subordinating not only work, but also life in general to principles of management and performance.

  • Using Activity Theory in system development for entire organisations: the case of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human Resources Development and Management. - 1465-6612 .- 1741-5160. ; 2:3-4, s. 308-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Activity Theory has, in recent years, been criticised for not paying enough attention to the notion of individual versus collective subjects. It has also been pointed out that even though the Activity theoretical framework can beneficially be used in the development of information systems, actual attempts to apply it to concrete projects are only occasional. This study explores the use of Activity Theory in an organisational context where the subject is of marked collective nature, in an information systems development project for the Swedish National Trade Union Confederation (LO). Both implications of the study as regards the specific trade union application, and more general implications of applying Activity Theory to studies of entire organisations and for system development, are discussed.

  • Setting the stage for innovation: towards a conceptual model of the HR-innovation link
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human Resources Development and Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1465-6612 .- 1741-5160. ; 16:1/2, s. 100-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article shows that human resource management (HRM) and human resource development (HRD) activities play a potentially important role in facilitating innovation in organisations. Based on previous research, a conceptual model is presented that displays how an organisation's human resource (HR) function can facilitate innovation by securing and developing the HR supply chain to ensure the healthy and continuous flow of personnel and competence into, within, and out of the organisation (i.e., by securing the appropriate competences for the job and the organisation, by developing and retaining existing competences, and by transferring competences from employees who are leaving to those who remain in the organisation). This article argues that HR practitioners can set the stage for innovations by actively and strategically implementing HR activities that support the creation of an expansive learning environment in which both adaptive and developmental learning can occur.
