  • Seventh International Conference on the Foundations of Information Science (FIS 2017): Structure, Dynamics, Complexity in the Informational Nature
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - Gothenburg, Sweden : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 1:3, s. 1-3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information Science evolved in the last few decades from peripheral studies of other disciplines which used the concept of information with a more or less common-sense meaning, to a fully-fledged discipline with a growing toolkit of concepts and methods of inquiry. This does not mean that the concept of information acquired a unique definition across research and application fields or that there is a consensus regarding its theoretical description. However no nontrivial concept of science or philosophy has such unchallenged, uniform formulation. • UV-assisted gate bias cycling in gas-sensitive field-effect transistors
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 2:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Static and dynamic responses of a silicon carbide field-effect transistor gas sensor have been investigated at two different gate biases in several test gases. Especially the dynamic effects are gas dependent and can be used for gas identification. The addition of ultraviolet light reduces internal electrical relaxation effects, but also introduces new, temperature-dependent effects.

  • 3D Gas Distribution with and without Artificial Airflow : An Experimental Study with a Grid of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Gas Sensors
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - Basel, Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 2:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gas distribution modelling can provide potentially life-saving information when assessing the hazards of gaseous emissions and for localization of explosives, toxic or flammable chemicals. In this work, we deployed a three-dimensional (3D) grid of metal oxide semiconductor (MOX) gas sensors deployed in an office room, which allows for novel insights about the complex patterns of indoor gas dispersal. 12 independent experiments were carried out to better understand dispersion patters of a single gas source placed at different locations of the room, including variations in height, release rate and air flow profiles. This dataset is denser and richer than what is currently available, i.e., 2D datasets in wind tunnels. We make it publicly available to enable the community to develop, validate, and compare new approaches related to gas sensing in complex environments.

  • Morphological Computing and Cognitive Agency
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings (MDPI). - Gothenburg, Sweden : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 1:3, s. 185-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Morphological computing, at its core, entails that the morphology (shape + material properties) of an agent (a living organism or a machine) enables and constrains its possible (physical and social)interactions with the environment as well as its development, including its growth and reconfiguration. The role of such computation in cognitive systems includes the off-loading of control onto the body and its interaction with the environment thus enabling flexible and adaptivebehavior. In a more general sense, cognitive agency instantiated by the interaction processes of morphological structures in networks of networks of cognitive agents from cells to organisms and societies is a basis of understanding of embodiment of cognition on variety of levels of (self-)organisation of physical matter from its basic physical structures via chemistry and biology with life itself as cognitive process.

  • Optimization of the Internal Structure and Shape of a 470 Dinghy Centerboard
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings (MDPI). - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 49:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to design an improved centerboard for the Olympic 470 sailing dinghy sailing upwind. The design is improved by introducing a composite design that makes the centerboard twist to windward when sailing upwind, thereby reducing the angle of attack of the hull. The results show that a beneficial twist up to 1.5° is possible to achieve without compromising the centerboard strength. According to our estimates, by utilizing the improved design it is possible to obtain a gain of up to 9 s per race in a world cup race.

  • The Behavior of Badminton Shuttlecocks from an Engineering Point of View
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings (MDPI). - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 2:6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This was a study of the properties of a badminton shuttle. The analysed feather was made of the brand Yonex. The properties related to the trajectory were analysed by two experiments. The first experiment provided data for the trajectory by using a camera system to capture the properties of the trajectory. Position and velocity were used to draw conclusions about the deviation to the right, as seen from the hitter. The experiment generated discrete points which made it possible to plot the data, the accuracy was estimated to ±1 cm and ±0.5 m/s. The second experiment examined the rotation of the shuttle by using a high-speed camera to capture the rotation of the shuttle. By measuring the rotation at discrete distances from the hitter, the development of the rotational speed was captured, with an accuracy of ±30 rotations per minute. The experiments described and explained a connection between sideways deviation and rotation.

  • Iron oxide nanoparticle decorated graphene for ultra-sensitive detection of volatile organic compounds
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 2:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been found that two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, can be used as remarkable gas detection platforms as even minimal chemical interactions can lead to distinct changes in electrical conductivity. In this work, epitaxially grown graphene was decorated with iron oxide nanoparticles for sensor performance tuning. This hybrid surface was used as a sensing layer to detect formaldehyde and benzene at concentrations of relevance in air quality monitoring (low parts per billion). Moreover, the time constants could be drastically reduced using a derivative sensor signal readout, allowing detection at the sampling rates desired for air quality monitoring applications.

