  • Adolescents with endometriosis : Their experience of the school health care system in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - London, United Kingdom : Mark Allen Group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 8:2, s. 81-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate what type and level of support women diagnosed with endometriosis received in Sweden from the school medical network and school nurses during their secondary and upper secondary school years and how it affected their quality of life.A quantitative method with an inductive approach was used to collect data for the study.Young women were found to be absent from school or missing extra-curricular activities due to pain and abnormal bleeding associated with their menstrual cycles. Some of the women thought that these symptoms were normal and did not consult the school nurse as a result of their limited experience. Others did not consult with the nurses because of a perception of poor treatment.Endometriosis can be managed and adequate treatment can have a substantial impact on improving quality of life. It is important that school nurses are aware of the condition and that young women understand what constitutes a normal menstrual cycle and when they should seek help from health professionals.

  • Can school attachment modify the relation between foster care placement and school achievement?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : Mark Allen group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 13:4, s. 175-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this research is to examine the relation between school attachment and school achievement and foster care placement.A cross-sectional study was carried out with data from 20 340 pupils in Sweden, aged 10, 13 and 16 years, 252 of the children were placed in foster care.Data on children's health, school attachment and school achievement were obtained from the Pupil Health Database. The results show that school achievement was significantly poorer for children in foster care than for other children, but only when they had low school attachment. When they had high school attachment, there was no difference in school achievement between the groups. Therefore, the results of this study suggests that school attachment could modify the relation between foster care placement and school achievement. The interaction effect was statistically significant after adjusting for age and sex. By promoting school attachment for children in foster care through creating supportive relations and a friendly school environment, the school achievement can be improved.

  • Pupils' perspectives on preventive health dialogues
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : Mark Allen Group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 5:1, s. 26-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to understand pupils’ perspectives on health dialogues with school nurses. Background: A preventive health dialogue with a school nurse is offered to pupils in grades 4 and 7 in compulsory school and during their first year of upper secondary school in Sweden. The dialogue has been developed by school nurses as a method in health prevention work, but knowledge of how it is experienced from the pupil’s perspective is scant. Method: A total of 15 focus group interviews comprising 74 pupils altogether were performed. The data was subjected to qualitative content analysis. Results: The results emerged in four categories: Preparation creates preparedness and Adaptability creates dialogues based on wishes and needs, which were seen as prerequisites for a satisfactory health dialogue; the health dialogue benefits were Providing opportunity for knowledge and insight about health and lifestyle and Providing opportunity to develop a trustful relationship with the school nurse, which could result in a satisfactory outcome of a health dialogue. Conclusions: These results highlight that it is essential to create a respectful and open atmosphere in the encounter between pupil and school nurse. The pupil can gain insight into his or her health situation and get advice based on his or her individual needs if the nurse can adapt to the pupil’s wishes and needs through the dialogue.

  • School nurses' health dialogues with pupils about physical activity
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : MA Healthcare Limited. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 10:7, s. 330-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to explore school nurses' health dialogues with pupils regarding physical activity. A descriptive explorative qualitative design based on video recordings of 15 nurses performing 24 ordinary real-life health visits with pupils aged 10,14 and 16 years was used to accomplish this. Audio files from the video recordings were transcribed verbatim and subjected to qualitative content analysis. The results showed that the school nurses created a flow and kept the conversation going to enable the progress of the health dialogue about physical activity. To gain the pupils' trust, the nurses used social talk and gave positive feedback. By assessing information about the pupils' activity the nurses created an overview and then, based on this overview, tried to create a potential for change in physical activity.

  • ‘I had a lump in my stomach’ : Swedish gay and lesbian students’ experiences of their time in school
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : MA Healthcare Ltd. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 12:6, s. 284-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gay and lesbian youth can experience ignorance and a lack of acknowledgement surrounding their sexual orientation during their time in school. This qualitative interview study describes how Swedish gay and lesbian students experience their secondary school years on the basis that society has heteronormative values. The data is based on eight telephone interviews with gay and lesbian young adults, aged 18–25 and was analysed using a qualitative narrative approach. The findings presented four themes: not fitting into the norm of heterosexuality, lacking confirmation of their own homosexuality, finding courage, seeing the school as a supportive or a non-supportive environment.A way to normalise homosexuality can be to discuss sexual development and attraction from a health-promoting perspective. Professionals working in school need to feel comfortable with issues such as sexuality in order to create a situation of confidence for the student.

