  • Human Factors Experiences in Context - Comparing Four Industrial Cases Using a Soft Systems Framework
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Ergonomics Open Journal. - : Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.. - 1875-9343. ; 4, s. 131-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: In industrial production companies, the practice of assigning responsibility for human factors and ergonomics(HFE) to specific professionals (referred to as HF agents in this paper) may take on various organizational forms. This interview study examines the extent to which HF agents are able to give input towards the design of new productionsystems in different industrial sectors. The present paper reports on how HF agents work in four Canadian case companies from the Automotive, Nuclear Power, Poultry and Auto parts sectors. A stratified soft-systems framework was used to guide the comparison of the four case companies regarding the HF agents’ positioning in their companies and how this influences their work practices. HF agents and a cluster of 2 -3 surrounding colleagues with adjacent responsibilities were interviewed. Results showed that company context-specific factors such as procedures, collegial relations, processes and culture all heavily influence the “infrastructure” the HF agents can make use of to advance and sustain a human factors/ergonomics agenda. This includes vertical support in the company hierarchy (management support from top-down, employee acceptance from bottom-up), available tools and methods for demonstrating HFE benefits, and proceduralized accountability for HFE in projects. The companies that report positively on being able to address HFE issues proactively have HFE input integrated procedurally into new project start-ups, and the HF agent has a sign-off role. These companies have also, on a high organizational level, established linkage between HFE improvements and business objectives.

  • The changing face of office ergonomics
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Ergonomics Open Journal. - : Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.. - 1875-9343. ; 2015:8, s. 38-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: Musculoskeletal pain has been an important issue over the decades among office workers. Whether caused or just aggravated from poor posture, or inappropriately adjusted workstations, the issue continues to be a challenge to staff, employers and ergonomists. In this brief overview of some important aspects of these problems, the authors give hands-on suggestions on how to organize, monitor and address some of the aggravating factors. It is our sincere hope that this article will provide arguments based on scientific evidence for our many field ergonomists who struggle to convince managers to buy ergonomically-adequate equipment, and to make sure the equipment is well adjusted for each individual worker. The role of the ergonomist is continuously changing with our technological advances, but to be effective this has to include direct worker participation and awareness.

  • How do different temperatures affect knife force?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Ergonomics Open Journal. - : Bentham Open. - 1875-9343. ; :8, s. 27-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Meat cutters have long since claimed that knife forces increase with lower meat temperatures. This study was performed to find out what effects the meat temperature has on cutting forces. In addition, the same issue was addressed for pure fat. One hundred and forty four samples of lean meat and of fat respectively were collected and put overnight inone of three refrigerators with temperatures 2, 7 and 12°C, 48 in each. These samples were cut while measuring cutting forces in an Anago KST Sharpness Analyzer machine. The results show that there were no significant differences in knife forces concerning lean meat at the three temperatures. However, the force in pure fat at 2°C was significantly increased by 30% compared to the other temperatures. The forces in fat were generally three times higher than for lean meat, regardlessof temperature.

  • Ergonomic conditions and health at gender segregated workplaces
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Ergonomics Open Journal. - : Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.. - 1875-9343. ; 2012:5, s. 19-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To investigate working conditions and health at gender segregated (most women, ≥ 60% women or most men, ≥ 60% men) workplaces with a focus on associations of ergonomic exposures with musculoskeletal disorders. Methods: A comprehensive questionnaire was randomly sent to 10 000 inhabitants in three municipalities in the middle of Sweden. The response rate was 50% (4965 men and women). Organisational, physical and psychosocial working conditions and the musculoskeletal symptom panorama as well as general health and psychological well-being were compared between men and women in the gender segregated workplaces. Results: There were significant differences in working conditions between men and women both in female and male dominated workplaces. Most differences concerned physical work environment factors at both workplaces. However, the level of low control and strain were more prevalent among women in male dominated workplaces. A significantly greater share of women, compared to men, reported symptoms in all body parts except in low back and knees at both workplaces. Good general health was reported by 80% of both men and women but men in male dominated workplaces perceived significantly better psychological well-being than the others. Conclusions: Women and men in this region performed different work tasks and a greater share of women than men reported musculoskeletal symptoms. This was the fact also when working in the same type of segregated workplaces.

  • Harmful effects in personal assistents´ client transfer situations
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The Ergonomics Open Journal. - : Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.. - 1875-9343. ; 7, s. 1-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to describe personal assistants’ risks for harmful effects in client transfer situations at work. Observation and assessment of their working postures in transfer situations were performed by the Swedish ergonomic regulations concerning “red flags” (AFS 1998:1), by video recordings and by biomechanical analysis. The results showed that among eight home care assistants, four assistants had a low-back posture in client transfer situations which was flexed and/or rotated >60, classified as a harmful effect, a red flag, with a high risk for musculoskeletal workrelated symptoms and disorders and the other four had a risk for harmful effects, yellow flags. The harmful effects were noted in highly flexed and rotated working postures when technical equipment was not used or not possible to use anthropometrically correct. All eight personal assistants´ neck flexion indicated yellow flags, thus there were risks for harmful effect in the neck.
