  • A compact accelerator driven neutron source at the Applied Nuclear Physics Laboratory, Lund University
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EPJ TECHNIQUES AND INSTRUMENTATION. - : Springer Nature. - 2195-7045. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Applied Nuclear Physics Group at Lund University has constructed a CANS (Compact Accelerator-driven Neutron Source). The CANS is based around a 3 MV, single-ended, Pelletron accelerator, which is used to impinge a 2.8 MeV deuterium beam into a beryllium target. The anticipated neutron production will be on the order of 10(10) n/s in 4 pi sr, with future upgrades expected to increase neutron production to 10(11) n/s. Neutron energy will be up to 9 MeV with peak emission at similar to 5 MeV. Shielding and moderation will be provided by a large water tank surrounding the target, with exit ports to allow moderated neutrons to be directed to experiments. The thermal-neutron flux at the exit of the extraction ports is anticipated to be up to 10(6) n/cm(2)/s. The CANS will be used to forward the activities of the group in the area of neutron-activation analysis, in addition to a broader range of neutron related applications.

  • Controlling the process of muon formation for muon-catalyzed fusion: method of non-destructive average muon sign detection
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: EPJ Techniques and Instrumentation. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2195-7045. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent development of intense muon sources (Holmlid, Swedish Patent SE 539,684 C 2 (2017)) is crucial for the use of muon-catalyzed fusion reactors (L. Holmlid, Fusion Science and Technology 75, 208 (2019)) which are likely to be the first generation of practical fusion reactors. For this purpose, only negative muons are useful. For existing sources where negative muons can be ejected (if not formed) preferentially, it is necessary to know the amount of negative muons to determine and optimize the fusion reactor efficiency on-line. Here, a method is developed to measure the absolute muon flux and its average sign without collecting or deflecting the muons. The muons from the patented muon generator have an energy of 100 MeV and above and an intensity of 1013 muons per laser pulse. Here, the detection of the relativistic laser-induced muons from H(0) is reported with a standard particle beam method, using a wire coil on a ferrite toroid as detector for the relativistic particles. The coil detection method shows that these relativistic particles are charged, thus not photons, neutrinos or neutral kaons. This makes the coil method superior to scintillator methods and it is the only possible method due to the large muon intensity. If an equal number of positive and negative mouns passed the coil, no signal would be observed. The signal at the coil in the case shown here is due to relativistic positive muons as concluded from a signal charge sign verification in the coil.

  • PPMS-based set-up for Raman and luminescence spectroscopy at high magnetic field, high pressure and low temperature
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: EPJ Techniques and Instrumentation. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2195-7045. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an experimental set-up permitting Raman and luminescence spectroscopy studies in a commercial Physical Properties Measurement System (PPMS) from Quantum Design. Using this experimental set-up, gaseous, liquid and solid materials, in bulk or thin film form, may be investigated. The set-up is particularly suitable for the study of the spin-lattice coupling in strongly correlated oxide materials utilizing several different stimuli, e.g. magnetic and electric fields, high pressure and low temperatures. Details for the Raman extension, sample holder assembly and optical design, as well as data acquisition and measurement routine are described. Finally, we present exemplary results collected using the set-up, measured on reference materials, as well as on a correlated transition metal oxide.

  • Low-energy spin-physics experiments with polarized beams and targets at the COSY storage ring
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: EPJ TECHNIQUES AND INSTRUMENTATION. - : Springer. - 2195-7045. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A low-energy spin-physics program is being developed at the COSY storage ring. To support the planned experimental activities, several experimental tools for polarized beams and targets have been developed. The paper presents the physics case and the readiness of the setup for its realization.

  • Status report of the n_TOF facility after the 2nd CERN long shutdown period
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EPJ TECHNIQUES AND INSTRUMENTATION. - : Springer Nature. - 2195-7045. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the second long shutdown period of the CERN accelerator complex (LS2, 2019-2021), several upgrade activities took place at the n_TOF facility. The most important have been the replacement of the spallation target with a next generation nitrogen-cooled lead target. Additionally, a new experimental area, at a very short distance from the target assembly (the NEAR Station) was established. In this paper, the core commissioning actions of the new installations are described. The improvement in the n_TOF infrastructure was accompanied by several detector development projects. All these upgrade actions are discussed, focusing mostly on the future perspectives of the n_TOF facility. Furthermore, some indicative current and future measurements are briefly reported.

  • Accelerator techniques and nuclear data needs for ion beam analysis of wall materials in controlled fusion devices
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EPJ TECHNIQUES AND INSTRUMENTATION. - : Springer Nature. - 2195-7045. ; 10:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A brief overview of ion beam analysis methods and procedures in studies of materials exposed to fusion plasmas in controlled fusion devices with magnetic confinement is presented. The role of accelerator techniques in the examination and testing of materials for fusion applications is emphasised. Quantitative results are based on robust nuclear data sets, i.e. stopping powers and reaction cross-sections. Therefore, the work has three major strands: (i) assessment of fuel inventory and modification of wall materials by erosion and deposition processes; (ii) equipment development to perform cutting-edge research; (iii) determination of nuclear data for selected ion-target combinations. Advantages and limitations of methods are addressed. A note is also given on research facilities with capabilities of handling radioactive and beryllium-contaminated materials.
