  • Development and preliminary evaluation of an Android based heart rate variability biofeedback system
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2014 36th Annual International Conference of the IEEE. - : IEEE. - 9781424479290 ; 2014, s. 3382-5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reduced Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is believed to be associated with several diseases such as congestive heart failure, diabetes and chronic kidney diseases (CKD). In these cases, HRV biofeedback may be a potential intervention method to increase HRV which in turn is beneficial to these patients. In this work, a real-time Android biofeedback application based on a Bluetooth enabled ECG and thoracic electrical bioimpedance (respiration) measurement device has been developed. The system performance and usability have been evaluated in a brief study with eight healthy volunteers. The result demonstrates real-time performance of system and positive effects of biofeedback training session by increased HRV and reduced heart rate. Further development of the application and training protocol is ongoing to investigate duration of training session to find an optimum length and interval of biofeedback sessions to use in potential interventions.

  • Generating Hyperspectral Skin Cancer Imagery using Generative Adversarial Neural Network.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Annual International Conference. - 2694-0604. ; 2020, s. 1600-1603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we develop a proof of concept of using generative adversarial neural networks in hyperspectral skin cancer imagery production. Generative adversarial neural network is a neural network, where two neural networks compete. The generator tries to produce data that is similar to the measured data, and the discriminator tries to correctly classify the data as fake or real. This is a reinforcement learning model, where both models get reinforcement based on their performance. In the training of the discriminator we use data measured from skin cancer patients. The aim for the study is to develop a generator for augmenting hyperspectral skin cancer imagery.

  • Cole Function and Conductance-Based Parasitic Capacitance Compensation for Cerebral Electrical Bioimpedance Measurements
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2012 Annual International Conference of the IEEE. - San Diego : IEEE press. ; 2012, s. 3368-71
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most common measurement artifacts present in Electrical Bioimpedance Spectroscopy measurements (EBIS) comes from the capacitive leakage effect resulting from parasitic stray capacitances. This artifact produces a deviation in the measured impedance spectrum that is most noticeable at higher frequencies. The artifact taints the spectroscopy measurement increasing the difficulty of producing reliable EBIS measurements at high frequencies. In this work, an approach for removing such capacitive influence from the spectral measurement is presented making use of a novel method to estimate the value of the parasitic capacitance equivalent that causes the measurement artifact. The proposed method has been tested and validated theoretically and experimentally and it gives a more accurate estimation of the value of the parasitic capacitance than the previous methods. Once a reliable value of parasitic capacitance has been estimated the capacitive influence can be easily compensated in the EBIS measured data. Thus enabling analysis of EBIS data at higher frequencies, i.e. in the range of 300-500 kHz like measurements intended for cerebral monitoring, where the characteristic frequency is remarkably higher than EBIS measurements i.e. within the range 30 to 50 kHz, intended for body composition assessment.

  • Electrical Bioimpedance cerebral monitoring. Preliminary results from measurements on stroke patients
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2012 Annual International Conference of the IEEE. - : IEEE. - 9781424441198 ; 2012, s. 126-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (EBIS) is currently used in different tissue characterization applications. In this work we aim to use EBIS to study changes in electrical properties of the cerebral tissues after an incident of hemorrhage/ischemic stroke. To do so a case-control study was conducted using six controls and three stroke cases. The preliminary results of this study show that by using Cole-based analysis on EBIS measurements and analyzing the Cole parameters R0 and R∞, it is possible to detect changes on electrical properties of cerebral tissue after stroke.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The major reason for preventable hospital death isvenous thromboembolism (VTE). Non-pharmacologicaltreatment options include electrical stimulation or compressiontherapy to improve blood flow in the extremities. Textileelectrodes offer potential to replace bulky devices commonlyused in this field, thereby improving the user compliance. In thiswork, the performance of dry and wet knitted electrodes incombination with pressure application to the electrode wasevaluated in neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). Amotor point stimulation on the calf was performed on ninehealthy subjects to induce a plantarflexion and the requiredstimulation intensity as well as the perceived pain were assessed. The performance of the different electrode constructions wascompared and the influence of the pressure application wasanalysed. The results show that wet textile electrodes (0.9 %saline solution) perform significantly better than dry electrodes. However, opportunities were found for improving theperformance of dry textile electrodes by using an uneven surfacetopography in combination with an intermediate to highpressure application to the electrode (> 20 mmHg), e.g. by usinga compression stocking. Moreover, the smaller of the two testedelectrode areas (16 cm2; 32 cm2) appears to be favourable interms of stimulation comfort and efficiency.