  • Epitaxial graphene sensors combined with 3D printed microfluidic chip for heavy metals detection
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 2:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two-dimensional materials may constitute key elements in the development of a sensing platform where extremely high sensitivity is required, since even minimal chemical interaction can generate appreciable changes in the electronic state of the material. In this work, we investigate the sensing performance of epitaxial graphene on Si-face 4H-SiC (EG/SiC) for liquid-phase detection of heavy metals (e.g., Pb). The integration of preparatory steps needed for sample conditioning is included in the sensing platform, exploiting fast prototyping using a 3D printer, which allows direct fabrication of a microfluidic chip incorporating all the features required to connect and execute the Lab-on-chip (LOC) functions. It is demonstrated that interaction of Pb2+ ions in water-based solutions with the EG enhances its conductivity exhibiting a Langmuir correlation between signal and Pb2+ concentration. Several concentrations of Pb2+ solutions ranging from 125 nM to 500 µM were analyzed showing good stability and reproducibility over time.

  • Novel Skin-Electrode Conductive Adhesives to Improve the Quality of Recorded Body Signals in Smart Medical Garments
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: MDPI Proceedings. - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A main barrier to widespread use of electrocardiography garments for long term heart monitoring of elderly and patients is a poor skin-electrode signal transfer because of a high contact impedance and sensitivity to movement. This leads to unwanted disturbances and errors in recorded signals when the patient moves or even breathe, affecting the reliability and quality of the signals especially for patients with dry/old skin. In two different projects at the University of Borås, we have developed two novel products to solve the above problem; (1) an ongoing project that has fabricated a reusable and sustainable electro-conductive adhesive applicable between the skin and high-porous textile electrodes, and (2) a patent-pending skin-electrode glue (BioEl Glue®) which is a biocompatible electro-conductive water-soluble glue used between skin and low-porous textile electrodes.

  • A Customised Finn Dinghy Rudder for Optimal Olympic Performance
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings (MDPI). - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 49:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Because of the long history of the Finn Dinghy sailing class, the difference between a gold medal and a mediocre result often comes down to personal mistakes of the sailor, or to who has the most optimised equipment. Regarding the latter, the Finn class rules permit certain design variations of the hull, mast, sail and rudder. In the current contribution, we describe a method for developing a customised rudder system aimed at optimal performance during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Based on hydrodynamic analysis of existing rudder designs, an improved rudder geometry was developed. Based on the concept geometry, the rudder and tiller were structurally designed and manufactured to achieve high stiffness and sufficient strength, while respecting the minimum mass requirements as specified by the rules.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings (MDPI). - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 47:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of operator is exceedingly important in many areas as a tool of theoretical studies and practical applications. Here, we introduce the operator theory of computing, opening new opportunities for the exploration of computing devices, networks, and processes. In particular, the operator approach allows for the solving of many computing problems in a more general context of operating spaces. In addition, operator representation of computing devices and their networks allows for the construction of a variety of operator compositions and the development of new schemas of computation as well as network and computer architectures using operations with operators. Besides, operator representation allows for the efficient application of the axiomatic technique for the investigation of computation.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a diversity of different types and kinds of information. To organize this huge collection into a system, it is necessary to classify information with respect to various criteria developing a multiscale (multiaspect) information taxonomy, in which each dimension is an aspect information taxonomy. We construct such a multiscale (multiaspect) information taxonomy based on the general theory of information [1–3] and making use of its principles and technical tools.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings (MDPI). - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 81:1, s. 124-127
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New social environments are emerging as spaces and places where work and life at home are no longer separate. Digital spaces and physical places have become intertwined: the 1st space is home, the 2nd is work, the 3rd is informal meeting places, while the 4th space represents different combinations of the previous ones. This paper describes the need for value-based designs of the 4th space through a transdisciplinary approach. We argue for a need to understand human interactions in physical and digital spaces from a user-centered perspective, meaning to understand user needs and preferences of digital content in physical and virtual spaces. Moreover, we point out the need to address identity, ethical, and legal requirements of these types of spaces. Finally, we address the need to connect emerging technologies such as AI, and design approaches such a gamification, with cognitive, structural, economic, social and technological challenges and opportunities of the 4th space.

    • This paper presents the highlights from the Boundaries of Disinformation workshop held at the Chalmers University of Technology. It addresses the phenomenon of disinformation—its historical and current forms. Digitalization and hyperconnectivity have been identified as leading contemporary sources of disinformation. In the effort to counteract disinformation globally, diverse strategies have been proposed. However, it is important not to forget the need for the balance between individual freedom of expression and institutionalized societal thinking used to prevent the spreading of disinformation. The important aspect of the solution is that the debate about adequate and truthful information, as opposed to disinformation, involves stakeholders.

