  • 2005
  • Ingår i: InfoTrend. - 1653-0225. ; 60:2, s. 39-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Economics Library of Göteborg University Library and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital Library are two libraries operating under very different conditions. They were among the first Scandinavian libraries to partake in the international user survey LibQual in 2004. Emphasis in this article is on the experience of the LibQual methodology rather than on the individual results. From the Swedish point of view, the survey could be improved e.g. in the lay-out, the wording of the questions and also simplified in respect to the data that is to be collected for measuring representativeness. On the whole however, working with LibQual 2004 was a rewarding experience. The process was well structured and efficient. The technical aspect worked well. Contacts with ARL staff were professional and accomodating. Participation in LibQual also brought several interesting contacts with colleagues, at home and abroad.

  • Utställningar, performances, filmer, foton, installationer - open access? Om konstnärlig forskning i öppna arkiv
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: InfoTrend. - 1653-0225. ; 1/10 (65), s. 13-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research results within the field of Applied and Performing Arts are underrepresented in open archives today. The research results are of various kinds, often multidisciplinary and can be found for example in exhibitions, shows, installations and performances and are documented in different kinds of media; video, sound and photo etc. Institutional repositories are not built for handling these kinds of complex multimedia objects effectively; software needs to be developed to describe the objects from this field of research. It is vital to develop open archives to provide a more user-friendly interface for depositing these types of research results, and it is also important to develop a better way of displaying the visual objects for end users.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Infotrend: nordisk tidskrift för informationsspecialister. - Stockholm : Svensk förening för informationsspecialister. - 1653-0225. ; 64:1, s. 18-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • At Halmstad University we got off to a very slow start when it came to self-archiving of our scientific publications. Because of the library’s involvement in the management of student papers, it was a fairly simple process to move from the storage of bibliographic data to fulltext archiving of these papers; however, it was a completely different matter with research publications. There was nothing to build on as no database or collection of any sort existed of the research output. Thus we had to start from scratch, which meant convincing researchers, the heads of research departments and others of the potential benefits of setting up an open archive. Despite intensive lobbying from the library, it was only after a decision made by the Head of the University, stipulating that all researchers were responsible for registering their publications in the system, that we experienced an increased activity in terms of registrations and questions concerning self-archiving. This confirmed, what we had already heard from other experiences, that although it would be good if the researchers could see the benefits of voluntarily registering their publications, some sort of mandate was still necessary to get things in motion. As however the decision did not mandate fulltext archiving, this has led to a system containing very few fulltext documents. The coming challenge lies in increasing the amount of fulltext in the system, and in particular, of refereed scientific articles.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Infotrend : nordisk tidskrift för informationsspecialister. - 1653-0225. ; 60:4, s. 125-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Information literacy seen from a historic and current perspective. In this paper I will discuss some important milestones in the growth of the concept Information Literacy. In the early years the debate and research were concentrated on information behaviour, information seeking and information use but in the middle of the 1980s, when the Information Literacy Movement started, the perspective changed and the discussions circled more about process, lifelong learning and different literacies.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: InfoTrend. - : Svensk förening för informationsspecialister. - 1653-0225. ; 63:2, s. 45-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this article we present a survey conducted during the fall of 2007. We interviewed 700 undergraduate students about their information- seeking behaviour. We found that the Internet, especially Google, plays a major role for the majority of the students and that they tend to select resources based on accessibility, ease of use and convenience. We also found that there are differences in the use of information sources depending on how long the students have been studying. We also found that stringent course requirements from faculty and staff affected the students’ information behaviour. The results provide an insight into the factors that influence students’ information–seekingbehaviour and the information sources used.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Infotrend. - : SFIS Svensk förening för informationsspecialister. - 1653-0225. ; 67:2, s. 4-13

