  • Magnitude and associated factors of perceived stress and its consequence among undergraduate students of Salale University, Ethiopia : cross-sectional study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Routledge. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 26:10, s. 1230-1240
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excessive stress may have a negative impact on students' performance and learning ability. The aim of this study is to assess the magnitude and associated factors of perceived stress and its consequences among undergraduate students at Salale University, Ethiopia. A self-administered cross-sectional study has been conducted among 421 students of Salale University from April 1(st) to May 30(th), 2018. Multiple linear regressions and Spearman's rank correlation were applied. The overall response rate is 95.49 %. The mean perceived stress score (PSS-14) was 29.97 (standard deviation =7.48). Spearman correlation test has shown that perceived stress is significantly but negatively correlated with grade point average [r(s) = -0.25 (-0.334 - -0.153)] and year of studies [r(s) = -0.13 (-0.232 - -0.032)]. Increased perceived stress indices are significantly associated with female gender (P < 0.001), grade point average (P < 0.01), academic stressors (P < 0.01), and psychosocial stressors (P < 0.01). Mean of PSS-14 was high among health science students (31.42 +/- 9.37) than agricultural (30.78 +/- 7.69) and business students (28.04 +/- 5.43), however, there were no statistically significant differences. These findings are sufficient to allow a large-scale study to further help better understanding the stress-vulnerability factors of undergraduate students.

  • Dimensions of perfectionism and tinnitus distress
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 10:1, s. 78-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated the relationship between perfectionism and tinnitus distress. In addition, associations between perfectionism, sleep problems and anxiety/depression were investigated. The study included 256 tinnitus patients who completed measures of perfectionism, tinnitus distress, anxiety, depression, and a measure of insomnia. Gender-differentiated multiple regression analyses showed that anxiety and depressive states were related to tinnitus distress for both genders. However, for the males, the perfectionism subscale Personal Standards was related to tinnitus distress, whereas in females, it was the Organization subscale that was most predictive of tinnitus distress.

  • Situational patterns in coping with primary Sjögren’s syndrome
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1465-3966 .- 1354-8506. ; 6:1, s. 29-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The complexities involved in primary Sjögren’s syndrome (primary SS) were examined by designing and testing an instrument for evaluating the occurrence and severity of various biopsychosocial stressors as perceived by primary SS patients (63 women, 6 men) and at examining the situational patterns involved in appraising and coping with stressful episodes. The results indicated symptoms of fatigue, eye discomfort, dryness of the mouth and sleep disturbances to be particularly stressful. Women were found to be more likely than men—and patients with less education more likely than those with higher education—to report a stressor as occurring and experiencing it as stressful.

  • General self-efficacy and health-related quality of life after myocardial infarction
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Routledge. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 17:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fatigue after myocardial infarction (MI) has been found to be distressing. A person's self-efficacy will influence his/her health behavior and plays an active role in tackling illness consequences. This study investigated associations between fatigue, disturbed sleep, general self-efficacy, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a sample of 145 respondents admitted to hospital for MI two years earlier. The aim was to identify the predictive value of general self-efficacy and to elucidate mediating factors between self-efficacy and HRQoL. General self-efficacy measured four months after MI was positively related to HRQoL after two years. In tests of indirect effects, fatigue meditated the effects between self-efficacy and the physical and the mental dimension of HRQoL, respectively. The indirect effect of disturbed sleep went through that of fatigue. To conclude, patients who suffer from post-MI fatigue may need support aimed at helping them increase their self-efficacy as well as helping them adapt to sleep hygiene principles and cope with fatigue, both of which will have positive influences on HRQoL.

  • General and condition-specific measures of coping strategies in persons with spinal cord lesion.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 10:3, s. 231-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examined psychometric properties and validity of a general (Ways of Coping Questionnaire; WCQ) and a condition-specific (Spinal Cord Lesion-related Coping Strategies Questionnaire; SCL CSQ) measure of coping strategies. The sample included 181 community-residing traumatically spinal cord lesioned persons aged 16-85 years. Multi-trait/multi-item analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and multiple regression were used. Reliability and validity estimates were acceptable in most instances for the SCL CSQ, whereas the validity of the WCQ was inadequate. The SCL CSQ showed a significant relationship with the overall quality of life outcome measure, whereas the WCQ did not. We recommend condition-specific measures of coping strategies, and that the combination with coping style measures be tested in medical populations.

