  • Development of a new approach to guided self-help via the Internet : The Swedish experience
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 26:2-4, s. 161-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes the development and empirical status of guided Internet-delivered self-help. The treatment approach combines the benefits of bibliotherapy with book-length text materials and the support given online via web pages and e-mail. Interactive features such as online registrations, tests, and online discussion forums are also included. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) guided the research and clinical implementations of this approach, as it lends itself more easily to the self-help format compared with other presently available psychotherapy approaches. We include an overview of the research, current issues and research in service delivery, lessons learned through a program of research, and directions for future investigations

  • Approaches to welfare technology in municipal eldercare
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Routledge. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 38:3, s. 226-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Welfare technologies have been proposed in Scandinavian countries as way to ensure accessible and efficient care to those who need it. Significant investments have been made to develop and deploy these technologies. This study used a multiple case study design to explore how welfare technologies are implemented in Swedish eldercare practices. The multiple case study generated detailed knowledge and insights from a broad perspective on the employment of welfare technologies within various municipalities. The study revealed three approaches for integrating welfare technologies into municipal eldercare services: as an end-product, as a project, and as a strategy. Findings indicate that municipal welfare technology practices are diverse and multifaceted, yet implementing such practices is a complex process. This study proposes a focus shift, from technological solutions to organizational context, eldercare personnel, and care receivers.

  • Elderly People's Perceptions of a Telehealthcare System : Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Complexity and Observability
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 31:3, s. 218-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of telehealthcare systems to promote independent living for elderly people is growing. The results presented in this article, derived from an initial user lab test of a telecare system-GiraffPlus-indicate that the crucial factor for adoption of telehealthcare systems is not usability but the system's ability to support autonomy in everyday life. Eleven users tested the usability and reported what they perceived as possible benefits of having such a system at home. To support autonomy, customization is crucial for the system to be perceived as meaningful for the individual. Our analysis confirms previous research. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

  • Making techno-economic rationality work : tensions in technology-enabled social service evaluations
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Routledge. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 42:1, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contemporary welfare organizations engage in various evaluation practices to assess the quality of their services. In this paper we report a qualitative exploration of how technology-enabled evaluations are understood by organizational members who participate in quality assurance activities in Swedish social services. The study contributes to critical information systems literature, focusing on the tensions professionals experience in relation to the digital systems they use for evaluations. For example, "quantities" take precedence over the qualities of such work, as information systems constrain ambitions to realize knowledge-based social services. The results reveal three tensions in professionals' evaluation-related activities arising from conflicting uses or desires. One is between desires for flexible systems that enable reflection and standardized digital support systems. Another is between uses or desires for indicators that are meaningful at the operational level and for general, comparable measures at the management level. The third is between desires to use evaluation procedures for learning and control. The study contributes to both theory and practice related to technology-enabled evaluation of welfare services, and critical perspectives on information systems.

  • An exploratory study of health professionals' attitudes about robotic telepresence technology
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 29:4, s. 263-283
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the results from a video-based evaluation study of a social robotic telepresence solution for elderly. The evaluated system is a mobile teleoperated robot called Giraff that allows caregivers to virtually enter a home and conduct a natural visit just as if they were physically there. The evaluation focuses on the perspectives from primary healthcare organizations and collects the feedback from different categories of health professionals. The evaluation included 150 participants and yielded unexpected results with respect to the acceptance of the Giraff system. In particular, greater exposure to technology did not necessarily increase acceptance and large variances occurred between the categories of health professionals. In addition to outlining the results, this study provides a number of indications with respect to increasing acceptance for technology for elderly.

  • The ongoing and collective character of digital care for older people : moving beyond techno-determinism in government policy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 40:4, s. 357-378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we contrast policy understandings of digital care with older people’s day-to-day digital care. In doing so, we discuss problems relating to deterministic approaches in government policy. Our policy analysis shows that digital care is articulated as an individual practice, and digital technologies as static actors. This bears clear marks of techno-deterministic reasoning. Our ethnographic study demonstrates the ongoing and collective character of older people’s digital care. When policy is not aligned with everyday practice, there is a risk of excluding groups of users. We argue that a socio-technical approach in government policy could contribute to achieving important societal goals.

  • Caregivers' use of robots and their effect on work environment : a scoping review
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 40:3, s. 251-277
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the lively discussion on the pros and cons of using robots in health care, little is still known about how caregivers are affected when robots are introduced in their work environment. The present scoping review fills this research gap by mapping previous studies about the relation between robots in care and caregivers’ working life. The paper is based on searches in four databases for peer-reviewed articles about robots in care settings, published 2000 to 2020. The 27 included papers were examined with the questions of 1) how robots are used by caregivers, and 2) how robots affect caregivers’ work environment. The analysis shows that the use of robots can affect both the physical and the psychosocial work environment, in positive as well as in negative ways. Robots are used in care settings to reduce physical and mental demands of the caregivers, but they can, in fact, increase caregivers’ workload. Thus, the review indicates that robots can improve the quality of work, but that they seldom work as a shortcut to increased efficiency or time effectiveness.

  • Employing creative research methods with tweens in Estonia and Sweden : Reflections on a case-study on multimodal virtual identity constructions
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 30, s. 250-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we discuss our experiences from setting up workshops, inspired by creative research methods (Gauntlett, 2005, 2007), on the theme of construction of online identities by young people (aged 13–14 years) in Estonia and in Sweden. Our primary focus is on the opportunities and possible challenges involved when using creative research methods to study the identity construction process of young people by engaging them in participatory, creative activities. Our experiences indicate that such an approach can be especially beneficial when working with young people, as it enabled us to observe the actual construction and usage of gender codes and norms, both in the offline peer group context and in an online setting.

  • Challenging the roles of “skilled” professionals and “risky” young mothers : peer support, expertise, and relational patterns in Facebook groups
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 35:3, s. 247-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, many countries spend a great deal of money and effort on programs for expert-guided parenting support to be carried out in face-to-face groups. One goal of such support is to target, help, and educate “risky” groups of parents, such as young parents. It is striking, however, that young parents have a conspicuously low degree of participation in this type of parenting support. Drawing on the assumption that many young parents go online to seek, give, and receive peer parenting support, this paper presents a case study of activities within three Facebook groups. Using a combination of social network analysis, online ethnography, and interviews, we analyze how social network relationships and discussions differ depending on whether the analyzed Facebook group in question is administrated by professionals or peers, what the role of professional experts is, and how young parents might use social media to take control of their own support needs. Our results indicate that some of the affordances provided by Facebook might contribute to a challenging of the roles of “skilled” professionals versus “risky” young parents.