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Infotrend. - 1653-0225. ; 64:4, s. 82-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since 2009, the Swedish government has allocated a part of its direct funding to the Swedish universities based on a bibliometric indicator, which stems from the number of publications and citations found in the Web of Science bibliographic database. This paper discusses the creation and detailed structure of the new indicator, which has met criticism from both researchers and the Swedish Research Council, set to maintain the new system. The current focus on evaluation and quality assurance in the area of higher education, together with the introduction of the new indicator, has created an increased demand on the university administration and libraries for publication databases and bibliometric services

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: InfoTrend. - 1653-0225. ; 64:2-3, s. 50-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Information and knowledge about science communication through educational journals and search engines are needed to reach higher quality in educational science. In this study two different databases, one representing open access and one not, indexing peer reviewed articles are scrutinized according to publishers, volumes, frequency of numbers per year, access and language? The result contributes to the information literacy field and science reflexivity. In a prolonged sense it is a contribution to quality in science. Questions are raised about educational journals as arenas for research communications, construction of the educational field, dominating discourses, responsibility of the intellectuals, power and democracy.

    • Academic libraries have given students instruction in information literacy for a long time. One important aspect of this work is to evaluate the student after instruction; has the student learnt something? Can she or he be defined as information literate? The research about assessment and evaluation in teaching is abundant. This article presents some of the research in this field, with a particular focus on assessing and evaluating teaching in libraries.

    • Organizations suffer not just from myopia, but also from structural and cultural inertia that makes them more reactive than active, which also hinders them from becoming fully effective. One way of explaining this is to use Simon’s (1945) ideas about how individuals are bounded in certain structures of rationality, and expanding them into areas of bounded attention and bounded interpretation. The article discusses how intelligence can be viewedas a tool for counteracting these drawbacks.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • University libraries in cooperation with society The resources and competence of academic libraries could play an important role concerning the third task of the university, i.e. interaction with the surrounding society. With information services suited for the needs of actors outside the academic world, libraries can provide support for regional development. At the same time, the capacity of libraries and their potential of offering information services in new areas are made clearer and marketed internally. During a two-year project financed by the EU, Jönköping University Library has developed a new service based on information providers and business intelligence in the framework of an external project organisation. This has resulted in new demands within the university.

- 1653-0225. ; 65:1, s. 32-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • From the autumn of 2008 up to the autumn of 2009 five seminars have been carried out at Swedish universities and university colleges with the purpose of increasing researchers’ knowledge of Open Access. The seminars have been arranged within the project ”Researcher meetings on Open Access” which is funded by the program OpenAcess.se of the National Library of Sweden. Open Access is, today, a relatively well-known concept at universities and university colleges, which presumably is one of the reasons why all the seminars have attracted a great number of researchers and doctoral candidates. The details on how Open Access publishing works are, however, not equally well known, and therefore this type of seminars work in an informative and elucidatory way concerning, for example, parallel publishing, copyright, and increased visibility. It is clear that the libraries now find themselves in a new phase regarding their work with Open Access. Focused information work will be needed for a time to come at our Swedish universities and university colleges on account of the position recently adopted by the Swedish Research Council in regard to Open Access demanding that research funded by the Council must be openly accessible within 6 months after publication. This means that the research libraries will keep playing an important role. In this article we, who have participated in the project, want to convey our experiences from the seminars which have been carried out and discuss the further work of the research libraries to inform and support researchers in matters concerning Open Access.

  • 2010

  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This article deals with the possibilities for Open Access (OA) publishing for Nordic researchers in law and in the humanities. Fifty-two journal editors answered a survey with questions on publishing in OA journals and on parallel publishing. The results show that the number of journals with a clear OA policy is low though a number of journals make articles freely available on the Internet without such a policy. The need to discuss the concept of OA in its relation to gratis, “available without cost” as opposed to libre, “available without cost and free of most judicial restraints”, becomes visible in the study. This is necessary, not least when considering research funders’ demand for OA. Many journals are positive towards parallel publishing. However, for many journals there has never been a need to draft a policy due to a lack of demand from authors. The journals consider parallel publishing as a means to communicate research and to publicize the journal. The investigation also shows that written author contracts are rare. This means that copyright stays with the author, which would provide possibilities for parallel publishing.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: INFOtrend: Nordisk tidskrift för informationsspecialister. - 1653-0225. ; 61:3, s. 75-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

