  • Exploring self-organization and self-adaption for smart manufacturing complex networks
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Engineering Management. - : Springer Nature. - 2095-7513 .- 2096-0255. ; 10:2, s. 206-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Trends toward the globalization of the manufacturing industry and the increasing demands for small-batch, short-cycle, and highly customized products result in complexities and fluctuations in both external and internal manufacturing environments, which poses great challenges to manufacturing enterprises. Fortunately, recent advances in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the widespread use of embedded processors and sensors in factories enable collecting real-time manufacturing status data and building cyber—physical systems for smart, flexible, and resilient manufacturing systems. In this context, this paper investigates the mechanisms and methodology of self-organization and self-adaption to tackle exceptions and disturbances in discrete manufacturing processes. Specifically, a general model of smart manufacturing complex networks is constructed using scale-free networks to interconnect heterogeneous manufacturing resources represented by network vertices at multiple levels. Moreover, the capabilities of physical manufacturing resources are encapsulated into virtual manufacturing services using cloud technology, which can be added to or removed from the networks in a plug-and-play manner. Materials, information, and financial assets are passed through interactive links across the networks. Subsequently, analytical target cascading is used to formulate the processes of self-organizing optimal configuration and self-adaptive collaborative control for multilevel key manufacturing resources while particle swarm optimization is used to solve local problems on network vertices. Consequently, an industrial case based on a Chinese engine factory demonstrates the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed model and method in handling typical exceptions. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism and method outperform the event-triggered rescheduling method, reducing manufacturing cost, manufacturing time, waiting time, and energy consumption, with reasonable computational time. This work potentially enables managers and practitioners to implement active perception, active response, self-organization, and self-adaption solutions in discrete manufacturing enterprises.

  • Role of local governments in fostering the development of an emerging industry: A market-oriented policy perspective
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Engineering Management. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2095-7513 .- 2096-0255. ; 7:3, s. 447-458
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research investigates the role of local governments in stimulating an emerging industry and focuses on the specific growth of the new energy vehicle industry in Hangzhou, China. This research confirms that enabling firms to access emerging technology, acquire financial support, and touch customers and/or suppliers are critical to foster the emergence and development of industries. Moreover, the primary contribution of this study is to emphasize the support of the local government in the development of emerging industries on the perspective of the creation of a large-scale market demand. The creation of large-scale market demand may inspire actors to be proactive in responding to these incentives; thus, public and private actions may help increase the accessibility to technology, infrastructure, and finances. Hence, a market-oriented policy that incentivizes the creation and expansion of market demand among diverse public and private actors should be seen as the key issue for the emergence and growth of emerging industries. Policies should also be adopted promptly with the development of the market.

  • IN2CLOUD : A novel concept for collaborative management of big railway data
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Engineering Management. - : Higher Education Press. - 2095-7513 .- 2096-0255. ; 4:4, s. 428-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the EU Horizon 2020 Shift2Rail Multi-Annual Action Plan, the challenge of railway maintenance is generating knowledge from data and/or information. Therefore, we promote a novel concept called “IN2CLOUD,” which comprises three sub-concepts, to address this challenge: 1) A hybrid cloud, 2) an intelligent cloud with hybrid cloud learning, and 3) collaborative management using asset-related data acquired from the intelligent hybrid cloud. The concept is developed under the assumption that organizations want/need to learn from each other (including domain knowledge and experience) but do not want to share their raw data or information. IN2CLOUD will help the movement of railway industry systems from “local” to “global” optimization in a collaborative way. The development of cutting-edge intelligent hybrid cloud-based solutions, including information technology (IT) solutions and related methodologies, will enhance business security, economic sustainability, and decision support in the field of intelligent asset management of railway assets.

  • Identifying subassemblies and understanding their functions during a design review in immersive and non-immersive virtual environments
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Engineering Management. - Switzerland : Springer. - 2095-7513 .- 2096-0255. ; 8:3, s. 412-428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design review (DR) is a product development (PD) activity used to inspect the technical characteristics of a design solution. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) technology enables the presentation of spatial information and interaction with 3D CAD models inside an immersive virtual environment (IVE). Such capabilities have shown the potential to mitigate the cognitive load needed for the visual perception of spatial information and, consequently, enhance design understanding and DR performance. Thus, an increasing number of studies have explored the effect of IVR technology on DR activities in different domains. However, determining when the implementation of IVR technology rather than a conventional user interface for DRs in mechanical engineering PD projects will be beneficial remains unclear. Hence, a conceptual DR experimental study was conducted to investigate the differences in the ability of engineering students to identify mechanisms and understand their functions when a design solution for a technical system is presented in an IVE by IVR technology and in a non-immersive virtual environment (nIVE) by a conventional user interface (monitor display, keyboard, and mouse). Data were collected by performing DR tasks and having participants complete a prior experience questionnaire, presence questionnaire, and mental rotations test. Findings of the study indicate that IVR does not support an enhanced ability of engineering students to identify mechanisms and understand their functions compared with a conventional user interface.