  • Portable bioimpedance monitor evaluation for continuous impedance measurements : Towards wearable plethysmography applications
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, EMBS. - 9781457702167 ; 2013, s. 559-62
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Personalised Health Systems (PHS) that could benefit the life quality of the patients as well as decreasing the health care costs for society among other factors are arisen. The purpose of this paper is to study the capabilities of the System-on-Chip Impedance Network Analyser AD5933 performing high speed single frequency continuous bioimpedance measurements. From a theoretical analysis, the minimum continuous impedance estimation time was determined, and the AD5933 with a custom 4-Electrode Analog Front-End (AFE) was used to experimentally determine the maximum continuous impedance estimation frequency as well as the system impedance estimation error when measuring a 2R1C electrical circuit model. Transthoracic Electrical Bioimpedance (TEB) measurements in a healthy subject were obtained using 3M gel electrodes in a tetrapolar lateral spot electrode configuration. The obtained TEB raw signal was filtered in MATLAB to obtain the respiration and cardiogenic signals, and from the cardiogenic signal the impedance derivative signal (dZ/dt) was also calculated. The results have shown that the maximum continuous impedance estimation rate was approximately 550 measurements per second with a magnitude estimation error below 1% on 2R1C-parallel bridge measurements. The displayed respiration and cardiac signals exhibited good performance, and they could be used to obtain valuable information in some plethysmography monitoring applications. The obtained results suggest that the AD5933-based monitor could be used for the implementation of a portable and wearable Bioimpedance plethysmograph that could be used in applications such as Impedance Cardiography. These results combined with the research done in functional garments and textile electrodes might enable the implementation of PHS applications in a relatively short time from now.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Annual International Conference. - 2694-0604. ; 2021, s. 1416-1418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rubber hand illusion is known to invoke a sense of ownership of a rubber hand when a person watches the stroking of the rubber hand in synchrony with their own hidden hand. Quantification of the sense of ownership is traditionally performed with the rubber hand illusion questionnaire, but the search for reliable physiological measurements persists. Skin temperature has been previously suggested and debated as a biomarker for ownership. We investigated hand temperature as a measure of rubber hand illusory strength via thermal imaging of the hand during the rubber hand experiment. No relationship was found between reported illusory strength and skin temperature.Clinical Relevance- Our results indicate that skin temperature is not a suitable biomarker for rubber hand illusory strength.

  • Skin-Electrode Contact Area in Electrical Bioimpedance Spectroscopy. Influence in Total Body Composition Assessment.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, EMBS. - : IEEE. - 9781424441228 ; 2011, s. 1867-70
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (EBIS) has been widely use for assessment of total body composition and fluid distribution. (EBIS) measurements are commonly performed with electrolytic electrodes placed on the wrist and the ankle with a rather small skin–electrode contact area. The use of textile garments for EBI requires the integration of textrodes with a larger contact area surrounding the limbs in order to compensate the absence of electrolytic medium commonly present in traditional Ag/AgCl gel electrodes. Recently it has been shown that mismatch between the measurements electrodes might cause alterations on the EBIS measurements. When performing EBIS measurements with textrodes certain differences have been observed, especially at high frequencies, respect the same EBIS measurements using Ag/AgCl electrodes. In this work the influence of increasing the skinelectrode area on the estimation of body composition parameters has been study performing experimental EBIS measurement. The results indicate that an increment on the area of the skin-electrode interface did produce noticeable changes in the bioimpedance spectra as well as in the body composition parameters. This influence must be taken into consideration when designing and testing textile-enable EBIS measurement systems.

  • Can Deep Synthesis of EMG Overcome the Geometric Growth of Training Data Required to Recognize Multiarticulate Motions?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Annual International Conference. - 2694-0604. ; 2021, s. 6380-6383
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By being predicated on supervised machine learning, pattern recognition approaches to myoelectric prosthesis control require electromyography (EMG) training data collected concurrently with every detectable motion. Within this framework, calibration protocols for simultaneous control of multifunctional prosthetic hands rapidly become prohibitively long-the number of unique motions grows geometrically with the number of controllable degrees of freedom (DoFs). This paper proposes a technique intended to circumvent this combinatorial explosion. Using EMG windows from 1-DoF motions as input and EMG windows from 2-DoF motions as targets, we train generative deep learning models to synthesize EMG windows appertaining to multi-DoF motions. Once trained, such models can be used to complete datasets consisting of only 1-DoF motions, enabling simple calibration protocols with durations that scale linearly with the number of DoFs. We evaluated synthetic EMG produced in this way via a classification task using a database of forearm surface EMG collected during 1-DoF and 2-DoF motions. Multi-output classifiers were trained on either (I) real data from 1-DoF and 2-DoF motions, (II) real data from only 1-DoF motions, or (III) real data from 1-DoF motions appended with synthetic EMG from 2-DoF motions. When tested on data containing all possible motions, classifiers trained on synthetic-appended data (III) significantly outperformed classifiers trained on 1-DoF real data (II), although significantly underperformed classifiers trained on both 1- and 2-DoF real data (I) (I < 0.05). These findings suggest that it is feasible to model EMG concurrent with multiarticulate motions as nonlinear combinations of EMG from constituent 1-DoF motions, and that such modelling can be harnessed to synthesize realistic training data.

