  • A collaborative research effort to bridge boundaries and support deviant youths in contemporary welfare systems.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 2:1, s. 88-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the challenges of introducing new approaches to the care of deviant youths in contemporary welfare systems. The specific study of early intervention programs within the area of psychosocial disturbances will be used to explore the interplay between emerging research results and the introduction of new approaches in different functionally specialized welfare carrying organizations. This paper is based on a collaborative research effort between researchers from education, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, economics and business administration and key actors from schools, police, criminal care, social security administrations, municipal health care and municipal politicians and administrative managers. The paper demonstrates that successful introduction of new coping strategies necessitates significant efforts to support the bridging of boundaries, the challenging of legacies and the learning from evidence to change established structures.

  • Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth? : Organising Boundary-Spanning Government Affairs Units during Times of Crisis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 18, s. 101-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent developments - including the COVID-19 crisis, or the UK's departure from the EU - demonstrate that business is vulnerable to unpredictable political developments. How can firms respond to such challenges? For us, the answer lies in how they organise their political actions. Applying insights from the information processing view of organisation design theory to original survey data, we investigate how firms configure boundary-spanning government affairs (GA) activities in response to Brexit. Contrary to conventional organisation design thinking, we find the ability of GA units to monitor and influence Brexit-related developments improves when firms concentrate GA decision-making at clearly defined organisational levels, and coordinate GA units with the rest of the business. Of interest to scholars of organisation design and boundary spanning, our research contributes primarily to corporate political activity (CPA) research by providing practical and theoretical insights into the management and organisation of firms' political actions in times of crisis.

  • How do street-level bureaucrats manage high workloads? Collegial mechanisms at the organisational level—experiences from public healthcare organisations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 19:2, s. 299-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to understand and explain how street-level bureaucrats manage high workloads in public healthcare organisations. Data was collected through observations, interviews and documents. The results show that high workloads are reduced through use of collegial mechanisms at the organisation level. The study shows that workloads are reduced in a two-step process, the first is a negotiation between professionals and the second in the meeting with patients. The two-step process explains the limitation problems in more detail and makes an important contribution by explaining how high workloads are reduced in public health services.

  • The impact of workplace diversity climate on the career satisfaction of skilled migrant employees
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Skilled migrant workers often experience downward career mobility post-migration. We investigate how diversity climate as an organizational response to support migrants affects the career satisfaction of migrant employees. Survey data from 179 skilled migrants working in Sweden reveal that perceived diversity climate impacts career satisfaction through a dual-path model. It negatively affects perceived overqualification, which correlates with lower career satisfaction, while positively relating to perceived organizational justice, which correlates with higher career satisfaction. These effects are contingent on individual factors. Lower career adaptability amplifies the negative impact of perceived overqualification, and higher career adaptability strengthens the positive influence of perceived organizational justice. The findings highlight the boundary conditions of workplace diversity climate–career outcome relationships and underscore the interaction of organizational and individual factors and, in particular, the agency and proactivity of skilled migrants through career adaptability.

  • Lost in transitional space? Organising labour market integration for highly skilled refugees in the welfare state
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 20:3, s. 530-542
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Labour market integration of refugees is seen as a major challenge in many countries. This article draws on a qualitative study focused on highly skilled refugees participating in two internship programmes at two large private companies in Sweden. We draw on the concepts of organisational socialisation and liminality to suggest that such programmes, when organised in collaboration between private companies and public organisations as part of the labour market integration support offered by the welfare state, further entrench the liminal position of refugees. The refugee interns find themselves in a liminal space, aspiring to secure not only a future professional role at the workplace but also the role of an integrated member of the Swedish labour market—a role that is ambiguously defined and constantly shifting as ideas of what it means to be employable shift too. This is a position that is not without its problems, ambiguities and uncertainties and requires a new perspective on organising labour market integration of refugees.

  • Tokenism Revisited : When Organizational Culture Challenges Masculine Norms, the Experience of Token Is Transformed
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extant research on tokenism has documented the adverse consequences for employees in minority positions and how women's possibility of action is constrained in male-dominated contexts. We present an in-depth qualitative case study of a male-dominated organization in a masculine industry in which, despite all expectations, the experience of tokenism for minority women is ambiguous. Furthermore, these women also display a strong agentic role in an organization in which culture favours gender equality. This case reveals an aspect previously overlooked in studies of tokenism: the importance of organizational culture. By exposing and challenging the implicit masculine norm through its organizational culture, this organization actively engages in the change of gendering processes and contributes to establishing an alternative norm. Theoretical contributions show the impact of normative control on the experience of tokens, and how it provides a frame for action toward gender equality.

  • Critical incidents in R&D alliances : Uncovering leadership roles
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 6:3, s. 195-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What keeps an alliance leader awake during night' Past alliance research has contributed to our understanding of aspects such as motives for forming an alliance, initial conditions and the process of development. However, few studies have investigated challenges that alliance leaders face, as well as roles they adopt during the alliance life cycle. In this paper, we seek to investigate critical incidents that alliance leaders face in the execution of contract-based RD alliances. By using the Critical Incident Technique, 158 critical incidents have been collected and analyzed. Our findings show that, in terms of frequency of occurrence, managing informal relationships and alliance formation are the two dominant themes, followed by formal RD process, embeddedness, and exit. In addition, four crucial roles for managing an RD alliance are also suggested. These roles are Facilitating, Finishing, Ambassadoring, and Trustkeeping.

