  • Supporting Vehicle-to-Everything Services by 5G New Radio Release-16 Systems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Standards Magazine. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2471-2825. ; 4:1, s. 26-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Release-16 of the 5G New Radio (NR), developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), includes technology enablers for advanced vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication services that go far beyond those offered by Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems. In particular, the Release-16 NR cellular interface and the NR sidelink interface are designed to enable platooning, advanced driving such as collision avoidance and cooperative lane change, extended sensors, and remote driving use cases. Compared to the LTE sidelink, the NR sidelink is equipped with a host of new capabilities including physical layer unicast and groupcast, reliable communication using feedback-based retransmissions, operation in millimeter-wave frequencies, advanced resource allocation, and quality of service management. In this article, we summarize the outcome of the related work carried out in 3GPP and discuss how the Release-16 NR capabilities can be used to provide advanced V2X services. We conclude by discussing next steps of the V2X service evolution and the NR sidelink capabilities.

  • Guest Editorial : Recent and Future Evolution of Wi-Fi
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Standards Magazine. - 2471-2825. ; 6:2, s. 8-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The IEEE 802.11 standard, often referred to as Wi-Fi, underpins wireless networking applications around the world that impact our daily lives, such as wireless access to the Internet from offices, homes, airports, hotels, restaurants, trains, and aircraft. Today's laptops, tablets, and smartphones are typically equipped with at least one IEEE 802.11 radio. IEEE 802.11 standards have enabled a whole range of applications for wireless communications, and their relevance continues to expand. This is made possible with the emergence of new devices, supporting new applications such as the Internet of Things (IoT), localization, and sensing. Wi-Fi is, and will continue to be, a key technology that is shaping the future of consumers and businesses worldwide.

  • Bringing 5G into Rural and Low-Income Areas : Is It Feasible?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Standards Magazine. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2471-2825. ; 1:3, s. 50-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nowadays, at least two billion people are experiencing a complete lack of wireless cellular network coverage. These users live in rural areas and low-income regions, where network operators are not keen to invest, mainly due to high capital expenditure and operational expenditure costs, as well as the scarcity of electricity from the grid. We tackle this challenge by proposing a 5G network explicitly designed to serve rural and low-income areas. Our solution investigates the possibility of mounting remote radio heads on top of unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as large cells (LCs) to increase the coverage range. In addition, 5G nodes are powered by solar panels and batteries. Preliminary results, obtained over three representative case studies located in Italy, Cook Islands, and Zimbabwe, show that providing connectivity in rural and low-income areas by means of the proposed 5G architecture is feasible. At the same time, we also show that the monthly subscription fee paid by the users can be kept sufficiently low, that is, less than €1/month in low-income areas, and around €11/month in rural regions.

  • Supporting Enhanced Vehicle-to-Everything Services by LTE Release 15 Systems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Standards Magazine. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 2471-2825. ; 3:1, s. 26-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recognizing the increasing demand for intelligent transportation systems, the initial set of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) technical enablers for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication services has been substantially enhanced in Release 15 (Rel-15) and will be further developed in Rel-16. These enhancements are driven by the 25 use cases identified for V2X by the Third Generation Partnership Project, which are categorized as vehicle platooning, extended sensors, advanced driving, and remote driving. In this article, we provide an overview of the new V2X features supported by Rel-15 LTE systems, including carrier aggregation, higher-order modulation, low latency support, and new resource management solutions. We also discuss the possible next steps of the 3GPP V2X technology evolution in the upcoming releases.

  • Architecture, Protocols, and Algorithms for Location-Aware Services in beyond 5G Networks
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Standards Magazine. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2471-2825. ; 6:4, s. 88-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The automotive and railway industries are rapidly transforming with a strong drive toward automation and digitalization, with the goal of increased convenience, safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Since assisted and fully automated automotive and train transport services increasingly rely on vehicle-to-everything communications and high-accuracy real-time positioning, it is necessary to continuously maintain high-accuracy localization, even in occlusion scenes such as tunnels, urban canyons, or areas covered by dense foliage. In this article, we review the 5G positioning framework of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project in terms of methods and architecture and propose enhancements to meet the stringent requirements imposed by the transport industry. In particular, we highlight the benefit of fusing cellular and sensor measurements, and discuss required architecture and protocol support for achieving this at the network side. We also propose a positioning framework to fuse cellular network measurements with measurements by onboard sensors. We illustrate the viability of the proposed fusion-based positioning approach using a numerical example.

  • IoT and machine-type communication
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Standards Magazine. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2471-2825. ; 3:2, s. 44-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The two articles in this special section examine the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-type communications. IoT is about connecting devices and creating related applications to suit a business and economic need. One of its value propositions is automation. As the industry and academia understand the “plumbing” part of IoT and refine emerging business models such as ones based on software as a service (SaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS), the new developments increasingly focus on: Cross-domain interoperability; data analytics and the emergence of data marketplaces for IoT; and dealing with new application domains in a cost optimized manner, in particular ones that require low latency, high resiliency and availability, and so on.
