- The objective of this paper is to discuss how Knowledge Enabled Engineering, when combined with simulation methods is a development step for product development processes, engineering design methods and evaluation support systems. The paper opens the discussion on how these approaches, i.e. work methods, simulation support and Knowledge Enabled Engineering (KEE) methods affects best practice in engineering design (ED) by adding synthesis support to the already existing analysis support. In the presented work the authors discuss the actual state of industrial applications, with challenges and opportunities, at Volvo Car Corporation, automotive manufacturer, and Volvo Aero Corporation, jet engine component manufacturer, both operating in Sweden.

- Many of the challenges in organising and developing an international engineering conference under severe time and cost constraints are similar to those involved developing a complex technical artefact. The large number of authors and reviewers who are active in the process and the just-in-time character of their deliveries further complicate the task. This paper describes and analyses the experience of developing a recent international conference on engineering design from a product development perspective. Key factors for developing a successful conference are analysed. The main purpose is to provide future conference organisers with recommendations to help promote successful and rewarding conferences.

- An increasing number of studies have been focusing on the cognitive abilities and limitations of the designer during the design process, yet thus far only for the conceptual design phase. This paper deals with the embodiment design and detail design phases. We focus on the problem-solving process - strategies and basic steps - around the synthesis activity. Six experiments have been carried out, applying the verbal protocol analysis method as adapted to embodiment design and detail design. The results of this study show the specificities of the problem-solving activities of the later phases of the design process.

- A clear trend in recent years is increased legal and customer demands for lower noise levels for construction machinery.Even if the gear whine type of noise is not the loudest source, its pure tone is easily distinguished from other noise sources and it is perceived as highly unpleasant and gives an impression of poor quality. A general design requirement is to the gear whine related noise at least 15 dB lower than other noise sources. The origin of this noise is the gear mesh, where vibrations are excited, mainly due to the transmission error. This paper presents ongoing model-based research at Volvo CE that is focused on investigating the influence of design parameters, gear-finishing methods, and assembly operations on gear whine noise.