  • Do shame and perfectionistic self-presentation explain the link between early affiliative memories and eating psychopathology?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 23:5, s. 628-634
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study tested a model examining the impact that early affiliative memories (both with family and peers) on eating psychopathology, and whether these links are carried by the mechanisms of external shame and body image-related perfectionistic self-presentation, in a sample of 480 female college students. Path analyses' results revealed that this model accounted for 48% of disordered eating's variance and suggests that the lack of early positive emotional memories is associated with higher levels of shame (feelings of inferiority and unattractiveness), and with higher tendency to adopt body image-related perfectionistic strategies, that seem to explain excessive eating concern and rigid control of one's eating behaviors. This study offers important insights for future research and for the development of intervention programs, by revealing the importance of assessing and targeting shame and perfectionistic strategies and suggesting the importance of promoting adaptive emotion regulation strategies.

  • Trait self-control, exercise and exercise ambition : Evidence from a healthy, adult population
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 25:5, s. 583-592
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores if self-control predicts exercise ambition and actual exercise, and if exercise ambition predicts actual exercise. Members and guests at a not-for-profit sports club were invited to participate. 264 individuals completed a self-reported (Self-Control Scale) measure of self-control, and responded to questions about actual exercise as well as exercise ambition prior to their workout. Main Outcome Measures are exercise ambition, actual exercise, and the difference between them. We find that trait self-control predicts both actual exercise and exercise ambition. Exercise ambition also predicts actual exercise. The results suggest a path from self-control, via exercise ambition, to actual exercise. Individuals with relatively low self-control might benefit from some aid in setting goals for their workouts and committing to exercise.

  • Exploratory factor analysis of the Modified Somatic Perception Questionnaire on a sample with insomnia symptoms
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - London : Routledge. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 14:1, s. 62-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the factorial solution of the Modified Somatic Perception Questionnaire (MSPQ) among individuals with insomnia symptoms in the general population.Design: A cross-sectional study with a randomly selected sample from the general population (N = 3,600; 20-60 year old) was used. In total, 251 of the 2,179 respondents fulfilled the criteria for insomnia symptoms and filled out a survey on demographic parameters, the MSPQ, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, sleep medication use, and health care consumption. Methods: Exploratory factor analysis and correlations were used. Results: The results showed that a two-factor solution, accounting for 47.31% of the variance, was extracted from the 13 items of the MSPQ. While one factor consisting of 10 items determined general symptoms of somatic arousal (a = .83), the other factor with 3 items assessed stomach symptoms and nausea (a = .78). The two factors were significantly inter-correlated (r = .54) and significantly associated with the total MSPQ (r = .96, r = .74). The two factors also showed discriminant validity with anxiety and depression and predictive validity with retrospective reports of sleep medication use and health care consumption. A few significant interactions emerged the two MSPQ factors and degree of sleep complaints. Conclusions: Although it is often assumed that the MSPQ taps a single factor of somatic arousal, this study on individuals with insomnia symptoms suggests that a two-factor solution has the best fit. Further research on the factorial solution of the MSPQ is warranted.