  • A Manifesto for project management research
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : WILEY PERIODICALS, INC. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 1, s. 3-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Project management research has evolved over the past five decades and is now a mature disciplinary field investigating phenomena of interest to academics, practitioners and policymakers. Studies of projects and project management practices are theoretically rich and scientifically rigorous. They are practically relevant and impactful when addressing the pursuit of operational, tactical and strategic advancements in the world of organisations. We want to broaden the conversation between project management scholars and other scholars from cognate disciplines, particularly business and management, in a true scholarship of integration and cross-fertilisation. This Manifesto invites the latter scholars to join efforts providing a foundation for further creative, theoretical and empirical contributions, including but not limited to tackling grand challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and global poverty. To this end, we identify five theses:Projects are often agents of change and hence fundamental to driving the innovation and change required to tackle grand challenges.Much project management research leverages and challenges theories across disciplines, including business, organisation and management studies, contributing to developing new theories, including those specific to projects and temporary organisations.Projects are useful units of analysis, project management research is ideal for scientific cross-fertilisation and project management scholars welcome academics from other communities to engage in fruitful conversations. As in many other fields of knowledge, the project management research community embraces diversity, welcoming researchers of different genders and various scientific and social backgrounds.Historically rooted in problem-solving and normative studies, project management research has become open to interpretative and emancipatory research, providing opportunities for other business, management and organisational scholars to advance their knowledge communities.

  • Practices of organizing migrants' integration into the European labour market
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 19:2, s. 173-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organizational practices of migrants' labour market integration have by and large been overlooked in favour of research on societal-level/macrolevel factors, policies, rules and regulations and their impacts on migrants' positions and perspectives on the labour market in the host country. Organizations are conceptualized as key sites that can open doors for meaningful employment and career progression or close them by way of producing inequalities. This change of focus, which we advocate, has a potential to not only increase our understanding of how migrants' labour market integration is organized and practiced at the organizational level, but also shed light on migrants' own mobilizations and agency in these processes. Research on organizational practices of workplace integration of migrants is also relevant as economic and political migration is still high on the agenda in many European countries, particularly since the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ in 2015, when hundreds of thousands of refugees made their way to Europe. Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine in 2022 reminds us of the heightened importance of this issue. In this article, we start by outlining what has motivated this Special Section. Next, we briefly review the relevant literature that directly or indirectly focuses on practices of organizing migrants' labour market integration in European host countries. We then introduce the two contributions to this Special Section, presenting and discussing their main lines of reasoning and how each of them answer our call for papers. We conclude by elaborating what is, from our point of view, still missing and suggest possible avenues for future research.

  • Does increased generational involvement foster business growth? The moderating roles of family involvement in ownership and management
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 17:3, s. 785-801
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building upon the upper echelon perspective, we examine the effect of generational involvement in management on various measures of business growth and consider different levels of family participation. Specifically, we argue that generational involvement and the participation of family actors in ownership and management foster cognitive diversity at the TMT level, which may ultimately positively or negatively impact family business growth. Our theory, which is tested using a longitudinal sample of unlisted Belgian family firms, contributes primarily to the literature related to the determinants of family firm growth, which, to date, has paid limited attention to the combined effect of different family involvement factors.

  • New Entrant or Incumbent Advantage in Light of Regulatory Change : A Multiple Case Study of the Swedish Life Insurance Industry
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 17:1, s. 209-227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When an industry is disrupted, the predominant view is that new entrants benefit at the expense of incumbents, who are pictured as slow‐moving, inert, and incapable to change. Based on a longitudinal multiple case study with data over a 15‐year period, we challenge this view. By studying the action responses of three incumbent firms and three new entrants to a major regulatory change in the life insurance industry, we find that both incumbents and new entrants can succeed if complementary assets are correctly managed. In particular, firms need to acquire and refine certain key assets needed for exploiting new business opportunities and, subsequently, need to enhance the value of their complementary assets by transforming them from generic to specialized and on to co‐specialized stages. These findings have theoretical implications for the literature on strategy and innovation management. In addition, we outline important managerial implications to transform complementary assets to stages with higher value.

  • Obstacles, Networking Approaches and Entrepreneurial Network Changes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley: 24 months. - 1740-4762 .- 1740-4754. ; 15:2, s. 171-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While recent work has considered network change, little is known about how certain factors determine such changes. This study focuses on two factors - the type of obstacles entrepreneurs face and their networking approach - and employs a two-stage research design and network visualisation approach to capture entrepreneurs' experiences in managing networks during their entrepreneurial journey. Using an inductive approach, the first stage of the study identifies the obstacles and networking approaches that influence different types of network changes. The second stage employs a deductive approach to test the hypotheses developed from the first stage using a larger sample. We find that in experiencing obstacles from internal sources, entrepreneurs are more likely to find support from weak ties while strong ties are beneficial for overcoming obstacles from external sources. In having difficulties in acquiring entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, entrepreneurs are more likely to develop a low-density network consisting of many structural holes. Conversely, dealing with difficulties in accessing market and resources imposes over-reliance on high-density network. Furthermore, the entrepreneurs' networking approaches also influence network changes and partially mediate the relationship between the networks and the obstacles they face.

  • The Proactive Initiation of SMEs' Foreign Business Relationships
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley: 24 months. - 1740-4762 .- 1740-4754. ; 16:4, s. 1159-1173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Taking control over one's destiny by proactive internationalization has been considered an important performance indicator in small business research. We develop a model that examines how internal and external contextual factors influence SMEs’ foreign market entry through proactive initiation of business relationships in foreign markets. The ability to proactively leverage such relationships is essential for opening up avenues into foreign markets and serves as a first step in negating the liability of outsidership that could prohibit firms from acquiring relevant market-specific resources. By examining the dynamics that either can enable or constrain firms in their efforts to become insiders in foreign markets in the entry phase, we contribute to international small business theory. We also add conceptual and practical insights to international small business research by providing valuable empirical verification of how and to what extent the proactive initiation of foreign business relationships of SMEs is internally or externally conditioned.
