  • Cyborg Figurations : Exploring the Intersections of Technology, Embodiment, Identity, and Ecology
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza. - Bologna : Tecnoscienza. - 2038-3460. ; 14:1, s. 123-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This cross-disciplinary exploration delves into the multifaceted intersec-tions of technology, embodiment, identity, and ecology through the lens of cyborg knowing. The first contribution focuses on the vulnerabilities faced by individuals with implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs), emphasizing the crucial need for acclimatization strategies and agency in navigating their cybernetic embodiment as “everyday cyborg”. The second contribu-tion critically examines cultural technologies revealing their role in perpet-uating biases and advocates for interdisciplinary approaches, drawing on feminist STS and cyborg theory, to adaptively reshape societal constructs. Lastly, the third contribution envisions a comprehensive theory of cyber-zoa that extends the cyborg figuration to encompass nonhuman animals, fostering a post-anthropocentric perspective and an ecologically attuned examination of power relations, exploitation, and symmetrical relation-ships. By engaging with the concept of the cyborg, these contributions shed light on the complex dynamics and transformative potentials inher-ent in the realm of technology for both human and nonhuman lives

  • Rethinking the Spaces of Standardisation through the Concept of Site
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza. - : Italian Society for Social Studies of Science and. - 2038-3460. ; 8:2, s. 151-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a site-based methodology for the study of standards and standardisation. Rather than consider standards as a global phenomenon, or theorise them as a network of relations, their spatiality is rethought as an outcome of their ongoing enactment. Both the moment of a standard’s implementation and its supporting apparatus are opened up to genealogical analysis using the work of feminist philosopher Karen Barad. In particular, her concepts of ‘apparatus’ and ‘iteration’ forge a link between the particularity of ‘site’, and the circulation and materialisation of standards. By following such an approach, a multitude of heterogeneous agencies are revealed, and with them, the potential for change.

  • Satefy in bushfire fighting : La sicurezza nella pratica dell’antincendio boschivo. Assonanze e dissonanze tra comunitá di pratiche"
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza. - 2038-3460. ; 2:2, s. 29-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study combines Science and Technology Studies interest on materiality with knowledge creation and transmission, typical concepts of Practicebased Studies. Knowledge is meant here as a process of socio-material connections. The analysis focuses on a “typical” place of knowledge transmission such as a training course, namely on safety connected to wild fire-fighting. The discursive mobilization of some safety objects during the training makes evident the conflicting positions between the Fire-Brigade and volunteers on safety and fire-fighting. In literature this communicative split is often considered as an obstacle to the development of common understanding and coordinated action. A deeper analysis of discursive interactions highlights the role that dissonance and conflict may play in softening the boundaries between communities of practice and in producing knowledge. The aim of the contribution is also to underline that knowledge not only is an effect of alignment but also of dis-alignment of human and non-human actors.

  • Affective Engagement in Knowledgemaking
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza. - 2038-3460. ; 12:2, s. 115-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides an overview of the discussion animating the track “Doing research in technoscience as affective engagement” organised at the VIII STS Italia Conference. By acknowledging the inheritance of feminist STS scholars in expanding the theoretical scope of care beyond its traditional sites, this session was devoted to exploring knowledge production as a matter of care as well as a form of affective engagement and entanglement with multiple Others while doing research. Two contributions were presented. The first ethnographically investigates Canadian blood donation practices by drawing on Haraway’s SF figure to develop what the speaker calls ‘Sanguine Figuration’. The second presentation relies on research of women’s animist practices amongst horses in Swiss Alps through a filmmaking practice influenced by Haraway’s work on the natureculture continuum and situated knowledge. Both studies embody efforts to develop non-representational research practices and experimental approaches showing the affective entanglement between researchers and researched, subject and object. Further, these contributions have highlighted the importance of conceptual creativity and imagination in building an apparatus that enables accounting for affective engagements in doing research in STS.

  • Ageing as a Boundary Object Thinking Differently of Ageing and Care
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza. - : TECNOSCIENZA. - 2038-3460. ; 11:2, s. 117-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ageing is not only a chronological matter. The following contributions at the crossroad of STS, material gerontology, design, and medical sociology offer alternative views on ageing and care. Ageing emerges as a boundary object through which authors explore the relationship with technologies and technology-based processes and practices. Authors point out that becoming older is a sociomaterial process and emphasize the importance of thinking with care when designing technology as well as the relevance of the socio-technical imaginary in conceptualizing older people.