  • Morphological Computation as Natural Ecosystem Service for Intelligent Technology
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings (MDPI). - Basel Switzerland : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 81:1, s. 125-128
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The basic idea of natural computing is learning from nature. The naturalist framework provides an info-computational architecture for cognizing agents, modeling living organisms as informational structures with computational dynamics. Intrinsic natural information processes can be used as natural ecosystem services to perform resource-efficient computation, instead of explicitly controlling every step of the computational process. In robotics, morphological computing is using inherent material properties to produce behavior like passive walking or grasping. In general, morphology (structure, shape, form, material) is self-organizing into dynamic structures resulting in growth, development, and decision-making that represent processes of embodied cognition and constitute the naturalized basis of intelligent behavior.

  • 2020

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to the currently dominant view, cognitive science is a study of mind and intelligence focused on computational models of knowledge in humans. It is described in terms of symbol manipulation over formal language. This approach is connected with a variety of unsolvable problems, as pointed out by Thagard. In this paper, I argue that the main reason for the inadequacy of the traditional view of cognition is that it detaches the body of a human as the cognizing agent from the higher-level abstract knowledge generation. It neglects the dynamical aspects of cognitive processes, emotions, consciousness, and social aspects of cognition. It is also uninterested in other cognizing agents such as other living beings or intelligent machines. Contrary to the traditional computationalism in cognitive science, the morphological computation approach offers a framework that connects low-level with high-level approaches to cognition, capable of meeting challenges listed by Thagard. To establish this connection, morphological computation generalizes the idea of computation from symbol manipulation to natural/physical computation and the idea of cognition from the exclusively human capacity to the capacity of all goal-directed adaptive self-reflective systems, living organisms as well as robots. Cognition is modeled as a layered process, where at the lowest level, systems acquire data from the environment, which in combination with the already stored data in the morphology of an agent, presents the basis for further structuring and self-organization of data into information and knowledge.

  • Ingår i: Proceedings (MDPI). - 2504-3900. ; 1:3, s. 235-238

    • Habits and rituals play a fundamental role in human life [1] and are worthy to be considered also because they represent a form of embodied knowledge. According to Dubray, habits can bestudied in general, but also with the focus on their physiological, psychological, ethical, pedagogical, philosophical and theological aspects. They have been analyzed mostly by disciplines likeanthropology, sociology and psychology. Nowadays, the importance of habits is recognized in the development of robotics, where the problem is to help elderly or sick people to continue their ordinary life and practices. Philosophy as well offers interesting analyses from different perspectives, from Aristotle to Bourdieu. Aristotle relates habits to virtues, while Peircean habits connect to the life of symbols in relation to their embodied grounding.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 86, s. 10-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-frequency shock-type vibration (HFV) with a frequency content mainly above 1250 Hz, e.g., from impact wrenches, is likely to cause a significant amount of vibration injuries and even hand-arm vibration syndrome. The objective of this study was to measure vibration up to 100 kHz with a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) and investigate the variation of vibration over the machine surface, the vibration propagation into finger tissue, and the vibration reduction on the finger tissue due to a foamed polymer layer. Our results showed that the vibration on the handle varies moderately and that the amplitudes are higher on the machine surface. A large proportion of the vibration is transferred into the finger tissue and thereby subjects the finger tissue to high-vibration amplitudes, but it is effectively reduced by a thin layer of foamed polymer.

    • During the last decades, the world has been going through major technological, economic and social changes. The evolutionary process has brought people together through flows of communication into global digital networks to an extent that scientists have started to talk of the rise of a new geological era called "Anthroposcene". The paper “Programming the State – Digital Technology and Institutional Design” focuses on political aspects of the on-going technological transformation bringing us into a digital society. The aim is to discuss the relation between political and technological change by applying historical institutional theory to explain and understand how ideas and ideology are embedded into digital political institutions. The discussion starts by explaining the basic concepts used in historical institutional theory such as path dependency and formative moments. I then turn to a theory of history formulated by R.G. Collingwood, as this help to understand how the formation of political institutions may be studied in terms of a design process. My argument is that in order to understand the design of political institutions we have to include the study of political ideology since ideologies serve as the design plan for specific institutional solutions. If we are to understand the logic of digitalisation we therefore have to be aware of which ideas that are embedded into digital technological solutions. The paper ends with a discussion on the implications that may be drawn by this argument and whether or not it is possible to turn back from a path once chosen to step upon.