  • 2022

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Handwriting is an important component of academic curricula and grapho-motor skills (GMS) support learning, reading, memory and self-confidence. Teachers and clinicians report increase in children experiencing problems with acquiring fluid and legible handwriting. To date gold-standard tests evaluating children's GMS, mostly rely on pen and paper tests, requiring extensive coding time and subject to high inter-rater variability. This work presents preliminary data on a new digital platform for Grapho-motor Handwriting Evaluation & Exercise (GHEE), attempting to overcome limitations of available digitalized methods for GMS evalution. In fact, contrary to previous systems, GHEE design originated from comparisons among multiple standardized tests and was based on a human-machine interaction approach. GHEE hardware and software is presented as well as data on preliminary testing. Cursive handwriting data from six adult volunteers was analyzed according to six parameters of relevance, both automatically (i.e., using GHEE software) and manually (i.e., by a human coder). Comparisons among machine and human data sets allowed parsing out parameters to be extracted automatically and parameters requiring human-machine interaction. Results confirmed platform efficacy and feasibility of the proposed approach.

  • Ingår i: Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2012 Annual International Conference of the IEEE. - : IEEE. - 9781424441198 ; 2012, s. 562-5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a novel frequency distribution scheme intended to provide more accurate estimations of Cole parameters. Nowadays a logarithmic frequency distribution is mostly used in Electrical Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (EBIS) applications. However it is not optimized following any criterion. Our hypothesis is that an EBIS signal contains more information where the variation of the measurement regarding the frequency is larger; and that there ought to be more measuring frequencies where there is more information. Results show that for EBIS data with characteristic frequencies up to 200 kHz the error obtained with both frequency distribution schemes is similar. However, for EBIS data with higher values of characteristic frequency the error produced when estimating the values from EBIS measurements using an adaptive frequency distribution is smaller. Thus it may useful for EBIS applications with high values of characteristic frequency, e.g. cerebral bioimpedance.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical bioimpedance has been used for several decades to assess body fluid distribution and body composition by using single frequency and bioimpedance spectroscopic (BIS) techniques. It remains uncertain whether BIS methods have better performance compare to single frequency regression equations. In this work the performance of two BIS methods and four different 50 kHz single frequency prediction equations was studied in a data set of wrist-to-ankle tetrapolar BIS measurements (5-1000 kHz) together with reference values of total body water obtained by tritium dilution in 92 patients. Data were compared using regression techniques and Bland-Altman plots. The results of this study showed that all methods produced similarly high correlation and concordance coefficients, indicating good accuracy as a method. Limits of agreement analysis indicated that the population level performance of Sun's prediction equations was very similar to the performance of both BIS methods. However, BIS methods in practice have slightly better predictive performance than the single-frequency equations as judged by higher correlation and the limits of agreement from the Bland-Altman analysis. In any case, the authors believe that an accurate evaluation of performance of the methods cannot be done as long as the evaluation is done using Bland-Altman analysis, the commonly accepted technique for this kind of performance comparisons.

  • Individualized closed-loop anesthesia through patient model partitioning
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 42nd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC'20). - 2694-0604. ; , s. 361-364
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Closed-loop controlled drug dosing has the potential of revolutionizing clinical anesthesia. However, interpatient variability in drug sensitivity poses a central challenge to the synthesis of safe controllers. Identifying a full individual pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic (PKPD) model for this synthesis is clinically infeasible due to limited excitation of PKPD dynamics and presence of unmodeled disturbances. This work presents a novel method to mitigate inter-patient variability. It is based on: 1) partitioning an a priori known model set into subsets; 2) synthesizing an optimal robust controller for each subset; 3) classifying patients into one of the subsets online based on demographic or induction phase data; 4) applying the associated closed-loop controller. The method is investigated in a simulation study, utilizing a set of 47 clinically obtained patient models. Results are presented and discussed.Clinical relevance—The proposed method is easy to implement in clinical practice, and has potential to reduce the impact from surgical stimulation disturbances, and to result in safer closed-loop anesthesia with less risk of under- and over dosing.
