  • Framing Ethnicity in Initial Teacher Education: A Focus Group Study with Student Teachers
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IDENTITY-AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF THEORY AND RESEARCH. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to explore how student teachers experienced the framing of ethnicity in initial teacher education in Sweden. Ten focus group discussions were conducted (N = 42; 21% minoritized ethnic background). An inductive thematic analysis was used. The findings showed that ethnicity was framed as mainly concerning "others" and that it was framed as sensitive. The current framing of ethnicity suggests that initial teacher education does not prepare student teachers to support positive youth ethnic-racial identity development. The findings highlight a need for student teachers, and teacher educators, to explore their own ethnic-racial identities through critical discussions that challenge notions of ethnicity as something that concerns "others". Furthermore, the findings highlight student teachers' and teacher educators' needs for structured support in how to critically engage in "sensitive" discussions. Further, the results illustrate how the framing of ethnicity resonates with aspects of social identity theory and with the postcolonial concept "othering".

  • Facing Challenging Experiences in Life – Narrative Identity Development Processes and Associations with Wellbeing During the Transition to Midlife
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Identity. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 24:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates identity development in narratives of difficult experiences and associations with wellbeing in the transition to midlife. The narrative processes of emotional sequencing (i.e. emotional tone of how people frame their experiences: redemptive, neutral/vague, negative, and a combination of positive and negative) and positive and negative impact on the identity (i.e. how people perceive the impact of the narrated event) were examined in narratives about difficult experiences in early adulthood (Mage = 33.28, SD=0.54) and midlife (Mage = 38.62, SD =0.61). Results concerning emotional sequencing showed two typical patterns one of stability in neutral/vague sequencing, and another pattern of change from a combination of positive and negative to redemptive sequencing. Furthermore, positive and negative impact in early adulthood was associated with wellbeing in midlife. Findings in this study show that people who are neutral in their way of framing challenges maintain this outlook on life’s difficulties in the transition to midlife. The results also indicate that perceived negative impact of narrated events, and not only positive impact, in early adulthood has bearing on wellbeing during midlife.

  • Ta Det Onda Med Det Goda (Accepting the Bad that Comes with the Good) - A Cultural Framework for Identity Narratives of Difficult Experiences in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Identity. An International Journal of Theory and Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 20:3, s. 157-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the nature of narrating experiences of difficult life events among Swedish young adults. We use the master narrative cultural framework to understand how narratives of difficult experiences are told. Building on extant work on the importance of the narration of difficult life events for identity and wellbeing, we examine how these stories are narrated in the Swedish context in relation to well-being. Identity narratives about life challenges were collected from 116 participants (Mage = 33.28, SD = .54, n = 58 women). Employing an open-exploratory approach, four equally prevalent emotional sequences were found: redemptive sequencing, neutral/vague sequencing, a combination of positive and negative sequencing, and negative sequencing. No differences were found in the use of the first three emotional sequences for well-being, but the negative sequencing was generally associated with poorer well-being. This study shows that there are several ways to narrate difficult experiences in the Swedish context, and sheds light on how culture informs narrative identity.

  • "Being stuck between two worlds": Identity configurations of occupational and family identities.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Identity. An International Journal of Theory and Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 19:4, s. 330-446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most research on identity has focused on either identity processes or identity content, neglecting how individuals structure their identities. We investigated how individuals negotiated their sometimes conflicting multiple identifications of work and family into different types of workable identity configurations. We also examined differences across configurations in the gender distribution, degree of conflict, and life satisfaction. Through a mixed methods approach, a community sample of 124 young Swedish adults (50% women, Mage 33.29 years) were interviewed about work and family priorities and completed a rating scale measure of life satisfaction. The qualitative analyses showed six different types of identity configurations, the most common being Family first, followed by Everything is important, Struggling to prioritize, Now family comes first, Inability to prioritize, and Work first. The quantitative analyses showed few gender differences across configurations, but there were differences in conflict and life satisfaction between configurations. The findings from this study reflect the complex and dynamic ways identity is structured within a cultural context.

  • Identity Status, Gender, and Social Comparison Among Young Adults
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Identity - An International Journal of Theory and Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 17:4, s. 239-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate identity status globally and across identity domains among young Swedish adult women and men. Also, potential differences in social comparison among identity statuses were evaluated. The results showed that most of the 124 participants (50% women, Mage 33.29years) were assigned to an achieved global identity and had made identity-defining commitments across domains. Gender differences in identity status were found in the occupational and parenthood domains. In addition, differences in social comparison orientation were found only in the parenthood domain, whereas those assigned to moratorium scored higher in social comparison than did those assigned to foreclosure and diffusion. These results bring important knowledge to our understanding of identity during young adulthood.

  • “It’s a New Chapter Now”: Establishing Commitments in the Romantic Domain during Young Adulthood
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Identity. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 20:1, s. 37-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This longitudinal study examines identity development in the domain of romantic relationships during young adulthood and what the process of establishing commitments without exploration in this domain involves. Identity status in the romantic relationships domain was assessed for 118 Swedish individuals at the ages of 29 and 33, using the Identity Status Interview. Identity diffusion was less common at age 33 than at age 29, whereas foreclosure, moratorium, and identity achievement were equally common at both ages. The majority of those assigned to identity diffusion at age 29 had transitioned to identity foreclosure by age 33. These nine participants were selected as a subsample for further analysis of the process of commitment-making, and changes in their identity narratives between age 29 (before establishing commitments) and age 33 (after establishing commitments) were examined using case-based thematic analysis. The results suggest that the commitment-making process involves changes in identity content, such as having more elaborate and positive views on romantic relationships, as well as changes related to identity processes, including narrating one’s experiences and views concerning romantic relationships in a more temporally integrated way.