  • Definition and Quantification of Shock/Peak/Transient Vibration
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; :1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vibration injury in the hand–arm system from hand-held machines is one of the most common occupational health injuries. Machines emitting high-frequency shock vibrations, e.g., impact wrenches have since long been identified as a special risk factor. In legislative and standard texts, the terms shock, impact, peak and transient vibration are frequently used to underline the special risks associated with these kinds of vibrations. Despite this fact, in the literature there is not a mathematically stringent definition of either shock vibration or how the amplitude of the shock is defined. In this study, we suggest algorithms for definition and quantification of these terms and apply them to machine vibrations of various kinds.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - 2504-3900. ; 86:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since its initial publication in 1986, ISO 5439 has been unclear on the evaluation of isolated and repeated shock vibration. In 2015, an expert’s workshop was held in conjunction with the 13th International Conference that identified features of a vibration signal that may be important for predicting health outcomes, including high-frequency vibration and shock. Since then, ISO standards have been drafted on the measurement of shock and measurement of high-frequency vibrations, and in the European Union, a proposed revision of machinery supply legislation will require manufacturers to provide information on the average peak amplitude of acceleration. The Nancy Workshop introduced the issue of hand-transmitted (mechanical) shock (HTS) and work currently active within International Standards groups, and discussed options for defining HTS measurement. The workshop concluded that HTS is likely to present different risks to those of continuous hand–arm vibration, and that, therefore, there is a need for different metrics, and that high-frequency vibration is an important component of many HTS sources, e.g., impact wrenches, nail guns, riveting hammers, etc.; therefore, HTS evaluation should include higher frequencies of vibration, possibly up to 10 kHz.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 6, s. 33-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Workers in the rock face stabilisation sector are exposed to high levels of vibration from pneumatic rock drills, which can lead to vibration injuries. The work situation is also ergonomically challenging since the work often is performed on steep cliffs with heavy equipment and a substantial degree of dust exposure. To reduce exposure to vibrations, the equipment has been redesigned, including the machine’s handle, feeding hoist and the implementation of a reciprocating mass generating a counter force to reduce the vibrations. As a side project, a dust removal device was also developed. It was shown that vibration and dust exposure can be substantially reduced.

  • Fingertip Model for Analysis of High-Frequency Vibrations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - : MDPI. - 2504-3900. ; 88:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-frequency shock-type vibrations (HFVs) from, e.g., impact wrenches with a frequency content mainly above 1250 Hz have long been suspected to cause a significant number of vibration injuries, HAVS. These vibrations are unregulated in the current standard for risk estimation, ISO 5349-1; thereby, the risk of injury is suspected to be underestimated. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects on finger tissue subjected to HFVs similar to those from impact wrenches by using a 2D finite element model of a fingertip. The model was validated through experiments. Using the input acceleration from the experiments, the model predicted high pressure variation and particular negative pressures at levels close to 0.1 MPa (1 Bar) or more, which are levels where cavitation in liquid can occur, with a detrimental effect on biological systems.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vibration injuries cause significant costs for society, great personal suffering, and often the relocation of personnel within a company. The project “Zero Vibration Injuries” is a Swedish initiative with the objective of taking a holistic approach to the problem, involving all stakeholders. The project’s vision is “Zero Vibration Injuries”. This is achieved by addressing the source of the problem by reducing the vibration levels in hand-held machines and applying the solutions in industry to the benefit of the users.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The leading theme of the 2019 Summit of the International Society for the Study of Information, held 2–6 June 2019 at the University of California at Berkeley, was the question “Where is the I in AI, and the meaning of Information?” This question addresses one of the central issues not only for scientific research and philosophical reflection, but also for technological, economic and social practice. There is no doubt that the progress in designing computer based technological devices known as Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems has transformed the life and work of almost the entire human population. Moreover, this transformation continues and accelerates. At the same time, there is no one commonly accepted definition of AI. This is a reflection of the fact that there is no commonly accepted definition of intelligence in general. Moreover, there is no agreement about human intelligence, and psychologists and cognitive scientists frequently opt for multiple intelligences because, in essence, intelligence is a contextual trait. Thus, an important goal of researchers is to more definitely qualify the natural intelligence of people and maybe other living beings, making it possible to understand whether artificial intelligence, i.e., the intelligence of a machine, is the same, and how it is possible to estimate this intelligence.
