  • Towards virtual co-location in functional product development
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the Knowledge Economy. - : IOS Press. - 9781586039240 - 9781905824090 ; , s. 806-814
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The shift in industry towards Functional Product Innovation implies more collaborative efforts between the partners forming joint ventures, i.e. cross-company collaboration. Hence, new demands are put on collaborative technology. Insights into needs for both industry and collaborative design teams provide the possibilities for ‘virtual co-location' to be enhanced. Following a workshop format, the radical innovation workshop, industrial criterions for collaborative technology has been analyzed based on empirical data from five Swedish manufacturing companies. During the workshop three scenarios were put forward by the industry as most relevant; (1) the design review, (2) to on-site remotely collaborate with an expert and (3) the day-to-day communication. Based on these scenarios, three industrial criterions emerged, namely efficient collaboration, effortless setup of communication and the capability to create trust without touch. Technologies to support Functional Product Innovation seem to insist on meeting these criterions.

  • Emerging and conflicting business models for music content in the digital environment
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the knowledge economy. - : IOS Press. - 9781586039240
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As music listening is moving from tangible products to digital services, record labels seem to have difficulties in adjusting their business models to the new reality. This study investigates how Swedish record labels have changed their practices and habits when it comes to marketing, promoting as well as selling music. The 360-degree model - more or less used by all majors - where the label owns or partly owns related rights is one clear tendency. A contrary tendency is split risk cooperation found mainly among the independent record companies and their acts. This is one example of the different practises that can be observed in a market where long-time strategies seem to be hard to draw simply because there is not enough knowledge on how the market will evolve, not even on short-term basis.

  • Bangladesh virtual classroom : eLearning for all – today
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the knowledge economy. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781586039240 ; , s. 1565-1572
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We developed low-cost, effective ICT to improve distance education in Bangladesh, using video and SMS to implement innovative pedagogy and to create a large-scale interactive learning environment for students, hitherto not existing. We develop sustainable strategies for ICT use in education including curriculum development, teacher education for interactive learning, and a new business model. Being the first of its kind world-wide, the project will serve as a role model for how to arrange low-cost distance tuition requiring only minimal ICT infrastructure, an example providing valuable experiences transferable to other developing countries. The project addresses technical factors (development of interactive technology) as well as social ones (introducing and sustaining interactivity in education) and the business model for distance tuition (engaging local learning centres, telecommunication management).

  • Horizontal integration of local government : the case of the citizen service unit
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the Knowledge Economy. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781586039240 ; , s. 391-398
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to present empirical findings suggesting that it may be easier to develop a citizen service than to create more effective administrative procedures. Our starting point is a case study in which we followed a large strategically important development project in a Swedish municipality. The project aims to improve both citizen service and the municipality's internal effectiveness. Its main objective is to develop a Citizen Service Unit (CSU) that works as a one-stop-shop collecting service requests from citizens in one channel. According to the citizens the CSU clearly is a success. In the citizen survey we conducted the service of the CSU is rated very high. The answering rate has increased to 85%, every request is recorded in a document and workflow system and the citizen receives fast feedback from a handling officer at the responsible office. From an organizational perspective the CSU is not at all a success. On the managerial level there is a consensus on why and how they should change within their offices. On lower levels, however, clear roles, new work routines and routines for the communication between the CSU and handling officers to a large extent have been missing. Therefore, we suggest the following lessons to be learned: (1) Pay equal attention to the front-office and the back-office perspective. Reengineered business processes and new work routines will not show up by themselves, and (2) When developing one-stop-shops as the CSU make sure to also develop models for the relationship between the one-stop-shop and the rest of the organization.

  • CTracker : a Distributed BitTorrent Tracker Based on Chimera
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the Knowledge Economy. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781586039240 ; , s. 941-947
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are three major open issues in the BitTorrent peer discovery system, which are not solved by any of the currently deployed solutions. These issues seriously threaten BitTorrent's scalability, especially when considering that mainstream content distributors could start using BitTorrent for distributing content to millions of users simultaneously in the near future. In this paper these issues are addressed by proposing a topology-aware distributed tracking system as a replacement for both centralized and Kademlia-based trackers. An experiment measuring most popular open BitTorrent trackers is also presented. It shows that centralized trackers are not topology aware. We conclude that an ideal topology-aware tracker would return peers whose latency to the requester peer is significantly lower than of a centralized tracker.

  • Using Language Technology to Improve Interaction and Provide Skim Reading Abilities to Audio Information Services
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the Knowledge Economy: Issues, Applications, Case Studies. - : IOS Press. - 9781586039240 ; , s. 1289-
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we present language technology enhancements to audio-based information services (i.e. services where information is presented using spoken language). The enhancements presented in the paper addresses two issues for audio-based services: 1) interaction with the service is rigid and 2) the ability to listen to summaries is limited. Our developments allow for more natural and efficient control of the service and means that facilitates skim reading. Using speech dialogue instead of traditional buttons provides means for more advanced navigation in the audio material. Vector space techniques are used to collect the most relevant sentences in a text and allows for skim reading of varying depth.