  • When Theory meets Practice in Entanglements of Ageing and Technology
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza. - : STS Italia. - 2038-3460. ; 11:2, s. 5-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This special issue contributes to the new academic field known as Socio-gerontechnology, which has emerged at the cross-section of STS and Age Studies. All contributions published in the following pages explore what happens when theories meet practice in the relation between ageing and technology, by pointing out the role of design(ers) in configuring and reconfiguring such a relation. In line with the so-called "engaged program" in STS, these articles address different topics of political importance and pragmatic relevance. Indeed, they share the critique of ageist images that underlie public and specialist discourses around ageing and technology. By combining the emancipatory thrive of critical studies of age and ageing and the nuanced STS approach to the study of the entanglements of ageing and technology, this special issue offers a collection of theoretical elaborations and methodological considerations developed along with empirical analyses. Overall, they explore the practical politics of technology, within the growing field of Socio-gerontechnology.

  • A Different Kind of Story Tracing the Histories and Cultural Marks of Pirate Copied Film
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza. - 2038-3460. ; 7:1, s. 87-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pirate copied objects are fiery artifacts that have caused much anxiety and debate. This article explores the cultural biographies of one particular type of such objects; digital pirate copied films. More specifically, it traces two neglected aspects of such object's life histories: their entanglement in systems of standardization and quality control, and the ways in which new types of aesthetics and narratives are inscribed (or added to) pirated audiovisual content. Paying close attention to the layered and multifaceted dimensions of digital pirate copied film, the paper approaches the act of pirate copying as a form of transfiguration, and suggests that pirated objects are much more than plain replications. By housing a multiplicity of material identities and by carrying (and being surrounded by) alternative narratives of production, the article argues that these objects intervene, disorient, and disrupt the power dynamics of cinematic circulation and ultimately serve to queer commodity spheres.

  • The Good Sperm Cell : Ethnographic Explorations of Semen Quality
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza. - : The Italian Society of Science and Technology Studies STS ITALIA. - 2038-3460. ; 9:1, s. 9-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we compare the meaning and assessment of semenquality across three different contexts: male infertility, sperm donation, and in-vitro sperm. We ask how semen quality is determined in thesethree contexts and what kind of practices and normative choices theseevaluative processes involve. While the notion of good semen quality is oftenreduced to biomedical evidence, our analysis shows that it also drawson beliefs about what is desirable and what is not, producing biomedical evidencein light of specifically desired outcomes. Unpacking semen quality, bylooking at the specificities of how it is done across three different contexts,in this article we thus move beyond comprehending quality standards aspurely technical matters and reposition biomedical assessments of male reproductivepotential in their political and normative contexts.

  • Datafication from Below: Epistemology, Ambivalences, Challenges
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza-Italian Journal of Science & Technology Studies. - 2038-3460. ; 10:1, s. 89-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The "imperative of data" seems to be at the core of current debates concerning relationships between technology and society, as well as the status of knowledge, freedom and identity. Departing from the plenary roundtable Datafication and Technoscience from Below: Sharing, Moving, Opening at the 7th STS Italia Conference held in Padua (June 2018), the authors go through different aspects of the sociotechnical process of datafication, emphasizing from complementary STS perspectives some of the most urgent and emergent challenges posed by the constant exploitation of data at an economic and financial level. Topics covered are ambivalences of datafication and their consequences for everyday life (Pellegrino); the epistemological consequences of the "race to the bottom-up" and fake news as ultimate drift of such a race (Soderberg); data-logies and grassroots epistemologies as conditions for possibility for a datafication from below (Milan).

  • Co-production of Peer-to-Peer Care Practices: The Case of a Social Innovation in Elderly Care
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Tecnoscienza, Italian Journal of Science & Technology Studies. - 2038-3460. ; 11:2, s. 74-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyzes the co-production of peer-to-peer interactions as a social innovation that utilizes older people’s resources as a means for providing public care. We ethnographically explore an initiative named Give&Take that aims to establish peer-to-peer care among older people. We draw on a practice perspective with respect to care and its organization while also being influenced by the conceptualization of sociomateriality. The study illustrates the co-production of peer-to-peer care within a social innovationat the intersection of formal and informal care. We show how care practices and their specificities clash with institutionalized logics in the co-production of care. In conclusion, we argue that considering how care practices are shaped by a set of institutionalized logics in public innovations enhances our understanding of the co-production of care that draws on older people’s resources. These findings are of importance to innovations following EU policies on co-production and active aging.