  • Tinnitus Stages of Change Questionnaire : Psychometric development and validation
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 11:4, s. 483-497
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study describes the development of the Tinnitus Stages of Change Questionnaire (TSOCQ), which aims to assess the readiness of tinnitus patients to change their behaviors and attitudes in relation to tinnitus. Its ability to predict treatment outcome was also investigated. One hundred and fifty-one patients with tinnitus completed the questionnaire. Through repeated principal component analyses, together with judgments of the factors' theoretical relevance, empirically and clinically meaningful scales were derived. A factor solution in accordance with the transtheoretical model (TTM) and with acceptable psychometric properties was found with the five scales of the TSOCQ labeled Precontemplation (Medical Solution), Precontemplation (Helplessness), Contemplation, Preparation and Action/Maintenance. Participants scoring high on Precontemplation (Helplessness) and low on Action/Maintenance had better treatment outcomes. In conclusion, the TSOCQ had some ability to predict treatment success, but further research is required into the utility of the TTM for understanding the rehabilitation process in tinnitus patients. © 2006 Taylor & Francis.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 28:2, s. 316-323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a preventable disease, skin cancer is a public health issue in Austria. Most sun-safety studies focus on people’s activities in summer, but little is known about sun-protective behavior in winter. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this study examines psychological perceptions among people who engage in winter sports in Austria. Following a TPB-based belief elicitation study, a consequent survey was conducted among 114 participants (51.8% female; Mage = 29.54 years) in South Austria. Intention, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and risk perception showed strong and significant associations with sun-safe behavior among people who engage in winter sports. The TPB framework explained a large portion of variance in sun-safe behavior (75%) and intention (73%). Gender differences have been identified in TPB-variables as well as several beliefs. Based on the utility of the TPB, our findings suggest guidelines for sun-safety in winter sports settings. Gender differences are in line with previous research, highlighting the vulnerability of men to sun damage during winter sports.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 7:2, s. 117-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this study was to investigate the prospective impact of vital exhaustion on recurrence after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in women. Women ≤ 65 years, mean age = 55.30, SD = 7. 63, N = 110, consecutively admitted to a coronary care unit with AMI were examined after three-six months, and followed for five years. Vital exhaustion was assessed using an early version of the Maastricht Questionnaire. A recurrent event was defined as cardiac death, AMI or a revascularization procedure. Forty-five recurrent events were found (in 41% of the study group). One standard deviation (8.4 points) increase of vital exhaustion scores was associated with a 53 % increased risk of a new event and a score above the median was associated with a hazard ratio of 2.24 (95% CI 1.21-4.14). These results remained after adjusting severity of chest pain and significant coronary stenosis. In conclusion, it was found that vital exhaustion is a marker of poor prognosis in women with AMI. The relationship appears to be independent of signs of underlying disease, including severity of chest pain and significant coronary stenosis.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 19:3, s. 316-323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the aim to better understand the association between asthma/allergy and psychological distress, it was hypothesized that levels of stress, exhaustion, anxiety, depression, and health worries for environmental pollution would be higher in allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis than in non-allergic asthma and in referents without asthma or allergy. Taking part in the population-based Vasterbotten Environmental Health Study (aged 18-79years), 76 respondents reported a physician-based diagnosis of allergic asthma, 86 reported non-allergic asthma, 190 reported allergic rhinitis, and 46 reported atopic dermatitis as the only form of asthma/allergy. A group of 2876 respondents without an asthma/allergy diagnosis constituted as referents. The participants responded to the Perceived Stress Scale, the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Environmental Pollution subscale of the Modern Health Worries Scale. Levels of stress, exhaustion, and anxiety were higher in allergic asthma and atopic dermatitis than in non-allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and among referents, and there was a strong tendency of such group differences for depression and health worries. The results imply that stress reduction and treatment of negative affect may in certain cases be fruitful interventions in patients with atopy.

  • Factorial validity and measurement invariance of the Revised Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP-R) in three countries
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Psychol Health Med. - 1465-3966. ; 16:1, s. 115-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The revised physical self-perception profile (PSPP-R) was constructed to measure both perceived competence and importance linked to domains of the physical self. In the present study, we tested the factorial validity of the PSPP-R, using confirmatory factor analytic approach, on samples of university students from three different countries: Sweden, Turkey, and the UK. Multi-sample covariance structure analyses were also used to test the invariance of the PSPP-R across the three national samples. First-order four-factor models, including the latent factors of sport competence, physical conditioning, body attractiveness and physical strength, demonstrated good-fit with the data both for competence and importance factors. Second-order factor models, incorporating the second-order latent domain factor of physical self-worth also exhibited good-fit with the data. Factor patterns and covariances were invariant across samples for both competence and importance scales. Item intercepts were also invariant for the importance scales, whereas partial invariance of intercepts was supported for competence scales. The results are discussed with reference to the validity of the original physical self-perception profile and cross-cultural studies on the physical self.

  • Do ratings of African-American cultural competency reflect characteristics of providers or perceivers? : Initial demonstration of a generalizability theory approach
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 15:4, s. 445-453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Provider cultural competency is often identified as an important component of effective ethnic minority healthcare. However, there is limited knowledge of the manner in which cultural competency judgments operate. This study sought to provide an initial demonstration of a hitherto overlooked methodology for examining the extent to which provider cultural competency ratings reflect characteristics of providers, differences among perceivers, and also idiosyncratic pairings of specific perceivers and providers. Second and third year medical residents rated four attending physicians for cultural competency when treating African-American patients. Using a Generalizability Theory approach, cultural competency ratings were shown to most substantially reflect unique perceiver and provider pairings (47.0% relationship effect). However, cultural competency also strongly reflected differences among resident raters in their tendency to perceive attending physicians as culturally competent, regardless of the characteristics of physicians (35.0% perceiver effect). Although cultural competency significantly reflected the characteristics of providers this effect was small (3.0% provider effect). This study demonstrates an overlooked methodological approach and suggests important new directions for conceptualizing theory and research.