  • Politicians’ blogs : strategic self-presentations and populist identities – a case study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Identity. An International Journal of Theory and Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 12:3, s. 247-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The empirical material of this article consists of a blog section that organizes the blogs of mainly local and regional politicians in the north of Sweden. The aim of the article is to examine the content and style of blogs written by politicians and, especially, how the blogs can be understood in terms of self-presentations and articulations of identities. A further aim is to discuss the political and democratic aspects of such articulations. The article argues that even though the investigated blogs are somewhat innovative, they have a traditional character in a political sense and reproduce a populist identity. This identity goes beyond the boundaries between different political parties and represents a hindrance in relation to the democratic renewal that is often ascribed to political blogging in general.

  • “The Most Exotic was the Owner of the Pizzeria” : Exploring the Relationship between Subjective Diversity and Ethnic identity
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Identity. An International Journal of Theory and Research. - : Routledge. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 23:2, s. 109-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to examine how Swedish youth a) experience diversity and b) link those diversity experiences to their identities. Using a mixed-method approach, we coded written narratives for type of diversity experience, meaning-making, and analyzed qualitative differences due to the proximity of the setting and self-defined in- and outgroups. Out of 197 participants (age 15-29), 63 (31.5%) wrote about diversity in their narratives, and of those, 55 (87%) derived meaning about themselves or others. Qualitative differences were found between participants who self-identified with a majority, minority, or mixed ethnic identities. Youth who identified with a majority identity generally experienced being in the majority in the macro-setting while a lack of diversity in their micro-settings, and mainly derived meanings related to the ethnic identities of others. Youth who identified with minority or mixed ethnic identities, experienced being the minority in both micro- and macro-settings, and mainly derived meanings related to their own ethnic identity, such as enhanced identities or issues of belongingness. Results suggest that experiences of diversity trigger ethnic identity development, however, in a segregated society with unequal opportunities and power relations, those experiences and how they inform ethnic identity significantly vary significantly due to background.

  • Family Identity and Deviations from the Master Narrative in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Identity. An International Journal of Theory and Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 23:2, s. 137-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the content of family identity among people in Sweden, a country often portrayed as relatively free from traditional family norms. More specifically, we investigated the types of family-related narratives that individuals shared, narratives of deviation from the master narrative of what was expected and accepted in Swedish society. In addition, the identity centrality of the themes was investigated. The data covered 462 participants, 170 of whom – 139 women, 30 men, and one non-binary (Mage = 20.11, SD = 4.85) – had family-related narratives. We identified six themes of deviating narratives, of which the family-related narratives had significantly higher identity centrality than did the non-family-related narratives. Not only do the present findings emphasize the importance of family for people’s identities, but they also illustrate the complex and multilayered aspects of family identity. The master narrative discernable in the participants’ narratives of deviation portrays ideals of the happy, white, secular, middle-class, heteronormative nuclear family, even though this does not always correspond to the actual lived situations of families in contemporary Sweden.

  • Identity Development and Romantic Relationships in the Late Twenties
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Identity. An International Journal of Theory and Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 16:1, s. 24-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This two-wave study investigates identity processes and content in identity interviews concerning romantic relationships, and how this is related to involvement in romantic relationships in the late twenties. Results revealed that the four identity statuses were equally common at age 25 (N = 136) as they were at age 29 (N = 124). Although 54% were stable in identity status, 46% changed identity status between measurements. Stability in identity status was a typical pattern for all identity statuses, except moratorium. Overall, the content in individuals’ identity narratives seemed to express a strong norm concerning attitudes and expectations of romantic relationships. The few associations between identity status and identity content indicated a somewhat stronger adherence to norms in the foreclosure group and a somewhat lesser adherence to norms in the diffusion group. Involvement in a romantic relationship was more common among individuals who, at age 29, had established commitments and who viewed involvement in romantic relationships as an important life goal. The study illustrates how considering identity processes and content may lead to a deepened understanding of identity development within salient domains.

  • Effect of polymeric additives on calcium carbonate crystallization as monitored by nephelometry
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth & Design. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1528-7483 .- 1528-7505. ; 4:3, s. 479-483
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of polymaleimide polymers on calcium carbonate crystallization was studied using nephelometry. Induction time and percent growth inhibition were determined for polymeric additives from the nephelometric data. The polymaleimide synthesized by KOH-initiated polymerization exhibited the greatest growth inhibition and longest nucleation time among the polymers investigated. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the calcium carbonate polymorph formed in the presence of these polymeric additives.

  • Identity and Psychological Distress in Emerging Adulthood in Sweden: Is It Always Distressing Not to Know Who to Be and What to Do?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Identity: An International Journal of Theory and Research. - 1528-3488. ; 11, s. 93-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was twofold. The first aim was to explore the relationships between identity status, identity distress, and psychological symptoms. The second was to test a mediational model where identity distress was hypothesized to mediate a relationship between identity status and psychological symptoms. The study group comprised 136 emerging adults from Sweden (68 women, 68 men) of between 24 and 26 years of age. The results showed that experiencing moratorium was related to higher levels of identity distress as well as psychological symptoms. Measures of identity distress were associated with higher levels of psychological symptoms. Thus, there was support for the proposed mediational model. The results of this study indicate that, for some young people, the identity explorations of emerging adulthood can be accompanied by increased psychological symptoms, mediated by the experience of identity distress. However, for these emerging adults in Sweden, identity diffusion was not associated with identity distress and psychological symptoms.
