  • Impact on design when introducing additive manufacturing in space applications
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of International Design Conference, DESIGN. - : Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, Croatia; The Design Society, Glasgow, UK. - 1847-9073. - 9789537738594 ; 3, s. 997-1008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studied how the introduction of additive manufacturing (AM) in space applications impacts the design phases. Together with three manufacturers of space applications, the potential benefit as well as constraints are studied to identify design gaps. A literature survey is conducted to match the needs and following an analysis the impact on design practice is formulated. Results show the need to combine a wider design exploration capability, in combination with comparative modelling strategies.

  • A new model for capturing design information with an aim to aid change propagation assessment and subsequent redesign
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: DS 92: Proceedings of the DESIGN 2018 15th International Design Conference. - : Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, Croatia; The Design Society, Glasgow, UK. - 1847-9073.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new model is developed to investigate the causes of change propagation and guide the redesign process. The model offers a micro-level perspective on the mechanisms through which changes propagate or are absorbed. Extending the Information Structure Framework (ISF) reported by Ahmad et al. (2013), the model uses a multi-domain approach combined with a reformulated detail design process layer. It is illustrated through a desk-based case study of routine mechanical design. Advantages and limitations are discussed along with possibilities for further work.

  • Interaction between computer-based design analysis activities and the engineering design process - An industrial survey
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 13th International Design Conference - DESIGN'14. - Zagreb : University of Zagreb. - 1847-9073. ; DS 77:2, s. 1283-1296, s. 1283-1296
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the large majority of product development projects, computer-based design analyses are performed to assess the feasibility of potential technical solutions. As a first step to bring about a deeper understanding of the interactions between the engineering design and the design analysis activities, a survey has been performed in industry. The results of the survey cover: the use of design analysis within product development, the interactions of engineering design along the design analysis process, and the treatment of uncertainties and errors connected to the design analysis activities.

  • Analysis of Engineering Change Requests Using Markov Chains
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of International Design Conference, DESIGN. - : Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, Croatia; The Design Society, Glasgow, UK. - 1847-9073. - 9789537738594 ; 2, s. 523 -532
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Engineering change requests are important and plentiful in the product development process to enhance a product. In this paper we use Markov chains on ECRs in a large product development project and display the results in a Markov chain DSM. The DSM shows statistical probability of a transition pathway for an industrial design process and together with engineering domain knowledge we identify patterns and improvement opportunities. It turns out that 8% of ECRs are closed directly after creation, most common pathway is not followed in early statues and status iterations are seen in the DSM.

  • MATERIAL CRITICALITY METHOD-PRODUCT VULNERABILITY FROM A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: DS 84: Proceedings of the DESIGN 2016 14th International Design Conference. - 1847-9073. ; , s. 221-230
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel method is presented, including a material criticality list and sustainability compliance index. The method aims to support an estimation of the vulnerability of a product concept due to material criticality and strategically guide early design decisions. A jet engine component design team evaluated the method. It was understood that the method increased communication and clarification regarding material criticality. Further, it became apparent that the method provided a collaboration link between the design team and the business development team.

  • A Conceptual Framework to Support Engineering Designers in Using In-Service Information
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: DS 70: Proceedings of DESIGN 2012, the 12th International Design Conference, Dubrovnik, Croatia. - 1847-9073. - 9789537738174 ; , s. 1465-1476
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in Undetermined In the global market of air transport, the integration of products and services is seen as being necessary for the long-term success of engine manufacturers. A flow of in-service information to designers is crucial for minimising in-service issues. A literature review showed that there are no studies that have proposed or developed methods or tools to support designers in using in-service information in a design task. The work presented in this paper aims at proposing a framework to support designers in using in-service information in a design task.

  • Design methods and factors influencing their uptake in product development companies: A review
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 13th International Design Conference - DESIGN'14. - 1847-9073. ; DS 77, s. 231-240, s. 231-240
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design methods are necessary to support product development companies in improving their product development processes, and thereby in producing high quality products. The uptake of design methods in product development companies is limited and lower than one might expect. There is a wide variety of literature related to factors that influence the uptake of design methods in companies. In this paper, we synthesised this literature, and in particular, developed a framework of factors than can influence the uptake of design methods in product development companies.

  • Ideation Metrics: Interdependency between Average Novelty and Variety
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: DS 70: Proceedings of DESIGN 2012, the 12th International Design Conference, Dubrovnik, Croatia. - 1847-9073. - 9789537738174 ; , s. 1881-1892, s. 1881-1892
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in Undetermined The importance of ideation in the conceptual design phase has been widely accepted. Shah et al. (2003) developed four key metrics for evaluating a designer’s exploration and expansion of design space. The four metrics are: novelty, variety, quality, and quantity of designs. The mean of novelty scores of ideas in a set (i.e. Average Novelty - AN) has also been used in some ideation studies. However, many of the studies that have computed AN and variety, have not examined the interdependency between them. This research aims at examining the interdependency between AN and variety.