  • Individuals and illnesses as sources of perceived preventability
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 14:3, s. 322-330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Perceived preventability of illness is an important predictor of health behaviour and response to illness. Yet, health experts remain largely unaware of the extent to which preventability attributions reflect characteristics of persons, illnesses and their interaction. Quantifying the sources of variance that compose illness preventability attributions may be especially useful for designing effective preventative health interventions. In the present study, we used generalisability theory to examine the sources of variance in illness preventability attributions. Undergraduate college students (N = 44) rated the personal preventability of 12 well-known physical illnesses. Preventability attributions were shown to most substantially reflect characteristics of illnesses (57.5% target effect). However, preventability attributions also strongly reflected interactions of individuals and illnesses (26.0% relationship effect). Characteristics of individuals were also significant, although they explained a relatively smaller amount of variance (7.1% perceiver effect). In general, these results suggest new directions for conceptualising theory and research on perceived preventability of illness.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 20:5, s. 582-593
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Younger people with heart failure often experience poor self-rated health. Furthermore, poor self-rated health is associated with long-term sick leave and disability pension. Socio-demographic factors affect the ability to return to work. However, little is known about people on sick leave due to heart failure. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between self-rated health, mood, socio-demographic factors, sick leave compensation, encounters with healthcare professionals and social insurance officers and self-estimated ability to return to work, for people on sick leave due to heart failure. This population-based investigation had a cross-sectional design. Data were collected in Sweden in 2012 from two official registries and from a postal questionnaire. In total, 590 subjects, aged 23-67, responded (response rate 45.8%). Descriptive statistics, correlation analyses (Spearman bivariate analysis) and logistic regression analyses were used to investigate associations. Poor self-rated health was strongly associated with full sick leave compensation (OR = 4.1, p < .001). Compared self-rated health was moderately associated with low income (OR = 2.6, p = .003). Good self-rated health was strongly associated with positive encounters with healthcare professionals (OR = 3.0, p = .022) and to the impact of positive encounters with healthcare professionals on self-estimated ability to return to work (OR = 3.3, p < .001). People with heart failure are sicklisted for long periods of time and to a great extent receive disability pension. Not being able to work imposes reduced quality of life. Positive encounters with healthcare professionals and social insurance officers can be supportive when people with heart failure struggle to remain in working life.

  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 28:4, s. 884-894
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite sleep disturbance and somatic symptoms being common health complaints, the relationship between these disturbances and single somatic symptoms is not well documented. The objectives of this study were to (i) identify somatic symptoms that are particularly associated with sleep disturbance, here referred to as somatic symptoms related to sleep disturbance (SS-SD), (ii) determine increased risk of sleep disturbance for each SS-SD and for a certain number of SS-SD, with and without controlling for anxiety and depression, and (iii) determine sensitivity and specificity for identifying sleep disturbance based on number of SS-SD in a general Swedish sample. Population-based, cross-sectional data based on validated questionnaire instruments were used from participants who constituted a sleep disturbance (n = 864) or a reference (n = 2340) group. Among 15 common somatic symptoms, stomach pain, back pain nausea/gas/indigestion, dizziness, and constipation/loose bowels/diarrhea were identified as SS-SD, with odds ratios of increased risk of sleep disturbance that ranged from 1.93 to 2.44 (1.36–1.79 and 1.54–1.91 when controlled for anxiety and depression, respectively). The risk of sleep disturbance increased by 1.44 times for each SS-SD (1.25 and 1.30 when controlled for anxiety and depression, respectively). A cutoff of two/three or more SS-SD had a sensitivity of 72.5/54.2% and a specificity of 50.0/69.7% for identifying sleep disturbances. When patients present with these somatic symptoms with or without a pathophysiological explanation, primary care clinicians may consider screening for sleep disturbance.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Psychology Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 26:6, s. 771-778
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cleft lip and palate (CLP) affects a person's facial appearance and can cause appearance-related distress. Appearance-related distress and its manifestations are not fully understood. Women with CLP tend to experience a higher degree of distress as well as undergo more aesthetic revisions than men. The aim of this study was to investigate if self-reported appearance-related gender differences occur among adults born with unilateral CLP using the Derriford Appearance Scale 24 (DAS24). One hundred sixty two consecutive patients, 107 men and 55 women, with unilateral CLP and no associated syndromes treated at the same hospital were asked to answer the DAS24. A mixed methods approach was used to analyse the questionnaires both quantitively and qualitatively. Fifty men and 30 women participated, the results showed that the aspects of appearance considered most disturbing was cleft-related among both genders, most common in regards to the nose. Three themes were found: acceptance, cleft features, and general appearance issues. The quantitative part showed that women reported higher appearance-related social anxiety and avoidance than men. This study demonstrated that appearance-related distress is present in both genders; however, women expressed more distress than men. Moreover, non-cleft as well as cleft features are of importance for self-reported dissatisfaction.

