  • A framework for modelling cash flow lags
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: SN Business & Economics. - : Springer Nature. - 2662-9399. ; 1:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional models of irreversible investment problems assume that the investment starts generating cash flows immediately, i.e., at the same time as the investment is undertaken. Real-world investment situations are characterized by time-to-build or investment lags, which means that there is a time difference between when the investment is made and when the investment starts generating cash flows. We combine two existing models of investment lags to obtain a flexible, yet simple, way of modelling and analyzing the effects of investment lags. Both traditional models, and models that incorporate the effects of time-to-build, typically assume that the expected future cash flows generated by an investment are represented by a single cash flow that reflects the size of the market value of an investment. To reflect real-world cases where investments generate cash flows in several time periods, we present a framework in which cash flows are explicitly allowed to be spread out in time. Our model can be used to incorporate cases where an investment is partially sold in different time periods. Using an irreversible optimal investment timing problem case study, we show how our framework makes it possible to easily compare the effect of different cash flow timings. In this case, the value and the timing of the investment depend on a constant that in a natural way can be decomposed into three parts, thereby showing the influence of the value and timing from the respective parts of the framework.

  • Self-employment, corruption, and property rights : a comparative analysis of European and CEE economies
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SN Business & Economics. - : Springer. - 2662-9399. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyzes the relationship between self-employment, corruption, and property rights in 30 European countries, including 11 Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) economies, across the two decades of 1996–2016. In general, relatively little research has focused on the relationship between entrepreneurship and the protection of property rights. Furthermore, past findings show that corruption may have both negative and positive effects on the level of entrepreneurial activity, either “greasing” or “sanding” the wheels for entrepreneurship. Overall, research on how the informal institution corruption and the formal institution property rights are linked to entrepreneurship in post-socialist/transition economies has been limited. We find that stronger protection of property rights increases self-employment ratios, both in Europe in general and in CEE economies. The relationship between self-employment and the control of corruption is not significant. We conclude that neither higher nor lower levels of corruption control affect the share of self-employment. In comparative perspective, the ratio of self-employment in the group of CEE economies does not respond differently to these two key institutions.

  • Elaborating on the links between declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, and employee performance
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SN Business & Economics. - : Springer. - 2662-9399. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to elucidate the links between declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, and performance in the context of ISO 9001:2015 certification. It develops a model which tests the impact of training and rewarding on employees’ declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, and motivation. It tests the effects of declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, and motivation on employees’ contextual and task performance. The study is conducted in Turkey using data collected from 423 employees working in various firms operating in the textiles, food production, and mining sectors. Our results show that although training and rewarding are important antecedents of knowledge and motivation, ISO 9001:2015 certified firms had difficulties in converting these benefits into better employee performance.

  • Beyond the stereotype of an intrapreneur: an exploratory study of different intrapreneurs and various corporate conditions
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SN Business & Economics. - : Springer. - 2662-9399. ; 3:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The corporate entrepreneurship literature has identifed the importance of intrapre‑neurs for maintaining growth, revitalization, and performance of corporations, butlittle is known about intrapreneurs and how they perceive their corporate workingconditions. The working conditions in the corporation have an efect on employees’behavior. This paper empirically investigates corporate conditions from the individ‑ual’s perspective as well as the types of intrapreneurs that exist. The fndings from acluster analysis of intrapreneurs suggests that there are three types of intrapreneurs:resilient intrapreneurs, neglected intrapreneurs, and privileged intrapreneurs. Over‑all, the fndings show that intrapreneurial behavior and corporate conditions arerelated and that organizations purposefully can design their corporate environmentto support diferent intrapreneurs.

