  • A model for understanding the process of firm establishment in foreign loosely-structured emerging markets
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1549-9324 .- 1747-6763. ; 11:4, s. 327-342
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our understanding of the process of firm establishment in foreign markets is relatively limited especially in relation to host-developing and host-emerging markets. The market-specific and context-driven nature of the firm establishment process is largely overlooked in the literature. Against this background, we aim to chart the establishment process of a Spanish telecommunication firm, Telefonica, in Brazil and Chile by applying the 'four stage firm establishment process model in foreign markets' (Abraha, 1994). We identify strategic responses crafted by Telefonica to overcome the challenges during its establishment process. We revise Abraha's model in view of the findings and conclude with implications for managerial practices.

  • Financial reporting of Brazilian subsidiaries to Swedish multinational parent companies : a field study
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development. - : Inderscience Enterprises Limited. - 1549-9324 .- 1747-6763. ; 4:3, s. 179-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With significant foreign direct investment in emerging economies and the European Union requirement that publicly held multinationals present consolidated financial reports, vertical adjustments to information provided by subsidiaries to conform to parent company accounting standards have become important. Yet, this issue has not been investigated significantly. In this study, we explore Brazilian subsidiaries' adjustments for Swedish multinationals to comply with Swedish accounting standards for consolidated financial reports as typical of the issue of vertical adjustments in general. Results show that subsidiaries that are material in consolidated groups seemingly make appropriate adjustments. Other subsidiaries that are not material are inconsistent. Also, some subsidiaries often distort financial results by inappropriately making adjustments before translating to the functional currency. Most subsidiaries use adjustments to smooth income. Lack of guidance and tacit approval from the parent company are possible factors subsidiaries' to make appropriate vertical adjustments. Laxity in the external audit process is apparent.

  • Marketing strategy in emerging market alliance : a longitudinal study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1549-9324 .- 1747-6763. ; 7:4, s. 309-325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By applying a longitudinal perspective, this study examines how an alliance formulates and implements its marketing strategy based on motives, resources, learning, network and performance, in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). An in-depth study on a Hungarian alliance between a Swedish medical engineering company and a local partner has been conducted. The data is collected in two periods: 1999 and 2009, and for the convenience of the analysis, the result has been presented in two phases. By comparing the phases, it is shown how the environment in which the alliance operates changes and how the alliance responses by improving its marketing strategy. Major variation of the strategy includes focus on small and dental clinics, development of intensive contacts with big hospitals to gain huge contracts after the reformation of the healthcare sector and finding a balance between lowering price and maintaining high quality of the products and services.

  • International entrepreneurship research during the last decade : a review
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development. - 1549-9324 .- 1747-6763. ; 7:2, s. 116-138
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A major contribution of the international entrepreneurship (IE) research field is that it has enhanced our understanding of the marketing challenges early internationalising firms face when they compete in constantly changing foreign markets. During the past decade, IE-research has, moreover, gone from focusing on the early internationalisation of firms to investigate the entrepreneurial processes of new business creation in foreign markets. However, ambiguity still exists regarding the level of analysis that ought to guide this new line of research. This article contributes by increasing our knowledge about the recent development in the international entrepreneurship research field by reviewing empirical studies performed between 2003 and 2011. The review focuses on the ontological perspectives used as well as the methods and theories that are adopted in the studies. Based on this review, the article contributes with a discussion about the evolution of the international entrepreneurship research field.