  • Meeting and supporting students who have parents with mental ill-health
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : MA Healthcare Ltd. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 10:4, s. 182-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mental ill-health is an increasing problem in Swedish society. If a parent is suffering from mental illness, it can have negative consequences for the child’s wellbeing, health and developmental process. The challenge for school nurses is to identify and support these students. The aim of this study is to describe school nurses’ experiences from meeting and supporting students who have parents with mental ill-health. Interviews with six school nurses were performed after snowball recruitment with purposive sampling and analysed using qualitative content analysis. School nurses’ experience of meeting and supporting students who have parents with mental ill-health shows that this is complex and demands competence and collaboration. Their competences in collaboration with others as well as their ability to show an open and tolerant attitude were important in order to build trustful relations with students, their parents and other professionals.

  • Assessing the validity and reliability of the "Health Dialogue" in 10-year-olds
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : Mark Allen Group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 8:8, s. 384-391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim:The aim was to assess the concurrent, construct and convergent validity of the Health Dialogue questionnaire (HD) in 4th grade in compulsory school, through comparison of the HD questionnaire with Pediatric Quality Of Life Inventory (PedsQL), and Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC).Methods:A sample was created from the HD n=1956, HBSC, n=1500 and PedsQL n=425. An exploratory factor analysis was performed in order to evaluate the construct validity of HD.Results:A majority of the questions show acceptable concurrent validity and the results support the HD as a valid 16-item three factorial model for school children aged 10 years old (grade 4). The HD's three factorial model's degree of explanation was 39% of the school children's health in school settings. Conclusion:The HD questionnaire is a valid instrument for measuring 10-year-old school children's self-reported-health and to identify positive health factors.

  • Exploring the development of school children's health
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - London : Mark Allen Group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 7:4, s. 189-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To explore the association between positive self-reported health (SRH) in pre-school and 4th grade SRH in a long–term prospective population-based study in Sweden. Methods: Data originated from the Health Dialogue (HD) a structured instrument used by school nurses. 1084 children participated. Odds ratios were analyzed. Results: In 10-year-old children’s SRH, comfort in school, normal BMI and absence of headaches were shown to be significantly important health indicators. Normal BMI showed to have a potentially causal effect on 10-year-old girls and absence of headaches showed a potentially causal effect among 10-year-old boys. Conclusion: Schools should be designed to meet the children’s needs so that they are perceived as comfortable, safe and secure places. Schools should advocate physical activity and play, serve healthy nutritious food in order to motivate, support and promote a healthy lifestyle. Schools are a unique arena for health promotion as they reach practically all school-age children.

  • A health promotion intervention strengthening Swedish high school students' wellbeing: A feasibility study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : Mark Allen Group. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 13:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The majority of Swedish school children enjoy a general good health. Still, mental health problems are increasing among young people in Sweden. According to Swedish law all school staff members (teachers and student health professionals) have mutual responsibility to provide a safe school environment and health. Since 2010, there is an emphasis on health promotion in schools. The aim of this study is to describe the feasibility and pilot outcomes of a health promoting intervention targeting healthy high school students (the Strengthening Adolescent Wellbeing [SAW] project).A descriptive design was used with an intervention group that was assessed before and after the implementation of the programme using quantitative methods. The study was based on the Medical Research Council Framework. The study and the data collection were performed during the autumnof 2016 and the early spring of 2017.Public high school students' health professionals, that is school nurses, student counselors and specialist educators, facilitated a research-based intervention consisting of eight sessions with education and mind-body practices. Pre- and post-testing were carried out.The main findings showed enhanced levels of wellbeing among the participating students and the student-related measures all showed improvements. The intervention seems to have been feasible in this context. Findings from this study indicate that the SAW methodology contributed to an improvement in high school students' wellbeing. The study will provide a base for a full-scale evaluation study intended to evaluate the effect of this health-promoting programme.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 14:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a part of its health-monitoring programme, Sweden invites all children to access health services. In this qualitative study, first meetings with newly arrived child migrants and their families are described from the perspective of primary school nurses through three themes: methods and strategies in use, impact of the first health dialogues, and dedication of the school nurses. With many newly arrived migrants and scarce support within the school system, the nurses felt abandoned in balancing their available work hours with their own ambitions and conducting the meetings, including health checkups and mapping the vaccination status of the children.