  • Business Community Creation Based on Competence Management
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the Knowledge Economy. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781586039240 ; , s. 1085-1092
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business communities are networked organisations with members from different industries aiming at coordinating their activities for production of the final product/service. Forming a network of companies requires “understanding” of the different companies’ organisational competences. Competence management can help solving this task. This paper starts with presenting our earlier work in competence management projects aimed at supporting creation of business networks. Three cases are introduced: formation of business relationships with developing countries, competence supply in flexible supply networks, and collaborative product innovation. Based on experiences from these projects, competence management requirements for business community creation are identified and a conceptual framework for supporting the identified requirements is proposed. This framework considers competence management as an essential part of participation in business communities and conceptually integrates organisational and individual competence development. Enterprise models can be employed for supporting competence management and competence development in business community within the framework.

  • Communicating vessels for relevant and rigorous eGovernment research
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the Knowledge Economy. - : IOS Press. - 9781586039240 ; , s. 255-261
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several researchers have pointed out that the field of eGovernment suffers from a too short-termed, project oriented, retrospective focus and a naïve technological optimism. Reflexive, critical analysis, cumulative research and altered use of theoretical frames are asked for to increase the practical value. However, in front of fulfilling such expectations the reality is that we get the research we are asking for, and we are asking for the research we know exist, and in this logic lies a lot of communicative challenges (as well as funding mechanisms). This article tries to address this relation and does so by putting forward an initiative to establish a national network of eGovernment researchers and practitioners (from private and public sector).

  • Importance of ICT for technology-based small firm's networking
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the Knowledge Economy. - : IOS Press. - 9781586039240
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern ICT is widely understood as important for enabling a more effective communication, collaboration and internal operational efficiency in today's businesses. For small firms with limited in-house resources, and especially for technology-based small firms, ICT is expected to play a vital role. The empirical evidence supporting such an understanding are however rare. This paper elaborates on the extent to which ICT capability is employed by technology-based small firms and investigates the influence of ICT capability on network configuration and networking capability. The results provide some new evidence on how ICT may enable more effective networking in this specific category of small firms, and indicates e.g. that technology-based small firms are high users of ICT for gaining flexibility in working hours, accessing vital information, maintaining collaboration with existing business partners, enable a better handling communication within the firm and providing superior customer service. ICT capability was also found to influence small firms networking configuration. Particularly, there is a clear link between higher ICT use for collaboration and more extensive partnership networking, and a higher ICT use for communication and more extensive customer networking. Furthermore, we also found support for a strong relation between ICT capability and networking capability.

  • Service encounters in 2015 : desires and needs of future customers in the Swedish energy sector
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the Knowledge Economy: Issues, Applications, Case Studies. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781586039240 ; , s. 522-529
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The deregulation of the energy sector has led to a need to study service encounters between energy companies and customers. Due to that a continuous development of energy companies’ services will be even more important in the future this paper reports upon key values of energy customers of today and tomorrow. Based on the characteristics of the MeWe-generation together with attitudes and behaviour of customers of today seven different scenarios about future service encounters has been generated. An important characteristic of these scenarios are that customers of tomorrow are interpersonal individualists in the sense that they have an increased focus in self-reliance, self-realization and self-expression. They also participate actively in different physical and virtual communities and value friends as well as authenticity. Key values expressed by customers related to the services provided by energy companies are environmentally friendliness, cost efficiency, and technology intensive.

  • Needs for a Semi-Open Source Software Business Model for Local Governments
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaboration and the Knowledge Economy. - Amsterdam, The Netherlands : IOS Press. - 9781586039240
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The search for efficient business models for open source software is a hot topic both for software vendors and for customers and users of software. In this paper we investigate possibilities for a network of municipalities in Sweden, Sambruk, to use an open source business model for their procurement of software solutions. More specifically, the procurement of public e-services has been followed in seven case studies, of which one was studied in-depth and is accounted for in detail in this paper. The results are that municipalities- investments in e-services are important both concerning function and long-term cost of ownership. Open source software, OSS, can be an alternative, but in the studied procurement cases it appeared not to be a realistic choice in practise. This paper investigates why, and the conclusions are presented as general results. The authors also suggest an alternative business model referred to as Sambruk Community Licence, ie a semi-open source software business model for local governments.

  • A multi-omic study reveals BTG2 as a reliable prognostic marker for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Molecular Oncology. - : Wiley. - 1574-7891 .- 1878-0261. ; 12:6, s. 913-924
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • B-cell translocation gene 2 (BTG2) is a tumour suppressor protein known to be downregulated in several types of cancer. In this study, we investigated a potential role for BTG2 in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) survival. We analysed BTG2 methylation data from 1230 early-stage NSCLC patients from five international cohorts, as well as gene expression data from 3038 lung cancer cases from multiple cohorts. Three CpG probes (cg01798157, cg06373167, cg23371584) that detected BTG2 hypermethylation in tumour tissues were associated with lower overall survival. The prognostic model based on methylation could distinguish patient survival in the four cohorts [hazard ratio (HR) range, 1.51-2.21] and the independent validation set (HR = 1.85). In the expression analysis, BTG2 expression was positively correlated with survival in each cohort (HR range, 0.28-0.68), which we confirmed with meta-analysis (HR = 0.61, 95% CI 0.54-0.68). The three CpG probes were all negatively correlated with BTG2 expression. Importantly, an integrative model of BTG2 methylation, expression and clinical information showed better predictive ability in the training set and validation set. In conclusion, the methylation and integrated prognostic signatures based on BTG2 are stable and reliable biomarkers for early-stage NSCLC. They may have new applications for appropriate clinical adjuvant trials and personalized treatments in the future.
