  • Introduction : Two Stories of the Arts and Humanities – and a Third Version Emerging
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Academic Quarter. - 1904-0008. ; 13:10, s. 4-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the past few decades, the arts and humanities in the West- ern world have been challenged by a strange contradiction between two very different stories about their raison d’être and value. The first story focuses on the expansion of universities, including the faculties of arts and humanities. The second story is dominated by a feeling of distress prompted by the constant questioning of the usefulness and applicability of the arts and humanities. As the con- tributions to this volume of Academic Quarter indicate, however, a third story may be about to emerge.

  • Den uforløste hjemve : Marsklandets mørke natur i Theodor Storms Skimmelrytteren
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Academic Quarter. - Aalborg : Aalborg Universitetsforlag. - 1904-0008. ; 21, s. 114-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the romantic era, man’s relationship with nature has been connected with strong emotions and ideas, and not all kinds of landscapes are therefore considered equally pretty or nice today. Through an ecocritical reading of the North German author Theodor Storm’s novella The Rider on the White Horse (Der Schimmelreiter) (1888), this article illustrates why the North Frisian and Danish marshlands have been depicted as an uncanny (unheimliche) place in modern culture, and why this peripheral nature never became an integral part of what we today consider as the Danish landscape.

  • From the Flame and the Flower to Fifty Shades of Grey : Sex, Power and Desire in the Romance Novel
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Academic Quarter. - Aalborg : Aalborg University. - 1904-0008. ; 7, s. 119-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • E.L. James’s Fifty Shades trilogy has become a huge success and sold millions of copies. The novels’ mix of romance and erotica has been described as something new. Reading these books mainly as ro-mance, Nilson focuses on how James uses well known and estab-lished romance traits from, for example, the so-called “bodice-rip-per” novel and chick lit, in order to create a hybrid. These traits are visible in both how James describes her protagonists and in how the relationship between them is portrayed. Nilson argues that the Fifty Shades trilogy is, rather than a new kind of romance, a compila-tion of well-established traits

  • ’I am Girl. Hear Me Roar’. : Girl Power and Postfeminism i Chick lit jr. Novels
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Academic Quarter. - : Aalborg University. - 1904-0008. ; 8, s. 37-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article focuses on an example of chick lit jr., Meg Cabot’s Airhead-trilogy, and how feminism, postfeminism and girlpower are discussed in this text. The novels portray a conflict between the generations, where the daughter rejects her mother’s version of feminism. There is an interesting ambiguity in the text concerning feminist ideals which makes Cabot’s novels, along with many other examples of chick lit jr., difficult to define. But even if there’s a remnant of feminism in these novels, that version of feminism stays on the individual plane and never influences society as a whole.

  • Disturbing the Metaphor : Performance and Medial Presence in the Fiction of Elfriede Jelinek and Günter Grass
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Academic Quarter. - Aalborg : Aalborg Universitet. - 1904-0008. ; 16, s. 36-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, I want to discuss the way metaphors take form as diegetic actions in Elfriede Jelinek’s The Piano Teacher (1983) and Günter Grass’s Too Far Afield (1995). In these texts, the reader must literally picture what metaphorical language usually only conceptu-ally refers to. Both authors confront their readers with disturbing actions that are felt to be significant in some way; they resist straight-forward interpretation and rather provoke affective reactions. This deliberate disturbance of metaphorical language can be understood as medial presence effects. They foreground the mediality and mate-riality of language and literature. The way literature performs and functions as a medium is made visible and perceptible.

  • The making of a beach : Ecosystem services as mediator in the Anthropocene
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Academic Quarter. - : Aalborg Universitetsforlag. - 1904-0008. ; 26, s. 34-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Anthropocene, it becomes problematic to imagine a sustain-able balance between society and the environment. This calls for post-sustainability modes of articulating human/non-human rela-tionships. As an attempt towards an Anthropocenic understanding of society and the environment, we analyse how ecosystem services are mobilised in marine spatial planning in the south of Sweden. The study investigates how ecosystem services are understood and narrated in environmental strategy and interviews with environ-mental planners. We focus on seaweed and sand. These are two kinds of materials and potential resources that materially circulate   Volume2635The making of a beachFilippa SäweJohan HultmanCecilia Fredrikssonacademicquarterresearch from the humanitiesakademisk kvarterAAUand force together society and the environment in planning dis-course and practice. Our findings show that although ecosystem services are readily understood as an anthropocentric construc-tion, when mobilised in planning to manage an unruly nature they can be re-storied as an ontological mediator in human/non-human relations.

  • Circus days. The 1990s as an iconic period of time for Swedish Internet entrepreneurs
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Academic Quarter. - Aalborg : Aalborg Universitetsforlag. - 1904-0008. ; Jun:10, s. 53-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article is based on ethnographic fieldwork carried out on behalf of a research project about the Swedish startup/internet community and suggests that the 1990s can be seen as an iconic period of time for the Swedish Internet scene. It is argued that mental associations and imaginations associated with the 1990s are still relevant for the intellectual construction of the present-day internet-scene through providing a framework for the making of a space in Michel de Certeau’s sense of the word. The article presents reoccurring themes from the interviews with the informants, highlighted as examples of important stories about the 1990s that are active in constructing the framework for the organization of later experiences.
