  • Information and communication technology-mediated support for working carers of older family members : an integrative literature review
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Policy Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 1:2, s. 247-273
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How best to support working carers is being paid increased attention across Europe and internationally. This article examines a largely unexplored area within the empirical literature, namely, information and communication technology-mediated support for working carers of older people. Using an integrative review methodology to draw on both quantitative and qualitative data, 14 studies were identified. Themes included making work–life balance easier, reducing the burden of caregiving and promoting well-being. Factors to consider in the design, implementation and evaluation of innovative support solutions for working carers are put forward. However, a lack of longitudinal studies and biased samples warrants further investigation.

  • Material and relational challenges of home-based renal care : a parental perspective on child chronic kidney disease
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - Bristol, United Kingdom : Policy Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 6:4, s. 547-563
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Caring for a child with chronic kidney disease (CKD) requires parents to reorganise mundane routines and develop advanced technical skills. Parents’ strategies used to meet these challenges need greater understanding. This article takes inspiration from phenomenology of practice and material culture studies to analyse interviews with parents in Portugal. It shows that, although home-based care leads to worsened social inequities, parents use the available financial and human resources to manage the situation and create normality. While they experience becoming confined and close relationships are strained, the mundane practices and social relations of care bring hope and meaning to the family.

  • Manoeuvring challenging demands: care managers, the Free Choice System and older users of home care services with reduced decision-making capacity
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Bristol University Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 4:4, s. 479-495
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to describe and analyse how care managers experience and manage the Swedish Free Choice System in relation to older users of home care services with reduced decision-making capacity. The empirical data were generated by focus group interviews with care managers working in local eldercare authorities that had implemented the Free Choice System. The findings reveal that care managers used various strategies, and justifications for them, based on various coexisting logics: the market logic; the logic of public administration; and the logic of care.

  • The precariousness of asylum-seekers’ care and support : Informal care within and because of the immigration process
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Policy Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 7:1, s. 50-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using ethnographic data, this article aims to analyse the provision of informal care by asylum-seekers in Sweden and how this intersects with the(ir) asylum process. The article argues that asylum-seekers are framed by the Swedish welfare system and immigration authorities as ungrievable and deportable, which not only impedes their access to formal care systems and values, but also creates a strong need for informal care. Further, it is suggested that the informal care provided by asylum-seekers should be included in current debate on informal care and its impact on people’s lives.

  • Implications of the use of migrant care work and web-based services on family caregivers' health
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : POLICY PRESS. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 3:1, s. 97-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article illustrates the implications of two recent trends on family carers' health: the employment of home-based migrant care workers; and the provision of web-based supports. The main factors traditionally associated with carers' health are used to analyse the results of a six-country study via a multilevel linear regression. Attention will be dedicated to the role of migrant care workers, who are often hired by private households to provide eldercare. Finally, web-based services for carers will be investigated by considering InformCare, a recently implemented European platform tested on a sample of carers from three countries (Germany, Italy and Sweden).

  • Existential loneliness and meaning-in-life in the lived experience of nursing home residents
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Policy Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; , s. 19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study expands our understanding of how existential loneliness and meaning-in-life might be connected in the lived experience of nursing home residents. A secondary analysis of interviews with nursing home residents (n = 8) was conducted. The analysis starts inductively using template analysis, and ends deductively, with a theoretical framework guiding the process. Existential loneliness and meaning-in-life are prominent in nursing home residents’ everyday lives and relate to relationships and vulnerable situations involving (1) being seen, (2) trust in life and (3) looking forward. To enhance existential well-being in nursing home residents, facilitating meaningful relationships and experiences is essential.

  • The first cross-national study of adolescent young carers aged 15–17 in six European countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Policy Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 7:1, s. 6-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the first time, this article will provide a cross-national profile of adolescents who provide unpaid care to their ill or disabled family members in six European countries with varied levels of awareness, policy and service provision regarding adolescent young carers. Utilising an online survey, 2,099 adolescent young carers were identified in Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. This article focuses on the impact of unpaid care on their mental health, well-being, physical health and education. Their preferences for informal and formal support were also examined. These groundbreaking findings help promote a ‘rights’ approach to adolescent young carers, which can serve as a critical driver for supportive policy creation on both a country-specific and pan-European level.

  • Exploring the knowledge contributions of carers involved in a group process aimed at co-creating a targeted support intervention
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Bristol University Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 7:3, s. 479-497
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patient and public involvement is a way of ensuring that research and practices are more responsive to their target groups. This study, inspired by discourse psychology, explores the knowledge contributions of informal carers who participated in group meetings to co-create a support intervention. Findings highlight that carers’ knowledge is complex, including more than practical caring experiences. Acknowledging carers’ knowledge contributions and involving a heterogeneous sample of carers are key considerations for patient and public involvement in research; otherwise, there is a danger of establishing risks of injustice. Accepting the multifaceted knowledge of carers could increase the validity of research and the relevance of interventions developed.

  • Talking about what matters : a systematic search and review exploring barriers and facilitators for implementing outcome-focused conversations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Bristol University Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 7:4, s. 619-636
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Unpaid carers form the backbone of health and care systems. Caregiving can be rewarding but can also diminish carer well-being. Many policies recognise that outcome-focused assessments are the foundation of effective support. In practice, carers can struggle to access these, preventing the realisation of carer-oriented policy goals. This systematic search and review explored literature concerning adult carer outcome assessment, retrieving 21 eligible studies spanning work in five countries. A narrative synthesis highlighted the skilled nature of the practice involved, alongside long-standing implementation barriers. We make evidence-based recommendations for policy implementation, with potential to improve outcomes for carers, practitioners and organisations.