  • Online casinos : advertising and avoidance among Generation Y consumers in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SN Business & Economics. - : Springer. - 2662-9399. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Online casinos are one of Sweden’s largest gambling sectors. Increased advertising investment and advertising frequency have sought to attract Generation Y consumers to these casinos, yet it has been suggested that advertising can contribute to avoidance behaviours towards products and services, including online casinos and specific gambling brands. The various advertising aspects used in gambling advertising and their impact on behaviour have not been widely researched. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the use of creative strategies in casino advertising and how it contributes to the avoidance of online casinos, specifically among Swedish Generation Y consumers. As an exploratory study, qualitative methods were used. Initially, 13 casino advertisements were analysed to identify the strategies used in the advertisements. These were then presented to Generation Y consumers in three focus groups and six in-depth interviews. The analysis of the advertising shows the use of people and characters in presenting the casino brand. Male voice-overs were utilised in addition to music and other casino-related sounds. The advertising also used bright colours to attract attention. The impact of these advertisements is that the content, the auditory cues rather than just music, the emotional response, and the frequency of the advertising were found to contribute to the avoidance of casino brands. Furthermore, the ethics and general attitudes to the industry impact the decision to avoid these brands. The managerial implication of this research shows the impact of advertisements on the decision to avoid a brand, specifically a casino brand.

  • Does official development assistance affect a donor’s exports? South Korea’s case
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: SN Business & Economics. - : Springer. - 2662-9399. ; 1:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the impact of official development assistance (ODA) provided by South Korea for its exports to recipient countries. The empirical analysis is based on data from 1996 to 2014 and covers 121 recipient countries. The paper uses a 3SLS estimation method that accounts for a two-way causal relationship between ODA and exports while the endogeneity and sample selection bias are accounted for. Using the gravity model, we confirm the positive effects of ODA when fixed unobserved effects are controlled. The model is further generalized by disaggregating ODA into its underlying types of aid. Our results show that technical cooperation and loans have positive and significant effects, but grants have a negative impact on South Korea’s exports to recipient countries. In addition, we also examine South Korea’s ODA allocations. Our findings suggest that there is a two-stage decision-making process in the provision of aid. In the first stage, the aid’s humanitarian purpose plays a key role in responding to countries’ needs even when there is lower bilateral trade with these countries. In the second stage, decisions regarding the size of ODA are considered and these present a mixed purpose for giving ODA to higher importer countries.

  • Farmers’ strategic responses to competitive intensity and the impact on perceived performance
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: SN Business & Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2662-9399. ; 1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A large percentage of small- and medium-sized farms have ceased operations in the last 2 decades in part due to their inability to respond to increased competitive intensity. Consequently, the strategic responses farmers adopt to competitive intensity are important to understand as they may influence performance and ultimately their survival. Based on a sample of 388 randomly selected farmers in Sweden and using structural equation modelling, we find that as perceptions of competitive intensity increase, so does their market orientation (MO) and lean production orientation (LPO), but not entrepreneurial orientation (EO). Moreover, we find that farmers who indicate greater (in order of importance) MO and LPO report better overall performance, while increased EO surprisingly contributes negatively to performance. Our findings contribute to the limited body of research on strategic responses to competitive intensity in the agricultural sector and subsequent payoff on farm performance.

  • The disappointment of financial support measures during the COVID-19 pandemic among small business managers’ in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SN Business & Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2662-9399. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic is viewed as an emergent social phenomenon with several negative effects, e.g., financial decline of small businesses, as well as worsened sense of well-being. The aim of this article is to explore small business managers’ perceptions of governmental financial support measures and relate them to how they experienced their own health and consequences on their work environment. This mixed-method study was performed during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden. A survey was conducted during the period from October 2020 to February 2021 and answered by 729 small business managers, followed by ten interviews in March 2021. The key result shows that the managers were dissatisfied with the governmental financial support measures implemented. The results show that the attitudes of the small business managers towards the financial support measures may have had a negative impact on their subjective health. The study indicates a mismatch between the needs of small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic and how society provides resources through support systems. This in turn may have meant a limitation on the government’s ability to assist small business owners with financial support during the pandemic.