  • Product Variety and Variety in Production
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Variety traditionally denotes products that serve a wide range of customer needs. However, variety in production exists too. Like products, production processes and production resources may also embody variety to serve the production fulfillment of a product variety. In this paper, product variety and variety in production are described and contrasted through a literature review. The aim is to serve the engineering design community with an elevated perspective of variety in production and its relation to product variety.

  • BIG DATA ANALYSIS AS A NEW APPROACH FOR USABILITY ATTRIBUTES EVALUATION OF USER INTERFACES: AN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY CONTEXT
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the DESIGN 2018 15th International Design Conference. - : Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, Croatia; The Design Society, Glasgow, UK. - 1847-9073. - 9789537738594 ; , s. 1651-1662
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of digital technologies dramatically increased the complexity of user interfaces in modern cars that made the usability evaluation an arduous task. Current usability evaluation methods cannot provide sufficient information about a user and system performance for such a complex and dynamic environment as automotive user interfaces. In this paper, we investigate how and to what extent the big data analysis can contribute to the usability attributes evaluation. We present the case study design for usability evaluation of Driver Support system, validated by the industry professionals.

  • Assessing the value of radical technology alternatives at system level
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the challenge to assess value when alternative technologies - of radical nature - are integrated on complex products. The study highlights three main challenges: 1) value depends on how the overall product platform is impacted over time 2) value depends on combination effects between technologies and 3) value depends on how the technology balances internal and external stakeholders needs simultaneously. The paper describes how these challenges can be tackled by novel modelling methods, illustrated with an example related to structural batteries.

  • Digitalization Challenges for Lean Visual Planning in Distributed Product Development Teams
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: DS 84: Proceedings of the DESIGN 2016 14th International Design Conference. - 1847-9073. ; , s. 1595-1604
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Visual Planning has shown strong benefits for its easy-to-use layout and ability to plan projects with little effort and a low threshold to the method. However, limitations of the physical solution becomes apparent as more development are conducted in distributed teams where information becomes difficult to share and interact with. This paper presents challenges extracted from a literature review, combined with interviews and observations in nine case companies and concludes that there is a great importance, that despite digitalization, maintain a strong emphasis on preserving the meeting.

  • Fail early, fail often: exploring stanford's ME310 course as a basis to improve innovation outpost efficacy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: DS92: Proceedings of the DESIGN 2018 15th International Design Conference. - : Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, Croatia; The Design Society, Glasgow, UK. - 1847-9073. ; , s. 2505-2516
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this case study, we compare knowledge transfer between innovation teams in two contexts: an industry-sponsored graduate student capstone course to their corporate sponsors, and innovation outposts (IOs) to their parent companies. Through interviews with different stakeholders, we identified best practices for and challenges to innovation transfer, with personal relationships and tangible communication of ideas through prototypes being key to success. We call for more longitudinal studies to explore both the soft and hard benefits of innovation outposts.

  • Knowledge Management Life Cycle: An Individual's Perspective
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: DS 77: Proceedings of the DESIGN 2014 13th International Design Conference. - 1847-9073. ; , s. 1905-1914
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Product development projects are expected to deliver results according to project goals. However, long-term success (over product generations) is diminishing when little time is given for knowledge capture and reuse. Effects of inefficient knowledge management (KM) become apparent when valuable knowledge is lost over time. Core barriers that decrease efficiency in KM, at the case companies, are mapped into a knowledge life cycle model, based on an individual’s perspective. To improve KM, instant knowledge work (acquisition, creation, refinement, sharing) is presented as a mind-set and a tool.

  • A Preliminary Study of Trends in Perceived Quality Design Attributes in the Automotive Luxury Market Segment
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: DS 84: Proceedings of the DESIGN 2016 14th International Design Conference. - 1847-9073. ; DS 84, s. 2189-2196
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The premium vehicle segment has focused on excellent manufacturing quality, while in contrast the luxury segment has focused on emotional and personalized appeal. We perform qualitative analysis of interviews with Italian, Swedish, and American premium and luxury vehicle manufacturers. Results indicate customers of luxury vehicles now consider quality attributes previously considered only by customers of the premium segment. We quantitatively model this design communication process, and show luxury vehicle manufacturers that neglect benchmarking against the premium segment risk low perceived quality.