  • Nursing homes with lifestyle profiles - part of the marketisation of Swedish eldercare
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Policy Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 2:1, s. 49-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish nursing home residents are very frail, but a new trend is for nursing homes to adopt a lifestyle profile. Based on interviews with 16 representatives of care organisations, this study investigates the reasons for adopting profiles in this way. The analysis shows that the existence of lifestyle profiles is strongly linked to a market discourse centred on freedom of choice. It is concluded that lifestyle profiles are used as a differentiation strategy in order to justify marketisation, exposing the Swedish eldercare system – which does not permit competition on the basis of price or standards of care – to market forces.

  • Democratic care ‘for all’ and trade-offs: the public solution, civil society and the market
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal for Care and Caring. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 4:1, s. 75-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scholarly discussions on the political power of care and care ethics have considered democratic notions such as how care recipients can make their voices heard, but recently the problem has been expanded to include how care needs can be met in a manner consistent with democratic commitments to justice, equality and freedom for all’, which addresses equal access to care. Assessing the possibilities to meet this requirement shows different trade-offs in civil society, the market and publicly funded solutions. It seems that the ideals of care ethics, such as democratic access to care, sit more comfortably with publicly funded care.

  • Struggles for Recognition and Redistribution : Family Carers and Domestic Workers in Spanish Eldercare
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 2:4, s. 459-476
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Theories of social justice have identified the revaluation of caregiving work as a global challenge. Still, struggles for recognition are shaped by the specific cultural and institutional contexts in which they emerge. This article explores struggles for the recognition of caregiving work in Spanish eldercare, focusing on advocacy for family carers and for domestic workers. Drawing on interviews, findings reveal that domestic workers' needs are politicised to a greater extent than family carers' needs; empowerment and claims for workers' rights contrast with notions of self-care and mutual support. While the struggles are differentiated, the undervaluation of eldercare is a common theme.

  • Working longer, caring harder – the impact of ‘ageing-in-place’ policies on working carers in the UK and Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 1:1, s. 115-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most developed countries have introduced significant changes in housing and longterm care policies for older people. Simultaneously, there is increasing policy and economic emphasis on extending working lives and on changes to pension schemes. These changes have combined to have negative consequences for working-age family carers. In this contribution, Madeleine Starr MBE, Director of Business Development and Innovation at Carers UK, and Marta Szebehely, Professor of Social Work at Stockholm University, Sweden, discuss the situations in the UK and Sweden – two countries with different policy traditions but facing similar challenges.

  • “I don’t care if they call me black” : the impact of organisation and racism in Canadian and Swedish nursing homes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 5:4, s. 631-650
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nursing homes for seniors are an integral part of the Canadian and Swedish welfare states; however, daily work takes place within different organisational contexts. In contrast to Sweden, Canadian nursing homes are larger, have lower staffing levels and are oriented towards a medical care model. In both countries, shaped by staffing shortages, there are more racialised workers employed in the care sector. Earlier research has noted how racialised staff might be exposed to racism from residents. In this study, we explore care workers’ experiences of racism and their perceptions of how racism is managed in the different organisational contexts.

  • Dimensions of job precariousness and associations with workers’ health and well-being in Swedish homecare
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 6:3, s. 335-354
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although international research has shown an increase in precarious work in recent decades, few of these studies have been devoted to paid care work. This article joins feminist research on care work with work–life balance-oriented research on precarious work to study the work situation of Swedish homecare workers. The results show a high prevalence of multidimensional precariousness among the care workers and reveal how several indicators of job precariousness are associated with physical and mental strain, poor work–life balance, and intentions to quit the job, including time pressure, lack of job control and limited possibilities to develop and use skills, as well as to create and keep relations with users.

  • Care workers’ ambivalence towards family care partners : informal decision-making processes when older people consider relocation to a residential home
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - : Policy Press. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X. ; 4:4, s. 513-530
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to reveal how care workers in the home-help service interpret the influence of family care partners when older people’s relocation to a residential home is considered. Based on interviews with 33 care workers, this article investigates how they use their discretion. The analysis shows that the care workers express ambivalence towards family care workers and that they informally influence decision-making processes despite prevailing care management systems. The conclusion drawn are that welfare ideas in transformation and diffuse areas of responsibility may not benefit either care workers, family care partners or a care receiver’s self-determination.

  • Overcommitment and employee outcomes in Swedish eldercare : the buffering effects of role clarity and leader support
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Care and Caring. - 2397-8821 .- 2397-883X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Poor working conditions and high employee turnover in eldercare have frequently been addressed over the years. The aim of the study is to examine the relation between work overcommitment and employee well-being and turnover intentions in eldercare and whether leader support and role clarity moderate the relation between overcommitment and employee outcomes. A questionnaire was distributed to workplaces in eight Swedish municipalities. The results show that overcommitment was related to employees’ impaired well-being, as well as to their turnover intentions. We also found that leader support buffered the negative effects of overcommitment. The role clarity was quite high; however, it did not have a moderating effect.

  • Devoted work without limits? Activities and premises of home visit work at the margins of community care
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International journal of care and caring. - 2397-8821. ; 5:2, s. 247-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Community care provided through home visits is an increasingly common way to respond to adult citizens’ complex needs due to, for example, mental health and substance abuse problems. This study explores the activities and core premises that this work entails. The data contain six focus group interviews with practitioners in five service settings in Finland and Sweden at the margins of community care. Through a two-stage coding process, 11 activities and three premises – situationality, boundlessness and empathy – were identified. The findings show that home visit work at the margins of community care is comprehensive and flexible, requiring reflexivity.