  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1465-3966 .- 1354-8506. ; 15:4, s. 434-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many aspects of human physiology and behavior are seasonally related. Although there are many studies using self-ratings of, for example, subjective health and stress, few involve adjusting effects for seasonal differences. To estimate the need of adjusting for season in field studies, 24 healthy men and women were studied in a design that required them to fill in questionnaires on one workday every month, for 12 consecutive months. The results showed that ratings of stress were higher during winter and early spring, but only in the early afternoon and not in the morning or the evening. While some subjective health complaints were rated higher during winter, the ratings of energy and self-rated health did not vary throughout seasons. This concludes that seasonal variations may be a source of bias in questionnaire studies. Yet, further studies are needed to more definitely sort out which phenomena and self-rating measures that co-vary with season.

  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 28:10, s. 2825-2831
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study examined whether people’s consideration of consequences (future vs. immediate consequences; CFC) can predict physical activity behaviour (PAB) and, to explore key mechanisms that may underline such association. To that end, participants (N = 128) filled in standardised measures of CFC and PAB, and questionnaires of health regulatory focus, attitude and intention as mediators of the CFC–PAB association. Regression analysis revealed that CFC-immediate was negatively associated with PAB, and that health regulatory promotion focus and intention were both positively associated with PAB. Mediation analysis revealed a significant effect of CFC-future via health promotion focus, attitude, and intention on PAB. Findings are discussed considering both susceptibility and buffering hypotheses. CFC-future buffers against self-control failure because it is associated with a promotion focus and with both more positive attitudes and stronger intentions towards PAB. Interventions promoting a physically active lifestyle should foster people to value and become aware of the future consequences of their actual PAB. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

    • Abstract: Personality traits were assessed in 63 patients with persistent allergic or non-allergic rhinitis with the Karolinska Scales of Personality, developed with the aim of measuring psychobiological vulnerability factors, and were compared with a reference group comprising a random sample of 400 sex- and age-stratified subjects. The patients' personality profile differed slightly - within one standard deviation - but significantly from the reference group on a number of factors together suggestive of a disinhibitory disposition, an inclination to express anxiety through somatic rather than psychological channels, difficulties in maintaining emotional distance to others, and a limited awareness of aggressive affect, a pattern that suggests that they expose themselves to more stimulation than they can process in terms of thought and feelings, generating sustained physiological arousal that may contribute to the development of their intolerance reactions.

  • Comorbidity in allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis : functional somatic syndromes
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 22:10, s. 1163-1168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on the concept of central sensitisation, the present study tested the hypothesis of comorbidity in allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis with diagnoses of functional somatic syndromes (FSSs), including fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and migraine. Data were used from the population-based Västerbotten Environmental Health Study (n = 3406). The participants consisted of 164 individuals with allergic asthma and 298 individuals with allergic rhinitis as well as 2876 individuals without allergic or non-allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis or atopic dermatitis. Diagnoses were based on self-reports of having been diagnosed by a physician. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated from binary logistic regression analysis, both crude and adjusted for age and education. The adjusted ORs (1.87–4.00) for all FSSs differed significantly from unity for both allergic asthma and rhinitis. The results provide support for the hypothesis of comorbidity in allergic asthma and rhinitis with FSSs. Since central sensitisation is likely to underlie FSSs, the present findings raises the question as to whether central sensitisation may also be involved in allergic asthma and rhinitis.