  • Preparing construction supply chains for blockchain technology: An investigation of its potential and future directions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Engineering Management. - : Springer. - 2095-7513 .- 2096-0255. ; 7, s. 547-563
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Blockchain, a peer-to-peer, controlled, distributed database structure, has the potential to profoundly affect current business transactions in the construction industry through smart contracts, cryptocurrencies, and reliable asset tracking. The construction industry is often criticized for being slow in embracing emerging technologies and not effectively diffusing them through its supply chains. Often, the extensive fragmentation, traditional procurement structures, destructive competition, lack of collaboration and transparency, low-profit margins, and human resources are shown as the main culprits for this. As blockchain technology makes its presence felt strongly in many other industries like finance and banking, this study investigates the preparation of construction supply chains for blockchain technology through an explorative analysis. Empirical data for the study were collected through semi-structured interviews with 17 subject experts. Alongside presenting a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis (SWOT), the study exhibits the requirements for and steps toward a construction supply structure facilitated by blockchain technology

  • An overview of solutions to the bus bunching problem in urban bus systems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Engineering Management. - 2096-0255 .- 2095-7513. ; In Press
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bus bunching has been a persistent issue in urban bus system since it first appeared, and it remains a challenge not fully resolved. This phenomenon may reduce the operational efficiency of the urban bus system, which is detrimental to the operation of fast-paced public transport in cities. Fortunately, extensive research has been undertaken in the long development and optimization of the urban bus system, and many solutions have emerged so far. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the existing solutions and serve as a guide for subsequent research in this area. Upon careful examination of current findings, it is found that, based on the different optimization objects, existing solutions to the bus bunching problem can be divided into five directions, i.e., operational strategy improvement, traffic control improvement, driver driving rules improvement, passenger habit improvement, and others. While numerous solutions to bus bunching are available, there remains a gap in research exploring the integrated application of methods from diverse directions. Furthermore, with the development of autonomous driving, it is expected that the use of modular autonomous vehicles could be the most potential solution to the issue of bus bunching in the future.

  • Data-driven rolling eco-speed optimization for autonomous vehicles
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Engineering Management. - 2096-0255 .- 2095-7513. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In urban settings, fluctuating traffic conditions and closely spaced signalized intersections lead to frequent emergency acceleration, deceleration, and idling in vehicles. These maneuvers contribute to elevated energy use and emissions. Advances in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication technologies allow autonomous vehicles (AVs) to perceive signals over long distances and coordinate with other vehicles, thereby mitigating environmentally harmful maneuvers. This paper introduces a data-driven algorithm for rolling eco-speed optimization in AVs aimed at enhancing vehicle operation. The algorithm integrates a deep belief network with a back propagation neural network to formulate a traffic state perception mechanism for predicting feasible speed ranges. Fuel consumption data from the Argonne National Laboratory in the United States serves as the basis for establishing the quantitative correlation between the fuel consumption rate and speed. A spatiotemporal network is subsequently developed to achieve eco-speed optimization for AVs within the projected speed limits. The proposed algorithm results in a 12.2% reduction in energy consumption relative to standard driving practices, without a significant extension in travel time.

  • Joint optimization of electric bus charging and energy storage system scheduling
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Engineering Management. - 2096-0255 .- 2095-7513. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The widespread use of energy storage systems in electric bus transit centers presents new opportunities and challenges for bus charging and transit center energy management. A unified optimization model is proposed to jointly optimize the bus charging plan and energy storage system power profile. The model optimizes overall costs by considering battery aging, time-of-use tariffs, and capacity service charges. The model is linearized by a series of relaxations of the nonlinear constraints. This means that we can obtain the exact solution of the model quickly with a commercial solver that is fully adapted to the time scale of day-ahead scheduling. The numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed method can optimize the bus charging time, charging power, and power profile of energy storage systems in seconds. Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the proposed method significantly reduces the cost and has sufficient robustness to uncertain fluctuations in photovoltaics and office loads.