  • Teaching about childhood cancer to pupils aged 10–12 years: A randomised trial of two types of material
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - 1752-2803. ; 14:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the study was to describe and compare pupils' experience of teaching about cancer, when a nurse used two different formats of teaching material to teach pupils aged from 10 to 12 years. Pupils from schools in Western Sweden were randomised to either Imaginary Friends or SEE-HEAR-DO pictures. A total of 197 of 231 pupils (85%) participated, and a majority knew someone who had had cancer before, and thought it was valuable to get knowledge about cancer. The Imaginary Friends intervention group felt happier/more content and calmer/more relaxed, and less tense/nervous after the education about cancer. The SEE-HEAR-DO group felt happier/more content after the education, and were to a significantly higher extent stimulated to ask questions. Both Imaginary Friends and SEE-HEAR-DO pictures can be used as teaching materials for pupils. The use of SEE-HEAR-DO pictures may increase the interaction between the school nurse and the pupils.

    • Background:School nurses have a unique opportunity to promote health when they meet school children during the Health Dialogue. The Health Dialogue concept is used by all the school nurses in a county in Mid Sweden.Aim:To describe school nurses' experiences of the Health Dialogue concept. Methods:A qualitative descriptive study with latent content analysis of interviews performed during February–April 2012, where 16 school nurses participated.Findings:The school nurses experienced the Health Dialogue concept as a useful tool to work with school children's health in a relationship-based, child focused, structured, and systematic way, which was reflected in one overarching theme: 'To be in a relationship-based, health-promoting practice.' However, school nurses also experienced loneliness and frustration from the many difficult situations with school children, and they indicated needs for further collaboration. Conclusions:The Health Dialogue concept is child-focused, systematic and structured, but it requires further development and continuing work on statistical feedback. School nurses indicated a need for collaboration with teachers, parents, and other health professionals, as well as professional-reflective supervision.

  • Contents of Swedish school health questionnaires
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - 1752-2803. ; 6:2, s. 82-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: This study aims to analyse and link the content of the health information requested in questionnaires used locally in Swedish child and school health services. Background: In industrialized countries, children's health needs are changing from physical to psychosocial needs and the questionnaires used for health screening and guiding health promotion must therefore adapt to these changes. Methods: Questionnaires were analysed, together with health items linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY). The inter-rater agreement for linking was 80%. Standard age groups were used to improve the comparability across different questionnaires. Results: The information requested for the youngest children focused on communication and acquiring language. For the children aged 6 years and above, health questionnaires related to mental functions, the school situation, psychosomatic symptoms and issues associated with taking care of one's health. Conclusions: The information relating to health in questionnaires revealed that interest focused on health items strongly related to the different age groups and to psychosocial health. The focus was the child as a person rather than the child within a family and school environment.

  • School nurses’ perceptions of using the physical environment of their office to support wellbeing
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: British Journal of School Nursing. - : MA Healthcare Ltd. - 1752-2803 .- 2052-2827. ; 13:3, s. 128-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The physical environment has an impact on wellbeing. School nurses can use this to promote students’ health. Aim: The aim of this study is to elucidate school nurses’ perceptions of using the physical environment at their office, as a tool in nursing. Method: A qualitative interview study was conducted with five Swedish school nurses, using semi-structured questions. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Three categories (offering a health environment for wellbeing, being present in the environment for the children and using the environment for health education) and six subcategories emerged during analysis. Conclusions: School nurses made their office a place for wellbeing by using it for health information, as a sanctuary and as an environment that supports children’s need for integrity. How the school nurses used their environment depended on their personality. Obstacles included people in the school who had little knowledge of what school nurses’ work consists of and also the difficulty of appearing available to the children.
