  • The role of context in managing information infrastructure services
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ICIS 2010 Proceedings. - : AIS Electronic Library (AISeL). - 9780615418988
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Contemporary organizations are increasingly dependent on information infrastructures to deliver their services. However, information infrastructures are highly complex and dynamic, which lead to considerable management challenges. This research aims to contribute to our understanding of these challenges through an in-depth investigation of a team responsible for information infrastructure services at a large business and technology service company. The complexity and dynamics faced by the team emphasizes the important role of context in managing its information infrastructure services and underlying technology platform. To investigate the team’s practice we therefore adopt contextualist inquiry in combination with a pluralist approach based on four complementary theoretical lenses; technological frames of references, risk management, control versus drift, and dynamic capabilities. As contributions, this research has the dual goal to improve the teams’ practices while at the same time providing new theoretical insights about the role of context in management of information infrastructure services.

  • Outsourcing creative work : A study of mobile application development
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Information Systems 2010 (ICIS 2010). - Red Hook : Curran Associates, Inc.. - 9780615418988
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the mobile phone industry converges with the IT/software industry, the emerging internetenabled multifunctional mobile devices are bringing together many diverse stakeholders. This paper examines the under-researched area of mobile application developers. We frame our study within the wider context of the mobile application industry in order to illustrate how the business models of large IT firms shape the everyday practices of systems developers, specifically those working on iPhone and Android platforms. By broadening out the study in this way we are able to situate seemingly new and distinctive technological artefacts and practices and show how they build on a number of continuing trends within the field. Drawing on qualitative data with developers working in this emerging market, we analyse their practices in order to (a) provide detail on this under-studied area and (b) show the ways in which developers adapt to the turbulent environment of the IT sector.

  • Engaged Design Science : Developing Design Visions for the future e-Newspaper
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ICIS 2010 Proceedings - Thirty First International Conference on Information Systems. - Atlanta : Association for Information Systems. - 9780615418988
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports the development of design visions for the future electronic (e-) newspaper. The ambition is to bring together the features of printed newspapers with the possibilities of online media. In an engaged design science research project we together with representatives of the newspaper industry and newspaper readers identified the three design challenges genre awareness, stress and lack of control, and obstruction. We also developed the guiding design metaphor of a calm e-reading experience and three design principles provision of media recognition support, support for user control, and support for focus on content. The design principles were evaluated through e-newspaper prototypes and on this basis we revised the design principles which led to a design theory for e-reading solutions on and for digital media.