    • At Linköping University different courses of study are taught from different pedagogical perspectives. Diverse methods of teaching pose diverse demands upon the information literacy of students. Students’ informationseeking is often governed by teachers’ attitudes to information seeking and library use. The library gives courses in information seeking. Most of the courses are scheduled but do not result in academic credits. Our experience is that the students who would need to develop their knowledge of information literacy often do not give priority to these courses due to a tight schedule. This project shows the need of enhanced cooperation between teachers and librarians in order to develop students’ information literacy and communication skillswith pedagogical questions. The authors are librarians at the Linköping University library and are working with information literacy issues and student education.

    • E-publishing at universities - from projects to an established activityElectronic publishing is a growing activity in the academic libraries of Swedish universities and university colleges. A recent survey, performed by the Electronic Publishing Groupcommissioned by the Association of Swedish Higher Education (SUHF), found that thirtytwo universities and university colleges runservices for academic publishing, i.e. openarchives. The most frequent fulltext publicationsare doctoral theses, undergraduatetheses and reports. An important problem, however, is that archive managers find it difficultto reach out to researchers and otheruniversity staff and inform about their services. To move forward and in particular to increasethe numbers of scientific articles in the openarchives, e-publishing must be firmly establishedwithin the university sector.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Archiving is the key to transparency and accountability, concepts that symbolize good governance. In post-conflict societies like Sierra Leone and Liberia in West Africa, information is crucial to the reconciliation and democratisation processes. Sierra Leone and Liberia have just emerged from brutal civil wars as a result of repressive governments that have not been accountable to the people nor been transparent. The mass violation of human rights and the international humanitarian law led to the establishment of Truth and Reconciliation Commissions in both countries. The Sierra Leonean TRC mission was completed in 2004 while the Liberian one is still on-going. In Sierra Leone, investigations of the violations against the civilian population resulted into a report and the same is expected with the ongoing TRC work in Liberia. Ethically, given the fact that the contributions to the TRC findings are from a traumatised people, the recommendations of the TRC should be embraced in the formulation of social and economic policies that would address the articulated root causes of the conflict. However, preliminary results suggest that obstacles to the democratization of information in African post-conflict societies are many: corruption and weak political will, widespread poverty, illiteracy, lack of information skills, information technology, and electricity and telephone connections. This is further exacerbated by a shortage of professional personnel in handling information.

    • This article discusses the challenges of disseminating information using ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) in postconflict countries like Sierra Leone and focuses on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) findings. The TRC findings were meant to promote an understanding of the crimes that were committed against the innocent civilians during the war, and to contribute to the prevention of future atrocities. It particularly looks at the most  arginalized groups, namely, women and children. The TRC findings were published in both a book and electronic form. Some simpler versions of the findings were also published by some NGOs but nevertheless, the diffusion of information into parts of the society where it is needed mostly has been inadequate. The Internet is a medium used to disseminate information effectively from one to many. The electronic version of the findings is available on the Internet but access to it requires information skills and access to ICTs. It is argued that lack of ICTs and information skills is an obstacle to the empowerment of women and children in Sierra Leone, which also hinders sustainable development. • The United Nations, world politics and the sources. This article describes the process of creating DagDok - a web guide to UN documentation for students, librarians and scholars with an interest in United Nations documentation. DagDok is launched by the Dag Hammarskjöld Library at Uppsala University Library - a specialised library in the fields of United Nations studies, international relations, peace and conflict research, and political science. It is based on the experiences of the difficulties in retrieving sources from the United Nations and understanding its underlying structure and processes.