  • Predicting positive mental health in internally displaced persons in Indonesia : the roles of economic improvement and exposure to violent conflict
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 21:3, s. 286-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Positive mental health, rather than just the absence of mental illness, is rarely investigated among the internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by violent conflict in low-income countries. The purpose of this study was to investigate a model that could explain the interrelationship between factors contributing to positive mental health in displaced populations. In a longitudinal study we examine poverty, exposure to traumatic events and the change of material well-being after one year. We collected data in two consecutive years (2005 and 2006) from a community-based sample of IDPs in Ambon, Indonesia, through face-to-face structured interviews with consenting adults. Participants of this study were IDPs lived in Ambon during the violent conflict period. We interviewed 471 IDPs in the first year and reinterviewed 399 (85%) of the same subjects in the second year. The IDPs possessed good sense of coherence and subjective well-being. Our final model, which was generated by the use of structural equation modeling, fits the data well (chi(2)=52.51, df=45, p=.21, CFI=.99, RMSEA=.019). Exposure to violent conflict had a negative impact on IDPs' mental health initially and better economic conditions improved it (r=-.30 and .29 respectively). Mental health status one year previously was a strong predictor of future mental health, followed by individual economic growth in the past year (r=.43 and .29 respectively). On a group level the IDPs were resilient and adaptive to survive in adverse living conditions after devastating violent conflict, and the economic improvement contributed to it.

  • Identity formation in adolescents and emerging adults with type 1 diabetes.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Psychology, health & medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1465-3966 .- 1354-8506. ; 25:5, s. 519-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study investigated identity formation in adolescents and emerging adults with type 1 diabetes and its relation to psychological and diabetes-specific functioning. As diabetes management is especially challenging in these life periods, identity problems may not only hamper psychological adjustment, but could also impact diabetes management. A total of 431 patients were 1:1 matched with control participants, based on age, gender, and context (student, employed, other). To investigate identity types or statuses, cluster analysis on different identity processes was conducted, resulting in six statuses. Patients in foreclosure and achievement (both characterized by strong identity commitments) presented with the most adaptive functioning. Patients in troubled diffusion and moratorium (both characterized by a maladaptive type of exploration) showed the least adaptive scores on well-being, diabetes-specific problems, treatment adherence, and illness-perceptions. The present study underscores the importance of assessing identity issues in youth with type 1 diabetes.

  • Predicting smoking behavior : intention and future self-continuity among Austrians
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 27:5, s. 1042-1051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smoking is a major public health problem in Austria, but relevant research and intervention is limited. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the present study aimed to test the model utility in an Austrian sample. As future self-continuity is likely to impact on health behavior, we also hypothesized an extended TPB with future self-continuity could further explain the variance in smoking. Using a prospective design, 94 current smokers (74.5% women; Mage = 24.27 years; 61.7% daily smokers) from a university in South Austria completed the baseline and follow-up survey (one month after the baseline). Consistent with the TPB, intention and perceived behavioral control (PBC) significantly predicted smoking behavior; affective attitude and PBC were significantly associated with smoking intention. In contrast, cognitive attitude and subjective norm were unrelated to smoking intention. As hypothesized, the TPB explained 42% variance of smoking behavior and 31% variance of smoking intention. Participants' future self-continuity further explained the variance of smoking behavior. Our study demonstrates the utility of the TPB in understanding Austrian smoking behavior. The role of psychological perception of future self among smokers has been highlighted. Future smoking intervention may target PBC, affective attitude, as well as a life-span perspective.

  • Protective health behaviors and fear of social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic : a public opinion perspective
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Psychology, Health & Medicine. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1354-8506 .- 1465-3966. ; 28:10, s. 2953-2963
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When coronavirus disease (COVID-19) news along with protective health recommendations first came to people’s life, such ambiguous information became a public opinion. Performing protective behaviors can be regarded as an approval of the majority opinion as people have to alter their established health positions and practices. So far, the association between public opinion and protective health behaviors is unclear especially in the pandemic context. This study utilized a survey data collected between 1 and 10 April 2020 in Germany (n = 101), Austria (n = 261), Switzerland (n = 26), and China (n = 267). We compared the protective health behaviors between the Chinese and European participants, as well as examined the associations between the protective health behaviors, peer influence, and fear of social isolation. Protective health behaviors were found similar between Chinese and European participants, although being independent from peer influence and fear of social isolation were related to protective health behaviors in the Chinese sample. Our cross-national findings are consistent with previous studies, suggesting that both official and unofficial health communication show stronger influences in Asian populations. Findings from this study provide advice for public communication strategies to promote protective health behaviors during pandemics.
